Archangel Gabriel April 8 traditions. Cathedral of the Archangel Gabriel (April 8)

The day after the Annunciation and July 26, according to the new style, the Orthodox Church glorifies the Archangel Gabriel. Archangel Gabriel was chosen by the Lord in order to proclaim the good news to the Virgin Mary, and with Her to all people, the great joy of the Incarnation of the Son of God. Therefore, the day after the Annunciation, having glorified the Most Pure Virgin, they thank the Lord and honor His messenger Archangel Gabriel.

The name Gabriel means "Fortress of God" or "God's Stronghold". On the icons, Archangel Gabriel is depicted with a branch of paradise that he brought to the Virgin Mary or with a luminous lantern in his right hand and a mirror in his left hand.

These days, we remember all the appearances of the Archangel Gabriel: he inspired Moses when writing the book of Genesis; He announced to the prophet Daniel about the fate of the Jewish people; appeared to righteous Anna with the news of the birth of the Virgin Mary from her; the priest Zechariah announced the birth of the Forerunner of the Lord; persistently remained with the Mother of God during Her earthly life; appeared to Saint Joseph the Betrothed.

In the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus Christ prayed, the Archangel appeared and strengthened Him before suffering. The myrrh-bearing women were the first to hear the joyful news of the Resurrection of Christ, also from Archangel Gabriel.

Archangel Gabriel is included in the host of the highest Angels - immortal disembodied spirits, servants of God, created by God before man. Holy Scripture does not particularly consider the lives of angels, reporting only about their appearances to people; The faith of Christ, which directs all the powers of the human mind and heart to God, also does not delve into the area of angelology. Angels were created by God as free beings. Some of the angels took advantage of this to fall away from God (fallen angels, demons). Others remained faithful to the Creator and remained Angels of Light.

The Church teaches that the angelic world consists of nine ranks (Rom. 8:38; Eph. 1:21, 3:10; Sol. 4:9), distinguished by their closeness to God and descending from God to the human race: Cherubim, Seraphim , Thrones, Principalities, Dominions, Powers, Powers, Archangels and Angels. Comprehension of the hierarchical structure of the angelic world is providentially hidden from people in the present age, but will be revealed in the future to the “sons of the resurrection,” who, according to the word of the Lord, will be “equal to the angels” (Luke 20:36).

By the power of their love for the Trinitarian God, the holy Angels join the life of the Holy Trinity, and by the power of love for the world and people - to the life of the world. They serve her, remaining invisible beings. Thus, between Heaven and earth, the Angels of God continually ascend and descend. The Church of Christ especially highlights and honors the two highest Angels - Archangel Michael and Archangel Gabriel, in view of their special participation in the destinies of humanity.

The ministry of Archangel Gabriel is providentially directed by God to the salvation of the human race, to the return of people who have fallen away from God to the Creator and Almighty. Both in Old Testament and New Testament times, Archangel Gabriel communicates to people saving knowledge from above and announces the main events in the spiritual history of mankind.

Archangel Gabriel taught the forefather Moses the scriptures in the desert, told him about the beginning of the world and the creation of the first man, and taught him all wisdom. Archangel Gabriel appeared to the Prophet Daniel and revealed the mysterious meaning of the prophecy of the seventy weeks, informing about the time of the liberation of the Jews from Babylonian captivity, as well as the time of the Incarnation (Dan. 8:16; 9:21). According to church tradition, it was Archangel Gabriel who announced to the righteous Joachim and Anna the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary from them, and to the priest Zechariah about the birth of the holy prophet John the Baptist (Luke 1:5-25).

Having been sent by God to Nazareth, Archangel Gabriel appeared to the Blessed Virgin, betrothed to righteous Joseph, and announced to Her the conception of the Son of God by overshadowing and the action of the Holy Spirit in her (Luke 1:30-35). It is believed that it was Archangel Gabriel who appeared in a dream to righteous Joseph to assure him of the sinlessness of the Virgin Mary (Matthew 1:20-21), and when the Lord Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem, Archangel Gabriel appeared to the shepherds and announced to them about the birth of the Savior (Luke 2:8-11).

It is also believed that it was Archangel Gabriel who strengthened the Lord in His prayer on the Mount of Olives (Luke 22:43) and informed the myrrh-bearing women about the Resurrection of Christ (Mark 16:5-7). Archangel Gabriel also appeared to the Mother of God when She was praying on the Mount of Olives and announced: “Your Son and our God is waiting for You with all the Archangels and Angels, Cherubim and Seraphim, with all the heavenly spirits and souls of the righteous, to take You, His Mother, to the Kingdom above, where you will live and reign with Him forever!” As a sign of the triumph of the Blessed One over bodily death, Archangel Gabriel handed Her a heavenly branch from a date tree.

In Orthodox iconography, Saint Archangel Gabriel is usually depicted in the image of the Angel of the Good News with an olive branch in his hands - a symbol of reconciliation between God and creation. This image is placed in the temple above the Royal Doors. The Holy Church, recalling the repeated appearances of the Archangel Gabriel in the history of the Old and New Testaments, offers fervent prayers to this vigilant intercessor, intercessor and benefactor of the human race.

The celebration of the Council of the Archangel Gabriel occurs 2 times a year - April 8 And 26 July.

Temple of Gabriel the Archangel, the Great Martyr Theodore Stratelates is in Arkhangelsky lane, 15a (metro station "Chistye Prudy").

Archangel Gabriel was chosen by God to preach the good news to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and with Her to all people the great joy of the Incarnation of the Savior Jesus Christ, the Son of God. That is why, on the day after the Feast of the Annunciation, April 8 according to the new style, Christians venerate the Archangel Gabriel, who served the Sacrament of our salvation.

If the number of Archangels begins with Michael, the champion and conqueror of the enemies of God, then Gabriel is in second place. The Lord sends him to proclaim and clarify the Divine Mysteries.

Archangel Gabriel is one of the seven main angels who, according to the book of Tobit, “offer the prayers of the saints and enter before the glory of the Holy One” (Tob. 12:15). The name Gabriel means "power of God" in Hebrew.

Archangel Gabriel is mentioned several times in Scripture as a heavenly messenger whom God sends to announce to people His plans for the salvation of the human race.

He taught Moses, who escaped the hand of Pharaoh, the book of books in the desert, told him about the beginning of the world and the creation of the first man Adam, told him about the life and deeds of the former patriarchs, told him about the flood and the division of languages, explained to him the location of the celestial planets and elements, taught him arithmetic, geometry and all wisdom.

In the Orthodox Church on April 8, following the Holiday Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary(April 7), following day Dedication of the Feast of the Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Cathedral of the Archangel Gabriel. This year, also on this day, April 9, the holiday is celebrated Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem("Palm Sunday").

Once I heard one grandmother say that today is the Annunciation, and tomorrow will be the Annunciation. This is how I learned about Archangel Gabriel Day.

This is what the Orthodox Church says about Him:

"Archangel Gabriel in Christianity; in Islam, as is known, Gabriel is the most revered angel, telling the prophets the will and revelations of Allah."

There is such an expression as “Grace of the Holy Spirit”, “Gift of the Holy Spirit”, “Gift of God”. Many sources say that God is known by the Holy Spirit.

On this occasion, several excerpts from the book of Archimandrite Sophrony Sakharov “Elder Silouan of Athos”:

“The Russian word Grace expresses a partly theological idea about it, an understanding of its nature, namely: the good gift of God, or the gift of God’s grace; the uncreated supramundane power (energy) of the Divine.

The love of Christ, as Divine power, as the gift of the Holy Spirit, the One, acting in all, ontologically binds together; love assimilates the life of the beloved. He who loves God is included in the life of the Divine; he who loves his brother includes the life of his brother in his hypostatic being; He who loves the whole world embraces the whole world in spirit.

In the appearance of the Lord, he was given that degree of knowledge that excludes doubts and hesitations. He categorically asserted that whoever loves God with the Holy Spirit will certainly love all of God’s creation, and above all man. He knew this love as a gift of the Holy Spirit; he perceived it as an action of God descending from above; and on the contrary, he experienced complete immersion in God, which came through the power of gracious love for his neighbor."

“You are merciful and give them the grace of the Holy Spirit.” God gives the gift of the Holy Spirit, and then a person becomes free. “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom” ( 2 Cor. 3:17).

I recently read that the grace of the Holy Spirit is the deepest feelings:

“But if we talk about the result, by and large, they all achieved the same thing - deep feelings, contact with the world of the Creator. What is called grace in Christianity. They say the same thing. Basically, deep feelings, contact with God, through the Soul through the Holy Spirit.”

All this reveals the immense help we receive. Many thanks for the Gift that every seeker can receive, for the help in finding it. There are not enough words and they seem clumsy and rough to express what is inside. We need

Brothers and sisters, traditionally, the day after the great holiday, the Holy Church remembers the heroes of Sacred History who directly participated in the events of the holiday and played an important role in it. Today this is Archangel Gabriel - a disembodied spirit who conveyed from God to the Virgin Mary the joyful news of the glorious conception from the Holy Spirit and the future birth from Her into the world of Jesus Christ - the Son of God. The name “Gabriel” is translated from Hebrew as “The Most High is my strength.” In the Gospel of Luke, he himself testifies to himself when he speaks to the righteous Zechariah, the father of St. John the Baptist: I am Gabriel, standing before God, and sent to speak with you and bring this good news to you(Luke 1:19). Saint Demetrius of Rostov calls Archangel Gabriel “the servant of the divine fortress and the exponent of the hidden mysteries of God.”

We are accustomed to talking about the hierarchy of angels, but St. John Chrysostom most correctly expressed the essence of this issue: “There are angels and archangels, thrones, dominions, principles and powers; but not only these hosts exist in heaven, but endless armies and innumerable tribes, which no word can depict.” And St. Basil the Great makes us understand one more important thing about angels: “All angels have both one name and, of course, a common nature to all: but some of them are appointed to rule over the nations, and others to be companions to each of the faithful. But to the extent that a whole people is preferable to one person, to the same extent, without a doubt, the dignity of the angel-ruler of the people is higher than the dignity of the angel who is entrusted with the care of one person.” Of course, we cannot even imagine the height of the dignity of the Archangel Gabriel, because according to Church Tradition he is the leader of the angels along with the Archangel Michael.

A guardian angel is assigned to each of us, the Holy Scripture and many holy fathers testify to this, such as: Saints Basil the Great, John Chrysostom, Ambrose of Milan, Theodore of Edessa, Philaret of Moscow and many, many others. Here is how the great Cappadocian saint Basil writes: “An angel is assigned to each of the faithful, worthy of seeing the Heavenly Father... That with each of the faithful there is an angel who, as a teacher and shepherd, controls his life, no one will argue against this, remembering the words of the Lord: Do not despise one of these little ones; for I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven(Matt. 18:10). And the psalmist says: The Angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him(Ps. 33:8). The angel will not depart from all those who believe in the Lord, unless we drive him away ourselves with bad deeds. Just as smoke drives away bees and stench drives away doves, so the guardian of our life, the angel, is driven away by regrettable and stinking sin... Since each of us has a holy angel who takes up arms around those who fear the Lord, sins can become the cause of disaster: the wall will no longer cover us, that is, holy powers that make people invincible while they remain with them.”

But in order to understand how majestic these creatures are - angels, I would like to cite one episode from the life of St. Nektarios of Aegina. One day, while walking with a novice in nature near the monastery, the saint asked her: “Do you want to see your Guardian Angel?” The novice, of course, expressed a great desire. “Here he is in front of you,” answered the saint. And then the girl fainted, unable to bear what she saw. And the saint later very much regretted what happened, saying that the girl was not ready yet. Now we can imagine what degree of holiness the Blessed Virgin Mary possessed, Who spoke not with a simple angel, but with the Archangel Gabriel himself.

Of course, those who bear the name of the holy archangel were granted special grace. And not only grace, but also responsibility. After all, in order to have as a patron someone who has countless angels under his command, each of whom shines like the sun, you need to be worthy of such a patron. Just don’t be afraid of your glorious angel, don’t think that he is harsh, because they are often depicted in military attire. Saint Demetrius of Rostov wrote well about the spiritual dispensation of the saints and angels: “Do the elect and the angels have faith and hope in heaven? The angels have neither faith nor hope, because from the time they were established in grace, they saw the One in whom they must believe and in whom they must hope. They always see the face of the Heavenly Father, and there is no longer room in them for either faith or hope, for faith and hope have the invisible as their object. God's elect in heaven also have no faith and hope, because they see Him in whom they believed and have Him in whom they trusted. Both the angels and the elect have only one immortal love.”

Dear friends, let's not forget about our first intercessors, given to us at baptism - the guardian angels, and we will remember them in our prayers along with the holy saints of God, in whose honor we are baptized.

Holy Archangel Gabriel and all our holy guardian angels, pray to God for us!

The Church calls Archangel Gabriel a harbinger of miracles, he is identified with the mysteries of God, and is considered a harbinger of happiness and salvation. As the main servant of the omnipotence of the Divine, he is revered in many religions. On March 26 (April 8, new style), a celebration is held, which everyone knows as the Cathedral of the Archangel Gabriel. During the celebration, the prayer of believers on the second day after the celebration of the Annunciation plays a huge role.
Believers gather within the walls of the temple to glorify Gabriel in prayers and songs, revealing the great mystery of the incarnation of the Son of God. Archangel Gabriel is revered as one of the seven spirits who bring the will of the saints. We also know about the holiday on July 13 (26), which has been celebrated since the end of the ninth century. This day calls on everyone to remember all the miracles of the appearance of the Archangel Gabriel. In addition, in November, on the 8th (21st), the Council of the Archangel Michael and the Heavenly Powers is celebrated. On this day, Gabriel is glorified along with the Council of the Heavenly Forces.
If believers do not have the opportunity to go to service on April 8, then they need to start and end the day with prayer, turning to Gabriel.

Story

Saint Gabriel - who serves as God's messenger to certain people. He is one of the three archangels. Gabriel is mentioned in both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. First, in the Old Testament, Gabriel appears before the prophet Daniel to explain his visions. Gabriel skilfully interprets Daniel's visions. After Gabriel's first visit, Daniel was ill for several days. Gabriel visited him, giving him more understanding of the faith, teaching him prayers.
In the New Testament, Gabriel, described as the “angel of the Lord,” first comes to the father of John the Baptist. He tells him: “Do not be afraid: you will hear the prayer, and your wife will give you a son, and you will give him the name John. And you will rejoice, and many will rejoice at his birth. ".
After some time, John's wife finds out that she is carrying a child under her heart, Gabriel appears again. The Book of Luke says that he was sent by the Lord to Nazareth to visit a virgin married to a man named Joseph. Angle said, turning to Mary: “Rejoice, you are loved, God is with you: you are blessed among women.” Luke 1:28.
"Do not be afraid, Mary, you find grace with God." Agnel appeared to Mary with a concrete tree. First of all, he let her know that she would become pregnant by the Holy Spirit, and the child would become none other than the Son of the Lord. After the Annunciation, Gabriel no longer spoke to Mary.
Attributes of the image of Gabriel on icons in other types of works of art. He is dressed in a simple blue and white outfit; and he is seen to be carrying in his hands a lily, a branch from Paradise, a scroll or scepter, and a trumpet. In art, Gabriel is often depicted in scenes of the Annunciation, since this saint is very closely associated with this holiday.
He is sometimes called the one who indicates the return of the Lord to Earth. However, the person to whom the job is assigned; in different passages of Holy Scripture he appears in different images, with a different name. Gabriel is recognized as the patron saint of messengers.
As a messenger angel acting as God's messenger, he helps writers, teachers, journalists and artists convey their message, find motivation and confidence, and develop their skills. It also helps overcome problems of fear in communication. For people of faith, it is of great importance in all areas related to children, helping during conception, pregnancy, childbirth and raising children.

Believers about the signs from Gabriel

Archangel Gabriel is known as the angel of revelation. It plays a significant role in Christianity, Islam, Judaism and many other religions, serving as a messenger from God. In the Bible, Gabriel can be found in the books of Luke and Daniel. He is also called the "Christmas Angel" because he announced the upcoming birth of Jesus to Mary and the shepherds. Gabriel is believed to be associated with the white or copper light and that he often delivers his messages to people in their dreams.
When people receive unexpected messages that give them valuable guidance about the future, it can be assumed that it is Gabriel who is delivering a message from God. As the angel of water, one of Gabriel's tasks is to clarify things.
Gabriel, as the archangel of communication, is often present with people who need him, he acts as a link to the healing of the soul. The clergy say that communication with Archangel Gabriel brings inspiration and reconciliation, that Gabriel helps with visions. He is able to help a person see glimpses of a wonderful future.
If a person feels at a dead end, finds himself in a seemingly insoluble conflict situation, one needs to call on Gabriel to help the believer change and begin to move on. The gift of making the right decisions in difficult situations is given to those who ask Gabriel for it, turning to the Archangel for help.
If a believer comes up with an idea about how to solve a difficult problem (especially after prayer), this may be a sign that Gabriel is sending help to the person. Church workers often say that Gabriel sometimes offers ideas for solving problems as long as people have righteous faith in God and seek help from his messenger. The most common form of communication with Gabriel is prayer. It is important to ask the Archangel to clarify anything you do not understand. By the end of the conversation, you should know exactly what to do.
Gabriel often visits people while they sleep. One has only to remember the Christian story, which says that Gabriel, the angel in the biblical story, tells Joseph in a dream that he will serve as the father of Jesus Christ on Earth.
Spiritual guides draw the attention of parishioners to the fact that Archangel Gabriel and other archangels can communicate with people through their dreams, which can help them solve problems. It is known that if you read a prayer-address to Gabriel before going to bed, you can get answers to your questions in a dream. In the morning, a person will wake up with the thought of a dream, which will lead him to the right path to solving problems. It happens that people do not remember a dream at all. However, the answer to the question asked by the man to Gabriel will come to consciousness later.
Gabriel often, by appearing in dreams, forces people to change, to turn to a more righteous life, to pious actions. Many people claim that Gabriel can appear in dreams in either male or female form. Sometimes a meeting with him may be unexpected, but people, one way or another, understand for what purpose the archangel comes to them.
The clergy emphasize that cleansing strengthens strength and opens channels of communication between humans and beings at higher levels. The wisdom of the guardian angel, archangels and spiritual guides becomes easier to understand, and it becomes easier for people to undergo cleansing of the heart and mind.
Many people say that they feel a burden of great responsibility after Gabriel appears in a dream. Historically, it was believed that Gabriel was asking people to do something for God. Religious texts note that the people visited by Gabriel experience anxiety as they contemplate his message to them.
For example, the Qur'an says that it was Gabriel who miraculously conveyed his message from God to the Prophet Muhammad, who later wrote that the Archangel's visits to him were intense and difficult to understand. In the book What You Need to Know About Islam and Muslims, the author writes: “Muhammad was under physical and psychological stress when he met the angel Gabriel, who conveyed to him the words of God.” “An angel appeared to him several times. The Prophet later reported that an angel sometimes comes in the form of an angel and sometimes in the form of a human being. Sometimes the prophet would hear a bell-like sound, and the revelation would come suddenly, requiring such extreme concentration from him that he was on the verge of losing consciousness.” Similar information is given in Orthodox writings.
Angel Gabriel appears unexpectedly. After greeting Mary, the angel begins a message from God by saying, “Do not be afraid.” An attitude of awe expressed as fear is characteristic of those who experience insight. Mary was alarmed when she heard the angel's greeting. She was confused by both the appearance of the Archangel and what he said.
Believers also say that Gabriel's energy matches the light of a white angel, and his aura has a coppery glow. Archangel Gabriel is associated with beautiful white light, and this color brings purification to where it is needed. Imagine this white light enveloping and surrounding you and your child as you ask it to help sweep away any worry or worry that may be affecting you both.
Gabriel is depicted with a large copper trumpet, symbolizing the delivery of messages from God. It is often depicted with a coppery-orange halo or white light around it. Some people also believe that a sudden and unusual attraction to objects made of copper is another sign that Archangel Gabriel is nearby.
