But when University of Florida professor Ken Wilson decided to take a closer look at the image and armed himself with a hand magnifier in addition to the Hubble optics, he discovered that the speck had a strange structure that could not be explained by any diffraction in the lens set.

Summarizing these data, astronomers from the American Northwestern University (Illinois) and the Canadian University of Guelph came to the conclusion that the solar system is in many ways a unique case and that very special conditions are needed for its formation.

“The solar system was born in special conditions to become the calm place that we see. The vast majority of other planetary systems did not meet these special conditions at the time of their emergence, and are very different, ”says lead author

For the first time, astronomers have created a computer model of the entire process of the formation of a planetary system from beginning to end - from the formation of a gas and dust disk, which remains after the formation of the central body, until the appearance of full-fledged planets.

Until the 1990s, the planets of the solar system were the only ones known, and astronomers had no reason to consider our system as something unusual, but after the discovery of exoplanets, the situation has changed. “Now we know that other planetary systems are nothing like the solar system,” says study lead author Prof.
astronomer Frederic Rasio of Northwestern University. “The shape of exoplanet orbits is elongated, not circular. The planets are not where we expect them to be. Many Jupiter-like giant planets, known as "hot Jupiters", get so close to the stars that they orbit them in a few days. Obviously, we need to refresh our understanding of the process of planet formation due to the huge variety of planets that we see now,” Racio adds.

Simulations have shown that the disk of gas from which the planets are formed relentlessly pushes them towards the central star, which can cause them to collide with each other. Among the growing planets there is fierce competition for gas, as a result of this chaotic process there is a wide variety of planetary masses. As the planets approach each other, they often fall into
gravitational resonance, which turns their orbits into elliptical ones. Some planets may be ejected from the planetary system into space as a result.

“Such a turbulent history leaves very little chance for a calm solar system like ours to form, and our models support this. Certain conditions must be exactly met in order for the solar system to appear, ”says the scientist.

Too massive gas disk, for example, leads to the appearance of "hot Jupiters" and bodies in elliptical orbits. Too light disk - to the formation of "ice giants" like Neptune, with a small amount of gas.

“Now we have a better understanding of the process of planet formation and can explain the properties of the strange exoplanets that we observe. We also know that our solar system is special, and we understand what makes it special,” Racio said.
