Imagine Dragons: interesting facts, best songs, history, listen. Imagine Dragons - composition, photos, clips, listen to songs

An incredibly popular American band that has conquered all kinds of musical charts, won the hearts of millions of fans - this is imagine Dragons. The composition of the group is not sugary boys, which were popular in the 90s, but ordinary guys who just love to write music and do it very high quality and with soul. They are called an indie rock band, because it is quite difficult to fit such diverse and unusual creativity into the framework of a particular genre. The history of the formation of the Imagine Dragons group, by the way, is also not banal.

From religion to music

Dan Reynolds, the band's future founder and mastermind, was born into a large Mormon family in 1987. He was the seventh son of nine children whose parents were very conservative. This left a strong imprint on the psyche of the young man, and he tried to throw out his experiences in his work. After graduating from high school, Dan was sent on a religious mission to Nebraska and also studied at Brigham Young University (Utah), in a town called Provo. It was there that religion took a backseat and not music first when Reynolds befriended Andrew Tolman. Young people in 2008 founded their own group, which soon became known as Imagine Dragons. The composition of the group changed at first, while the members were looking for themselves, their direction, performing covers, trying to compose original music. An interesting fact known to all fans of the team's creativity: the name is an anagram, but no one except the participants themselves knows how it stands for, although the fans have already gone through thousands of options. It is quite possible that there is also a true one, only the musicians have not confirmed any, and they are unlikely to do so.

Vegas boys

So, by the beginning of 2009, two very talented and ambitious guys began to assemble a musical group. Soon they were joined by Tolman's school friend, guitarist Wayne Sermon. He brought along his friend from Berkeley, bass player Ben McKee. This was the first composition of Imagine Dragons. Already in September, they released their first mini-album with the same name, and for the next two years they also released one EP (mini-album per year). But in addition to working hard to create their own music, the team fought hard for their own survival and took on any performances, once they even opened a mime concert.

Becoming famous in Utah, the guys moved to hometown Dana - Las Vegas where the main them concert venues there were casinos and strip clubs. There they performed mainly covers, including in the program and compositions own composition. Soon they started talking about the group, they began to be invited to various festivals. And a little later, one of their mini-albums fell into the hands of famous producer Alex De Kid (who worked with Eminem himself), who became interested in an unusual team, saw their potential and offered them cooperation.

Staff turnover

Over the years of its formation, the composition of the Imagine Dragons group has repeatedly changed. The names of Reynolds and Sermon remained unchanged, but in different time Andrew Beck also visited the band in 2008 (specialization - electric guitar and vocals) and Dave Lamk from 2008 to 2009 (specialized - bass guitar and vocals), and even as many as three girls Aurora Florence (2008, keyboards, violin, vocals), Brittany Tolman (2009-2011, keyboards, vocals) and Teresa Flamino (2011-20 12, keyboards).

By the way, one of the founders of the "Dragons" (as they are called by the fans), drummer Andrew Tolman, left the project in 2011 with his wife Brittany, and a little later they created their own band. By its heyday, the line-up of Imagine Dragons was Dan Reynolds, Wayne Sermon, Ben McKee, and drummer Dan Platzman, who replaced the departed Tolman. It remains unchanged to this day.

Climbing the musical Olympus

In 2012, the Dragons released two more mini-albums, which finally began to bear fruit financially. The group was very diligent and carefully preparing for the release of a full-fledged record. And in September of that year significant event happened. The album "Night Visions" was at the top of all charts in a record line, was in the top for a long time and became double platinum.

Imagine Dragons were named the brightest star of 2013, and the release of the album was named the highlight of the year. All sorts of awards rained down on them like from a cornucopia, including the prestigious Grammy music award itself. The track "Radioactive" became the biggest rock hit of the year according to the magazine It was real finest hour in the biography of Imagine Dragons.

Work, work and work again

Not resting on their laurels, the team toured very actively, winning more and more new hearts of fans, filming videos and preparing material for a new album. The almost three-year break between releases of records was very intense. And in September 2015, the second album in the Imagine Dragons biography appeared. "Smoke+Mirrors" did not go platinum like the "first-born", but received a well-deserved "gold" and its share of great hits and, of course, brought new awards to the team. And less than two years later, the musicians pleased the fans with the third disc called "Evolve", which was presented to the general public in May 2017. It hasn't even been four months yet main topic album, "Believer", has already won "Best Rock/Alternative Song" and won an award at the Teen Choice Awards.

Dragon Music

This unusual team can be safely considered the record holder for the number of times their songs have been used as soundtracks. For some Imagine Dragons projects, songs were specially recorded, in others they used the existing ones, but, one way or another, the list of the most popular films and TV shows where the music of Dragons sounds is incredibly impressive. One only "Radioactive" is worth something! It can be heard in the films The Guest, Continuum, The Warmth of Our Bodies, the series Arrow, The Vampire Diaries, The 100, True Blood, as well as the game Assassin's Creed 3 and so on. Before the release of their first full-length album, Imagine Dragons released several soundtracks for large-scale cinema projects in the form of singles. Among them were "Who We Are" from the film "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" and "Battle Cry" from the fourth "Transformers". Also, Dragon songs are used as soundtracks in the series Gossip Girl, Beauty and the Beast, Suits, Riverdale and many others, and among the films you can find in Insurgent, Iron Man 3, It's good to be quiet, Suicide Squad, Passengers and even in Kung Fu Panda 3, and this is not the whole list.

This article contains the most important information about Imagine Dragons: biography, composition, discography. But this is not all that fans would like to know about their favorite musicians, because the personal life, habits, favorite pastimes of idols interest fans no less. So, some interesting facts about the band members:

  • Reynolds is married with an older daughter, Arrow Eve, and two newborn babies, Coco and Gia, and with his wife, AJ Volkman, he has another musical project called Egyptian. This is their family hobby. The singer has been struggling with depression all his life, but it is in this state that he writes his hits. He claims that the family is his best cure for a long-standing illness.
  • Sermon is called "The Wing", his wife's name is Alexandra, and he is the happy father of two weather sons: River James and Wolfgang. The musician composes songs at night instead of sleeping (he has insomnia).
  • McKee is a hatmaker. Sewing is his hobby.
  • The group loves drums, is actively involved in charity work, likes to hang out on social networks and communicate with fans.

The music of the Imagine Dragons group carries some kind of supernatural positive charge that magnetically attracts music lovers with completely different tastes.

The main styles in which members of Imagine Dragons play are alternative and indie rock. But musicians are not limited to these genres. There is a lot of pop-rock and electronica in their work, and in some places even folk-rock and hip-hop “slip through”.

Unlike young rock bands that have been unable to move from garages to the stage for years, this unusual band almost immediately declared itself as a new star in the world of modern rock music.

Beginning of the Imagine Dragons story

Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds took his first steps in music as a piano player at the age of 6. Then, at the age of 13, he sneaked into his older brother's computer to turn on the sound recording function and sketch songs about his teenage experiences and disappointments.

But actually Imagine Dragons history began a little bit later - in 2008 when Reynolds meets drummer Andrew Tolman while attending Brigham Young University.

Finding similarities musical tastes and aspirations in life, the two students decide to form a band with the addition of guitarist Andrew Back, bassist Dave Lemke and keyboardist/violinist Aurora Florence.

Imagine Dragons line-up turnover

Over the next 9 years Imagine line-up Dragons changes repeatedly. So if you're not a fan who wants to know every last detail of the band's history, you can skip the next two paragraphs.

Not having played in the group for a year, Beck and Florence leave. Then in 2009, Tolman invited his high school friend Wayne Sermon to join the band as guitarist. A little later, Andrew brings his wife Brittany Tolman to the band, who takes a seat behind the keys and sings backing vocals. After that, Lemke leaves and Ben McKee takes the place of the bass player at the invitation of Sermon.

In 2011, the Tolmans left the group. McKee brought in Daniel Platzman on drums, and Teresa Flaminio replaced Brittany on the keyboard, only to leave after only six months. After her, the group did not have a permanent keyboard player, but Ryan Walker (2012–2015), William Wells (2015–2017) and Eliot Schwartzman (2017–…) are invited for concert tours.

To date, permanent Imagine Dragons line-up- vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Dan Reynolds (the only one who stayed in the group from its inception to the present day), guitarist Wayne Sermon, bassist Ben McKee and drummer Daniel Platzman.

Through thorns to the stars in an accelerated version

My musical career Imagine Dragons started off by winning the varsity Battle of the Bands and several other local competitions (in Utah).

The first song "Speak to me" by Imagine Dragons is recorded in the year of the group's creation (2008) with its original lineup.

Then Reynolds decides to move the group (already with an updated line-up) to Las Vegas - to his home. The team begins to perform regularly, however, at first mainly at night - in casinos and strip bars.

But after performing at festivals Vegas Music Summit (headlining in front of 26,000 people) and Bite of Las Vegas (Most Wanted Band 2010), everything changes: invitations to radio broadcasts; high-profile titles (“Best Indie Band 2010”, “Best Record 2011”, etc.) awarded by reputable music publications; a contract with a major record label (Interscope Records).

Before the signing of the contract, the group manages to record three mini-albums. Self-titled debut EP "Imagine Dragons" is released on September 1, 2009. next year, June 1, the second EP "Hell and Silence" is released. The third mini-album "It's Time" was released on March 12, 2011.

The fourth EP «Continued Silence» is released already on Interscope label (14.02.12). Track No. 1 "Radioactive" wins top positions in the music charts with lightning speed around the world, is nominated for a dozen awards (wins 4) and subsequently becomes the hallmark of the team. This track has been certified diamond in the US. according to the results of sales (more than 10 million copies).

All 4 mini-albums are rather warmly received by critics and listeners(especially "Continued Silence"). Reynolds later reports that with the help of these releases, the group "tested" the soil to release a really cool debut album.

What did they actually do? September 4, 2012 "Night Visions" is released, recorded under the direction of producer Alex Da Kid.

Longplay did not have time to come out, how immediately began to "skim the cream": 1st place - in Scottish Albums and three Billboard TOP charts ("Rock Albums", "Alternative Albums" and "Catalogue Albums"); 2nd - on the Billboard 200 and the British chart; other top places in the weekly charts of another 20 countries.

In just 2 weeks, 83,000 copies were sold, making the record the most successful debut album since 2006.

According to the results of sales, the album Imagine Dragons "Night Visions" took "gold" in 7 countries. And "platinum" at 14. Of these - 4 times 2x platinum (Austria, Mexico, Sweden, USA) and once 3x (Canada)!

Also among the achievements debut album Imagine Dragons won the "Top Rock Album" award at the 2014 Billboard Music Awards. And the song "Radioactive", which the LP inherited from its predecessor EP, was called "the biggest rock hit of the year" by Rolling Stone magazine.

Repeated, not so deafening, but still a success

Before releasing their second album, Imagine Dragons once again decided to follow the tried and tested path of "feeding the ground" - releasing mini-releases.

First came the EP "The Archive" (February 12, 2013). The group then wrote three soundtracks: "Monster" for the IOS game "Infinity Blade III"; "Battle Cry" - for the film "Transformers: Age of Extinction"; "Warriors" - for the film "Divergent, Chapter 2: Insurgent".

And finally after the release of three more singles("I Bet My Life", "Gold" and "Shots"), when the musicians realized that most of the new tracks "went" to listeners and critics, the release of the second album was announced.

The Imagine Dragons album "Smoke+Mirrors" was released on February 17, 2015. In support of it, a world tour of almost a year was held (04/12/15–02/05/16).

Also, a video concert "Smoke + Mirrors Life" was filmed for the release of the album. It was shown in cinemas around the world on March 2, 2016.

This time around, the reviews for the album were more mixed.- mostly positive, but there were also ratings marked "average". In particular, Metacritic rated "Smoke+Mirrors" 60/100.

As for the chart achievements of the second album, it basically repeated the successes of the debut record, raising the bar even higher in places: 1st place in Canada, Scotland, Britain and three US Billboard charts.

And here with sales this time things went a little more modestly- just a "gold" status in 7 countries. Although, you see, to call such results a failure, the language still somehow does not turn.

A fresh dose of indie rock from Imagine Dragons

Fans of the group can already prepare their ears: new album "Evolve"(title stylized as ƎVOLVE) coming out very soon- June 23.

The fact that the record will turn out to be of high quality can be judged by the already released singles.

In 2016, the Imagine Dragons songs "Sucker for pain" and "Levitate" were released. The latter continued the soundtrack "tradition" and sounded in the film "Passengers".

And this year, the group pleased with the compositions “Thunder”, “Whatever it takes”, “ Walking The Wire" and an undisputed hit "Believer", featuring Dolph Lundgren's music video. And if the rest of the songs are on the same level, just a great album awaits us.

In addition, Dan Reynolds claims that, compared to the previous two full-length albums, "Evolve" is an evolution of Imagine Dragons.

A tour is also planned in support of the third album, which starts on September 26. True, while the musicians plan to limit themselves to the cities of America.

For now, we just have to wait for the release (we will publish it on the same day) and hope that someday the Imagine Dragons group will drop by with a concert in our area.

Some interesting facts about Imagine Dragons

1. creative process in a group, it usually comes down to the imposition by each participant of his party on a previously created computer model. After mixing, according to the group's frontman Dan Reynolds, this kind of puzzle results in a composition in the form in which it already reaches the ears of the listeners.

Therefore, even the performers themselves do not know what the next song will be until they finish it.

2. The "old-timers" of the group have quite interesting features.

McKee has no taste spices and is fond of sewing hats.

Sermon suffers from insomnia and composes music at night.

Reynolds is Mormon He also suffers from depression and anxiety. In addition, he has a joint project with his wife Aja Volkman (Aja Volkman) project Egyptian.

3. Although the translation of the group name Imagine Dragons ("Imagine dragons" or "Imagine dragons") in itself is self-sufficient, in fact it's an anagram, the decoding of which is known only to the musicians themselves.

But that hasn't stopped fans from speculating. The most popular ones are "gained in orgasm", "twins are so big" ("a Gemini so grand"), "desiring a mango" and "aged men's radio".

4. The team in total was nominated 73 times for various music awards, thus obtaining 23 wins.

5. In addition to those already mentioned in the article, the Imagine Dragons group "marked" itself in other films and games. Their music in total is used as soundtracks in almost five dozen films and "toys".

Imagine Dragons - american group, the genre of which is difficult to define in one word. Thanks to the unique musical style, which reflects elements of rock and roll, indie rock, alternative movements and pop music, Dragons is so loved all over the world. IN this moment The band consists of 4 members: frontman Dan Reynolds, bassist Ben Mackie, guitarist Wayne Sermon and drummer Dan Platzman.

History of creation

The founder of the band, Dan Reynolds, was born into a large, religious and very conservative family, in which the open expression of one's emotions and feelings was not welcomed. An outlet for the creative boy was his passion for music, to which he devoted his whole life. At the age of six, he began to learn to play the piano, and at thirteen he sneaked up to the computer of his older brothers to write down sketches of his first songs.

In 2008, the young man met drummer Andrew Tolman, who also studied at Brigham Young University. The guys quickly converged on the basis of the same musical tastes and decided to organize their own group. Soon they were joined by guitarist and vocalist Andrew Beck, keyboardist and part-time violinist Aurora Florence and bassist Dave Lamke.

The team decided to call Imagine Dragons, which is an anagram, the meaning of which is known only to the first members of the group. Of course, fans have a lot of theories, including absolutely crazy options: "Aged Men's Radio" (radio for older men), "Desiring a Mango" (wishing a mango), "A Gemini So Grand" (such huge twins). The original phrase is still kept secret, the musicians only claim that so many interesting versions have been born during this time that the original one will surely seem boring to fans.

The main stages of creativity

In 2008, the guys enthusiastically started rehearsals, and after a few months they won the university music competition. In the same year, Imagine Dragons recorded their first single "Speak to me", the release of which became the first step on the path to success.

Suddenly, Beck and Florence left the group, and Andrew Tolman, Reynolds' old college friend, and his wife, Brittany, took their place. Later, the singer's friend Daniel "Wayne" Sermon joined them, and the band moved from Utah to Las Vegas, Dan's hometown, with a new line-up. There, the musicians rented a studio and started recording their debut album, while simultaneously playing in casinos and nightclubs.

Their first notable success was a performance at the Bite of Las Vegas festival, where they replaced the band Train, who dropped out due to illness of the frontman. The crowd of almost thirty thousand spectators who came to the concert warmly greeted no one famous group, A music critics erupted in a flood of flattering reviews of their performance.

Imagine Dragons have received several local awards, including Best Album of 2011 by Vegas 7 and Best Local Indie Band by Las Vegas Weekly. They began to be invited to television, and soon the musicians signed a contract with Interscope Records.

By that time, they had already released three successful mini-albums and had material ready for the fourth. Prior to this, the musicians did not dare to start recording a full-fledged record and tested the ground, but the success of the next EP “Continued Silence” finally convinced them of the correctness of the chosen direction.

The Radioactive single became the absolute leader in the world music charts, was nominated for fifteen awards (won four) and received diamond status in the United States based on sales results for 2012.

Imagine Dragons

All this time, the composition of the team has been constantly changing. Lemke was replaced by Ben McKee, and the Tolmans were replaced by Dan Platzman and Teresa Flamio. The latter only stayed for half a year, and after her departure, Imagine Dragons turned into a quartet, in which only Dan Reynolds, the ideological inspirer and founder of the group, remained from the old members.

Frequent rotations did not affect the quality of the musical material, and in September 2012 the full-length album Night Visions was released, produced by Alex Da Kid. Even before its release, two singles from this record hit the prestigious Billboard list, and the video for the song "It's Time" was nominated for an MTV award. In parallel, the musicians recorded soundtracks for the films The Hunger Games, Divergent and Transformers, as well as music for the FIFA 13 video game.

Imagine Dragons - It's Time

Unsurprisingly, the first 80,000 copies of the band's long-awaited album sold out within the first week, an incredible number for debutants. Night Visions was recognized as the best rock album in the United States and took top positions in all world charts. As a result of sales, the disc became gold in seven countries, platinum - in fourteen.

In support of the album, Imagine Dragons went on a grandiose world tour, which was a resounding success. Already at the very beginning of the tour, the musicians began to create material for the new collection, recording demo versions of new songs in between performances.

Interview with Imagine Dragons (Europe Plus)

The artists were inspired by the impressions received during their travels to different countries and continents, which could not but affect their work. By the end of the tour, they had about fifty different songs ready, from which they had to choose the foundation for the next album.

In the fall of 2014, fans were able to appreciate the single “I Bet My Life” from the new collection (Dane Dehaan starred in the video for the song), and at the end of the year, the release of the next album “Smoke + Mirrors” was widely announced on social networks. In February 2015, the disc went on official sale, and in the summer the group went on another large-scale tour, during which they visited Russia. When the interest of the fans reached its peak, the experimental album Evolve saw the light. The collection spent six months in the top ten of Billboard and was twice nominated for a Grammy. At the same time, many critics called it the weakest album of the summer of 2017 and scolded it for its complete lack of harmony and poverty of themes.

Imagine Dragons

Imagine Dragons is a popular indie rock band from America that has become a real sensation and has been surprising its listeners around the world for many years. Their music unites people with completely different tastes. All this is due to an unreal charge of positive energy, drive, a sense of the fullness of life in their texts and presentation. These guys have won recognition from the very beginning of their careers and have kept it to this day. The phenomenon of their popularity is due to the fact that they do what many miss: high-quality bright music in the rock genre, combined with a life-affirming meaning.

Brief history of the group

It all started in 2008 when future lead singer Dan Reynolds met Andrew Tolman, who played drums at the private Brigham Young Mormon University where they were both students. The young people decided to unite and invited other members to their team: Andrew Beck (guitar), Dave Lemke (bass) and Aurora Florence (keyboards). Soon the first victories came, in the university "Battle of the Bands" and similar competitions. Few people know that in the same year this line-up released a five-track mini-album called “Speak to Me”. And already at that stage of their career, the group had many fans in US state Utah, especially in the city of Provo, where the university of its founders is located. But in the same 2008, Beck and Florence left the team.

The year 2009 was marked by the arrival of a new guitarist, Wayne Sermon, concurrently an old friend of Tolman, who by that time had graduated College of Music. For execution vocal parts and playing the piano was invited by the drummer's wife Brittany Tolman. A little later, Lemke leaves the squad. Sermon's college friend Ben McKee, who played bass, will take his place.

The performers decide to move to the home of the soloist - Las Vegas. During this period, they released two records: "Imagine Dragons", "Hell and Silence". Then the group performs most often in entertainment venues such as casinos and striptease bars. However, there were more chances for success in the new place.

Widespread fame came by chance: the lead singer of the recognized rock band Train became seriously ill shortly before the largest festival Bite of Las Vegas 2009. Imagine Dragons performed instead of them in front of an audience of more than 26 thousand people! A year later, they will be invited to the same event as "The Most Demanded Group of 2010". Now Imagine Dragons can be heard on the radio, they receive the title of "Best Indie Band of 2010". The third album in a row called "It" s Time "released in 2011 brought the team the first contract with a major label, as well as the prize for" Best Record of 2011 ". The Tolman family leaves the team in the same year, to which Daniel Platzman and Teresa Flaminio (keyboards) will join them together. The latter did not stay in the composition for long and already in early 2012 left the team, making it the quartet that it remains to this day day.Since then it has been a male group.

The fourth album "Continued Silence" was released in collaboration with Interscope on Valentine's Day 2012. This one, like the previous three EPs (mini-albums), is well received by professional critics and general listeners. According to Reynolds, thanks to these releases, the musicians were able to understand how they can better develop in the future in order to make the most awesome album possible.

And they did it! 09/04/2012 a major debut album "Night Visions" was released, which immediately took all places of honor in charts in more than 20 countries. Within two weeks, 83,000 copies were sold. This is the most triumphant debut since 2006. The album became "gold" in seven states, and "platinum" in fourteen, including four of them "double platinum": in the United States, Mexico, Sweden, Austria. In Canada, the release became such three times! He received the title best rock album by the Billboard Music Award and was also nominated for International Album of the Year at the Juno Awards. The Billboard magazine named the performers "The Brightest New Stars of 2012", and also presented them with the status of "Breakthrough Group of 2013".

For the next full-scale album to be just as successful, the musicians followed the path they tried out of issuing mini-releases, experimenting with them, testing the reaction of the public. In early 2013, the EP "The Archive" was released. Soundtracks were recorded: “Battle Cry” (for the new Transformers movie), “Warriors” (“Divegent, Ch. 2: Insurgent”), “Monster” (for the game). In addition, individual singles were presented. In most cases, the work of this period was well received by the people. The artists began to write the second major disc.

In the same year, Imagine Dragons went on a tour of Europe and America, which was called Night Visions, presenting their self-titled album. Their fame was so great that the organizers had to add 13 more concerts to the planned concerts. Tickets were all sold out, and the price remained affordable. Even so, the fees were huge. As a result, the musicians got into the top 20 concert tours according to Pollstar. As a result of these trips, a release was released with a recording of live performances.

Artists have repeatedly admitted that they write music on the way. The road gives a lot of vivid impressions and inspires them to be creative. Relatively soon after the end of the tour, a fresh disc "Smoke + Mirrors" appeared (17.02.2015). In conversations with journalists, Reynolds noted their general tendency to perfectionism, work on the second studio album was carried out thoroughly. The guys care about their creative reputation.

The result of this work was a tour around the world, lasting more than 9 months. In this case, that resounding success did not follow. Critics found it "mediocre", the disc was sold in slightly smaller print runs.

After the work done, the band announced their retirement for about a year, leaving fans with a whole film about their concert life "Imagine Dragons In Concert: Smoke + Mirrors". However, the promise made to everyone was not fulfilled. Within a few months, two soundtracks were released. The composition "Sucker For Pain" received a great response, in contrast to the acclaimed film "Suicide Squad" for which it was recorded.

Singles to the third studio album became real hits: "Believer", "Thunder", "Whatever It Takes". The frontman himself assessed the work done as an output to a qualitatively new stage development. However, the critics are not asleep, some of them saw the disc with the telling title "Evolve" as an attempt to please the masses of fans, and not the realization of the potential. Be that as it may, but many tracks really shot. It's a wonderful mix of genres. Thanks to him, each listener fell in love with something of his own among the released songs.

Imagine Dragons are an unusual rock band. It is impossible to see sugary beauties in it, which girls from all over the world would definitely fall in love with. However, these guys were able to win love and recognition thanks to their sincerity, charisma and dedication. The vocalist's voice at concerts is even more beautiful than on record. Artists do not stand still: each release marks a new stage in their work, brings original sound and video. We hope that their energy and potential will last for many years to come.
