Resonance tour schedule. Head of Resonance: this music gives me goosebumps every time The Ukrainian Chamber Symphony Orchestra promised to bring a new program in October this year

On Monday I attended a concert of a chamber group, and, according to other sources, a symphony orchestra " resonance"in the cultural center "Rodina". The concert was held as part of the group's yellow tour. They performed rock classics in orchestral arrangements, from The Beatles to Black Sabbath. I must say that I am generally a fan of orchestral versions of rock and metal. Suffice it to recall my favorite album S&M by Metallica, or Concerto for Group and Orchestra by Deep Purple, or any of the hundreds of orchestral covers of rock classics. Some people find it difficult to perceive music without words, but I, on the contrary, prefer this option. Therefore, the “résonance” concert was the most striking musical event of the year for me. The tickets were not cheap, but I never regretted the money spent on attending this concert. Even the disgustingly tuned sound reinforcement equipment in Rodina did not spoil the impression. Below is a report on the concert with some video, audio recordings and photos.

The “résonance” group, although formally a chamber part of a symphony orchestra, and also often classified as a number of modern rock groups, in fact, is neither one nor the other.

The group's repertoire is not just rock music. These are works that have long been included in the golden fund of humanity, music created by the most talented people on the planet.

This concert program offers a new look at the very essence of the song. Having discarded templates, the listener penetrates into the very heart of the work - exactly what the composer originally put into it. And the radiance of brilliant rock music becomes even more open, and the professional approach of the musicians, the richness of the violins, the nobility of violas, the charm of cellos, the power of double basses and the rock and roll freedom of drums make it rich and colorful, including thanks to elaborate arrangements specifically for chamber music. groups of the symphony orchestra "résonance".

The musicians of the “résonance” group are teachers of the conservatory, musicians of the philharmonic society, the opera house, the house of organ and chamber music from different cities of Ukraine.

On the stage there are instruments on chairs: violins, cellos, and a double bass. On the right, behind a glass screen, so as not to disturb the rest of the orchestra, there is a drum set. A total of 14 people took part in the performance on stage.

The group is a chamber group, so the concert took place without prior announcement of numbers, and without words at all. Those who wished could buy a program of 4 pieces of paper for a completely unhealthy amount of 100 rubles.

The musicians played on stage, and behind them a slideshow with photographs of performers and album covers of groups whose songs were currently being performed was playing on the screen.

First department

1. Pink Floyd - Another Brick In The Wall

We started quickly, as they say, right off the bat, right away with lively hits without warming up.

Unfortunately, in the beginning I hardly recorded anything, but rather enjoyed the music, but there are many recordings of résonance performances on the Internet

“Another Brick in the Wall” is the title of three songs from the rock opera The Wall (1979) by Pink Floyd, which are variations on one main theme and have the subtitles Part I, Part II and Part III (Part I, Part II and Part III respectively). All three songs were written by Pink Floyd bass guitarist Roger Waters, who was one of the band's lead songwriters at the time. This song is one of the most famous in the work of Pink Floyd. In 1980, the song was used as a protest anthem by black students in South Africa during their protests against racial propaganda and bias in the official curriculum, resulting in the song being banned by the government.

2. The Beatles - Come Together

The Beatles (as well as Queen) took up most of the time in this concert.

Someone else's recording from a concert in 2014

"Come Together", the first song on the Abbey Road album, was conceived by John Lennon as a political rallying cry for psychologist and LSD guru activist Timothy Leary and his campaign for governor of California against Ronald Reagan.

3. AC/DC - Back in Black

Back In Black is a famous song by the Australian band AC/DC. It was released on the album of the same name in 1980. Back in Black became the band's best-selling album and one of the most significant in hard rock history. According to VH1, "Back in Black" is ranked fourth on the list of the top forty metal songs, and second in the hard rock style.

4. Eagles - Hotel California

By the way, I have a recording of the same song in a different instrumental performance - on Asian cymbals.

Someone else's recording from a concert in 2014

"Hotel California" is probably the Eagles' most famous song. It describes “a hotel that you can never leave.” The song is reminiscent of the story of a weary traveler trapped in a nightmarish hotel that at first seemed quite attractive. The song is considered by some to allegorically describe the hedonism and self-destruction of music in Hollywood. The idea behind the song is that Hollywood is like a luxury hotel that first welcomes guests and then traps them in its own cunning. There are also more down-to-earth versions: for example, that “hotel” means a prison or a mental hospital.

5. The Doors - People Are Strange

The famous song “People Are Strange” was born by Jim Morrison and Robbie Krieger, guitarist of The Doors, in early 1967 during their walk to the top of the famous Laurel Canyon in Los Angeles. They went up there to watch the sunset. Jim was in a depressed mood, but the sight of the setting sun, coloring the clouds and the incomparable view from the mountain made him perk up. According to Krieger, Morrison realized the cause of his depression. He said something like “people are cold to you if you are a stranger.” This phrase became the key phrase in the future song. Jim immediately wrote the words to “People Are Strange” and Robbie composed the music.

6. Scorpions - Rock You Like A Hurricane

Rock You Like a Hurricane is a song by the famous German rock band Scorpions, released in 1984 as part of the album Love At First Sting. 7. The Beatles - Yesterday

Probably one of the most famous songs of the Fab Four. But, in my opinion, it's too hackneyed.

Yesterday (Russian: “Yesterday”) is a song by The Beatles from the album “Help!”, released in August 1965. Yesterday took first place in the charts in the USA, Canada, New Zealand and other countries, and remains popular today. According to the American performers' rights watchdog Broadcast Music Incorporated, as of December 13, 1999, Yesterday had been broadcast more than 7 million times on American radio and television. In 1999, the British radio station BBC 2 conducted a study based on surveys of music experts and listeners, as well as based on sales figures, according to the results of which it named Yesterday the best song of the 20th century. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, this song has been covered more than any other song ever written.

8. The Rolling Stones - Paint it Black

Also a famous song with a huge number of cover versions, many of which I specially collected for my music library. Now there is a self-recorded version from résonance.

The famous “Paint It Black” by The Rolling Stones is considered by many to be one of the most mysterious compositions of the legendary rock band. It evokes different associations among fans of the group. For some, this is a song about the Vietnam War. Others see in it hints of confrontation with communists, the Catholic religion, visiting brothels and something else. It’s interesting that the Stones didn’t say much about the history of the song’s creation, but their explanations didn’t shed much light on its true meaning.

In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked "Paint It Black" number 174 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. There are a large number of cover versions. The song was performed by Nautilus Pompilius at concerts in 1993; The Moldovan group Zdob si Zdub also recorded their cover of the song (album Ethnomecanica, 2006)

9. Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven

Someone else's recording from a concert in 2013

The British rock band Led Zeppelin has recorded dozens of great compositions, but none of them can compare in popularity with the legendary “Stairway to Heaven”. In the history of the song there was a resounding success, accusations of plagiarism and a hidden satanic message, an incredible number of cover versions, a lot of interesting statements and much more, which to this day maintains public interest in it.

10. Queen - We Will Rock You

The alternating two stomps and one slam from the song “We Will Rock You” are now familiar to every athlete or fan, even if he is indifferent to the work of the rock group Queen, because this rhythm is performed in the stands during most competitions. With its help, fans support their favorite team and try to demoralize the opponent.

11. Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit

Only lazy people didn’t make their own version of this hit; there are many purely string versions, and even a version on the ukulele (ukulele), and in general it sounds good when performed by an orchestra.

Modern society cannot be imagined without advertising, which has occupied television, radio and print media. The appearance of a close-up of the packaging of a product in a feature film or the use of cars from the same manufacturer in the entire film also does not surprise anyone. Everyone understands that such “accidents” are generously paid for.

But this was not always the case, as the history of the song “Smells Like Teen Spirit” confirms. In the title, Kurt Cobain immortalized Mennen's famous Teen Spirit deodorant without receiving a penny from the company. Moreover, this happened completely by accident.

One day, his friend Kathleen Hanna wrote the phrase “Kurt smells like teen spirit” on the wall of Kurt’s house, meaning that Cobain smelled of his girlfriend’s deodorant. But Cobain took her words literally (like “Kurt has a teen spirit”), since he had no idea about this brand. He really liked the rebellious connotation of the expression and used it in the song.

“Smells Like Teen Spirit” (“Smells of youth” - English, “Teen Spirit” - Mennen deodorant) is a song by the American group Nirvana from the album Nevermind. Written by Kurt Cobain, Chris Novoselic and Dave Grohl and produced by Butch Vig. The song is written in a verse-chorus format, where the main four-chord riff is used during the intro and chorus to create an alternating loud and quiet dynamic. "Teen Spirit" is often interpreted as a revolutionary teen anthem; this interpretation is reinforced by the song's video. NME magazine has compiled its own version of a list of the five hundred greatest songs of all time, which the publication's journalists worked on over the years. In first place was, perhaps unexpectedly for many, the composition “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by the cult rock band Nirvana.

12. John Lennon - Imagine

Someone else's recording from a concert in 2014

On the beautiful early morning of June 21, 1971, John Lennon sat down at the piano in his bedroom at Tittenhurst Park to give the world “Imagine,” one of the greatest songs in the history of modern music. He wrote the words and melody literally in one sitting, and in the fall of that year the composition was presented to the public. In the book Lennon in America, authored by Jeffrey Giliano, John called “Imagine” “an anti-religious, anti-nationalist, anti-conservative, anti-capitalist (song) that was accepted because of its sweet coating.” Many are sure that in “Imagine” John Lennon called for giving up not so much material wealth, but rather everything that burdens the mind, prejudices and stereotypes. Well, such a point of view has a right to life. “Imagine” is inducted into the Rock and Roll and Grammy Halls of Fame, and is ranked number three on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

13. Deep Purple - Smoke on the Water

Almost every rock music lover who decides to learn the guitar, one of the first tunes he learns is the famous riff from “Smoke on the Water” by Deep Purple. It sounds impressive, but at the same time it is so technically simple that Ritchie Blackmore, they say, was embarrassed to present the composed melody to his colleagues, considering it too primitive for a musician of his level. As you know, the lyrics of the song talk about a fire that Deep Purple members witnessed in the Swiss city of Montreux. They were there to work on a new album in a mobile studio rented from The Rolling Stones. For these purposes, premises were rented in a local casino. On December 4, 1971, Frank Zappa gave a concert in the theater of this gambling establishment. After this, the hall was to be at the complete disposal of Deep Purple. But fate decreed otherwise. During Zappa's performance, a fire broke out in the room, the cause of which was said to be a rocket launcher fired into the ceiling. It all ended with the entertainment complex being completely destroyed by fire. Musicians from Deep Purple watched what was happening from the window of the Europe Hotel, which is located on the opposite shore of Lake Geneva. So the smoke over the water, after which the new song was named, spread over its surface.

"Paradise City" is a single by the American rock band Guns N' Roses, released in 1987 on their debut album Appetite for Destruction. The song is best known for the following lines: “Take me down to the paradise city/Where the grass is green and the girls are pretty.” This song is often played in stadiums during games along with the song "Welcome To The Jungle" from the same album. The song peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100.

16. Black Sabbath - Paranoid

Who would have thought that a symphony orchestra could play the hits of such rather heavy bands as Black Sabbath, but look, it turned out quite well:

Black Sabbath's legendary "Paranoid" was written in less than half an hour and has become a heavy metal classic. It had a significant influence on the development of the entire genre and was included in various authoritative ratings of the greatest compositions.

19. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication

The album “Californication” became the most commercially successful work of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and gave fans of the famous American rock band several major hits. The title track, which topped several charts, is one of them, although at the time of recording the musicians were already ready to abandon it. Kiedis collected the name “Californication” from two words: California - California, and fornication - adultery, fornication. Finding its Russian-language equivalent is very difficult. In RuNet there are variants “Californovenye”, “Californomania”, “Californication”, “Californization”, “Okalifornivanie” and others. “Californication” talks about the moral decay of modern society. According to the author of the song, California is largely to blame for its decline, which promotes all sorts of excesses and vices: the desire for fame, pornography, a consumerist attitude to life and superficial culture. In a word, we are talking about the fact that the whole world is becoming artificial and false, like California.

20. The Beatles - Let It Be

Someone else's recording from a concert in 2014

21. Queen - The Show Must Go On

The last Queen studio album released during Freddie Mercury's lifetime was Innuendo. While working on it, the health of the band's lead singer, who had AIDS, was rapidly deteriorating, and he realized that he did not have long to live. Perhaps it was the premonition of his imminent death that allowed him to so heartfeltly perform the song “Show Must Go On” (“The Show Must Go On”), which ends “Innuendo”. Many fans of the band consider it one of Queen's best songs and one of the most famous songs in rock music in general. The clip consists of footage from chronicles, concerts, interviews and other Queen videos released from 1980 to 1991. Brian May specially wrote this song for Freddie Mercury, as he was one of the few who knew about his illness. The phrase The Show Must Go On itself represents a strict rule of the theater that has existed since the time of Moliere: the performance must continue, no matter what, the performance must be performed at any cost. Now the phrase The Show Must Go On is completely associated with Freddie Mercury and his life, which he lived as one bright show, stopping at nothing.

At this point, the concert seemed to end, but the heated audience gave such a wild ovation that the musicians gave two more encores.

For the first time, we played two songs from the new, red tour, which will be presented to the general public only in October of this year.

“Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” became the first hit for British synth-pop duo Eurythmics to reach the top of the charts in different countries, and remains their most famous song to this day. It would not be an exaggeration to say that it is the calling card of the group. The most popular cover version of “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” was recorded by Marilyn Manson. In his autobiography, he said that the idea to perform a slow version of the song came to him when he was first high on acid.

25. Metallica - The Unforgiven

The last song, played for the second time as an encore, when the group was about to leave, but the audience did not let it go, again giving a wild ovation, was the group’s most famous composition - The Unforgiven. Yes, the performer had to sit down again and adjust the instruments again. By the way, this is the only official video of the group résonance:

The concert was wonderful. And if suddenly the group decides to visit our city again with the next red concert tour, I will definitely go to this event, no matter how much money it costs.

By the way, regarding the cost of tickets. There seems to be no point in buying at the Rodina ticket office. With the stated cost of tickets at 800-2400 rubles, people bought tickets for 1400 for the last rows of the amphitheater, under the balcony, while on promotions, on biglione (rot he in hell) or by ordering on VKontakte or by phone at alternative ticket offices, a ticket for the last row of the stalls cost about 1200 rubles. For 800 rub. There were only tickets for the last row of the balcony, and they quickly ran out, the balcony was sold for 1000-1200.

P.S. By the way, during the preparation of this recording I found one very interesting resource - song-story.ru, dedicated to the history of the creation of famous songs.

Carefully! A musical scam is moving through the cities of Russia from west to east!

To confirm this, I am posting an article about a dubious concert in Sumy:

The ability to present oneself is now often more important than the existing content. A well-made cover, being on trend and a non-standard approach easily defeat professionalism, generally accepted concepts about the level of presentation of material and other things of little interest to the average person. Evening of rock hits at the theater. Shchepkina, which attracted a full house and enthusiastic applause from the audience, is proof of this.

"Rock hit" posters

And it all started, as it should be, with posters. All over Ukraine they were the same, and everywhere from the very beginning the information was not entirely truthful. The chamber group “Résonance”, which, as Sumy residents might have noticed, consisted of 14 people, so purely formally did not have the moral right to write “Symphony Orchestra”, much less in capital letters. It is enough to go to Wikipedia to find out: the basis of a symphony orchestra is made up of four groups of instruments - bowed strings, wood and brass winds, and percussion. “Résonance” did not have any woodwinds or brass, there were only bowed strings and a drummer. What does this mean - in front of us was just a chamber group, which the performers of rock hits reported on the posters, but in small letters.
Attentive Sumy residents should have immediately become interested in the inconsistencies in the posters and videos on Youtube
In principle, this was their main preliminary falsehood, which could interest the most attentive Sumy residents. Such people, in theory, should have immediately watched any of the many “Résonance” videos presented on Youtube, then the sound level would have become noticeable. Then it would be ideal for a “control” to watch something like Metallica or Scorpions with a real symphony orchestra and conclude that a diet version of what was announced on the posters is coming to us.

It couldn't be more hit than this

The people of Sumy did not do that. And, probably, there is nothing wrong with this, because what did those present on February 3 at the theater want? Shchepkin, that’s what we got. And these are your favorite rock hits! All 22 songs performed were selected, golden compositions from the best rock and roll bands of all time. I won’t list them - the names of the groups are written on the poster, and any small fan of classic rock music will be able to guess which songs from their repertoire were performed. Here it’s like Mayakovsky: “We say the party, we mean Lenin.” Only here instead of Ilyich there is Lennon, implying whom “Imagine” immediately begins. Or if we say “Queen”, then it will be “We will rock you” and “Show must go on”.

There were mostly young people in the hall - the main fans of rock music in Sumy
Press releases about the group “Résonance” say that its members include “teachers from the conservatory, musicians from the philharmonic, the opera house, the house of organ and chamber music from different cities of Ukraine.” We don’t rule it out, but we’re also not happy for all of the above-mentioned musical institutions. We advise Sumy residents to go to our native regional philharmonic and listen to the Renaissance chamber orchestra - the difference will be noticeable. Particularly striking was the only “rock” representative of the “Résonance” lineup - the drummer. If his colleagues from the groups whose compositions he performed had heard his playing, he would hardly have avoided the “dark” one.

Everyone is happy

Among the positive aspects of the concert, in addition to the musical material itself, one can also mention the photo design broadcast on the big screen. It was well chosen and on topic.

A beautiful photo series of your favorite legendary rock bands put you in the right mood
It is worth paying tribute to the kindness of the Sumy residents: their love for wonderful examples of world rock music is so great that they seemed to absolutely not care what level the performance was presented. We found out the next song, sang along to it quietly, like in karaoke - and Monday became not as dull as usual. In the end, everyone was happy: both the musicians and the audience, and this is the most important thing.

Resonance is not a rock band or a symphony orchestra, but something in between. The musicians are in classic black suits. In the same way as their colleagues in some famous theater, violins, violas and cellos are tuned up before a concert. But in the notes, instead of Bach or Verdi, there are Pink Floyd and Queen with Freddie Mercury, and before the concert the musicians do not a rehearsal, but a sound check. Somewhere on the Internet, someone reproached the group that they do not have the right to declare “symphony orchestra” on their posters, but the head of Resonance has an answer to this.

We don't really have brass instruments, we have strings and drums. But this is correct, it is accepted. We are not deceiving anyone. We indicate “symphony orchestra” on the posters, but we always write “chamber group,” explained Vitaly Fedorenko, technical director of Resonance.

The Ukrainian group Resonance appeared two years ago. Its creators decided to play at the intersection of classical and rock and repeat the success of the Finnish cello-playing group “Apocaliptika”. The original cover versions for Resonance are made by one arranger, whose name is kept secret, like a trade secret.

This is a professional musician who has lived in music all his life. “He continues to write for us now,” Vitaly Fedorenko explains only dryly.

After the sound check, the musicians themselves admit that playing rock on violins is not so easy.

There are many difficulties, the main one is that rock music involves heaviness. Metal is a heavy sound. An electric guitar has a different sound; the principle of sound production is completely different than that of wooden string instruments. That is, we need to redo the style of play. But we decided that the violin should remain a violin,” noted Diana Nagornaya, “first violin” of Resonance. The purpose of her instrument was to largely replace the bright vocals of rock stars.

The group consists of 13 classically trained professional musicians and one drummer. All young - the average age in the team is 25 years. But they handle violins, violas, cellos and double basses perfectly.

This tour is called “yellow”, but there is no need to look for any connection with the colors of the Ukrainian flag here.

We are out of politics. We are from different cities of Ukraine. Yellow Toure arose even before all these events began - on May 22, 2013. And we paint our programs in different colors according to our feelings,” the musicians emphasized.

The group has been on a big tour since February 20 this year. They have traveled all over Russia, they are conquering the Far East and will end their big trip on April 30 in Rostov. Director Vitaly Fedorenko talks about big victories half-wheezing - he has a terrible cold. But he has no moral right to suspend the tour: everywhere is sold out, spectators are waiting.

And then the first composition sounded. An anxious wait loomed. There are a lot of musicians gathered in the hall, but already in the first seconds the musicians are filled with applause. This was learned from Another Brick in the Wall 1979 from the repertoire of Pink Floyd. Young and happy Roger Waters, David Gilmour and other members of the legendary team look at the audience from the big screen. Staged photographs for posters and magazines give way to photographs from stadium concerts, from which the most powerful energy emanates.

The fervent time of The Beatles, Come Together comes, and then AC/DC - Back in Black burst out.

Of course, rock hits sound completely different when symphonically arranged. In some the differences are barely noticeable, in others new accents are placed.

Yes, in principle, it’s good, but it seems that the violin is getting out of whack, and there aren’t enough wind players. But overall everything is fine. And the compositions were well chosen,” said viewer Dmitry Elagin.

I am happy to sit and record on my mobile phone. I would also like to do something similar. Give some intimacy to your works. My guys gave me a task - I’m doing it! - the vocalist of the group “Heart Block” Alexander Khudeev laughed.

Scorpions, Nirvana, Doors, the Beatles again, Bon Jovi, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Kiss with the famous makeup on their faces, Deep Purple, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Black Sabbath, Guns N’ Roses, Eagles and Europe. Incredibly strong energy comes from Queen with Freddie Mercury. On the big screen he is young, wearing a royal robe and sneakers, singing We Are the Champions at a concert in Budapest in 1986. Resonance in this sense is a kind of relay: the lights on the musicians are specially dimmed in order to highlight the rock legends on the screen.

At almost every new composition the audience bursts into applause. During the intermission, the audience actively shares their impressions, and then eagerly return to the hall to enjoy further. The symphonic rock concert lasted 2.5 hours and created a real sensation.

“Listening to your performance, you understand that this music is truly created to excite this world. And what was performed as an encore was simply magnificent! I hope I will hear the fabulous sounds of your instruments more than once. Now I’m your fan... - viewer Nadezhda Konkova noted on the VKontakte group page. - P.S. I live in Uglegorsk, 200 km from Blagoveshchensk. When I was driving to your concert, on the way through the window I saw a large black bus with the word “resonance” written on it. Guys, it was your bus. My happiness knew no bounds..."

“Thank you for the concert in Blagoveshchensk! It was delicious! We are waiting for you on the "red tour"! The concert ended an hour ago, and I still get goosebumps, it felt like the music was playing right in my chest)))!!! You guys are great!” - wrote Ivan Zaitsev.

Yes, I myself get goosebumps every time from such a performance, but I’ve heard it almost a hundred times already,” confirmed the director of the group, Vitaly Fedorenko.

At the end, the audience was in for a surprise: Resonance announced a new tour, this time it will be red - Red Toure. It will take place in October this year.

It will feature the most difficult compositions for us - “heavy” rock hits from the repertoire of Rammstein, Aerosmith and even Marilyn Manson. This is the highest aerobatics for symphonic instruments,” promised the “first violin” of the group, Diana Nagornaya.

The hall did not want to let the beloved musicians go. They played a few more encores and took their leave. We just have to wait for autumn. There is a high probability that tickets for the next concert will not be available.
