St. Tatiana's Day January 25th. Tatyana's day - church holiday

The Holy Martyr Tatiana is remembered by Orthodox believers on January 25 - it is then that the day of students is celebrated, of which she is the patroness. Sputnik tells about the history of the holiday, as well as signs and traditions that are customary to honor today not only by students, but also by many others.

Martyr Tatiana - patroness of students

Tatyana's Day or the Day of Russian Students is associated with the name of the early Christian martyr Tatiana of Rome, who is remembered in the Orthodox Church on January 25: on this day the Divine Liturgy is served in churches.

For believers, the martyrdom of the saint is important. Tatiana was born into a noble Roman family of secret Christians and devoted herself to the service of the church. During times of persecution, tortures tried to force her to renounce her faith. Her life describes many miracles that occurred during the torture. For example, it is said about eight tormentors who, amazed at her steadfastness, asked for forgiveness, after which they saw angels behind St. Tatiana's back and believed in Christ with all their hearts. Three times she destroyed temples with the power of faith and words. The martyr was not burned by the fire into which she was thrown, and the lion in the arena only licked her feet. In the end, she was still executed for disobedience.

The history of the celebration of January 25

The holiday began to be celebrated as the birthday of the University of Moscow: Empress Elizaveta Petrovna established it back in 1755. Subsequently, in one of the outbuildings of the old university building, a house church of the Holy Martyr Tatiana was created, and she herself was declared the patroness of all Russian students.

By the middle of the 19th century, the day, solemn for the professors and students of Moscow University, grew into a large-scale celebration of the city intelligentsia, then went beyond the capital, and eventually transformed into a student's day, which gathered all members of the student fraternity (including in Belarus).

In the Russian Empire, celebrations were traditionally noisy and cheerful: after official ceremonies in educational institutions, festivities were held everywhere. The Frenchman Olivier, who was the owner of the Hermitage, even gave the restaurant hall for student festivities. Even the royal gendarmes that day, having met a drunk student, offered him their help.

After the October Revolution, Tatyana's Day was forgotten for more than half a century, but they began to celebrate it again in 1995, after the second opening of the mentioned temple at the university. And they began to officially celebrate the Day of Russian Students only in 2005, when a federal law came into force to consider it a memorable date for the country.

What is symbolic, the date of the celebration - January 25 - falls just on the last day of the 21st academic week and the end of the session of the first semester, followed by the winter holidays.

Traditions and signs on Tatyana's day: student and folk

On this day, it is customary to pray to the martyr Tatiana: to ask her for success in difficult teaching, for enlightenment.

One of the popular student traditions says that on the night of January 25, you should call for good luck by sticking your grade book out the window. According to another tradition, you need to draw a house with a chimney from which smoke comes out at the very end of the student's record book: allegedly, the longer the smoke plume, the easier the upcoming exams and the school year will be. It is considered great luck if the next day after the holiday, on January 26, an exam falls out: they say it passes easily and quickly. By the way, during the holiday itself, in no case should you study notes. There is an opinion that success in exams can be achieved by loudly celebrating the holiday.

There are also remarkable folk omens. For example, in the old days on Tatyana's Day, girls lured suitors: they hid feather panicles in the houses of young people - it was believed that after that the lover would marry the girl, and the marriage would be strong. Also, a tradition has survived to this day, according to which people who wipe their feet on a doormat laid at the door will be frequent guests in the house. According to popular beliefs, it is on January 25 that the sun turns towards summer.

There are also prohibitions: quarrels with loved ones are unacceptable on Tatyana's day, as well as refusal to help those who ask for it. It is worth celebrating the holiday in a clean house, otherwise you can bring trouble on yourself.

On this day, older women in the family need to bake a loaf, symbolizing the heavenly body. You need to eat it with the whole family, so that everyone gets a piece of the sun, and it will soon return to people.

January 25 is the favorite date of all Russian students and women who were given this beautiful name by their parents. Tatyana's Day is a church holiday honoring the Roman martyr Tatiana, a girl who gave her life for her faith in Christ.

In 1755, on Tatiana's Day, Empress Elizabeth put her imperial signature under the decree on the founding of the very first Moscow University. In 1791, a student house church of St. Tatiana was opened in a small outbuilding of the educational institution. A combination of random circumstances led to the fact that January 25 first became the Foundation Day of the University, and a little later - celebrated on a grand scale in the capital.

Today, students from Russia and the countries of the former USSR celebrate the Day of the Holy Martyr Tatiana, the patroness of Russian students.

The administration of the Pravoslavie.fm portal congratulates students on their professional holiday!

On January 25, 1755, the Russian Empress Elizaveta Petrovna signed a decree on the establishment of Moscow University. In the Russian Orthodox Church, the memory of the holy martyr Tatiana is celebrated on this day.

The Russian people have always been very pious, and they tried to celebrate all the events of their lives with prayer, to call on God and the saints for help in their affairs. Education is undoubtedly one of the main things in human life and needs a special patron, which was Saint Tatiana.

When Moscow University was already built, a temple was opened in it in honor of the martyr Tatiana. Later, under Emperor Nicholas I, the day of the establishment of Moscow State University was officially celebrated as a day for all Russian students. So the holy martyr Tatyana became the patroness of Russian education.

Saint Tatiana was born in Rome at the very beginning of the 3rd century. The saint's parents, secret Christians, were wealthy and distinguished citizens.

Under various pretexts, Christians tried to evade participation in public holidays, where sacrifices were necessarily made to idols, and for this they were persecuted by many emperors even to death.

Even as a little girl, Saint Tatiana participated in secret divine services and wished to openly confess the faith of Christ and enlighten others.

When Tatyana grew up, her dream came true. For her pious life, for her devotion to God and her constant readiness to do something for others, she was ordained a deaconess. Her duties included teaching the faith to the catechumens of women and girls, preparing them for holy Baptism and caring for the poor, the sick and orphans.

At this time, the persecution of Christians broke out again in Rome. It was ordered that all citizens make sacrifices to the gods, and they seized all those who refused to fulfill this command. Among those captured was St. Tatiana.

Make a sacrifice to Apollo! Roman officials said. Instead, the saint began to pray to Christ. And suddenly the earth shook, the statue of Apollo fell and broke into small pieces.

Then the angry torturers dragged the martyr to the place of torture. There she was beaten in the face and torn with iron hooks. The executioners were so amazed at the stamina of the martyr that they themselves believed and were executed.

The next day, the ruler of Rome, Ulpian, himself undertook to judge the martyr Tatyana. When she was brought from the dungeon, everyone was amazed that not even a trace of yesterday's torment was visible on her.

He ordered to strip the saint and cut her body with sharp razors. Then they stretched her on the ground and beat her with rods for a long time so that the tormentors themselves quickly lost strength and were often replaced. She remained unmoved.

The next day the saint was again unharmed. On this day, with a prayer, she crushed the temple of the goddess Diana, and later - the statue of Zeus, and for this she suffered new terrible torments. A lion was released on her, but he began to lick her feet.

Finally, the saint was thrown into the fire. But the fire did not touch not only her holy body, but even her long hair, with which, like a cloak, the saint covered her nakedness.

Finally, exhausted by the steadfastness of the saint, the prefect Ulpian pronounced the sentence of death, and the martyr Tatiana was beheaded.

Together with her, her father, who declared himself a Christian, was also executed. All this happened in 225.

Also today the Church honors the memory of the saints:

Saint Sava, Archbishop of Serbia, Rev. Martinian of Belozersky, Martyr Mertius, Martyr Peter Absalomite (of Ani), Rev. Pachomius of Kensk, Rev. Eupraxia of Tavenis, Rev. Galaktion of Beloezersky, Elijah the Wonderworker and others.

In the world on this day:

There is such a wonderful day in winter when the sun is sure to peep out and it seems as if spring has already come. That day is January 25th. In the old days, a holiday was celebrated at this time Tatyana Kreshchenskaya ", or " sun ". It was believed that no matter how cold January was outside, the sun would always delight people with its rays. Currently, January 25 is considered the feast of St. Tatiana and the Day of Russian students.

Tatyana's day is a church holiday.

First of all, Tatyana's Day is a Christian holiday celebrated by all Orthodox believers. Its other name is Tatiana Kreshchenskaya or Tatiana Rimskaya. Tatyana Rimskaya is also revered by the Catholic Church.
The story of the great martyr says that she was born into a wealthy believing family. She strongly believed in God, took a vow of chastity, for which she was even awarded the title of deaconess. When the persecution of Christians reached its peak, the pagans seized her and wanted to force her to pray to their god, but Tatyana Rimskaya read a prayer, which caused an earthquake that destroyed the pagan temple.

After that, the martyr was tortured for a long time, but the traces of mutilation disappeared again and again. She was also thrown into prison, locked in the same cell with a lion, but these attempts to kill her were not successful. As a result, Tatyana and her father were executed by cutting off their heads. For her torment, Tatyana was canonized as a saint. Tatyana's day in the Christian calendar is celebrated on January 25th. By tradition, prayers are read in all churches. At home, people also pray, asking Tatyana to grant them happiness and patience, as well as academic success.

Tatyana's day is a national holiday.

On January 25, 1755, Empress Elizabeth signed a decree establishing the Moscow State University. Almost always, this day was considered just the birthday of the university, but since 2005, January 25 has been the All-Russian Student Day. In one of the premises of Moscow State University there is even a church dedicated to the Holy Great Martyr Tatyana.

On January 25, all students celebrate this important day for them. They walk, relax, organize concerts and festive events. Many traditions, signs and rituals are associated with this day. According to many students, on this day you can catch good luck for passing exams. There is an interesting custom - to go out onto the balcony with a grade book in hand and invite luck with the phrase: "Freebie, come." If someone shouts from the street in response to "already on the way", then this will be a good sign.

This day has two beginnings, which are not connected with each other historically, but which were subsequently combined into one day. This is a bright Orthodox holiday and a holiday of knowledge, a holiday of students. Therefore, on January 25, people go to church, asking God to give them, among other things, knowledge, as well as patience and diligence in their studies.

Folk traditions and customs on Tatyana's day.

On this day, candles are lit in the church for academic success. They pray to the Martyr Tatiana in difficult teaching and enlightenment. On January 25, they also pray to St. Savva for various ailments, the icon of the Mother of God "Mamming" - for help during childbirth, for breastfeeding (with a lack of mother's milk) and for the health of babies.

Since ancient times, on Tatyana's day, it was customary to bake loaves in the form of the Sun.

“Tatyana bakes a loaf, and beats the rugs on the river, and leads a round dance!” They used to say in the old days.

This is the day of Tatyana Kreshchenskaya and Babi Kut. Babi kut - a place near the Russian stove, a woman's corner where all the household utensils stood, and the hostess spent a lot of time.

In the family, this place was called the sun. Therefore, on Tatiana's Day, the "bolshukhs" - the eldest housewives in the family - baked a large rug, a symbol of the sun. The same housewives took the pastry out of the oven, let the bread cool a little and broke off a piece of bread warm and distributed it to all family members.

Such was the tradition on Tatyana's Day - to invite spring, inviting the luminary to return to the people as soon as possible and drive away the severe Epiphany frosts.

According to tradition, each member of the family had to eat at least a piece of such a loaf so that the Sun would give him some of his warmth.

  • On Tatyana's Day, women twisted balls of yarn as tight and as large as possible - so that the heads of cabbage were born tight and large.
  • On Tatyana's Day, from ancient times it was considered necessary to go to the river and knock out all the dirt accumulated in them during the winter holidays from the rugs.
  • Girls on this day, early in the morning, went to the river, where rugs were knocked out. Then the rugs were hung on the fences so that the guys could judge the girl from them - what kind of wife would she make.

Signs, rituals and conspiracies for students on Tatyana's day.

Tatyana's Day is both a holiday and a special date for students. For them, this is not only an excuse to digress from the sciences and plunge into fun, but also an opportunity to attract good grades to the record book with the help of special rituals and conspiracies.

The most important student tradition on Tatiana's Day is, of course, the call of Shara.

This is done as follows: on the night of January 25, students go out onto the balcony or look out the window, shake their record book, calling “Shara, come!”. And in response you need to hear (and not necessarily from a student!) “Already on the way!”. This ritual allows you to get good marks "on the ball", i.e. without much effort.

Also on January 25, students draw a house with a chimney on the last page of their grade book. Moreover, the house should be small, small, and the smoke from the chimney should be long, long. To make it more authentic, it is drawn in the form of a swirling labyrinth with one line. And so that the line in no case crosses and does not touch itself.

If you manage to draw such a "smoke" without an error (crossing and touching the line) - this is a good omen. And the longer this “smoke” turns out, the easier and more successful your studies will be this year.

Finally, on Tatiana's Day, in no case should you study and even look at the notes! On January 25, you need to forget about classes altogether! Only rest and fun! So that studying was not a burden, but a joy.

Love spell of the groom on Tatyana's day.

  • Also on Tatyana's Day, girls lure suitors. Such a trick. Early in the morning on January 25, the girl needs to thoroughly knock out the rug, and then spread it at the entrance to the house. Next, it is necessary in one way or another to lure the one whom she wants to be her suitor - if you manage to get the guy to wipe his feet on the rug prepared for him, then he will constantly be pulled into the girl's house.
  • There is another way to love the groom - with the help of a panicle, which the girl makes from rags and feathers. On the same day, such a panicle should be hidden unnoticed by everyone in the house of “your” groom. If this succeeds, the guy will not go anywhere.

By the way, the mothers of the guys on this day made sure that their sons were not bewitched in such ways by the one they did not want to see as a daughter-in-law. Therefore, they tried to keep their sons at home that day, and the girls who tried to visit in one way or another were treated with caution.

Folk omens on Tatyana's day.

Since ancient times, weather patterns have been monitored on Tatyanin.

  • If it snows on the day of Epiphany Tatiana (Tatiana's Day, Babi Kut) - then a frosty February and summer with rains are expected.
  • Sunrise on Tatyana's day personified early spring, the imminent arrival of birds and the early spawning of fish.
  • If it is frosty and sunny on this day, then the harvest will be rich!

Many signs for Tatyana's Day were associated with the preparation of the ritual loaf, which was mentioned above:

  • If the bread rose like a mound in the middle, then wait for good luck this year and life will get better, it will go uphill.
  • If the loaf turned out smooth and without flaws - a sure sign of a calm year and measured life.
  • If the loaf burned, they rejoiced, and the birthday girl had to eat the burnt crust.
  • If the loaf cracked, it was considered a bad omen.

Congratulations for Tatyana.

Let Tatiana give you

Fresh feelings like the first snow

Longing with despondency will go away

And everywhere there will be success!

On Tatyana's day, accept congratulations,

All those who are called holy names.

I wish you a good mood

And smile at simple joys.

Let Tatyana, luck shines on you.

May happiness meet you at the door.

Let the one who loves reciprocate,

Will give you all the delights of love.

Forget the January frosts

Hurry to friends and have fun

Before it's too late

While life boils with happiness!

Meet Tatyana's day in a big way -

Don't sleep like a polar bear!

On Tatyana's day, we hasten to congratulate

Without exception, all Tanya,

To temper their steep temper

We will give them flowers, toys.

We will smile at them on this day

Forgive the whim, any flaw,

We laugh together with them

We will support Tatyana in difficult times.

May this day, on their bright holiday

Dreams come true cherished.

May the day be like a little prankster

Will give happiness the wings of light.

Our Tanya, from the heart

You accept congratulations:

We wish the girl of dreams

Spiritual, external beauty!

So that no male hero

Didn't pass by without gasping!

Tatiana, dear Tatiana!

Today is your holy Tatyana's Day

I am intoxicated and drunk from your beauty ...

I wish that every new day

Your smile was illuminated,

May you always be the happiest of all!

To have fewer life mistakes

And there was always a fervent, ringing laugh!

So that you are surrounded by love

To rejoice in the sun and moon ...

So that happiness is only for you

And a desperate success awaited in life!

For almost two hundred years, January 25 (according to the new style) has stood out among a large number of holidays. And this is no coincidence: on this day, all Tatiana and all students gather together, celebrating Tatiana's day, or Student's Day.

From the history of Tatyana's Day

Born at the beginning of the 3rd century, Saint Tatiana was brought up by her parents in the Christian faith. Having crossed the threshold of adulthood, the girl adhered to virginity and chastity, subordinating the flesh to the spirit with prayer and fasting.

She carefully looked after the sick, went to prison, helped the poor in any way she could, as she constantly tried to please God with good deeds. For such a righteous life, Tatiana was made a deaconess.

In those days, Christians were severely persecuted for their faith by pagan emperors, daily subjecting many of them to martyrdom. So Tatyana was seized by the pagans and brought to the temple of Apollo, where they wanted to force her to sacrifice to the pagan god. But suddenly an earthquake began, and the statue of Apollo was shattered into pieces. Then Tatyana was summoned by the head of the city Ulpian and ordered her to renounce Christ, but she was unshakable. Saint Tatyana was subjected to torture and torment for a whole day, and then they were imprisoned for the night.

All night the dungeon was illuminated with a wonderful light, Tatyana praised God at the top of her voice, and the angels echoed the saint and healed her wounds. But even this miraculous phenomenon did not bring the head of the city to reason, and he ordered that the saint be tortured with iron hooks. Subsequently, Tatyana was transferred to the temple of Zeus, where she was imprisoned for two days. On the third day, priests and people came to the building to offer sacrifice to Zeus. Throwing open the doors of the temple, they saw that the statue of their god had fallen and shattered. For this, Tatyana was given to be torn to pieces by a lion. But the mighty and terrible beast did not rush at the martyr, but began to caress her. Then they decided to burn Tatyana, but the fire did not harm her either. Seeing that nothing could destroy the saint, she was brought to court, where she was sentenced to death, and Tatyana was beheaded with a sword. Together with her, her father was also executed, because they knew that he was also a Christian.

Decree of Empress Elizabeth

But not only for the good deeds, merciful soul and strong faith of St. Tatiana, this day has become a universal holiday for students. The history of this day in Russia began in the 18th century. On January 25 (12), 1755, the day of memory of St. Tatyana, Empress Elizaveta Petrovna signed a decree submitted by Count I. I. Shuvalov on the establishment of Moscow University. A temple at the university was consecrated in the name of Tatyana.

So, the Day of the Angel of all Orthodox Tatyanas received a new meaning: now it was celebrated not only by believers, but also by students. The saint began to be considered the patroness of students and from Tatyana the Martyr she turned into Tatyana University. In the 18th - early 19th centuries, this day was mentioned in the prayer service of the university church as the Foundation Day of Moscow University.

In the 18th century, Tatyana's Day was held widely, on a grand scale, as it was an official and newfangled holiday: from year to year solemn speeches and congratulations were made on this day, feasts were arranged.
