The poster of The Cherry Orchard in Moscow presents dramas, comedies, tragedies and even real musicals based on the best works of the most famous classics (Chekhov, Gogol, Dostoevsky, Shakespeare, Moliere, etc.), as well as Soviet and modern Russian and foreign playwrights. These performances do not denounce, but call for admiration and compassion.

Also in the repertoire of the Cherry Orchard Theater there are performances for children and teenagers - bright, musical and full of meaning. They are able to instill a love of theater in even the youngest spectators.

In addition to performances, the theater regularly hosts other cultural events: Poetry Days, meetings with directors, discussions of performances with audiences, “Nights at the Theater” and much more.

There is probably no theater in which Chekhov’s “The Cherry Orchard” would not be staged. Sovremennik is no exception. But for him, this play directed by Galina Volchek truly became a calling card.

About the play “The Cherry Orchard”

Galina Volchek managed to do the seemingly impossible. Her “The Cherry Orchard” is not a shocking interpretation of the classics, not unexpected interpretations or shocking details that could be “read between the lines.” The performance is built on a subtle play of halftones. The main thing that the director and actors want to convey to the audience is feelings. Despair, humility, hope... the fate of each of the heroes is shown in amazing unity with the era.

Galina Volchek also presented the Cherry Orchard itself as an active character. It is into it, in the hope of lingering at least for a moment in the disappearing past, that the heroes peer with bitterness and longing.

The premiere of the play “The Cherry Orchard” at Sovremennik took place on September 9, 1997. In those years, the best theater actors were involved in it - Elena Yakovleva, Igor Kvasha and many others. Since then, the lineup has not become less stellar, but has undergone some changes. But the leading actors, Marina Neelova and Sergei Garmash, continue to delight the audience with their brilliant, talented performances.

Other director's events

A contemporary for Galina Volchek is life. She admitted more than once that she could not imagine herself without this theater. And he certainly wouldn’t be what he is without her. On her native stage, Volchek staged many brilliant performances. “Two on a swing”, “The gin game”, “Murlin Murlo”, “Three sisters”, “Hare love story” - these are just the latest of them.

On October 28, 2018, I was lucky enough to attend the play “Sacred Monsters,” staged based on the play of the same name by Jean Cocteau at the Moscow Cherry Orchard Theater Center.
It was my first time at this theater; to my shame, I knew nothing about it, and unexpectedly, for me personally, this evening became one of the best Moscow theater evenings this year.
Cocteau, like Maugham before him, tells the story about the world of the theater, about the game of life and about everyday life, as the embodiment of an endless play, carefully, he is attentive to details and characters, pays attention to the little things and so deeply draws the relationships of the main characters that this play has been loved and staged by various theaters and studios in different countries for many years. Some tell it better, some tell it worse, the art of theater is a very subjective story. But for the first time in a long time, I kept an eye on what was happening on stage, because I was being shown a real “theater.” The way he should be.
The story of the relationship between a middle-aged, successful acting couple, into whose life a young ambitious woman intervenes, who both destroys and at the same time strengthens their union, was told very subtly.
The magnificent Olga Shirokova, who played Esther, painted such a powerful, such a stunning female image with every movement, phrase, and turn of her head that it was impossible, if not breathtaking, to tear yourself away from the stage. Initially large and handsome Florent, played by Alexander Vilkin, became small, cowardly and helpless next to Esther.
And so ugly, tasteless, unattractive, which was emphasized by her ridiculous, vulgar outfits, the young predator Lian looked against her background, whom Irina Sologalova got to embody, that, realizing that the actress was very pretty, I was even upset at how disgusting the role was her character came out.
The rest of the characters and Esther's friend - Charlotte. And the beautiful, so wise maid, who is also the confidante of the main character - Lyulya, came out bright and lively, performed by Maria Ostapenko and Lyudmila Kozhevnikova. And the whole story about the theatricality of life as such, about male weakness, about peremptory ambitious youth, and about the wisdom of a mature woman, I think that remains modern regardless of when it is played, because human feelings do not change.
After the performance, I went out with my friend, and everyone said that the whole story was a very good illustration of the most difficult thing, which so often turns out to be tragic - the ability to let go in order to find it.
And that special strength is needed in order to forgive betrayal and accept the fact that it remains a “dagger in the heart” until the end of days.
In the preamble to the play “Sacred Monsters,” Cocteau writes: “No retrospective, and especially nothing pictorial. If the author, together with the artist and performers, achieves this, the goal has been achieved.”
And I am sure that the goal that the author voices to those who touch his story has been fully achieved here.

Known in Moscow, the remarkable theater center called “The Cherry Orchard” is a state-funded cultural institution in the capital. This theater is led by its founder and permanent creative inspirer Alexander Vilkin. Throughout its existence, the theater never ceases to follow the basic principles and ideals. He also worked on television and acted in films. As a director, A. Vilkin staged more than a hundred wonderful performances in various theaters across the country. Today, the talented director is also a professor at the Theater Institute. B.V. Shchukin. Vilkin always dreamed of his own stage for his native theater. However, his dream came true only in the year of the anniversary. Twenty years after its founding, the theater finally moved into its own building, which officially opened its doors in the center of Moscow on Malaya

About the name of the center

The Cherry Orchard Theater on Sukharevskaya is closely connected with the dramaturgy of A.P. Chekhov. It is no coincidence that its name is identical to the name of one of the plays of a classic of Russian literature. When founding the collective, A. Vilkin, as artistic director, sought to create his own artistic space, where creative issues would be based on civil and moral principles, which the great Russian writer A. Chekhov preached in his plays, as in life.

Theater repertoire

From the very first day of its foundation, the Cherry Orchard Theater on Sukharevskaya has invariably included in its repertoire productions based on the best works of famous playwrights of the past and present. Here you can see performances of different genres and artistic styles. The viewer will find in “The Cherry Orchard” a sparkling French farce and an ironic-sad tragicomedy, a multi-layered psychological drama and an emotional, philosophical and paradoxical drama. This metropolitan group performs wonderful performances not only based on Gogol, Ostrovsky, Jean-Baptiste Moliere, Albee Edward, and many other famous authors.

Not only do professionals respond positively to the productions of “The Cherry Orchard,” ordinary spectators also admire them. Today the theater's repertoire includes 19 performances, including children's productions. In the summer, the season is closed, but in mid-September the Cherry Orchard Theater on Sukharevskaya will begin to operate at full capacity. The playbill for the performances is already on the website of the theater center, and tickets are on sale.

Performance “The Cherry Orchard” directed by the artistic director of the Sovremennik Theater Galina Volchek, it ran for more than 200 performances and has remained in the repertoire of one of the most popular Moscow theaters for 13 years.

This legendary production has an unusual fate, because the premiere performance "The Cherry Orchard" took place not in the native walls of the theater, but in New York, at the Broadway Martin Beck Theater. The play “The Cherry Orchard” Contemporary opened the 1997 season, and for two weeks American audiences watched with delight this production of Anton Chekhov's classic play.

From America, the theater brought the prestigious Drama Desk Award, which is awarded in the field of drama and was the first time awarded to a foreign theater. The Moscow public warmly greeted the new production, and performances at Chistye Prudy invariably ended with a standing ovation from the audience.

Since then play "The Cherry Orchard" went on tour in many European countries, and during the Paris performances, the famous actress Fanny Ardant could not hold back her tears and expressed a desire to come to Moscow to see other Sovremennik performances.

The play by Anton Chekhov, written in 1903, has long become a theatrical classic and after the first production at the Moscow Art Theater by Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko, this work gained enormous popularity and is still staged not only in Russia, but also on theater stages around the world .

Over the years, the play was staged by Sofia Giatsintova, Anatoly Efros, Peter Brook,

Sam Mendes, Tom Stoppard and other outstanding directors. In recent years, productions of Chekhov's comedy have been successfully staged at the RAMT, Moscow Art Theater. Chekhov and Lenkom.

But, despite the numerous interpretations of the famous play and its textbook nature, the Sovremennik Theater managed to create an original performance in which Chekhov’s plot regains its relevance, and in a breathtaking performance a long-gone world appears before the audience, giving way to a new time.

Lyubov Ranevskaya (Marina Neelova) and her brother Leonid Gaev (Igor Kvasha) are attached to a beautiful cherry orchard and perceive it as a symbol of the nobility and their youth. The garden can be saved by turning the estate into a profitable place, but the main characters of the play cannot do this.

IN play "The Cherry Orchard" the tragic inconsistency of the main characters with the coming new time is shown with precise Chekhovian intonations. The production is decorated with excellent acting performances. The performance brought together a truly stellar cast: Marina Neelova, Sergei Garmash (Lopakhin), Igor Kvasha, Valentin Gaft (Firs), Elena Yakovleva (Varya).

The play “The Cherry Orchard” at the Sovremennik Theater remains one of the most popular productions and attracts metropolitan audiences with the wonderful direction of Galina Volchek and the excellent cast of performers.
