He created more than 400 works, invented a whole world populated by brave and noble heroes. His extravaganza story “Scarlet Sails” enjoys special popular love and popularity.

The year was 1916. A lanky man with a heavy gaze wandered through the streets of St. Petersburg. He stopped at one of the display cases and spent a long time looking at a toy boat with white silk sails. The ship was beautiful, light and swift, but something was missing from it. If only the sails were a different color. Which one? Perhaps scarlet, the color of love and hope! This is how “Scarlet Sails” first appeared in the imagination of the writer Alexander Green.

This extravaganza was finally created in the harsh and hungry December of 1920. An excerpt from the work was published in the Evening Telegraph newspaper six months later, and the entire “Scarlet Sails” was published as a separate publication in 1923. The writer dedicated the fairy tale to his second wife Nina, who is considered the prototype of Assol.

“Scarlet Sails” is a story about a dream come true. Since childhood, Assol believed that a prince would come for her on a white ship with scarlet sails. Arthur Gray dreamed of the sea and wanted to become a captain. Their wishes came true, life gave the heroes meeting and love. But how many beautiful pages, how many movements of the soul fit into this romantic story!

Green deliberately creates a contrast between the gray routine in a small fishing village and the rich inner world of the young heroine. Assol's dreams, her pure and beautiful soul arouse suspicion among ordinary people. They consider the girl weak-minded and mock her belief in miracles. These people are mired in everyday affairs, do not sing songs and do not tell tales. Their courtship of women is crude and primitive. The residents of Kaperna reject everything that does not fit into the usual framework, so the brave and fair Longren and his dreamer daughter become outcasts in the village.

The heroine’s childhood cannot be called cloudless. Having lost his mother at five months, Assol grows up in poverty. She has to manage the housework and help her father make toys. This is the only source of income for a small family. Assol has no friends, and her peers reward her with insults and ridicule. A wonderful dream of a ship with scarlet sails, given by an old storyteller, becomes a support for a lonely girl for many years.

The writer creates a portrait of Assol upon meeting Egle with large strokes: “print dress washed many times”, "dark thick hair", "skinny, tanned legs". The description of the heroine when meeting Gray, when Assol was already seventeen years old, is not much different: a dress made of cheap muslin, an old headscarf, an expressive face, eyes too serious for her age. Green doesn't consider Assol a beauty, he calls her "living poem".

In the image of Longren, the writer embodied his ideas about an ideal father. He, in fact, devotes his entire life to his daughter. In order not to be separated from the baby, the sailor remains on shore and finds a way to earn money when he can often be at home. Longren teaches Assol to read and write, tells her about his travels, and takes care of her.

Arthur Gray is a dreamer and romantic. That’s why he understands Assol so well. The young man is not attracted to the wealthy life of an aristocrat. He does not want, like his parents, to become “an arrogant slave of his position.” Gray is inspired by the sea, freedom and the wind of travel. Arthur is not short of firmness and perseverance in achieving his goals; he is not afraid of difficulties. Nobility, generosity, sense of justice and leadership qualities attract people to him.

Arthur's mother allowed him a lot, but the boy did not grow up spoiled. Even as a child, Gray demonstrated kindness and empathy. Let us remember how he tested the pain from a burn on himself, covered the nails on a crucifix with paint and helped a poor dowry-less maid. Overcoming the elements and oneself became Arthur Gray's way of life. “He was born a captain, he wanted to be one and became one”.

The sail has always been considered a symbol of freedom, courage and hope, and Greene’s white ship under scarlet sails turned into the embodiment of love, happiness and joy. It is no coincidence that the name of the galliot is “Secret”. Not a secret, not a riddle, but a secret for two.

The language of the work is amazing. Green manages to find phrases that literally bloom on the pages of the story in a bright, incredibly fresh and imaginative pattern: "happy morning shine", "flaming blue distance", "golden star coal", "fiery needle of a distant planet", "a sea surrounded by a golden thread", "throwing away the fun", “happiness sat in her like a fluffy kitten”. The whole story is permeated with images that create a unique atmosphere from a mixture of imagination and reality. Here the old trees speak in a deep voice and “they creak kindred”, flowers have "special persons", and the day "full of inevitability".

In “Scarlet Sails” a miracle is quite real. To create it, Arthur Gray needed white paint, an orchestra of traveling musicians, a barrel of hundred-year-old wine and two thousand square meters of scarlet silk. But the crew of the Secret, the crew of the military cruiser, and the musicians of the orchestra all feel a sense of involvement in the fairy tale. A real miracle makes their eyes light up, their hearts open, and awakens the desire to do something equally unusual, kind, and bright. And then the cruiser salutes with all her guns, and the stern assistant captain Panten goes to make peace with the sailor.

The author called his work an extravaganza. This theatrical term refers to productions with a fairy-tale plot in lush scenery. Arthur Gray created an extravaganza for Assol, and Alexander Green for all grateful readers.

There are not many works in our literature that have such a strong influence on society and can compete in popularity with Scarlet Sails. A bright attitude, a surge of energy, pure impulses of the heart arise not only among young people, but also among mature people who meet for the first time or re-read Green’s extravaganza with pleasure.

“Scarlet Sails” is an amazing work that shapes the inner consciousness of people, making it more humane, open to new impressions and emotions. It is full of striking contrasts between the worldview of society and an individual person who was able to preserve in his soul what was long ago lost by others.

What is the story “Scarlet Sails” about?

The callous, spiritually poor inhabitants of a small seaside town are opposed by the girl Assol, who, due to life circumstances, has become an outcast of this society. Asol had no friends; she could only share her experiences, dreams and thoughts with her father.

It was the father who revealed all the mysterious mysteries of nature to the girl, talked about sea voyages, and the intricacies of human relationships. Assol absorbed what her father taught her and acquired her own worldview, which separated her even further from society.

But the negativity of society did not affect the girl, since she clearly understood that her own opinion was more important to her than the biased attitude of the “blind” crowd. Assol believed that one day the person who would completely understand her would come to her, and with him she would find true happiness.

One day, while walking, Assol met Egle, a famous storyteller and collector of legends. He told the girl that one morning a majestic ship with scarlet sails would enter the harbor. It will produce a handsome, brave prince, who is already looking for Assol and will take her with him to his kingdom, where they will live for a long time loving each other.

Assol sincerely believed Egl and began to wait for her prince. This became another reason for people to make fun of the girl. They teased her as a dreamer, did not take her words and gloated that the years went by, and Assol remained waiting for her fantastic prince.

But the girl, in spite of everything, believed that one day this would happen. And one day fate rewarded her for this: Egle’s prophecy came true, and she met her prince.

She met a young man who, having learned about her dream and how this dream was perceived in society, bought the most expensive scarlet sails for his ship. He left the ship to meet the girl, thus making her dreams come true.

Belief in beauty and the dream of happiness

The heroine Assol teaches us to believe in something that, at first glance, is absolutely impossible to achieve. After all, the power of human desire, supported by faith and hope, has no limits.

The main thing is to keep kindness and sincerity in your heart, which sooner or later will lead to the fulfillment of your dreams. “Scarlet Sails” should under no circumstances be perceived as a fairy tale, because a miracle can happen in the life of every person if he is open to it.

You should not be afraid to confront false and low social morals, but boldly go towards your dreams, despite difficulties and obstacles. But you should also remember about your loved ones, because each of us can fulfill their cherished dreams, the main thing is to just try to find out about them.

Justification for choosing the play

Greene should be read thoughtfully and meaningfully, otherwise the chest of secrets and mysteries will remain closed to the reader. Responding to the concerns of his contemporary, Greene also wrote for the future. The work I chose is one of the most important for a writer. The world of “scarlet sails” is bright, alluringly sparkling. Green uses a large number of colors to describe characters, nature and the world around him. Interest in color images, the purity of the main character, the flight of dreams and fantasies of this work influenced my choice.



Few writers actively work with color, multi-colored images, revealing the world of their heroes with their help. A. Green is exactly the person who skillfully, without fear of overdoing it, uses colors in all his works. There are quite a lot of studies devoted to the work of this author and specifically his story “Scarlet Sails” - E. Aleksanyan, E. Pestryaev, V. Amlinsky. In the literature there are quite a lot of analytical comments about the work of A.S. Green by famous, talented Russian writers - K.G. Paustovsky, V. Kataev, Y. Kazakov, E. Bagritsky and others. These works talk about the genre features of the story, the romantic basis of A. Green’s works, and the artistic means of embodying the author’s idea. The use of color images - very little attention has been paid to this issue; unfortunately, this topic has not been systematically studied. From this, we can conclude that this kind of topic has been little studied and is eagerly awaiting its researchers. We have known about color symbolism for a long time that color, multi-colored images can become a bright artistic means of embodying an author’s idea. The works of art historians - Yu. Menner, literary critics - Yu. Lotman, B. Uspensky, psychologists - L. Vygotsky, etc. are devoted to this.

The brightness of the images, the variety of colors, the pure idea and sincere dream of the story pushed me towards choosing this story-fiery

Plot retelling of the play

Longren is a man who has closed himself off and has no desire to make contact with people. He lived by making and selling models of sailing ships and steamships. Fellow countrymen were wary of the former sailor, especially after one incident.



One day, during a raging storm, the shopkeeper and innkeeper Menners was carried away in his boat far out to sea. The father of the main character turned out to be one and only witness to the accident. He stood calmly and smoked his pipe, watching as Menners vainly cried out to him for help. Only when it became obvious that he could no longer be saved, Longren shouted to him that in the same way his Mary asked a fellow villager for help, but did not receive it, as a result of which she died.

The shopkeeper, a little less than a week later, was picked up among the waves by a steamer, and before his death he told the story of the culprit of his tragedy.

The only thing he didn’t talk about was how five and a half years ago Longren’s wife asked him to borrow some money. After all, she had just given birth to baby Assol, the birth was quite difficult, and a large amount of money was spent on treatment, and at that time her husband had not returned from the sea voyage. Menners then advised not to be hard to touch, and only on such conditions was he ready to help. Of course, she did not agree and the exhausted woman went to the city in rainy weather to pawn the ring. After such a hike, she caught a cold and died of pneumonia. So Longren remained a widower with a baby in his arms and could no longer afford to go to sea.

The news of such a demonstrably inactive Longren struck the villagers more than if he had drowned a man with his own hands. The attitude of the residents turned into hatred and also transferred to the innocent Assol, who grew up alone with her fantasies and dreams. And it seemed as if she didn’t need either peers or friends. Her father replaced everything and everyone for her: her mother, her friends and her fellow countrymen.

Some time later, when Assol grew up, her father sent her to the city with new products for sale, among which was a miniature yacht with scarlet silk sails. She got bored and on the way through the forest she decided to play with the boat and lowered it into the stream. The stream carried him and carried the girl with it. And then, the girl saw the toy in the hands of a stranger, his name was Egle, a collector of legends and fairy tales. He gave the toy to Assol and told the secret that years would pass and a prince would sail for her on the same ship under scarlet sails and take her to beautiful distances.

To celebrate, she told her father about this, but the beggar insidiously overheard this conversation and spread this tender secret throughout Caperna. And every child in the village tried to offend her with more and more offensive words. From that moment on, she was considered crazy

Arthur Gray, the king's only son. He grew up in wealth and did not need anything. But he was a guy with a bright soul and a kind, real heart. He took his desires seriously and with the intention of making them come true. He grew up a fearless and determined guy.

Arthur was responsive to other people and was always willing to provide his selfless help.

Gray secretly left home from everyone and joined the schooner Anselm. Captain Gop was a good-natured man, but a strict sailor. He, as an intelligent person, immediately appreciated the merits of the young guy and Gop decided to make him captain. At the age of twenty, Gray bought his own three-masted galliot, the Secret, and sailed on it for four years. Fate brought him to a neighboring village not far from Kaperna.

Arriving on earth, Arthur and his sailor Letika decided to go fishing. As soon as they found a suitable place for fishing, they immediately stopped and lit a fire. In the morning, Gray decided to take a walk and saw Assol sleeping on the grass. He was stunned by her beauty. He looked at her for a long time, and when he decided to leave, he took his ring off his finger and put it on her little finger.

Then he and Letika got to Menners's tavern, where young Hin Menners was now in charge. He said that Assol is crazy, dreaming of a prince on a ship with scarlet sails. He said that her father was the culprit in the death of the elder Menners and a terrible person who raised such a child. Arthur did not believe the first person he met and doubted the innkeeper’s words. Doubts intensified when a drunken visitor assured that the narrator was lying. Gray, even without outside help, was able to understand and discern something in this extraordinary girl. She seemed to know more than others. She made discoveries that were incomprehensible and unnecessary to the residents of Kaperna. Nobody understood her. Her pure imagination and wonderful heart.

The captain was in many ways the same himself, a little out of this world. He went in search of scarlet silk for the sails of his ship. He decided to make dear Assol's fairy tale come true. In the city he met his old acquaintance, the traveling musician Zimmer, and out of old friendship asked him to come to the “Secret” with his orchestra in the evening.

The scarlet silk sails that Gray ordered to be replaced surprised the crew, as did the order to advance to Caperna. Under clear guidance, in the morning, the “Secret” set out under silken sails and, closer to lunchtime, was already in sight of Kaperna.

Assol was joyfully surprised that at first she doubted what she saw. The sight of a white ship with scarlet sails, from the deck of which music flowed, was unique and magical. She ran towards the ship. The residents of Kaperna parted to make way for Assol. A boat departed from the ship in which her dream was, where Arthur was. After a short time, she was already on the ship itself, and she was already looking at the villagers from the sea. People no longer had words or gossip. There was nothing bright and honest. And Assol, with happiness inside, illuminating everything around, set off into the brilliant distances. And everything happened exactly as the old man talked about and at which the whole village laughed so badly.

On the same day, on Gray's orders, a barrel of hundred-year-old wine was opened, the same one that no one had ever drunk before. And in the morning the ship was already far from Kaperna, carrying away the crew, stunned by Gray’s wonderful wine. Only Zimmer kept his eyes open. He played his cello quietly and thought about happiness.

Composition of the play

The performance is an artistic whole. However, its integrity clearly contains parts, certain pieces. Disconnection can be noticed when watching even the most ideal performance, and this happens because the performance is analyzed and digested in parts, the pieces of the whole are glued together gradually. This process is called construction, or more precisely the composition of the performance.

The composition of the performance depends on the structure of the play. It is important for the director to find his own solution, to give his own interpretation in creating the artistic and aesthetic integrity of the performance. The director's vision must be embodied in the composition of the performance. Often, a performance becomes valuable in itself thanks to the director’s concept, which does not depend on the composition of the play, by identifying new accents in the content of the play and new semantic interpretations of it.

Linear- composition. This can be said to be the most common type of composition. It is characterized by the fact that in it the parts of the composition follow sequentially, one after another. The play “Scarlet Sails” has a linear composition.

The principle of mise-en-scene

Mise-en-scène (from the French mise en scène - placement on stage) is one of the main visual means of creating theater, part of the director's plan, which is the arrangement of actors on stage at a specific moment in the performance or in the production in general.

Mise-en-scène, speaking in the language of cinema, is how the viewer sees the frame (scene) or from the viewer’s side. In the theatre, scenes should be properly arranged so that everyone from their seat can see a certain composition of actors and scenery. Mise-en-scène includes all the actors’ actions on stage, their exits from behind the scenes, transitions, changes of places, as well as interaction with the audience.

Mise-en-scene is inseparable from direction and set design. The nature of its construction embodies the genre and style of the performance. It creates a certain plastic form of production and therefore, in its creation with the actors, both the director and the designer of the performance (in cinema - the cameraman), and sometimes the choreographer, and sometimes the choreographer, participate, for example, as in the Theater of Nations performance “Shakespeare’s Sonnets”.

Each mise-en-scène in a modern theater must be psychologically justified by the actors and arise naturally, naturally and organically. The mise-en-scene sometimes becomes more important than the actors themselves, since modern theater strives for visuality and entertainment.

It is this atmosphere that gives inspiration and strength for the future. In a good atmosphere, which is filled with the right energy, the actor feels as needed for the role. It is filled not only internally, but also the external atmosphere supports its image. The state of anger or joy, sadness or happiness: all this is read, one might say, by the skin. The viewer feels it just like the actor himself. Therefore, the atmosphere of the performance also plays a big role and it needs to be created no less insinuatingly.

The actors feel like artists, even when the auditorium is empty and silence has engulfed the night stage.
And not only the theater, but also the concert hall, the circus, the booth, and the fair are filled with a magical atmosphere. All elements are very important; they influence our sensitivity and create for us this or that image, an atmosphere in which the viewer or participant feels the way the director planned. Receives one or another emotion that was intended by the creator. It excites both the actor and the viewer equally. Don’t the public, especially the young, often go to the theater just to be in this atmosphere of unreality or a forgotten era of another time.

The concept of atmosphere came to the theater from life. We can often come across this word and concept anywhere, at home in the family, at work and even in line; we sometimes feel the tense state of people without words. And in life it accompanies us every minute, at every step.

The atmosphere is an all too human phenomenon, because at its center there is a person who is partially peering into the world, acting, thinking, feeling, searching. A complex synthesis of relationships with the real world around us. The world of our thoughts, emotions, wants, moods, dreams, fantasies, without which our existence is impossible, this is what we call the atmosphere of life. Without it, our life would remind us of a robotic machine through which red blood does not flow, facial expressions do not move, eyes do not glow and eyebrows do not frown.

Every person's life has its own atmosphere. It is changing, there is a struggle between different values. This is normal: in everyone’s life there is a “struggle of atmospheres”, different people carry different atmospheres, our personal can be subordinated to the public, etc.

The atmosphere in the play “Scarlet Sails” is a clean, lively, real atmosphere, unsullied, no matter how hard those around you try, with dirt and despair. A sparkling dream reigns, devotion to fantasy, the flight of a magical dream, but not an easy dream, and where the characters overcome difficulties on the way to their cherished goal.

Tempo of the performance

Tempo is the degree of speed of an action performed. We can act slowly, measuredly, quickly, etc., which will require different amounts of energy from us, but will not necessarily have a significant impact on our internal state. Thus, the young director, wanting to raise the tone of the performance, asks the actors to act faster, but only external, physical acceleration does not yet give rise to internal activity.

Another thing is the rhythm of internal action and behavior. If it is said, for example, that “the performance is not going in the right rhythm,” then this means not just speed, but the intensity of the actions and experiences of the actors, that is, the internal emotional intensity in which stage events take place. In addition, the concept of “rhythm” also includes rhythm, that is, one or another dimension of action, its organization in time and space.

Thus, the term “rhythm” means both the intensity and regularity of the action performed. With the same fast pace, actions can be completely different in character and, therefore, have different rhythms.

Rhythm and tempo are inseparable from each other, since they characterize one unit of action taken over one elemental unit of stage time. Rhythm determines the tempo, but changes in tempo (while maintaining the structure of the rhythmic unit) entail changes in the nature of the rhythm. Therefore, both phenomena practically exist simultaneously, constituting together a single concept of tempo-rhythm.

The development of the tempo-rhythm of a performance is a wave-like process, where rises and falls are the sum of the tempo-rhythms of actions, episodes, and scenes. In general, the tempo-rhythm of the performance is an indicator of the intensity of its end-to-end action. K.S. Stanislavsky stated: “The tempo-rhythm of the entire play is the tempo-rhythm of its through action and subtext.”

Planar scenic decorations require general uniform lighting, which is created by general lighting devices (spotlights, ramps, portable devices). Performances that feature voluminous scenery require local (spotlight) lighting, which creates light contrasts that emphasize the volume of the design.

Theater light - This is the art of illuminating the theatrical space: the space where the audience arrives and where the theatrical action takes place. The task of lighting the auditorium, not so related to directing, is usually part of the architectural project.

Light is varied in its use, so you need to see not only where the light should be, but also how it should illuminate a particular scene, surface, action, a specific character or a certain element.

In the play based on A. Green’s story “Scarlet Sails,” the atmosphere of a fabulous, non-existent place is created with the help of light.
