If you dream of loved ones who have passed away, you really need to pray for them, both in church and at home. “God is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for with Him all are alive” (Luke 20:38). Actually, we must constantly pray for deceased loved ones dear to our hearts - both they and we ourselves need this prayer.

How to do this, and what is Sorokoust?

It is very important in our prayer for the dead to commemorate them during the Divine Liturgy - the main service that takes place in the church: “... great benefit will be for the souls for whom prayer is offered at the time when the Holy and Terrible Sacrifice is offered” (St. Cyril of Jerusalem).

How does this happen? During the Proskomedia in the altar, the priest removes particles from the prosphora for the repose, memory and remission of the sins of people who have passed on to another world, and at the end of the Liturgy, the removed particles are lowered into the Chalice with a prayer to Christ that He would wash away with His Blood the sins of all who were remembered. Archbishop John of Shanghai (Maksimovich) spoke about it this way: “Anyone who wants to show their love for the dead and give them real help can best do this by praying for them and, in particular, by commemorating them at the Divine Liturgy, when the particles taken for the living and the dead , are immersed in the Blood of the Lord with the words: “Wash away, Lord, the sins of those who were remembered here with His honest Blood, with the prayers of His saints.” We cannot do anything better or more for them. They always need this. »

Before the start of the Divine Liturgy, submit a note in memory of your friend and other deceased loved ones so that they are remembered at Proskomedia (this can be done on the weekday when the Liturgy is celebrated in the church, on Sundays or the night before). Any minister or one of the parishioners will explain to you how to submit such a note. On a special piece of paper with an image of an eight-pointed cross, you write the words “On the repose of...” and in the genitive case you list the names of those commemorated that were given to them at Baptism: “Servant of God Sergius, R.B. Tatiana, R.B. Alexia…". Usually, these notes are received by the ministers in the “candle box” - that is, in a kiosk in the western part of the temple, where candles are taken, and then leaves with names are passed to the altar to the priest who leads the service.

Sorokoust, dear Yuri, is the commemoration of an Orthodox Christian at the Divine Liturgy for 40 days in a row. You can order Sorokoust in the same way as a one-time commemoration. When you order the celebration of the magpie or a one-time commemoration during the Liturgy, you make a monetary donation accepted in the given church or monastery, usually a very small one. Sorokoust must also be served for the soul of a just deceased Christian.

How else can we pray for our deceased loved ones?

You can ask the priest to perform a funeral litia or memorial service in a temple, at home or in a cemetery (how to do this, also find out from the temple servants or the priest himself). In addition to private commemorations of the deceased, throughout the year there are also days of special general commemoration of the deceased, called parental Saturdays. On these days, all Christians who have died since the ages are remembered.

Another form of commemoration in church life is considered to be the distribution of alms, performed in memory and remission of the sins of the deceased: “Alms and help to those in need bring one out of the depths of hell, saving the soul and the one who gives this alms.”

And finally, you yourself can pray for your deceased friend in church and at home.

Each church has a so-called “eve”, “eve” or “eve”, this is a special table with a row of candlesticks and a Crucifix, at which funeral services are usually served. Prayer, no matter how short or lengthy it may be, remains a prayer, and the Lord accepts it, knowing both the strength and circumstances of the one praying. Saint John of Damascus says that everyone who prays, works and prays for the salvation of another, benefits himself first of all.

The meaning of the 17th Kathisma

During the entire forty days after the death of a person, his family and friends must read the Psalter. How many kathismas per day depends on the time and energy of the readers, but reading must certainly be daily. When the entire Psalter has been read, it is read first. Just don’t forget that after every “Glory. “You need to read a prayer request for the remembrance of the deceased (from “Following the departure of the soul from the body”). Many relatives and friends of the deceased, citing the fact that they do not have time or do not have the Psalter, or do not know how to read in Church Slavonic, entrust this reading to others (readers) for a fee or other remuneration. But the prayer will be stronger, sincere, purer if a relative or close person to the deceased himself asks God for mercy on the deceased.

On the third, ninth, and fortieth days one should read the 17th kathisma according to the deceased.

This kathisma depicts the bliss of those who walked in the law of the Lord, i.e. the bliss of righteous people who tried to live according to the commandments of God.

The meaning and meaning of Psalm 118 are revealed in verse 19: “I am a stranger (stranger) on earth: hide not Thy commandments from me.” Explanatory Bible ed. A.P. Of the entire Psalter, at first glance - primarily due to its large volume - Psalm 118 is perceived in a special way: why is this text read - extensive, monotonous and difficult for the modern reader?

The most general answer is for the most valuable Christian moral lesson, which St. Augustine himself deeply appreciated.

Comparing this song with other psalm chapters, he called those stars scattered across the sky, and this one the midday sun. It is no coincidence that these are the words used to remember the souls of loved ones who have left this world.

How to spend 40 days after the death of a relative

Orthodox believe that on the fortieth day the soul of the deceased visits loved ones for the last time before appearing before God's judgment. She needs encouragement and guidance - there is still time for enlightenment and transformation to eternal life.

This is helped by the church memorial service, in the fifth tone of which the refrain is the twelfth verse of Psalm 118: “Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your commandments.”

All loved ones of the deceased are supposed to do good deeds to save the deceased (donating lean products to the temple, buying a candle, giving alms to a beggar).

It is allowed to gather at the funeral table, remembering the deceased, but this action is necessary specifically for those who remained, and not for the one whose soul has already left the body. Alcohol will weaken the spiritual connection of those present with the traveling soul - it is not needed at the wake.

It is good to pray together and have conversations that encourage reflection on the meaning of life and death. The clergy especially recommend reading Kathisma 17, which fully includes Psalm 118.

The meaning of the 17th kathisma from the Psalter

The lengthy song is dedicated to a Christian’s understanding of the enormous significance of God for him. The lyrical hero shares the gracious and intimate response of his soul to the Law of the Lord - that is why this is not only a deeply personal prayer, but also pure beautiful poetry.

Almost every verse contains a new epithet for God's word: behavior, judgment, command, testimony, statutes, revelations, path, decree, law. It awakens in the soul of the singer a wealth of feelings and experiences: joy, love, worship, thirst, zealous desire for truth and goodness, frankness, anxious feelings about one’s own dignity before the Creator and at the same time the boldness to ask him for protection and enlightenment.

The most common word here is “I”: this is the revelation of a heart touched by the Divine and convinced of the great goodness of the order He creates. The interpretation of kathisma recreates the true spiritual practice of a Christian. And for whom is it more important to touch it, if not for the soul that is about to appear before the Heavenly Father?

Text of Kathisma 17 from the Psalter, read for the departed

To the Russian reader, the text seems compositionally incoherent, because it is a translation from the ancient language of the Semitic group. The work was intended as an acrostic poem.

In the original, every eighth line of the 22 sections consistently began with a letter of the Hebrew alphabet. This idea is not accidental: after all, human language is perhaps the most suitable and comprehensive metaphor for the subject of the work.

How to read the 17th Kathisma correctly

It is better to get a blessing from a clergyman. It is better to speak the text out loud quietly. It is allowed to sit during performance.

First, the prayers laid before the beginning of the reading of the Psalter are read.

The kathisma itself is divided into three parts - status or glory: this is the moment of glorification of the Holy Trinity at the Liturgy.

Verses 1, 2,12, 22, 25, 29, 37, 58, 66, 72, 73 and 88 are read with chorus about the repose of the soul: “Rest, O Lord, the soul of your departed servant(s).”

Lines 92 and 93 are repeated three times - and again the funeral chorus.

The same chorus accompanies lines 94, 107, 114, 121, 131, 132, 133, 142, 153, 159, 163 and 170 (the chorus should be read after each line). The last two 175 and 176 are again performed three times and again the chorus is for the deceased slave.

At the end, the established prayers are heard - “according to the XVII kathisma.”

All of them are available in the prayer book, which should be purchased at the church store of an Orthodox church or monastery.

Days of special remembrance of the dead in Orthodoxy

In addition to the Akathist about the repose of all the departed, the psalm “Immaculate” is a universal text for all memorial days, including parental Saturdays. There are nine of these in Orthodoxy. They are designated by the name of the people closest to each person - parents.

These ones days when you should remember the dead, order services (in advance, preferably in the evening, especially if you cannot attend the funeral service), and pray at home:

  • Ecumenical: Trinity (before the Holy Trinity) and Meat Eating (a week before Lent);
  • on the pre-Easter Pentecost: sixth day of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th weeks;
  • private: nine days after Easter Sunday - Radunitsa;
  • Day of Remembrance of Orthodox Soldiers - September 11;
  • Demetrius Saturday before the eighth of November - the day of remembrance of the Great Martyr Dmitry of Thessalonica;
  • Commemoration of those killed in the Great Patriotic War on the day of the Great Victory.

It is very convenient to purchase an Orthodox calendar for the coming year; all fasts, days of remembrance of the dead, all holidays and much more are indicated there.

Conclusion

This part of the Psalter is capable of giving the thoughtful reader a truly inexhaustible spiritual experience. It is not without reason that many clergy and spiritual leaders of Christianity recommended reading the seventeenth kathisma daily.

Weekly memorial reading of the Psalms.
The funeral reading of the Psalter is a prayer for the soul of the deceased and comforts the hearts of grieving relatives and friends. This custom is very ancient and dates back to the first centuries of Christianity. Anyone who wishes, at a time convenient for him, can join our reading of the Psalms, remember in prayer the name of his son or daughter and the names of other children who died early. This is a home prayer, so you can remember all children, regardless of whether they were baptized or unbaptized (even if the child was not given a name, you can remember him simply as a baby).

Explanation of the Holy Book of Psalms. Archpriest Grigory Ivanovich Razumovsky. Kathisma 17.

This Psalm 118 is the greatest of all psalms; it is inscribed, like many of the previous psalms, with the word Alleluia. Its distinctive feature is that it is written (in the Hebrew original) in the alphabetical order of the letters of the Hebrew language, which is why it is divided into 22 parts, each with 8 verses beginning with one letter; Each of the 22 parts contains a special subject for didactic instruction. In general, this is a song in praise of the law of God, or, more precisely, the prayer of one pious Israeli for the deliverance, amid oppression and persecution, of the true admirers of the law of God from the wicked and treacherous violators of it, especially from the pagan government hostile to the true religion. The expression of the desire for a living and active knowledge of the law of God that runs through the entire psalm, the glorification of its perfections and the importance of its preservation, which constitute the essential content of the psalm - all this gives grounds for recognizing the origin of this psalm in the time of the post-exilic state of the Jews, under Ezra and Nehemiah.
Before starting to explain this psalm, I had the opportunity to see the book “Psalm one hundred and eighteenth, interpreted by Bishop Theophan,” 2nd edition of the Athos Russian Panteleimon Monastery. Having familiarized myself in some detail with this large book, I saw that it contained such a rich treasure of spiritual wisdom that I would not have been able to exhaust in all the other days and years of my life; and therefore I decided, without stopping my work - the psalm explanation, to extract and present for the general benefit at least small grains from the great treasury of St. Theophan. In view of this, I considered it necessary to title this psalm here in the form in which it exists. And from this very line I will speak not my own and not from other sources, but only what the above-mentioned book of Bishop Theophan says. On page 7 of the preface of this book it is said: “In offering our thoughts, we consider it our duty to declare that there will be little of our own here. Everything will be borrowed from St. fathers and teachers of the Church who labored in the interpretation of this psalm. In the presentation we will keep the division into osmisms. Each misconception is driven by one thought, on which the poems are strung, like beads on one thread. Interpretation and reflection itself will show how true this is. What is the general form of the sayings in this psalm? These are not parables, but prayers to God. Each verse is a prayer, but everything is about one thing - about fulfilling the law of the Lord. The soul, realizing that salvation is only in God, through the fulfillment of His holy will, talks with God, begging Him to enlighten, admonish, strengthen, deliver from internal temptations and external troubles, restore from falls, deliver from enemies, in a word - to grant it, His mercy, to be pleasing to Him. Psalm 118 (Immaculate)

Blameless - this is the 17th kathisma of the psalter, psalm 118. Usually this psalm is considered primarily a funeral psalm. This view of him is wrong, incorrect. The church charter considers immaculate - this majestic biblical song in honor of the law that saves a person in life and after death - as a solemn, festive kathisma, mainly Sunday.
As a solemn Sunday kathisma, the immaculate ones are also included in the funeral service, when commemorating those who have died in the hope of RESURRECTION AND LIFE, and as if in confirmation of this hope and as a consolation to those grieving about separation, which should end in resurrection. And the very content of Psalm 118 does not remind us of death, but turns our thoughts to life. There is no mention of the horrors of death in it. On the contrary, it contains multiple requests: live me, grant me life, supported by the confession that even now the Lord through His word revives me, and therefore turning into the firm confidence that I am everyone faithful to the law - I'll be alive, I'll be alive for eternity, my soul will live.
People soon get used to something that is repeated often and monotonously, and it no longer makes the same impression on them as it did the first time or when it is done rarely. Therefore, the Church Charter, so often introducing immaculate prayers into the liturgy and prescribing the usual recitative reading for their everyday use, in other cases very, very diversifies the methods of their implementation.

Blameless at funeral services

The same 17th kathisma is recited in all cases at funeral matins, at all rites of burial, except for an infant, and at a memorial service. But how varied is its execution in all these cases and how different it is from Sunday and Great Saturday!..
Immaculate is a song about the law, this is a confession of a soul admiring God's law, grieving over its deviations from it, begging the Lord to be merciful. At Sunday Matins this is a confession on behalf of all those present, therefore it is sung all in a row, without any choruses. At funeral services, this is a confession on behalf of the deceased. But the living ones who are present, not wanting to remain only listeners and witnesses of this confession, interrupt it with frequent appeals to the Lord both on their own and on behalf of the entire Church, and according to the different purposes of the various funeral sequences, each has special choruses, a special way of performing them.
It was said that the Church does not condemn crying at the grave and during the remembrance of the dead. You can cry, but you should not be in a TEARY, relaxed, nervous mood. A Christian remains cheerful even in sorrow. Creating and maintaining just such a cheerful mood is what our Orthodox worship in general, and funeral services in particular, mean. The choice of the 17th kathisma for funeral services is explained precisely by this intention of the Church. The 17th kathisma, as we have seen, is not at all specifically funeral. On the contrary, it is more Sunday; Only the way it is performed and the additions made to it differs at funeral services from its use on Sundays.

Blameless at the funeral service

The memorial service is even more intimate and exclusively a funeral service - not like Matins. In accordance with this, the blameless ones at the funeral service take on a different shade. The voice for them remains the same 2nd, but the choruses are exclusively funereal: Remember, Lord... Rest, O Lord, the souls of Your servant. When commemorating the dead at public worship, the thoughts of believers should be directed mainly to the fact that death for the servants of God and their friends is not so much sorrow as joy, and therefore, first of all, praise to God: Blessed be you Lord. By this, the intimate feeling of grief seems to be somewhat removed and, in any case, restrained. At a memorial service, a service of a private nature, where the commemoration is carried out mainly of close relatives, personal friends and known pilgrims present, greater scope is given to the natural feeling of grief over separation from dear and loved ones, some of whom, perhaps, have recently left their beloved brethren. Therefore, here on the blameless there is no longer a refrain of praise, not a general request for salvation, but a prayerful appeal, not only turning the thoughts of those praying directly to the departed, but by repeated repetition, as if trying to hold attention to the memory of the departed, as if to nail it to these memories, and dear and sorrowful, causing tears. Here love seems to find no boundaries, and without number and without measure, with a voice full of tender, kindred feeling, it cries out tirelessly: Remember, Lord... Rest, O Lord, the souls of Your servant, our dear departed.
So the Holy Church does not suppress the natural feeling for Christians of love for loved ones and grief when separated from them. She only tries to show him his place, to bring him within the proper boundaries, so that everything will happen in its own time.

Psalm 118

1. Blessed are the blameless ones who walk in the law of the Lord.

1. The interpretation of Holy Scripture is an unusually difficult task. There is nothing to do here without knowledge of Hebrew and Ancient Greek. Those who try to interpret sacred texts, having before them only Russian and Church Slavonic translations, inevitably find themselves in a difficult situation. I myself understood these words in this sense: you can teach by punishment, or you can teach by justification (pardon), and a person, remembering this, will not repeat his sin. However, their meaning is different.
The Slavic translation of the Bible was made from a Greek translation called the translation of 70 interpreters or the Septuagint. The word “justification” is a translation of the Greek “dikaioma”, which means law, an institution about the means given for the justification and purification of a person. The Greek learned monk Euthymius Zigabenus (12th century) interprets this verse as follows: “David glorifies God, praising him for the benefit he received from His Law. Moreover, he asks to learn him even more and to acquire an even truer and higher understanding of his commandments.” It’s easier to say: teach me Your Law (“ta dikaiomata”).

For a modern person who is not familiar with the Church Slavonic language, it is strange to hear the expressions of this psalm: “I will mock at Your Commandments and understand Your ways”, “Teach me understanding and I will mock at Your wonders”, “I lifted up my hands to Your Commandments and mocked in Your justifications."
Word sneer in its positive meaning there is a kind of “abbreviation” for the phrase “I will carefully delve deeper” - I will constantly, continuously and in detail reflect in order to find out the subject of reflection more precisely (in the case of Psalm 118, such a subject is the Commandments of God).
However, “reflections are different from thoughts” and depend on the essence of the personality of the reflector himself. And so the verb sneer in the Church Slavonic language it has another, negative meaning - to mock, to mock everything. By the way, in this sense the word mockery We also find in Psalm 119, in verse 85 - “The transgressors told me mockery, but not Your Law.” Here's the word mockery means verbosity (the verbosity of the unrighteous).
In addition, in Church Slavonic the word mockery It also means sadness, sadness (see First Book of Samuel, chapter I, verse 16, Psalm 34, verse 3).
Word I sneer, in addition, in the Church Slavonic language it means - I chuckle, I judge; I wander, I wander idly...
It is interesting to pay attention to this due to the fact that in modern Russian the verb sneer retained only its negative meaning.
