From February 24 to March 31, the State Tretyakov Gallery will host a lecture and art program "Bible stories in fine arts" (subscription No. 39, 14+).

The five topics of this lecture series sequentially tell about the structure of the Bible, about the plots of the Old and New Testaments, read and creatively rethought by artists different countries and epochs. This makes it possible not only to remember and learn the main biblical themes, but also to immerse yourself in the experience of great stories, to make the events of the Holy History close and understandable to any person - after all, this is how a variety of masters approached these topics, for many of whom the reflection of the biblical text became a matter of life.

Lecturer: Vera Vsevolodovna Donets - senior researcher at the Tretyakov Gallery, art critic, lecturer, author of a number of monographs and articles on the history of Russian fine art.

The first topic of the lecture cycle introduces the centuries-old tradition of reflecting biblical scenes in the visual arts - from the early Christian era to the present day. It will briefly review the structure and sequence of biblical texts, explain the content and theological significance of the books of the Old and New Testaments. Listeners will see the works of outstanding masters, telling about the mysterious greatness of the first days of the creation of the world, about the creation of man and his fall into sin, about the subsequent events of the Old Testament history.

The lecture will feature works by famous painters - Michelangelo Buonarroti, Masaccio, Lucas Cranach, Pieter Brueghel, as well as icon painters - Andrei Rublev and others.

The second lecture of the cycle is devoted to one of the brightest and most sublime topics in the history of art - images. of the Blessed Virgin, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven. The New Testament does not tell much about the events of the life of the Virgin Mary, although we see Her image in the most important plots dedicated to the earthly life of Christ, up to the Crucifixion, Resurrection and Ascension. What was not included in the gospel texts - the story of the Nativity and childhood of the Virgin Mary, the Assumption of the Virgin and subsequent miracles - turned out to be in the world artistic tradition thanks to additional sources recognized by the Church (apocrypha). This, as well as such concepts as the canon and iconography, will be discussed at the lecture, where icon-painting images, frescoes by Giotto, paintings by Raphael, Robert Campin and other artists will be shown.

The theme of the lecture reflects the basis of the gospel stories - this is the earthly path of the Savior from His Nativity in the Bethlehem cave to the Crucifixion, Resurrection and Ascension. The four canonical books of the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, John and Luke have inspired artists for centuries to create masterpieces full of a lively sense of faith and deep reflection. Works of art not only illustrated gospel events, they carried the spirit of the time in which they were created. It is no coincidence that the heroes of biblical stories are so similar to the contemporaries of this or that artist. great events Christian history remained relevant throughout the history of art. This will be shown by the works of Duccio, P. Brueghel, Rembrandt, A. Ivanov, I. Repin, V. Polenov and many others.

The theme of the sacrificial suffering of the Savior in a series of biblical stories is the only one where events can be traced literally by days and hours. Each of the days of Holy Week, the last before Easter, gets its own name, its own iconography.

Many artists turned to the theme of the Passion (suffering) of the Lord as the most important in their work. It was in these events that they found ideas and feelings close to the soul of every person - readiness for sacrificial love, humility and fortitude, the height of faith and opposition to evil. One of those masters for whom the Passion Cycle became central in his work was N.N. Ge; his work is given special attention in the lecture. In addition, works by Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Pieter Brueghel, Byzantine and Russian icons will be shown.

The greatest event in biblical history - the salvation of the human race - will begin for the listeners of the lecture cycle from the same moment that is described by the evangelists: at dawn sunday the myrrh-bearing women go to the cave where the body of Christ was left. There they see a stone rolled away from the entrance and an angel proclaiming the news of the Resurrection. The tradition of depicting the greatest plot in Christianity in Western and Eastern (Byzantine-Russian) iconography differs markedly, which will be discussed in the lecture.

In addition, pictures will be shown that tell about further developments- meetings of the resurrected Christ with the disciples, the famous "Assurance of Thomas", the Ascension of the Lord on the Mount of Olives. In addition to icon-painting works, medieval miniatures, engravings by A. Durer, paintings by H. Memling, A. Ivanov, N. Ge, V. Polenov will be presented.

The New Testament includes not only the four Gospels, but also the apostolic books - the Acts and Epistles of the Apostles. They tell about further events, preaching works and miracles of the disciples of Christ that followed the day of Pentecost, the Descent of the Holy Spirit. On that day they became apostles - the messengers of Christ, carrying His teaching throughout the world.

Vivid and exciting events from the acts of the apostles will be presented by the works of Masaccio, Caravaggio, Raphael, icon-painting works. The end of the lecture cycle will be the mysterious images of the Apocalypse - prophetic visions Apostle John the Theologian, who, by the will of God, saw the terrible and solemn pictures of the end of earthly times, doomsday and the greatness of the Kingdom of Heaven, to which "there shall be no end."

The program will help you understand domestic art. The course consists of three parts: Art XI–First half of XIX century, the second half of the XIX-XX centuries and the XX century. Lecturers will tell you how some trends were born and others went into the past, they will introduce you to the main names of each direction and teach you to understand the pictures, and not just glide over them with your eyes. Lectures will be held October 1-April 22 on Sundays at 16:00.

If you draw and want to understand the theory or just get confused in all sorts of “-isms”, get a subscription to this course: after it everything will fall into place. You will understand the difference between the concepts of "style" and " artistic direction”, you will understand Baroque, Mannerism, Modernism, Cezannism and you will be able to get completely different impressions from going to the museum.
