Family holidays in Greece: how to choose a resort for a child? TOP-⑤ best resorts in Greece for families with children.

When planning your vacation with children, pay attention to Greece- a Mediterranean paradise, where the sun is always gentle, the sea is amazingly blue and the spirit of ancient times emanates. Greece has beautiful beaches, amazing nature, and a huge number of attractions. In Greece you can really relax and unwind your soul from the hustle and bustle of weekdays. The very atmosphere of this country contributes to this. Life here flows measuredly and smoothly, the residents are not in a hurry, they are friendly, smiling and very hospitable.
Holidays in Greece with children can be considered one of the most popular destinations among Europeans. It is no coincidence that many youth camps are located here, hosting schoolchildren during the summer holidays.

What is attractive about holidays in Greece with children?

— We combine business with pleasure. A trip to Greece can be not only a good vacation for your child, but also an educational adventure. After all, many children enthusiastically read the myths of Ancient Greece, imagining Olympus, where the ancient gods lived, or the labyrinth in which Theseus defeated the Minotaur. Imagine how happy it will be for them to see this with their own eyes! And for those children who have not previously shown an interest in reading and history, a trip to the ancient places of Greece can inspire them to do so.

— Responsiveness of the local population. The Greeks are very open people, easy to communicate, friendly, always helpful. In Greece, you don’t have to worry about getting lost - passers-by will definitely explain to you how to get there, or even guide you. You can even ask a local Greek where you can eat deliciously, and he will begin to list taverns and cafeterias for you, giving comments and advice along the way.

Since we are talking about food, it is necessary to note another significant advantage of holidaying with children in Greece - Greek cuisine. Greeks love to enjoy the gifts of life, one of which is tasty food. Greek products are distinguished by their quality, freshness, juiciness; they seem to absorb the rays of the sun, sea air, beauty and amazing atmosphere of this country. Greek cuisine is good because it is not only tasty, but also healthy: seafood, olive oil, an abundance of vegetables and fruits, a huge variety of cheeses, Greek honey.

I would like to say something about Greek honey separately. Honey in Greece is different from ours; it is produced mainly from the nectar of fruits and citrus trees and has a mild, pleasant taste. Be sure to try Greek honey and don’t forget to bring it as a souvenir and treat it to your family!

Disadvantages of holidays in Greece with children

— Strikes are a national Greek pastime. Recently, the word crisis has also been associated with Greece. I would like to say right away that the crisis has not affected the tourism sector in any way; on the contrary, in order to attract more tourists, Greek hotels are doing their best to improve the quality of service and provide various discounts. And this, of course, is a plus.

However, Greek strikes, although safe, can significantly spoil your mood if you do not carefully plan your holiday. For example, it may happen that on the day you and your child arrive in Greece, taxi drivers will go on strike. Therefore, you need to take care in advance about alternative ways to get to your destination - find out which buses run from the airport, order an individual transfer, and so on.

— High prices and occupancy of hotels during peak season. If you are planning your trip to Greece for the summer, you need to book a hotel room in advance, as hotels are full at this time due to the large influx of tourists. Prices on islands that are popular with tourists are also very high. Therefore, if your budget is somewhat limited, we can advise you to choose lesser-known destinations for a holiday in Greece with children.

Greece: where to go with a child?

In order to choose a place to relax with children, you need to take into account many options - weather conditions, the quality of beaches, water, food, hotels, and so on. Therefore, we will try to choose several of the most suitable places, taking into account the weather, prices and historical monuments.

If we talk about mainland Greece, pay attention to Halkidiki. This is the north of Greece, south of Thessaloniki, because the climate here is milder, there is no intense heat even in July-August, when in the rest of Greece the thermometer goes off scale. You can come here from May until September. The weather in Halkidiki pleases vacationers with its stability, and the attractions with their abundance and diversity.
If you visit Greece in other months (for example, during school holidays), then you can choose the capital - Athens.

For a holiday in Greece with children, it is better to choose these islands, such as Crete, Rhodes, Corfu, Kos and the islands of Zakynthos, Alonissos, Chios, Samos, less known among Russian tourists (separate articles are being prepared about the islands).
Some islands of Greece are focused on specific goals: for example, the island of Santorini is chosen by many as a destination for weddings and honeymoons, the island of Mykonos is chosen by lovers of nightlife and parties.

Greece - how to get there

There are regular flights to mainland Greece to Athens and Thessaloniki, and depending on the season there are flights to Kalamata (the very south of the Peloponnese)
There are direct flights from Moscow to the islands of Crete, Rhodes, Corfu, Kos, but only charter flights to the less popular islands.
An interesting option is to take a ferry and arrange a cruise to several Greek islands.

Weather in Greece – when is the best time to travel with a child?

You can go to Greece as early as March - depending on what goals you are pursuing and the duration of your planned vacation. If the purpose of the trip is sightseeing, then you can go in March-April. This is the best time for excursions, as the beauty of nature is incredible, everything is blooming and fragrant, and it’s not too hot to wander around historical places. The water is still cold at this time, so choose May-June for a beach holiday, this is the best time to have a great rest with your child. There is no sweltering heat yet, but the water is already warm.

In July-August, we don’t really recommend going to Greece with a child – the heat is intense, the prices are exorbitant and excursions are difficult to handle. The only option at this time is Corfu. The temperature there is slightly lower than in the rest of Greece, the sea breeze is refreshing and the holiday will be comfortable even at the height of the season. If your child doesn’t go to school yet, September is also a great time for a trip. At this time, prices are already falling somewhat, and the sea is still warm and the heat has already ended. It's time for excursions and a beach holiday.

To summarize, we can say that the most wonderful months for traveling with children, in order to combine all the joys of a holiday in Greece, will be June and September.

There is not much time left until the start of summer, school holidays and the holiday season. In order not to make a mistake when choosing a place for a family holiday with children, you need to start exploring the main holiday centers in Greece as early as possible. It's good that there is still enough time for this.

When starting your search for a hotel for a vacation at a resort that meets all your wishes, you should pay attention to several important characteristics: the location of the hotel, distance to the beach and attractions, the ability to order a children's menu, the quality of the beaches and cleanliness of the water, entertainment.

Holidays in Greece with a baby

If you are planning a vacation with your baby, the parents will have to make the choice themselves. It is better to give preference to the coast in a bay, where the water will be calm and warm, and in the immediate vicinity there will be objects interesting to young children, for example a botanical garden, a zoo or an aquarium, and water slides. At the hotel, you need to inquire in advance about the possibility of using a crib, the availability of a playroom and an equipped playground. Nanny services for children are also important for a comfortable stay. Family hotels that cater to children usually provide such amenities. They offer visitors children's discos, interest clubs, and exciting playgrounds. There are hotels of this type in almost every region of the country, especially on the islands of Rhodes, Crete and the Halkidiki peninsula. It is worth paying attention to the fact that despite the predominance of sandy beaches, there are also pebble beaches in Greece, for example, on the mountainous islands of Kos and Zakynthos. On such rocky beaches, the baby will not have the opportunity to trample the fine sand and build castles from it. You also need to pay attention to the complexity of the flight to your final destination. It is quite troublesome to travel with small children by plane with several transfers and long transit stops.

Holidays in Greece with a teenager

A teenage child may be involved in searching for a vacation spot. In this case, you need to listen to his opinion. He may be interested in everything: snorkeling, attractions, swimming schools, ruins of ancient cities, sailing. It is quite possible that the young researcher has long dreamed of seeing a certain landmark that he read about in a book. In terms of convenience, it is worth paying attention to Rhodes. This island has many interesting attractions, all of them close to each other. To see everything, you can rent a car and go on a trip with the whole family. If a teenager is interested in sports, he will be interested in spending time in Crete, where there are schools for tennis, scuba diving and windsurfing. Here you can also spend an exciting day in the Knossos Palace, surrounded by ancient myths and legends.

Resorts in Greece suitable for families with children

To the great joy of tourists, Greece has become a country in which the concept of quality recreation is by no means an empty phrase. The country has well-maintained beaches, amusement parks have been built, children's animators work in hotels, and many excursions are designed specifically for families with children of different ages. Here you can not only lie by the sea, but also plunge into the unknown world of myths and legends, which everyone has only read about in books.

Today, dozens of good hotels have been built in the country, which provide all the amenities, including small clean pools, swings, children's menus and entertainment programs throughout the day, including mini-performances of local musical groups and dancers, evenings of traditional cuisine, barbecue -parties and much more. Hotels are usually located near the sandy coast; the issue of a troublesome daily route to the sea disappears on its own. Most beaches are shallow, sandy, with a smooth entrance, without rocks or dangerous marine life on the bottom. In case of an unexpected need to see a doctor, there is always a medical professional at the hotel who will provide the necessary assistance to children. Throughout the warm season, the sea off the coast of Greece is calm and clean.

More information about some resorts

Having considered just a few of the most popular resorts among tourists, it will become clear that a vacation in Greece will be calm and comfortable for the whole family. To the east of Athens, just a two-hour drive from the capital, is a picturesque resort center called Tolo. Previously, this was a small village of fishermen: there is beautiful nature around, clear water and several small islands enlivening the sea horizon. The beaches here are exceptionally sandy and gently sloping, and the sea warms up by the end of May. The town has a wide variety of restaurants and shops selling goods. Located in Tolo, a family with children can easily travel around the surrounding area. Even a short excursion promises a lot of interesting and memorable things. Very close are some of the most beautiful cities of the country, Nafplio and Mystras. Mycenae, Sparta, and Olympia contain the remains of ancient civilizations; archaeological excavations and research are still underway in some places. Older children really enjoy yacht trips to the Greek islands of Poros and Hydra. There are animators on board who organize an interesting entertainment program for all little travelers. Another famous holiday destination with small children is Corfu. This green island will have plenty to do for both children and parents. Walking along the medieval streets, which have perfectly preserved the atmosphere of antiquity and mystery, can be alternated with swimming in the warm sea, riding slides and boats. In recent years, entertainment and developmental programs for children of all ages, focused on the abilities, interests and hobbies of each individual child, have become popular on the island. The cities of Sithonia and Kassandra are always popular on the southern peninsula of Halkidiki. The resorts are very green and the coast is picturesque. Children will surely love the pristine white beaches and delicious Mediterranean cuisine at the many restaurants, each uniquely decorated.

When choosing a resort and hotel for their family vacation, parents need to adhere to the “golden mean”. Pleaseing your child in everything is not the best parenting option. It is worth trying to find a resort where it will be good not only for the baby, but also for his parents.

Which resort in Greece to choose for a holiday with children?

Good afternoon friends! Vacation is ahead, you have children and are you thinking of spending it on the cozy beaches of Greece? An excellent choice based on the proximity, variety of resorts and hotels for family holidays.

But where to go to Greece with a child? In the article you will find a brief overview of resorts that are suitable both for visiting with small children and for relaxing with teenagers.

Greece is deservedly and rightly considered one of the most convenient countries where you can go on holiday with a child. Families with children enjoy spending their holidays here, choosing this country over many other resorts due to a number of undeniable advantages.

  • Firstly, a holiday in Greece is not as expensive as in Spain or Italy. And if desired, everyone can afford a “Greek vacation” at least once. The financial situation is especially relevant for families with children over 12 years old, because you have to pay for tours or air tickets as for adults, which greatly impacts the budget.
  • Secondly, the flight to Greece is short, this is especially important for families with a small child. Don’t forget about the huge number of offers from tour operators; even during peak season there is always a choice of tours. Plus, there are many regular flights to this country every day, which opens up ample opportunities for independent travel. In general, transport accessibility is a great advantage of Greece.
  • Thirdly, there are a huge number of gorgeous beaches and resorts, developed infrastructure, and most of the hotels are aimed specifically at family vacations. You can choose options with Russian animation and children's clubs for different ages. Some hotels operate according to the system, which is very convenient for families with children.
  • Fourthly, Greece can offer a holiday for every taste - with wellness and an excellent excursion program, in calm resorts with a peaceful atmosphere and in busy and noisy resorts, on amazing islands and on the mainland. The choice is huge from all points of view.

general information

In Greece, the beach season “starts” somewhere in mid-May and continues until the end of October. However, in different parts of the country the duration of the season favorable for swimming in the sea may vary somewhat. For example, on the islands of Greece it is warm and comfortable enough for swimming already in early May and throughout October, but in the northern Greek resorts the beach season begins later - only from the 2-3rd week of May, and ends earlier - at the end of September.

The best hotels in Greece, offering excellent opportunities for families with children, are usually located on the large islands, which are famous for their well-developed tourist infrastructure. These are islands such as Crete, Corfu and Rhodes. Many hotels on the Halkidiki peninsulas, Sithonia and Kassandra, are also family-oriented. It’s worth mentioning separately about the Peloponnese coast, famous for its clean beaches with comfortable entry into the sea.

In fact, tourists of any age category will enjoy holidaying in Greece. But let's figure out which resorts in Greece are best suited for a holiday with a child.

Rhodes Island

Kos Island

The island of Kos has retained its unique pastoral-village character to this day. Its wonderful landscapes with hilly horizons and gorgeous beaches will not leave anyone indifferent. And the calm and relaxing atmosphere that prevails on the island will allow you to truly enjoy being united with the local nature.

The range of entertainment for children is slightly smaller than in Rhodes - a small water park "Lido Waterpark", a karting club, the well-known Peacock Grove. Most often, Kos is chosen as a holiday destination for families with very young children.

You can go with a small child to Agios Stefanos beach. The resort villages of Psalidi and Kefalos are also perfect for kids. Teenagers will not be bored on Tsingaki Beach, due to the presence of a youth sports club there.

Crete

Crete is an island where neither children nor adults will get bored. Of course, there are 5 water parks, many interesting museums, an aquarium, the ancient Palace of Knossos, the famous Cave of Zeus, a luxurious botanical garden with a picturesque lake on the territory, which contains exotic flowers, trees and shrubs.

Crete is able to offer its guests, including young tourists, a variety of local landscapes that are not inferior to each other in beauty. These include rocky, steep shores, mountains, lush green gardens, and secluded bays.

Crete rightfully boasts the largest number of sunny days per year in Greece, as well as many beautiful beaches, protected from the winds and large waves of the open sea. A huge number of modern hotels with well-developed infrastructure for family holidays is the final argument in favor of choosing Crete for a holiday with a child.

Santorini Archipelago

The largest and main island of the archipelago, which has a name consonant with it, is most popular among tourists. But it is worth noting that the resort is not entirely “suitable” for a holiday with a child; there is practically no entertainment for children here.

Santorini is an island of romantics and lovers, as well as lovers of beautiful landscapes. The only thing that can surprise children here is the colorful beaches, the color of the sand on them changes from milky white to black, turning into pink, golden, and even burgundy shades!

Teenagers will certainly be bored here. But very young children do not particularly need any entertainment. Therefore, you should not cross Santorini off the list of places to go to Greece with a child. I wrote more about the island.

Paros Island

Paros is the third largest island of the Cyclades. It is not as green as other Greek islands, but this does not at all spoil the unique beauty of the local nature.

Among the entertainments that will be interesting for children in Paros, it is worth noting the Archaeological Museum, the ruins of ancient buildings that have survived to this day, for example, the Temple of Poseidon, and the Lemon Garden.

For a holiday with a child, it is better to choose villages and hotels located near Naoussa and Parikia (the main cities of the island).

Zakynthos Island

The island of Zakynthos is undoubtedly considered one of the most beautiful, and at the same time, one of the most inaccessible Greek islands. Getting here is not easy and there is no special entertainment infrastructure for children here.

But if you do decide to come here, you will get tremendous pleasure from the beauty of nature and the magnificent beaches of the island. Almost all of them have the honorary sign of the “blue flag”, which is evidence of their environmental cleanliness and livability.

The vast majority of resorts on the island of Zakynthos are quiet and peaceful villages with uniquely beautiful nature, where all the conditions are created to relax and unwind, “picking up” unforgettable impressions of Greece.

Corfu Island

A holiday on the island of Corfu will cost slightly more than on Rhodes or Crete. There are unique attractions here - Paleo Frurio (ancient fortress), the wonderful Aqualand water park, as well as luxurious “sea” and “land” excursion programs.

There are many family hotels in Corfu, the concept of which is designed for families with children. With a small child it is better to go to the beaches of Marathias, Prasudi, Halikuna. Teenagers will be more interested in Kontoyalos. The most populous and famous village in Corfu is Sidari.

More complete information can be found in the article.

Thassos Island

Thassos is one of the greenest islands in Greece. I won’t stay at this resort for long; there is a separate article on the blog. I will only say that with a small child it is better to go to the village of Potamya, it is not as noisy there as in Limenaria, plus there is a very comfortable Skala Potamyas beach.

Mainland Greece

The Greek capital, Athens, is also perfect for an active holiday with children. After all, there is such a huge selection of interesting places and entertainment here. It is in Athens that the largest amusement park in Greece, Allu, is located, a magnificent planetarium, a huge zoo, the Museum of Natural History, a children's museum in Plaka and much more! Read about entertainment in the capital of Greece.

Thessaloniki is the second largest Greek city, recognized throughout the world as the cultural center of the country. There are many beautiful streets, a huge number of attractions (for example, the ancient Agora, the tomb of King Philip, the White Tower, Aristotle Square, etc.), and a gorgeous embankment.

Thessaloniki has wonderful water parks and a large zoo. Here you can have an interesting time with your child; in terms of the number of entertainment and options for free time, the city is in no way inferior to the capital! One caveat, there are no beaches in Thessaloniki, and if you want to swim in the sea, you will have to go to the beaches located on the peninsulas adjacent to the city.

The resorts on the peninsula of Halkidiki and the Peloponnese are not so rich in children's entertainment, but they have simply amazingly beautiful nature, as well as a gorgeous historical heritage. After all, this is where ancient Sparta and Olympia, the famous Byzantine Museum, and many other attractions are located.

Where to go to Greece with a child? The article contains the most popular places in Greece. But this does not mean that other islands and resorts in the country do not allow families with children to have a good rest. Choosing a specific resort is a matter of taste and personal preference!

Greece: going on holiday with children

How to properly prepare and choose a resort

What time of year is it better to go to Greece with children, which resort to choose and what not to forget to take with you? Which hotel chains are most adapted for family holidays and what can you get as part of a standard tour package?

Five reasons for it

Greece is good at any time of the year, and May and June are ideal months for holidays with children (as are September and October). At this time there is still no sweltering heat, and you can already swim in the sea.

You can save on accommodation - many hotels do not charge a fee if a child under 12 (and sometimes up to 14) years old lives in the same room with his parents. And if you have two children with you, there will also be a discount. Most resort hotels open at the end of April, and vacation prices have not yet risen. However, keep in mind that children's infrastructure begins to fully function from the moment the hotels are fully occupied, i.e. from the end of May.

Good beaches and transport accessibility of hotels. Below we will suggest places where the beaches are sandy or with small pebbles, with a flat bottom and there are no cold coastal currents. Most hotels are located close to the airport (10–50 km) - your little ones will not have time to get sick in transport.

A large selection of all-inclusive hotels aimed at families with children.

Excellent ecology, clean sea, always fresh and healthy food, an abundance of local fruits - everything that is missing at home. And most importantly - traditional Greek hospitality and love for children. In the tavern your child will be treated to juice and sweets, in the store they will give you a trinket, and everywhere your child will be welcome as if they were their own.

Which resort should you choose? The further south you go, the warmer it gets.

Crete is the southernmost, hottest and largest Greek island. Popular resorts among Russians and the main tourist infrastructure are concentrated on the northern coast, from Chania to Elounda. Most of the beaches are perfect for families with children: wide sandy ones alternate with small pebbles, the beaches of numerous bays are protected by rocks from the wind and waves. For family holidays, the most popular choices are: Elafonisi (pink sand), Falasarna, Balos (white sand), Platanias, Agia Marina, Georgioupolis, Adeli, Panormo, Bali, Agia Pelagia, Amoudara, Hokkini Hani (Water City water park), Gouves ( beaches marked with Blue Flags for cleanliness), Anisaras, Stalida and Malia (natural sand), Sissi, Elounda, Mirabello Bay (Agios Nikolaos). But there is a nuance that may affect holidays with children in July and August. In the north of Crete there is a strong north-westerly wind called "meltemi", which brings storms.

The southern coast of Crete is not so popular among Russians. The main disadvantages are that the transfer from Heraklion takes more than 2 hours and the tourist infrastructure is not so developed. But the water and air are a couple of degrees warmer compared to the northern coast, which is especially important at the beginning and end of the season. The proximity of the African Sahara, which is just a stone's throw from the Libyan coast, has an effect. If you want to take a break from the hustle and bustle of large resorts, are ready to live in a private house or apartment, and enjoy authentic Greek cuisine every day in coastal taverns - these places are for you. Excellent beaches: Matala, Agia Galini, Kalamaki and. Chrissi in the Libyan Sea.

Most family hotels in Crete operate on an all-inclusive basis and offer a large number of included and paid services and entertainment for children. For example, in Grecotel hotels for the youngest (up to three years old) under the GRECOBABY program you can pre-order a crib, a high chair for feeding, a washbasin stand, disposable children's potties and seats, a stroller (cane), a changing mattress, a heating device and a sterilizer for bottles, an electric kettle, a baby bath, a portable cradle seat, and a baby monitor. Older children can enjoy games and entertainment based on Greek history, quests, cooking and Greek dance lessons, tournaments, mini-discos and water activities. Sbokos hotels have children's and teenagers' clubs, playgrounds, mini-pools, and highchairs and cots are provided free of charge upon request. Or you can buy an extended “children's package” for babies from 50 € per week. The hotels beloved by Russians are not inferior to their competitors in the quality and variety of offers for children: hobby groups, mini-discos, children's restaurants, educational games - you can't list everything.

Rhodes is the champion in the number of sunny days

Champion among the Greek islands in the number of sunny days (340) per year. As in Crete, the swimming season opens in May. The best places for swimming with children are in the east of Rhodes. The West Coast is ideal for surfing due to constant winds and good waves. We recommend resorts on the east coast: Faliraki (there is a mini-zoo, a water park and an amusement town), Kallithea, Kolymbia, Tsambika. In the vicinity of Lindos there are good beaches in the resort villages of Kiotari and Lardos.

The choice of hotels in Rhodes aimed at families with children is huge. These are large all-inclusive club-type complexes or cozy family apartments with an equipped kitchen. The chain hotels Mitsis, Aldemar, Grecotel, Atrium and many others, popular among Russians, offer excellent conditions for families with children and a wide range of services. Let us not repeat, the children's infrastructure in family hotels in Rhodes is similar to hotels in Crete.

Many Greek family resort hotels declare "children's service". What is meant? In addition to the availability of appropriate infrastructure and staff of teachers, the hotel offers a special menu in the children's area of the main restaurant. Children will be offered pizza, fries, meatballs and soda. That is, what children love most, and not baby food as we understand it. On the other hand, on the buffet in the main restaurant, even in the “three ruble”, there will always be boiled potatoes, chicken and steamed cutlets. And if suddenly not, ask the chef, they will not refuse you and will cook for you. And they will help chop other dishes from the buffet for the child.

What to take with you

In some hotels, on the “children's table” you will find purees in jars or powder mixtures. But it’s not a fact that they will immediately suit your child. Therefore, take your usual baby food with you from home at least for the first days. You don’t need to take a children’s potty; in a large supermarket it costs a few euros. But you need to take a pacifier and a bottle. Your mixture will be heated in the kitchen to the desired temperature. By the way, in Greece it is not customary to eat dishes prepared yesterday. Leftover food from the table is mercilessly thrown away. Therefore, even at All inclusive, you are unlikely to be served food left over from the last meal. Everything is always fresh. And don’t forget to take a travel first aid kit for your child. In Greek pharmacies you will only find analogues of familiar medications, and “translation difficulties” may arise.

In the next review, the site will tell you about other popular resorts in Greece for family and active recreation, advise what to see and buy, where to have fun and much more.

Greece ranks second in the ranking of popularity of countries for families with children after Turkey. There are many reasons for family tourism. In addition to the easy procedure for obtaining a Schengen visa, parents also appreciate the short and inexpensive flight, a large selection of resort areas, familiar food and the mild Mediterranean climate.

When is the best time to go?

The area of Greece is quite large, over 120 thousand km2, so the climate of the regions differs markedly, especially at the poles of the tourist season (May-June and September-October).

Those who are going to the north-east of the country to Macedonia and Thrace (Katherine, Thessaloniki, Chalkidiki, Thassos) should know that the climate here is moderate. Winters are cool and rainy, while summers are hot and dry. The average temperature in cold January is +8°C, and in the hottest month of August it is around 32.1°C. Warm weather sets in in May and lasts until mid-October. But Don't rush here in late spring and early summer, because May is one of the rainiest months in the local climate. For excursion tours, you can choose June or September, and for a holiday on the beach it is better to choose July-August, up to +26°C. Another nuance that tourists should definitely know: even in the hottest August, the air cools down to +21°C at night.

Most of the country (Glyfada, Peloponnese, Crete, Corfu, Rhodes, Zakynthos, Santorini) is located in the Mediterranean climate zone. In winter it is warm and damp, and in summer it is dry and hot. The coldest month of the year is January, when the temperature drops to +12.7°C, and in August it rises to +31°. The swimming season opens in early June (sometimes earlier) and lasts until mid-October . But we would not recommend choosing October because of the high probability of rain; August is characterized by strong winds, which is rather a plus (not so hot).

The most comfortable weather conditions for family travel occur in the second half of June and August-September, when the heat subsides a little.

What to look for when choosing a resort

For holidays with children, parents most often choose the island part of Greece: Crete or Rhodes. Why did we talk in detail in our articles about family and... However, other resorts in the country are no less interesting.

Mainland

Athens may be a good choice if the child is already 7-8 years old. In addition to beautiful beaches, the resort offers a rich excursion program and a lot of entertainment.

Pieria is an area known for its beautiful beaches and picturesque landscapes. You can relax inexpensively in small resorts like Paralia Katerini.

Halkidiki, a peninsula in northeastern Greece, has a mild climate. A trip here can be compared to a visit to a sanatorium; the resort owes this effect to the combination of climatic conditions with healing air, in which iodine and the smell of pine needles are mixed. For family tourists, they most often recommend (Nea Moudania, Nea Potidea and Hanioti) and (Agios Nikolaos and Neos Marmaras).

Peloponnese - chosen because of its mild, dry climate and proximity to Athens, allowing you to explore the sights of the capital. The best resorts are considered to be Costa Navarino (south), Skafidia (west), Larissas (north) and Tolo, Loutraki (east).

Island part

Crete is the undoubted leader among Greek family resorts. Accessibility, scenic beauty and plenty of entertainment attract thousands of tourists to its beaches every year. Among the resorts we can recommend:

  • Agia Marina
  • Georgioupolis
  • Gouves
  • Stalida
  • Kokkini-Khani (for kids),
  • Agia Pelagia (for older children)

Rhodes only slightly behind Crete in popularity. Here it is better to choose resorts on the east coast:

  • Kolymbia

Corfu more often chosen by parents of schoolchildren. The most popular among family tourists are:

  • Dassia
  • Kassiopi
  • Kontokali

Zoos, zoos

Children can reveal the secrets of nature, or at least look into them, in the Biotopoi natural park in Rethymnon or the Rhodes “Valley of Butterflies”, where butterflies from all over the island rush to the smell of unique trees. At the same time, the Athens Zoo and Dolphinarium invites you to see the inhabitants of the earth and the sea.

Amusement and amusement parks

But there are not so many usual amusement parks in Greece. The main ones are Athens “Allou Fun Park” and “Fantasy Land”. There is “International Luna Park” in Glyfada, and “Magic Park” in Thessaloniki. At resorts you have to be content with visiting attractions.

Amusement park in Athens “Allou Fun Park”

Water parks

Water slides are an excellent substitute for any attractions and excursions for children. Not all parents like it, but your child will be absolutely happy with the holiday, since there is quite a large choice. At some resorts you can even choose between them.

What to look for when choosing a hotel

First of all, you need to know that Greek hotels meet the standards of international classification, i.e. There is no need to worry about the level of service. Hotels from 4 stars and above are guaranteed to be of sufficiently high quality and will provide you with all the necessary services. But there are a number of questions that should definitely be clarified:

  • Location. The first coastline is a must, otherwise your vacation can be ruined by long climbs up the mountain every day.
  • Sand beach. Almost all beaches in Greece are equipped (with the exception of wild ones), but even within the same resort the beach may be different in front of each hotel, so it is better to check. Also pay attention to the water drain and the bottom (you can look for this in the reviews).
  • Nutrition. Typically hotels offer half board or full board, which does not include drinks. Pay attention to tourist reviews about hotel food so that your child can eat well.
  • Children's leisure. Choose hotels with green, landscaped areas where children can frolic in a separate pool and play on the playground. In addition, not all hotels offer children's animation, and if they do, it is most often in English or German (however, this does not prevent children from communicating)

If all these points are important to you, then look at hotels in Greece of 4-5 categories. Usually they are located on the coast, have a large and well-equipped area for children's leisure, and animators work in the summer season.
