"Aryan" problem - the problem of origin and ancestral home, cultural role and the historical heritage of the Aryan tribes has occupied world science for more than two centuries. Who are the Aryans-Aryans?

Aryans are peoples who speak the languages of the Iranian and Indian groups of the Indo-European language family, as well as Kafirs (Nuristanis) and Dards. Their ancestors had common name- "Arya", "Aryan", similar culture and way of life, lived on the same territory, but several millennia ago they left their cradle and began to move to lands far from each other; gradually Aryan unity disintegrated. At present, the peoples of the Iranian group live in Ossetia, Tajikistan, Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Pakistan, as well as in the countries bordering them. Representatives of the Indo-Aryan ethnic groups inhabit India - mainly its central and northern regions, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, the Maldives, the east and south of Pakistan. Migrants, descendants of the Indo-Aryans, formed large colonies in Myanmar, Singapore, Malaysia, the islands of Mauritius in the Indian and Fiji in the Pacific Ocean, in the West Indies (Caribbean Sea) and Guiana, in South Africa and on the coast of East Africa. A large number of them settled in North America and in Europe. Dards and Nuristanis live in Kashmir and in the provinces adjacent to Kashmir in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The total number of Aryan-speaking peoples is about 1 billion people, they make up about a seventh of the entire population of the Earth. Of this billion Indo-Aryans, there are approximately 900 million, Iranians - more than 90 million, Dards and Nuristanis - 5-6 million people.

The ancient Aryans created three highly developed and peculiar civilizations - Persian, Indo-Gangese and Turano-Scythian, had a significant impact on the cultures of Western and Southeast Asia, the Caucasus, China, the Turkic, Mongolian, Slavic and Ugro-Finnish peoples. Their contribution to the treasury of the spiritual values of mankind is unusually weighty. Aryans-Indo-Iranians broke into world history at the beginning of the II millennium BC. - in an era when the great civilizations of Egypt, Mesopotamia, Harappa (Indus Valley) and the islands Eastern Mediterranean(Crete-Mycenaean world) experienced the deepest internal crisis. The tribes of the Aryan root contributed to the renewal of ancient societies, gave a powerful impetus to the world cultural and historical process. For two millennia - up to the III-IV centuries AD. - they were in charge actors world history- until they grew old and gave way to younger peoples.

Among the Indo-Europeans, the "Aryans" were not an isolated group devoid of family ties. Slavic, Baltic (Letto-Lithuanian), as well as Armenian and ancient Greek languages are close to their dialects. The speakers of these languages had with the Indo-Iranians many common ethnographic features, cult-mythological ideas, and psychological traits, dating back to a single source. This indicates that the ancestors of the Greeks and Armenians, the Balto-Slavs and the Indo-Iranians constituted one cultural-historical block in ancient times. However, the proto-Greeks and proto-Armenians separated from this bloc very early and did not maintain such close family ties with the Indo-Iranians as the ancestors of the Balto-Slavs. Much further than the listed peoples, the carriers of other Indo-European dialects, in particular, the Germans and the Celts, are separated from the Aryans. Therefore, the Slavs and Balts (Lithuanians and Latvians) have much more reason to be called Aryans than the Germans, Scandinavians, French and other European peoples.

What was the ancient Aryan society like? The study of various sources suggests that long before the start of large-scale migrations, the Indo-Iranians were pastoral tribes. cornerstone their public life was a large patriarchal family, typical of the pastoral peoples of Eurasia. The basis of the economy was the breeding of cattle and horses. The number of cows and bulls was the main measure of material well-being and wealth, a cow was considered the best sacrifice that the gods could wish for. The foundation of the military power of the Aryans was the war cavalry, magnificent chariots. A thoroughbred horse was worth a whole herd of ordinary ones. All other animals were inferior in their importance to cows and horses, and in addition to them, the Indo-Iranians bred goats, sheep, and two-humped camels. Pig breeding was almost unknown to them, it was considered a matter of little honor, pigs were not sacrificed to the gods. The Aryans were also engaged in agriculture, but it was a secondary occupation for them.

The tribes of the Indo-Iranians were semi-sedentary; every few years they moved their villages to a new place, which, as a rule, was not far from the former camp. The Aryans did not know the potter's wheel, sculpted ceramics "by hand" and fired it not in a furnace, but in special pits or on a fire. Their ritual utensils were wooden.

The Indo-Iranians lived in large houses dug into the ground, they also used dwellings on wheels - like wagons or wagons, they knew many metals and alloys - copper, gold, silver, bronze, they made weapons and utensils from them. The Aryans were well versed in the art of woodworking, it was they who perfected the technique of building chariots.

The Indo-Iranians were warlike people, military booty - cattle, pastures, captives - was one of the most important sources of their well-being. Wars were fought almost constantly - both between the Indo-Iranians themselves, and between them and other peoples.

The Aryans were expert gatherers of wild honey, and it was an essential element of their diet. The main food for them was fresh cow's milk and products obtained from it: spoiled milk and butter, as well as cereal dishes like porridge and boiled meat. For various rituals and religious celebrations, the Indo-Iranians made "sauma" - a drink that led to a state of sacred ecstasy. On secular holidays, public and family, drunken "sura" was used. These holidays opened with equestrian competitions, followed by a collective feast.

The Aryans wore leather-made trousers, boots and jackets, as well as a hood - clothes that later became traditional for the mass of Eurasian nomads.

The Indo-Iranians either cremated their dead, or buried them under burial mounds, or (much less often) left them to the will of the elements and the devourers fell on the territory of burial grounds designated for this purpose.

The most ancient Aryans did not know a specialized, oriented market relations, crafts, money trade and cities, did not build fortresses, palaces, or temples, probably did not have either cult images or writing.

In their midst, three social groups, which were called "flowers". The most numerous of the "flowers" were community herders. The second group was represented by warriors, the third - by priests. They were the most revered social class. Kings, "sons of the Sun", who crowned the entire system, were considered warrior-priests. social organization Aryans and led individual tribes and tribal unions.

Various branches of the Aryans created great monuments of ancient religious thought, the Indo-Aryans - the Vedas, the southern Iranians - the Avesta. Judging by these monuments, they worshiped a host of gods, believing, at the same time, that behind all the diversity of life phenomena lies a single and eternal Primal Foundation, a spiritual and creative principle that created this world, God the Absolute. Each of their many gods embodied different aspects of this Absolute.

There were very few female deities in the Indo-Iranian pantheon, and a severe patriarchy reigned in it. The Aryan gods were shepherd gods. Their most frequent epithets are "lord of vast pastures", "sending beautiful wealth", etc. The gods were asked to irrigate pastures, give herds of horses and bulls. In Indo-Iranian hymns, the gods were depicted riding horse-drawn chariots, their most important function was to protect livestock from demons or their servants in the earthly world.

Sacrifices were the main element of the religious practice of the Aryans. Sacrifices were made not only to the gods, but also to the ancestors. In addition to animals, the gods were offered ghee, saumu and milk. In honor of the ancestors, mounds were built with stone altars.

The cult of the horse was extremely developed among the Indo-Iranians, along with it, probably, the cult of the beaver, less common among them, also existed.

An essential component of the religion of the Aryans was also the veneration of fire and the worship of the sun. It is possible that the very name "Arya" goes back to the ancient name of the Sun - Svar, Svara.

In the Indo-Iranian environment, a sacred mythopoetic language developed, which was used when performing rituals and addressing the gods. The poetics of the Aryans was based on pastoral terms. The images of a cow, a bull and a horse permeate the Indian "Vedas", the Iranian "Zend-Avesta". All of them are based on symbolic system religious texts, shimmering alliterations and hidden meanings using a large number of epithets and synonyms. Only in the "Rigveda" - the main of the "Vedas" - to designate key images- a horse, a bull and a cow are used at least 10 - 15 different synonyms.

Where is the ancestral home of the Aryans, which the peoples of the Indian branch called "Arya Varta", the peoples of the Iranian branch - "Aryan Veja", i.e. "Aryan space"?

As already mentioned, the search for it has been going on for more than two centuries, but there is still no consensus in science about where it is located. The Aryan cradle was sought in the Himalayas and in India, in the Middle East and in Central Asia, in Europe and the Caucasus, in the Arctic and in Tibet. Supporters of the most authoritative and reasonable point of view believe that it was located in the strip from the Carpathians to the Volga.

It is known that the ancestral home of the Aryans occupied the eastern part of the common Indo-European focus, was in a zone of temperate, relatively dry and continental climate, abounded in open extended spaces. All this seems to testify in favor of the localization of the Aryan ancestral home precisely in the steppes and forest-steppes of the Great Russian Plain, however, many facts suggest that it was located to the east - on the slopes of the Urals and in the Trans-Urals.

In his Essay on Inequality human races» (1855). Gobineau defined this term as fair-haired and blue-eyed representatives of the white race, whom he considered as the highest level of this race and, consequently, of all mankind.

IN scientific literature the term fell into disuse in the first half of the 20th century and is no longer used. The pseudo-scientific nature of the term is derived from a mixture of linguistic and anthropological characteristics, since in linguistics the Indo-Iranian languages are now called Aryan, and at the time the term appeared, Indo-European languages in general; but carriers of both those and others do not have common physical properties and do not form any race. So, the carriers of the Aryan languages are such anthropologically different peoples as the Ossetians, Persians, Tajiks, Gypsies, Indians and Veddas (the latter are generally Australoids). Anthropological diversity among speakers of all Indo-European languages is much higher.

Often at the mention of the word Aryans many for some reason remember the Germans. Although the idea of the Aryan origin of the Germans was popularized at one time and even served as a justification for the war and the atrocities of Nazi Germany during the Second World War, it has a completely different meaning.

When was it first used

Schlegel was the first person to introduce the word "Aryans" into circulation. This great scientist, philosopher and writer noticed that all the languages spoken by different peoples who inhabited the globe have common features. Despite the fact that all languages are different, among them one can distinguish some features which are common to all languages without exception.

This led him to the idea that all peoples have one common root and descended from the same nation. He called the nation Aryans. It's just that in many languages the word ariya means "supreme, origin", that is, having an ancient noble origin.

So usually the representatives different peoples call themselves, and the rest are called non-Aryans, that is, those who are not of noble birth, they are classified as non-humans. In the 21st century, this sounds unusual, but for the ancient peoples this attitude towards foreigners was natural.

Subsequently, philologists confirmed his assumption. They shared all languages into the two largest groups: Indo-European and Indo-Iranian, each of which, in turn, is divided into families and separate languages and dialects.

The Aryans did not disappear, they just spread throughout the area the globe. They have external differences, such as skin color, eye shape, but basically all people are one people.

In the future, languages developed, as the environment and life of a person changed, new objects appeared, which each nation called in its own way. Hence this feature of languages: the farther peoples are from each other, the greater the difference between the sound of words and syntax. For example, if you compare Russian and Chinese or Russian and Ukrainian, then the latter will be understandable even without an interpreter.

Distortion of meaning - the beginning of racial theories

Peaceful, armchair theories have one drawback - they are difficult to sell, since they do not have dynamism and struggle, they set out dry facts, without praise for any individual people. This leveling did not suit everyone.

Especially in the 18-19 centuries, when the colonies were ruled by whites, the British and the French, who read that they were only due to their nationality and skin color smarter and more talented than any black man.

Following the writings of Schlegel, in which he expounded his views on the origin of languages and the connection of the peoples of the Earth, other theories appear, this time racial, which dominated almost the entire nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth.

So the two most prominent philosophers of that time Gobineau and Chamberlain in their writings they describe the struggle between the Aryan and Semitic races. Chamberlain believed that the Germans were the direct descendants of the Aryans.

The layman liked the simplicity of presentation and indulgence of national swagger more. Since he is a German, it means Aryan, which means the best, by origin. If a non-Aryan has some property, but an Aryan does not have it, then the Aryan has the right to take away, and kill the non-Aryan. A non-Aryan initially has no rights.

The Consequences of Trying to Put Racial Theory into Practice turned into a disaster. The theory became the justification for the start of the largest war in terms of the number of victims in Europe, as well as the mass extermination of the indigenous population in the colonies by English settlers. Some tribes were completely exterminated.

Modern theories of the origin and disappearance of the Aryans

In addition to the officially accepted theory of the origin of the Aryans, there are many theories that were invented very recently. Most of these theories are pseudoscientific. Usually they are based on a free retelling of myths about the existence, somewhere far away, of an extraordinary people with unique abilities. All peoples have such myths, without exception.

Some of the more recent theories are based on racial theories of the last century.

Aryans, at the same time, the authors of theories consider ancestors of their own people. Usually such theories are popular in countries with a "missing" history of independent existence. In an attempt to fill this gap, many rulers try to use such writings as a substitute true history of his people.

As you can see, the word ariya has not lost its original meaning even in the 21st century. They, as before, designate a people of noble origin, an elected people who have more rights than other peoples. And although the dissemination of racial theories is prohibited in many countries, miraculously there are people who manage to circumvent this law.

Undoubtedly, the question of who the Aryans are and how this nation appeared is of interest to many, although it requires the most careful study and detailed analysis.

The Aryans are a people who spoke languages belonging to the eastern branch of the Indo-European family, and belonged to the northern racial type.

Who are the Aryans, and where did they live in general? According to legend, the ancient Aryans migrated from Hyperborea, a state that was formed in a territory dominated by a harsh northern climate. However, five decades ago, European scientists were absolutely sure that the Aryans have Asian roots. Subsequently, it was customary to consider the northwestern part of Europe as the homeland of the Aryans, and the initial racial type of the Aryans was defined as Nordic (northern). From Irish "aire" is translated as "leader", "to know", from Old Norse - "noble". And yet who are the Aryans? Superior race, demigods? This is an interpretation of only Adolf Hitler and no one else.

First of all, they are carriers of religious texts called Avesta and Rig Veda - they give an understanding of who the Aryans really are. It should be recognized that after themselves the "fifth race" left a colossal legacy.

It must be emphasized that for the first time the concept of "Aryan race" was introduced by J.A. Gobineau, who in the 19th century published his work entitled "Experience on the inequality of human races." At the same time, he has superiority over others. After his works were printed, soldiers began to call themselves Aryans. Moreover, as a “noble” race, Aryans should have blue eyes and blond hair.

The Nazis considered the Aryan race as a kind of specific gene pool, which is represented exclusively by the Germans, since it is they who are superior to other peoples in mental, moral and physical qualities. In addition, all Aryans must be tall, have impeccable health and be in excellent physical shape.

The Fuhrer liked the theory of a perfect race. In his book "Main Kampf" he emphasized that the history of the Aryans deserves a comprehensive study by every soldier of Nazi Germany. According to Adolf Hitler, every true Aryan"should take care of the "purity of blood", and, in his opinion, it is criminal to marry a representative of an inferior race. At the same time, the fascist dictator had no doubt that it was necessary to strictly monitor the level of demographics in the country, and people who had "poor" health were forbidden to have children.

For his country, Hitler wanted to prepare the role of a world leader who would rule over all nations. According to the "chief" Nazi, the Aryan (German) race "gives birth" exclusively brilliant people who are called to rule the world. Others must do their will and obey them implicitly, because they are mediocre, and they have absolutely no talent. The Fuhrer gave a definition to all peoples without exception from the standpoint of their similarity with the Aryan race.

In addition to the inhabitants of Scandinavia, Hitler believed that the Japanese, although they differ in appearance, but in spirit are close to the Aryans. At the same time, representatives of other peoples inhabiting South East Asia, he considered "almost monkeys".

The issue of the nation and the so-called "purity of blood" worries everyone in different ways. There are people in the family who had representatives various nationalities, and they do not worry about this at all and are proud of their ancestors. And there are those who do not perceive representatives of other races and despises them. They enter into marriages only when they are convinced of the pedigree of their future half, and, noticing at least the slightest nuances in it, immediately break off any relationship.

Truth or fiction

Many to this day argue about who the Aryans are. In translation, "Aryan" means "respected", "worthy", "noble". However, this term is not scientific. It was put forward by the nationalists with the aim of dividing the people living at that time into worthy and unworthy. The former included representatives of European nationalities, primarily belonging to the so-called Norman type. Traditionally, this is the name given to people from Northern Europe who have a strong physique, blond hair and blue eyes. The representatives of those who, according to the nationalists, were unworthy of life, were primarily considered Jews.

Hitler's theory

Surely everyone knows that Hitler's dream was not only to conquer the whole world, but also to create an ideal race, according to his theory, fair-haired and blue-eyed people. To understand who Hitler's Aryans are, it is enough to read his quote:

“All human culture, all the achievements of art, science and technology, which we are witnessing today, are the fruits of the creativity of the Aryans ... He [the Aryan] is the Prometheus of mankind, from whose bright brow sparks of genius flew at all times, kindling the fire of knowledge, illuminating the darkness of the gloomy ignorance, which allowed man to rise above other creatures of the Earth.

Considering the nature and pathological determination in achieving the goals he himself set, Hitler made demands not only on the external data of ideal people. Giving a definition of who the Aryans are, he also took into account character traits, lifestyle, principles and even features of sexual development and maturation. The requirements were very strict, but the desire for a fictitious ideal was so high that those who did not meet the slightest requirement were shamefully expelled from the caste of the elite and could even be physically destroyed. Arguing on the topic of who the Aryans were, Hitler acted harshly: compassion was alien to him, and with equal success (if one can put it that way, of course), both children and adults were destroyed on his orders.

Making a portrait of an Aryan

To imagine who the Aryans are and how they look, you can familiarize yourself with the alleged criteria that were applied to the appearance, type of character and features of the physical and sexual development of this category of people.

So, a real purebred Aryan is distinguished by:

very light, almost snow-white skin;
light, preferably blue eyes;
smooth and thin hair of light shades;
height at least 180 cm (women may be shorter);
weight proportional to height;
refined features, long thin fingers;
lack of hair on the back, legs, other manifestations on the face and in the genital area are mild;
high forehead and correct form scull;
absence of superciliary arches;
the presence of a sign of a metopic suture on the forehead;
evenly set eyes;
straight and healthy teeth;
late puberty and late aging;
pleasant sounding speech;
required talents and (preferably) genius;
lack of desire for physical and monotonous work;
equilibrium;
independence from alcohol and drugs;
lack of susceptibility to hereditary diseases (in principle, a person should not get sick);
accuracy;
complete rejection of even the thought of an alien racial culture, religion, dislike for Jews;
selective and legible in sexual relations;
strong ideas about the value of the family;
an Aryan woman is beautiful, slender, faithful to her husband, loves children, is an excellent housewife, hates Jews.

After studying these characteristics, one can imagine who the Aryans are and what they look like. A photo of all those considered worthy representatives of the highest race will not give a complete impression, so it remains only to dream up.

If you believe the statistics, then most often when asked who the Aryans are, associations arise precisely with the period of the nationalist movement during the Second World War, but such a nation actually existed and still exists. This question causes a lot of confusion in the scientific world, because the race of Indo-Europeans, some of whom were called Aryans, really existed.

An artificially created or historically based nation?

Most of the peoples of the world speak similar languages. This can only mean one thing: we all have common roots and origins. Even in the ancient tribes, there was a division of people according to social status, and given natural selection, which, under conditions wildlife stood especially hard, only the strongest and most dexterous survived. Tribes consisting of such people conquered territories, later their leaders became rulers, etc. The Aryan tribe was unique.

Its representatives were something of a legend of the time. They were looked up to, imitated, respected and feared. It was precisely because of their historical superiority that Hitler chose them as a model. He repelled not only from appearance, although, of course, this fact cannot be denied. High cheekbones and even facial features are inherent in most Germans, however, similar differences in physique are also characteristic of many representatives. Slavic peoples with which the Nazis waged a fierce struggle. But why should they fight if (focusing on external signs) they are associated with the Slavs family ties? This dilemma is the reason why a clear answer to the question of who the Aryans are cannot be obtained.

Historical facts

Brief historical overview will help people who are interested in who the Aryans are and where they came from. Tribes living in northern Europe are often referred to as Indo-Europeans. This term is still used today, but has a wider meaning than in the last century. How the Aryans themselves called themselves is unknown to historians to this day. These tribes occupied the then fertile lands and are often considered the founders of Agriculture and animal husbandry.

Interesting, but if you believe the studies, then the Aryans originally lived on the territory modern Russia and not in Germany.

Around the second millennium BC, there was a large-scale resettlement of representatives of this tribe throughout the globe. Of course, preference was given to areas suitable for agriculture, but the harsh conditions, in principle, did not frighten them.

As a result of mixing with other peoples, their appearance has undergone significant changes, and it has become impossible to determine the origin. Even modern indigenous Tajiks have two main types of appearance. One half is swarthy, dark-haired and dark-eyed people, and the other half has blond hair and blue eyes. But that doesn't mean they're Aryans, does it?

A nation of kings and rulers

Even without really knowing who the Aryans were and where they lived, the ancient kings and emperors recognized belonging to this race as prestigious and were always looking for an opportunity to find representatives of this race among their ancestors.

Perhaps this was the product of what we call nationalism and fascism. After all, the concept that all people are brothers exists only in church teachings, but practically does not occur in life.

Theory of Adolf Lanz

At the beginning of the 20th century, the views of the Catholic monk Adolf Lanz on the origin of the human races on Earth were published. He believed that initially there were two tribes - Aryans and people-animals. The first he called heroic, and the second monkeys. The "super talented" Aryans were of divine origin and even looked like angels.
