The creative association of artists Kukryniksy, which became famous in the 30-40s of the XX century for its satirical works, is almost unknown to new generations today. Artists have played an important role in culture and politics Soviet Union.

    VHUTEMAS - meeting point

The higher artistic and technical workshops, created in 1920 and known throughout the world as VKHUTEMAS, produced a large number of designers and artists who significantly influenced not only Soviet culture, but also left a mark in world art.

In particular, the artists of Kukryniksy, who came here, started their journey from here. different ways and from different places, but with one goal - to learn how to create beauty. Mikhail Kupriyanov and Porfiry Krylov met in 1922 while working on issues of the VKHUTEMAS wall newspaper "Arapotdel". They signed their works with the abbreviation Kukry and Krykup. They were later joined by student recruit Nikolai Sokolov, who had long signed his work as Nix. This is how the famous students appeared, united not only by love for art, but also by a common worldview. Their element was laughter, they subtly noticed humorous features in the surrounding reality, and this became their starting point in cooperation.

    Commonwealth of like-minded people

The artists of Kukryniksy are a unique phenomenon in world culture. Simultaneous work on the works demanded from them a close connection and closeness in their views. They were united by a creative platform - they sought to notice the funny and express it in drawings. Big role V. Mayakovsky played in the formation of the Commonwealth, he embodied their thoughts and moods. His "Windows of Growth Satire" became a real university for cartoonists. The poet also drew attention to an interesting team and invited them to arrange the production of "The Bedbug", later they will create a series of sketches for this work. In this work, the features of their artistic method crystallized, they drew courage, accuracy and topicality from Mayakovsky.

The biography of the team is connected with the creation of a unique phenomenon in the visual arts, it was called "positive satire". The second person to play essential role in the formation of the Kukryniksy, there was Gorky. He not only helped them find work, but also guided them on the right ideological path. It was he who encouraged their interest in politics and helped them understand the party line. Truly satirical works- mocking and caustic. For several decades, from the mid-20s to the end of the 90s, the artists were close friends, and this allowed them to work together.

The artistic method of the Kukryniksy

Artists Kukryniksy were able to create a unique method of working on the work. existed before them, but there were none in which all creative individualities were erased in the name of the collective "I" of the artist. They worked in such a way that the potential of each creator was embodied to the greatest extent in the final work. As a result of close unity, a recognizable satirical style of artists arose, which was most fully realized in posters and caricatures, but is also distinguishable in paintings. They worked on the work in turn, the drawing went around in circles, each one added his own touches to it, and a collective product was obtained.

Kukryniksy have always adhered to two principles: nationality and party spirit. They understood art as a service to the Motherland, and they carried the heroic mood of the era of the 1920s through their entire creative life.

    Milestones of the creative path

Started joint work Kukryniksy as cartoonists in the famous wall newspaper "Arapotdel", which sharply ridiculed cosmopolitans and formalists, putting the party line into practice. Since 1924, they began to engage in illustrations for literary works. They illustrated young writers and even developed such a genre as fine criticism. Maxim Gorky drew attention to unusual illustrators and advised them to draw themes for art more widely from life, and not just from literature. At the end of the 1920s, the cartoons of the Kukryniksy were published in all literary magazines, they became close to many writers. They exposed literary vices: boredom, absurdity, formalism. And today, many of their caricatures have not lost their relevance.

Since 1925, the group has been actively cooperating with the Soviet media, publishing caustic caricatures of social vices there. Gradually, their fame grew, and each reader, opening the newspaper, first looked for these drawings. During this period, their technique is honed, they are especially good at ink drawings, and the caricature, caustic presentation attracts with its atypical sharpness for the Soviet press. Their series, such as "Transport" in the newspaper "Pravda", brought them serious fame. They become the mouthpiece of the era.

In the prewar years, the Kukryniksy found themselves in a new genre - a political poster. During the war years, it becomes a real weapon against the enemy. Kukryniksy, whose posters helped the people of the Soviet Union in the most hard times became a powerful ideological instrument of power. Their poster "We will mercilessly defeat and destroy the enemy!" appeared on the streets of the country in June 1941. They served the Motherland and went through the whole war with soldiers and leaflets. They also worked in the TASS Windows project, which, in the form of a poster, covered the news and supported the morale of the nation. After the war, they received accreditation for the Nuremberg trials and conducted their sarcastic reporting from there. Kukryniksy became real classics Soviet caricature, they were known all over the world, received many professional awards.

The third direction in which the Kukryniksy worked was painting. They wrote genre paintings on historical themes laying the foundations of a new direction in art - socialist realism. During the period of restoration of the country, the Kukryniksy work a lot in the press, are engaged in book graphics, paint pictures. In the 60s they create a large number of illustrations for Russian classics. At the same time, each artist creates independently. In the 80s and 90s, due to their age, the artists worked less, but their creative union did not break up until the end of their lives.

    Significant works of the Kukryniksy

The artists of Kukryniksy were very productive, many wonderful works came out from under their pencil and brush. The most notable were: a series of satirical portraits "The Face of the Enemy", which united expressive possibilities poster and easel painting, the triptych "Old Masters", illustrations for the collected works of Gogol and the works of Gorky, Saltykov-Shchedrin, Ilf and Petrov, as well as numerous posters of the war years. The latter include the “Museum of the Beaten”, “Plan for the Encirclement and Capture of Moscow”, “The Debt in Payment is Red”, as well as the paintings “Tanya”, “The Flight of the Germans from Novgorod”, “The End”.

The last of the “consubstantial Trinity”, from the unique creative team of the Kukryniksy, Nikolai Aleksandrovich Sokolov, passed away. He was the oldest member of the Russian Academy of Arts (since 1947), with dignity carried the honorary title of People's Artist of the USSR, together with Mikhail Vasilyevich Kupriyanov and Porfiry Nikitich Krylov, he was awarded the Lenin and State Prizes. But, it seems, more expensive than many awards was the modest Order of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree, which Kukryniksy was awarded for an unparalleled military-artistic watch that lasted all 1418 days of this global battle of the 20th century. On June 22, 1941, they created the famous poster “We will mercilessly defeat and destroy the enemy!” and completed a more than four-year epic in Nuremberg as correspondents for the newspaper Pravda.
The Kukryniksy were associated with this newspaper for decades common work. They participated in the activities of the pre-war mobile brigades; after the war, their graphic, satirical comments on international events of the Cold War era regularly appeared on the pages of the newspaper.
Satirical journalism is one of the facets creative heritage Kukryniksov. It is multidimensional, varied and sometimes unexpected. They created a cycle of monumental thematic canvases dedicated to the tragic events of the Great Patriotic War, a series of portraits of prominent military leaders and masters of culture, illustrated classical works Russian and world fiction, designed Mayakovsky's "Klop" at the Meyerhold Theater, were fond of puppet action, drew and sculpted caricatures that were brilliant in accuracy ... Their memoirs became a fascinating chronicle of artistic and social Russian life the outgoing century.

The creative feat of the Kukryniksy will not be forgotten. At the initiative of the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Moscow government decided to install a memorial plaque on house #14/16 on Zemlyanoy Val Street in honor of the artists who worked together for more than 60 years. They lived in this building since 1938, next to Samuil Yakovlevich Marshak, who sharpened the Kukryniksy's brilliant drawings with his short but striking lines.

    Kukryniksy
(pseudonym for the first syllables of surnames)
creative team of Soviet graphic artists and painters: Kupriyanov Mikhail Vasilyevich [b. 8 (21) 10.1903, Tetyushi, now the Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic], Krylov Porfiry Nikitich [b. 9 (22) 8.1902, Shchelkunovo village, now Tula region], Nikolay Alexandrovich Sokolov [b. 8(21).7.1903, Moscow]. Studied at the Moscow Vkhutemas-Vkhutein (between 1921 and 1929). Active members of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1947), People's Artists of the USSR (1958). As satirical artists, K. took a leading place in Soviet art and gained worldwide fame. Working together since 1924, K. initially performed mainly caricatures on themes from literary life. The enormous possibilities of K.'s satirical talent were appreciated by M. Gorky, who, upon meeting with them (1931), advised him to embrace life more broadly, to draw on topics both within the country and abroad. Speaking since 1925 in newspapers and magazines (Pravda, Krokodil, etc.), K. worked out in close cooperation with journalists new type caricatures, marked by acute topicality, a devastatingly sarcastic solution to the topic, caricatured by the specificity of types (series: "Transport", ink, 1933-34; "On Rubbish", ink, gouache, etc., 1959-60). big role in patriotic education Soviet people were played by caricatures, posters, and “TASS Windows” created by K. during the Great Patriotic War of 1941–45, combining murderous sarcasm and heroism in symbolically generalized images (“We will mercilessly defeat and destroy the enemy!”, 1941). The post-war satire of K., which castigates warmongers, enemies of peace and socialism (Waiting for War, Indian ink, 1953-57), also has considerable political power. For political cartoons and posters, K. was awarded the State Prize of the USSR (1942) and the Lenin Prize (1965). Since the beginning of the Commonwealth, K. has also been working hard on the caricature.
From the 20s. K. also act as illustrators, referring to works of literature with a deep understanding of the characteristics of the era depicted and the language of the writer. The range of their creativity in this area is very wide - from sharp graphic grotesque to lyrical picturesque images. Among the works illustrated by them: "12 Chairs" (ink, 1933 and 1967) and "The Golden Calf" (ink, colored watercolor, 1971) by Ilf and Petrov, "Lord Golovlyov" and other works by Saltykov-Shchedrin (ink, 1939), "Lady with a Dog" and other works by Chekhov (1940-46; State Prize of the USSR, 1947), "The Life of Klim Samgin" (1933), "Foma Gordeev" (1948-49; State Prize of the USSR, 1950) and "Mother" (1950; State Prize of the USSR, 1951) M. Gorky, "Don Quixote" by Cervantes (1949-52) - all black watercolor.
In easel painting, K. also set himself tasks of great political significance, creatively developing the traditions of Russian realistic art and sometimes using individual techniques of his satirical graphics. They turn to historical subjects (the "Old Masters" series, 1936-37, the Tretyakov Gallery), denounce fascism ["The Flight of the Fascists from Novgorod", 1944-46, the Russian Museum, Leningrad; "The End", 1947-48, State Prize of the USSR, 1949; "Prosecution (War criminals and their defenders at the Nuremberg Trials)", 1967; both are in the Tretyakov Gallery], giving a significant place to the theme of the heroism of the Soviet people during the Great Patriotic War (“Tanya”, 1942-47, Tretyakov Gallery). The working method of K. is unique: the craftsmen achieve a single, "Kukryniks" handwriting, combining personal talents in a collective creative process. They work individually as portrait and landscape painters. They were awarded the Orders of Lenin, the Order of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree and medals. In 1972 P. N. Krylov, and in 1973 N. A. Sokolov was awarded the title of Hero of Socialist Labor.

"IN MY HOUSE NEAR THE GREAT RIVER"
On Krestovaya Street, every house is history. Today our newspaper begins to publish a series of articles about buildings on the main street of the city.

The house, located at Krestovaya, 3, was built in 1845. Then the building was two-story, with a mezzanine (upper mezzanine). The building was built by a native of the city of Yaroslavl, Rybinsk merchant Asaf Vasilyevich Serebryannikov.
In the 1870s, the house was bought by the merchant Pyotr Nikolaevich Rubtsov. He united houses No. 3 and 5 into a single building, over which he also erected a third floor. Therefore, it is no coincidence that at present there is no house number 5 on Krestovaya.
In the 1880s, new owners appeared near the house - the spouses Alexei Dmitrievich and Evgenia Dmitrievna Shemyakins. They were merchants and traded haberdashery goods.
The Shemyakins had three sons and four daughters. Therefore, in 1899, the Shemyakins made two three-story extensions to the house.
With house number 3 is associated with the name of the Hero socialist labor, People's Artist USSR, full member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR, multiple winner of the Lenin and Stalin (State) Prizes of the USSR, member of the creative community of Kukryniksy, honorary citizen of Rybinsk Nikolai Alexandrovich Sokolov (1903 - 2000).
ON THE. Sokolov was born in Moscow. His father was a Moscow merchant, whom the Rybinsk merchant's daughter Maria Alekseevna Shemyakina married. Kolya Sokolov's hobby began in Moscow fine arts. At the age of nine, he first came to Tretyakov Gallery. Struck by the art of the masters, he looked at Serov’s paintings, Surikov’s “The Execution of Streltsy”, Repin’s “They Didn’t Wait” and other masterpieces. It was a holiday!
But Moscow had to leave in the spring of 1920. Famine reigned in the capital. In addition, by this time, the father left the family. Maria Alekseevna decided to go home, to Rybinsk. Parents have allocated housing for their daughter with six children in their house No. 3 on Krestovaya Street so far. In 1923 the house was municipalized.

In 1988, when Nikolai Alexandrovich Sokolov was in the hospital and could not do what he loved, he composed a comic poem “Oh, you are a biography!”. About 1920, the poem says:
    Relatives gave us two rooms
We did not expect such happiness!
In Rybinsk, seventeen-year-old Nikolai Sokolov went to work as a clerk in the Water Transport Administration. I studied at school in the evenings. Not far from my house I saw a sign: "Proletkult Art Studio":
I noticed somehow the studio, and in it
    Fun, wonderful people.
Some paint, while others paint with oils ...
My dream to become an artist has not died out.
In the Studio of Fine Arts Proletkult taught wonderful artist Mikhail Mikhailovich Shcheglov. Nikolai painted views of the corner of his room and the courtyard in the house, showed M.M. Shcheglov, and was accepted into the studio.
The head of the artist's studio was Shcheglov.
Looking at my drawings, he suddenly said:
    - I take it, go to work!
    Decided life - an artist
I should be born in Rybinsk!
Half a century Kukrynisy worked together. The objects of their cartoons were characters from the White Guards to the "new Russians" of the early perestroika era. The texts under their satirical works were written by Demyan Bedny, Samuil Marshak, Sergey Mikhalkov. Kukryniksy illustrated the works of Ilf and Petrov, Saltykov-Shchedrin, Chekhov, A.N. Tolstoy, Gogol.
In addition to graphics, the Kukryniksy worked in painting and small sculpture. They created in china friendly cartoons the great directors Stanislavsky and Meyerhold, the great actors Moskvin and Kachalov, the great composer Prokofiev. In 1937, at the World Exhibition in Paris, these works of the Kukryniksy were awarded a gold medal.
During the Great Patriotic War, the Kukryniksy worked as correspondents for the Pravda newspaper and participated in the publication of the TASS Windows posters. The Kryniksy were invited to the signing of the act of capitulation of Germany and to the trial of fascist criminals in Nuremberg, so that the artists captured these historical events.
The tablecloth on the table, on which the act of surrender was signed, was then cut into squares and distributed to all those present. Your piece of tissue N.A. Sokolov donated to the Rybinsk Museum.

In 1920, Nikolai Sokolov went to Moscow to study at VKhUTEMAS (Higher Artistic and Technical Workshops). Vladimir Andreyevich Favorsky himself, the rector of VKHUTEMAS, liked his work at the drawing exam.
At VKhUTEMAS, Nikolai Sokolov met two students: Mikhail Kupriyanov and Porfiry Krylov. They have already created together and signed their works either Kukry or Krykup - according to the first letters of their surnames. ON THE. Sokolov recalled:
“I really got to know the Kukras only after I achieved the highest happiness: I received permission to move to a student hostel. One fine day, a tenant moved out of our room, designed for four, along with the bed. In the evening, Kupriyanov's head poked his head through the door:
    - They say you have one free place. Right?
We hastily built a kind of bed out of stretchers and canvases, and Ku moved in with us. Began to visit us every day and Kry. Koo didn't have a mattress, instead a sack full of newspapers and old drawings. Periodically, we opened the bag, fluffed up the caked papers, after which it continued to play the role of a mattress for some time. In the process of one of these methods of “cheering up”, I recognized in the drawing that fell out of the bag one of my caricatures, which at one time had not been placed in the wall newspaper. They laughed at the fact that my work was not in vain.
Nix was added to the Kukrams, and the Kukryniksy, unsurpassed masters of caricature, arose.
Nikolai Alexandrovich all his long life maintained a close relationship with Rybinsk. He handed over a large number of works by the Kukryniksy and his own to the city museum.
Hometown Rybinsk should not be forgotten,
Though I rarely have to go there.
But in my house by the great river
Often there are my fellow countrymen.
Every time I rejoice at such a meeting,
It's like meeting my favorite river.
