Game Review:

Might and Magic: Duel of Champions is an online collectible card game in the Might & Magic universe.

The principle of the game is as follows. You are given a deck of fifty to two hundred cards. The deck consists of creature cards and a hero card, fate and event cards, as well as magic spells. Participants make moves one by one. According to the rules, creatures are placed on the battlefield, and thanks to fate cards and spells, you can weaken or strengthen creatures, or deal direct damage to the hero card or creatures. Used fate cards, spells, or slain creatures are sent to the graveyard. If creatures bypass enemy defenses, they can harm the hero himself. Losing occurs when the character's health drops to zero.

You must pay with resources for activating event cards and for introducing the cards themselves into the game. The supply of resources automatically increases by one unit when making a move. Remaining resources are reset to zero and are not carried over to the next turn.

Each hero is affiliated with a specific faction, which provides access to individual schools of magic. Many characters have activated skills. Initially, twenty units of health are given. With the help of the map you will be able to trace the initial levels in the field of fate, magic and power.

Factions in the game Might and Magic Duel of Champions

Cards in Might and Magic Duel of Champions

All game process Duel of Champions built around cards that are combined into decks. Each type of card is responsible for its specific aspect of the game.

This is the key card that determines which cards should be used in the deck. Each hero belongs to a certain faction, and also has a certain number of health points, initial parameters and schools of magic that are available to him. Some of the heroes have a special set of skills. Each deck can only contain one hero card.

All creatures, as well as heroes, belong to a certain faction. In order for a creature to be added to the deck, the faction it belongs to must be neutral or match the hero’s faction. A creature can be summoned onto the battlefield only if the hero has a certain amount of resources.

Spells are magical powers. You will use them during the battle. Spells are divided into three types, which are determined by the type of magic used. These are instantaneous, temporary action and permanent action.

Fortune Card

This is a special type of card that belongs to factions, and not to schools of magic. They can be added to the deck if Fortune’s factions coincide with the hero’s factions, or if the faction is neutral. Fortune cards can make unexpected changes in the process of a duel. For example, there is a card that will force your opponent to deal two cards back to their deck whenever they take a turn.

These cards are similar to magic spells, but their actions consist mainly of manipulating the opponent's cards.

Event Map

In Duel of Champions, these cards act as additional magic spells that are used in battle. Each deck must contain eight event cards.

So, you can compose any deck at your discretion, but at the same time you need to constantly monitor and analyze which cards should be laid out and where, whether you need to spend energy in this moment or it is better to accumulate its reserves.

Game modes

When playing Might and Magic Duel of Champions, you can use five game modes, each of which contains its own characteristics. At the very beginning, you will be able to undergo training, and later you can begin to implement large-scale battles, in which players from all over the world will become opponents.

Training

This mode is only available for beginners and will remain active until you complete it. Here you will begin to fight with a computer opponent without fear for your results and rating. An unsuccessful outcome of the battle will not affect the statistics. After several successful battles, this mode will move into a more complex and responsible one.

Campaign

This mode is a system of single battles with a computer opponent, which are united by a common story line. For successfully completing tasks in this mode you will receive experience, gold, seals and cards. The outcome of the battle, just like in the “Training” mode, does not affect your rating, so you can safely fight and in case of defeat, you have the opportunity to replay the battle again.

Duels

In this mode, you can conduct large-scale battles with other players. As a reward in this mode, you will earn seals, gold and increase your experience level. But the most important reward in this mode will be the ELO rating - a key indicator of your success in the game Might and Magic Duel of Champions.

Tournaments

You can take part not only in duels, but also in a jackpot tournament, and also create your own tournament.

Practice

This mode makes it possible to conduct a training duel with any player or computer.

Combat system in the game Duel of Champions

The main goal of any fight is to reduce the health level of your opponent’s hero to zero. To do this, you must use all the characteristics of creature, spell, fortune, and Event cards.

The game automatically determines who gets the first move - you or your opponent.

At the beginning you need to fold or agree to help the starting hand. As a result, you will have six random new cards from the deck. Only after these actions will the battle begin.

Supply consists of replenishing resources. Actions are determined by the ability to attack.
Visually, the field on which the battle takes place can be divided into two parts. Your opponent's base is on the right, yours is on the left.
Only at first glance it seems that the combat mechanics in the game Duel of Champions are quite complex and confusing. This is why there is a “Training” mode, after completing which you will be completely ready to play.

Game Features

  • With this game element, you can purchase the necessary card by giving away several from your deck in return. You can use the abyss to destroy unnecessary cards and get gold in return. Cards that you decide to destroy are burned forever.
  • Altar of wishes. You can buy the necessary cards using “Jokers” (cards received for in-game achievements).
  • Temporary amplifiers. For success in each battle, you will receive rewards in the form of experience and gold. Even if you lose, if you don't give up immediately, you will receive a small reward. Temporary boosters will increase the experience level and amount of experience. This means that you can buy new items in the store and increase your levels faster. Regardless of the outcome of the duel, the amplifier is valid for five duels.

Game store Duel of Champions

Products purchased in the store will help you diversify your gameplay. The store consists of four departments.

In the "Offers" section you will purchase unique offers, available for a limited time.

The Miscellaneous department will offer you amplifiers and tournament tickets.

"Boosters". We bring to your attention card sets that can strengthen your deck.
"Decks". In this department you can buy complete sets that include a hero card. This means that you can immediately start the game or supplement your base with other factions and cards.

Let's sum it up

There are quite a lot of card strategies in the gaming space, but not all of them are so diverse and exciting. Some of them are too complex and confusing, others, on the contrary, are quite primitive. Might and Magic Duel of Champions- This is an excellent compromise between accessibility and hardrock. The game has not only recognizable, well-known characters, but also understandable and simple rules and a carefully developed rating system. Despite the huge number of cards and features, there is nothing superfluous in the game.

Notes from a veteran of card battles

This material is addressed to that part of the desktop community, those “initiates” who have probably suffered more than others because of their hobby. KKI people, I'm talking about us! Judge for yourself: who else has to spend their hard-earned money in search of the one and only treasured card? Who else hides tons of cardboard from prying eyes, so as not to be branded as a card maniac? I think there is not a person in our ranks who would never dream of collecting all the cards of “Magic: The Gathering” (and their number has long exceeded 20,000). Other board gamers are used to getting everything at once, but do they really know the excitement with which you open a new booster pack in complete ignorance of what it will bring?

Until recently, collectors were more limited in their options than other tabletop enthusiasts. In the world of digital CCGs, there has not been a single worthy alternative to MtG. And now, with the advent of online games, the situation seems to be getting better. In 2005, the “Lords of the Astral” became the first sign, three years later Spectromancer was born. Over the past couple of years, we have continued to sublimate the passion for “gambling card games” through Shadow Era, “Magic The Gathering: Duel of Planeswalkers”, Scrolls (this also includes several simple browsers). Today, the “heavy artillery” in the form of Hearthstone and the not very encouraging SolForge from Richard Garfield are waiting in the wings. But this article will not talk about them.

In 2012, Ubisoft introduced the world to the online card game Might & Magic: Duel of Champions. A game that knows about our hidden and obvious needs and is able to compete with the same “Magic”. A game with great development potential, which from the first seconds can win your heart for a long time...

The essence of the game is the same confrontation between two magicians (in in this case- Heroes) who came together on the battlefield. Everyone recruits a Mighty army (consisting of creatures of the same Faction) into their deck, enlists the support of crushing Magic and does not forget about Luck. In addition to these three starting characteristics, each Hero has his own number of starting lives, knowledge of 1 to 3 possible schools of magic (there are 7 in total in the game), as well as individual feature, so to speak, a personal skill (activated or permanent). For example, the hero Shalan belongs to the Sanctuary faction and masters the magic of Earth and Water.

There is only one hero card, and it determines the faction affiliation of our deck. IN currently There are 6 playable factions available in Duel of Champions. Of course, each has its own unique features.

Inferno in literally burns with napalm, plays aggressively and strives to trample the enemy with evil horned demons with a huge attack. The Alliance of Light, on the contrary, has the lowest attack, but can build an impenetrable defense. Sanctuary: Their warriors can move other people's creatures, exposing them to attack, and also strengthen allies. Rebellious tribes are very fond of aggression, lightning onslaught, and the more of their creatures fall on the battlefield, the stronger and more dangerous the surviving tribesmen can become. Necropolis poisons the enemy, literally deprives them of attack power and loves to suck out lives, which makes the representatives of this faction very “tenacious”. Well, the Academy (appeared in the game on September 26) skillfully avoids damage, increases the level of magic and vigorously saws through the opponent’s deck, forcing them to discard cards.

As in the original Heroes of Might and Magic, the proper placement of creatures on the field is one of the most important tactical features of the game. This enriches the gameplay with its subtleties and allows you to implement original mechanics.

Well, now is the time to sum up and speak out about the strong and weaknesses MMDoC.

Advantages:

  • Extensive map database (about 600).
  • A variety of gaming deck archetypes (aggro, control, combo, mill/discard).
  • Excellent card design (not inferior in level to MtG).
  • There is no need to actively invest real money. The game does not skimp on rewards; gold and experience accumulate quickly. There is a daily reward system. Completing a simple campaign allows you to accumulate a decent amount game currency. In addition, developers sometimes post gift codes, which bring gold or cards.

Flaws:

  • Imbalance among heroes and factions. So, at the moment the weakest is the Alliance of Light, the strongest is Necropolis. Among the heroes, we can note 5-6 of the strongest (Adar-Malik, Damiria, Keltor, etc.), the remaining 80% are clearly inferior to them. As in other CCGs, there is a race for the best cards and strong decks. Ideally, it looks like this: quickly catch up with a crowd of cheap creatures and strangle the enemy’s resistance with tough removal.
  • Lots of useless cards. On high levels(1000 ELO and above) only a few decks are viable. As a result, a certain predictability appears, which does not benefit anyone.
  • No limited formats (sealed and draft). Nowadays, each player strives to build the strongest deck of all the cards he has (essentially this is the constructed format). In sealed and draft, the player's choice is limited given conditions, which would provide greater variety of duels. The developers say that they are already working on this issue, and the emergence of new formats is a matter of the near future.

To summarize: be that as it may, today Duel of Champions is perhaps the best digital implementation of a collectible card game. Join us!

P.S. At the time of writing, a new addition, Forgotten Wars, has been released, and now the game is completely in Russian! (just change the language in the settings).
