“For us, “Jazz Seasons” is a festival where we get aesthetic pleasure from both what we hear and what we see around...

How are our concerts in Gorki different? Great sound. All the ensembles sound amazing there! It’s amazing how nature, alleys, trees, Morozov’s estate creates not only a special atmosphere, but also some kind of acoustic paradise.”, - noted the artistic director of the Festival, the famous saxophonist, People's Artist of Russia Igor Butman.

Headliners of the “Jazz Seasons” were Randy Brecker, John Beasley, Leon “Foster” Thomas, Jonah Nilsson Trio, Ambrose Akinmusire Quintet, Tony Momrell, the Oregon group and the best representatives of the Russian jazz scene - the Moscow Jazz Orchestra, Tina Kuznetsova, Sergei Dolzhenkov Quintet , Alina Rostotskaya, Yuliana Rogacheva, Oleg Akkuratov Trio, Vadim Eilenkrig and his group Eilenkrig Crew, Big Jazz Orchestra of Peter Vostokov, group “Leonid & friends”, Hayk Grigoryan Quintet, Group “Number Pi” and many others.

Christian Scott The New York trumpeter, originally from New Orleans, is one of the most exciting musicians to emerge from the jazz scene in the last few years. His debut CD, Rewind That, was released on Concord Records in 2006 and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. JazzTimes magazine called Christian “the God of the young movement of jazz.” His music is celebrated as an innovative manifesto, centered on taking as many musical forms, cultures and dialects as possible and combining them into one fresh, resonant, creative improvised concept.

In 2017, Christian released a series of albums dedicated to the centenary of the release of the first jazz records. The final album in the series, “The Emancipation Procrastination,” was nominated for a Grammy as “best instrumental album of our time.”

On July 8, Governor of the Moscow Region Andrei Vorobyov visited the IV International Festival “Jazz Seasons” in the Leninsky municipal district, he, together with musician Igor Butman and State Duma deputy Vyacheslav Fetisov, signed soccer balls and presented them to the guests of the festival, the press service of the governor and the regional government reports.

The musical open-air, which traditionally takes place on the territory of the Gorki Leninskiye Museum-Reserve, is organized as part of the governor’s program “Our Moscow Region”. Over two days, more than 6 thousand people visited it, as specified in the material.

“It’s a very good, popular event, four years ago it was organized by Igor Mikhailovich Butman. Lovers of music and art traditionally gather here on these summer days. Both yesterday and today the festival collects. I wish the festival to continue to develop so that it attracts more people. I am sure that Igor Mikhailovich has a lot of creative teams that he supports, and we will see new stars here,” said Andrei Vorobyov, quoted by the press service.

The producer and ideological inspirer of the festival is the famous saxophonist, People's Artist of Russia Igor Butman. At his personal invitation, outstanding jazz musicians traditionally come to Gorki Leninskiye, the material notes.

“I am very glad that the government of the Moscow region and our governor Andrei Yuryevich Vorobyov supported the idea of holding this wonderful festival in Gorki Leninskiye. I was here as a school student on a field trip, and we were talking about what a great idea it would be to have this festival in this place. And for the 4th year in a row, a lot of people come here with their families, walk, watch, go on excursions, listen to great music and enjoy communication,” said Igor Butman, his words are quoted in the message.

As noted in the press release, a broadcast of the World Cup match was organized at the festival. Andrey Vorobyov together with Igor Butman and State Duma deputy Vyacheslav Fetisov “Jazz seasons”.

“The governor’s programmatic approach to everything that happens here, the support of famous people so that they can bring culture to those places that are important for the country is very important. Igor Butman invites the most famous jazz musicians here. This is the very bridge that unites people in order to once again understand and realize that such personal relationships change life for the better. The festival turned Gorki Leninskie into the real one of our country,” the press service quotes Vyacheslav Fetisov.

This year the festival brought together 10 groups from Russia, Armenia, Sweden and the USA, representing a wide variety of jazz styles - from classical to avant-garde. On the first day there was a performance by Swedish vocalist and pianist Jonah Nilsson. He gained popularity in just one night; as part of the group Dirty Loops, he performed several cover versions of hits that collected millions of views on YouTube. Also performing for the audience on Saturday were the group “Leonid & friends”, the US singer Elliott, the quartets of Hayk Grigoryan and Oleg Butman, as well as the Big Jazz Orchestra of Peter Vostokov, as listed in the material.

According to the press service, on the second day of the festival, the ethno-jazz project Van Quartet from Armenia, a young and ambitious team playing independent music, “Number Pi”, a sextet of Ilya Morozov and Victoria Kaunova, as well as a quartet from the Blue Note label took to the stage. Of particular interest was the performance of the winner of two major jazz competitions named after Thelonious Monk and Carmine Caruso, virtuoso trumpeter from the USA Ambrose Akinmusire. This musician has established himself as a master, varying between the worlds of jazz, classical and hip-hop. The festival ended with a concert of the world famous Moscow Jazz Orchestra conducted by Igor Butman.

As noted in the message, in 2018 the Jazz Seasons festival entered the top 10 musical open-airs in Russia.

“This is a non-profit project for us, why do we support it so much within the framework of the governor’s program “Our Moscow Region”? Because the content of the festival, the program itself, is a priori more expensive than tickets. We cannot sell expensive tickets: people come here with families, friends, six or seven people each - it must be affordable. But at the same time, our program is of impeccable quality, and this is the difference from commercial, replicated festivals. Every time, Igor Mikhailovich Butman and his team, which has amazing connections with the jazz world, have the opportunity to invite the brightest musicians to the Moscow region,” said Narmin Shiralieva, adviser to the governor of the Moscow region for culture with the rank of minister, her words are also cited in the material.

The festival also included free master classes on jazz music, painting and pottery. Visitors were able to play mini-football, board games, and take part in quizzes. Games for children, cycling and... were also organized. A competition has also been organized for the best photo on Instagram, the main prize is a soccer ball with the autographs of festival participants, the message says.
