How to get into the art institute. Choosing an art school

The artist paints not what he sees, but what he feels.

Pablo Picasso

There is an opinion that an artist is a brush of the Creator. That is, the talent of the painter is a gift from God, which guides the hand of the artist, painting picture. Perhaps that is the way it is! But one talent is not enough: it must be developed, directed, improved. For this, there are art universities, in which centuries-old knowledge is concentrated on the clarity of lines, the play of colors, and the consistency of style.

Despite the fact that in this profession, as in any other creative profession, few people succeed in becoming professional and successful, competitions for art universities are traditionally high.

When entering an art educational institution, as well as a theater school, you must first prove the presence of a talent that can later prove itself and surprise the world beautiful pictures. In the 17th century, the artist studied for 15 years. Today, education at the university takes place for 5 years, but preparation for admission takes several years. Talented aspiring artists, as a rule, attend art mugs, children's art schools, graduate from specialized lyceums and schools. At art universities, there are art schools or preparatory courses where you can study from 6 months to 2 years.

From the very beginning, you need to decide in which direction you will build your career. Art institutes have several faculties:

  • painting;
  • charts;
  • restoration and technology of painting;
  • sculptures;
  • architecture;
  • animations and multimedia;
  • theory and history of art;
  • design;
  • monumental-decorative and applied art.

When applying to an art institute, an applicant must submit their creative work: drawing and painting. Those who pass this preliminary stage are admitted to the entrance creative examinations, which take place in the workshops of the university. At the second stage, tasks are performed for several days on:

  • graphite pencil drawing (portrait and figure);
  • painting (portrait with hands, made oil paints or watercolor)
  • compositions in any technique to choose from.

And only after these creative competitions the applicant accepts the results of the exam.

In addition to talent and education, an artist also needs such prosaic qualities as hard work, communication skills and the ability to find mutual language with customers, owners of galleries and museums.

Creation can outlive the creator:
The Creator will leave, defeated by nature,
However, the image he captured
Will warm hearts for centuries.
I live in thousands of souls in the hearts
All those who love, and, therefore, I am not dust,
And mortal corruption will not touch me.

Michelangelo

Education received in the capital's art universities is considered very prestigious not only in Russia, but throughout the world. The highest level teaching, set by the founders of educational institutions, and the tradition of Russian art school are still observed.

Among the most prestigious art universities, one can especially highlight:

  • Moscow State Academic Art Institute named after V. I. Surikov; Moscow art-industrial university. S. G. Stroganov;
  • Russian Academy painting, sculpture and architecture by Ilya Glazunov;
  • All-Russian state institute cinematography them. S. A. Gerasimova;
  • St. Petersburg State Academic Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. I. E. Repina.

Hey, hello everyone! Roman is in touch again and today I would like to talk about what kind of professions in which you will need drawing skills in order to plunge into this world of creativity with your head.

This post prompted me to write the fact that I myself came to the idea, like: “I can draw and be creative person", through the "spare course", i.e. without drawing.

Here is how it was...

At the beginning of 2014, I had just returned from the army and decided that I wanted to make my own blackjack site and ... well, I wanted to learn how to draw through the lessons that I translated and published on it.

Unfortunately, or fortunately, but my idea was not successful, and once again I was disappointed in the dream of becoming cool artist and draw popular art. And then, firstly, I wanted to prove to myself that I could earn and exist by doing creative activity, secondly, I thought that I could still enter the “drawing” industry, but not from the front door, but from the back door.

And my decision was to get a job somewhere as a designer, since I knew Photoshop well, but with Corel Draw learned to work in the army. And I got a job in a book publishing house, a place where there was “its own atmosphere” and ... I liked it.

Thus, I “designed” until I again felt a craving for drawing in myself and began to do this business with new force.

What do I want to say with this story? If you want to learn how to draw, become a comics artist, paint pictures or much more, but attempts to go head-on do not work, then try to work in this area in the position that you can. Immerse yourself in the atmosphere, meet creative people, cultivate new skills in yourself, and do what you love.

There are assistants, editors, layout designers, gallery owners, animators and many other specialties that will help you: firstly, gain experience, secondly, immerse yourself in the "world" of your goal, thirdly, meet new people who will always help you if you have similar goals.

Ahem, and now directly to the professions themselves.

Skill Level - Intermediate

Skill Level - High

Skill Level - Beginner

Let's start with those in which, in my opinion, drawing is not particularly necessary, but if you have basic skills and are drawn to creativity and creativity, then there you can snatch your part of the glory.

gallerist- is an expert in the field of fine arts, a profession for those who may not particularly like to draw, but love art very much. He knows a lot about styles, authors, eras, knows how to distinguish an original from a copy, a masterpiece from a shoddy work. A gallery owner can easily organize an exhibition of any level, invite celebrities there, and can convince them to buy the works put up for sale. First of all, this is a person who appreciates art, and not producing it.

You can study for this specialty in almost every university where there is a department of cultural studies or art history. But the most prestigious and respected are:

  • Russian Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (RAZHVIZ).
  • Moscow State University (MSU).
  • Institute of Cultural History (former UNIQ).
  • MGUKI.

Designer (graphic)- V modern society a person who has a good command of graphic packages, is able to make high-quality advertising material, assemble a collage, prepare printing products for printing and knows the laws of color, composition and behavioral factors. Someone might say: “How is it that a designer is not obliged to draw? I have to! ”, No, my dears, he himself worked as a designer and ... there is no smell of drawing there. The skill of a high-quality collage is highly valued, everything is taken from Google or stocks, then assembled into several layouts, from which the customer approves something and it is further refined.

You can study this specialty in many universities, but in fact most designers do not have the appropriate education. They collected their portfolios from the lessons on the Internet, got a job, and there they are already gaining real skills. However, I'm talking about the majority, while top designers are high-class people with specialist diplomas.

In addition to the graphic designer, there are also landscape designers and interior designers in nature, who also do not really need drawing skills for work, but more skills in working with 3D graphics editors.

3D Modeler is a sought-after and rapidly growing specialty in a modern society. The modeler creates three-dimensional models of almost everything that can be imagined in your head: from buildings, equipment and people, to magical and fabulous animals, phenomena and measurements. In most modern games, 3D graphics are used, modelers create entire worlds in which we so love to dive. Also 3D graphics used in most contemporary films.

This is the general name of the profession, since there are many specialties in it, separated by goals: landscape modeler, character modeler, vehicle modeler, etc.

Officially, these professions are taught:

Skill Level - Intermediate

Calligrapher- a person with skill beautiful letter. It may seem that this is not such a “prestigious” profession, but people who can, practically without tools, beautifully portray words are very much appreciated. And besides, the skill of calligraphy can be applied in combination with computer programs and ... well, that's how much popular brands pay for their name to be written not in Arial, but in a beautiful and unique font. And who in the 21st century does fonts are calligraphers... modern calligraphers.

In universities, calligraphy is taught in the specialty of graphic design, however, at the first request, the search engine gives you many options where you can study online, both paid and free.

Design Engineer- a specialty aimed at creating drawings of objects. When designing, their drawing skill is needed more than anywhere else, but there is no need to learn all the possible laws of drawing. A specialist of this profile should have a good imagination, create not “dry” drawings, but translate their ideas into clear, practical schemes that will please the eye.

Cartoonist is an artist specializing in drawing funny and parodic portraits, ironically or sarcastically depicting various events that have caused resonance in society. Yes, you yourself have probably seen more than once how artists sit in squares and parks and draw funny cartoons for denyuzhka. There are many cartoonists, but in order to make enough money on this, you need to become popular and famous, so that the glory of you thunders in all sources, etc.

As a specialty, universities do not teach, however, you can find quite a few lessons and courses on mastering this skill on the net, but still, your desire and perseverance remain the main thing here.

fashion artist- on the one hand, this is a person involved in the creation of sketches new clothes, he comes up with new outfits and even entire collections of clothes, but the scope of the artist-fashion designer also includes the creation of a new concept of clothes in the form of sketches, the search for a design solution for a conceived model, the development of samples of new models and their preparation for industrial production, organization of fashion shows. In general, a lot of things. The profession is very exciting and creative.

  1. Actually a very good article on the subject. Here.

Outliner (aka Inker) One of the two artist professions required to create comics. The contourer processes the images transmitted to him by drawing lines, tracing pencil drawing, corrects minor flaws using either ink for this, or (if it works on a computer) dark colors brushes. The outliner processes all lines of a drawing except text. The profession is not considered quite creative, rather technological.

Unfortunately, I did not find a place where they would teach, or in any case it would be a discipline of one of the specialties.

  1. Useful wikipedia article

Skill level is high.

Here you will draw every single day... unfortunately, or fortunately;)

illustrator is a specialist who creates pictures that convey the meaning of the text. Illustrators can work on books, newspapers, magazines, flyers, and generally anywhere where you need to convey a "message". From many illustrators who have already taken place, you can hear that this profession is difficult, competitive and not very paid (maybe they are lying, who knows...). But most choose this profession because they like to draw, and not for the sake of greed.

I don’t even know what to say on the topic of what needs to be done “in order to become a good illustrator"... probably plow like damn :)

They teach as an illustrator both in many universities and on the Internet great amount courses and teaching materials. Google help!

Graphic artist- a specialist working in only one contrasting color and, as a rule, this color is black. The graphic artist mostly uses ink or pencil for his work. Just like an illustrator, a graphic artist is a professional for illustrating books, he can work with the fonts and text of the book. When working in a publishing house, a graphic artist usually does everything related to graphics, he is a designer, a layout designer, and an illustrator here ... the main thing is that everything is well paid :)

Where can I study for the specialty "Graphics":

  • Moscow State University print them. Ivan Fedorov
  • Russian State Specialized Academy of Arts

painter- a specialist who creates paintings from nature. A painter can paint portraits, buildings, nature, and in general, whatever he sees, he draws. In my opinion (and this is pure IMHO), all artists are obliged to painters for the glory of eternally hungry, but creative individuals. In today's society, painting is valued only, sorry for the pun, by connoisseurs. Paintings tend to be bought by people who can afford it, not by people who would like to. beautiful picture fun in the hallway... there are printers for that :) Painting is not a profession, not a job, it's a vocation.

  • State Academy Slavic culture

copy artist- a specialist who creates copies of paintings. Copyists in Lately enjoy in great demand, because many people want to see Da Vinci's Mona Lisa on their wall, but not everyone is able to pay for it, and the work of a copyist may not be the cheapest, but certainly cheaper than buying the original. There is very little information about this profession on the Internet, but we can say that this is one of the varieties of the artist-painter.

Restoration artist- a specialist who restores damaged paintings. Restorers can work in various techniques and with various materials, from paintings to icons. Since works of art are not eternal, and sometimes they are stored in not the most appropriate conditions, the specialty of the restorer is in rather high demand, however, there is such a great demand from a specialist.

The duties of the restorer include not only “drawing”, but also a thorough and comprehensive study of the restoration object, the development of a restoration methodology, the selection of materials, and documentation during the restoration work.

Portrait painter— a specialist who creates paintings with portraits of people. I have already mentioned that a painter can paint portraits, but he, as they say, "just a little and nothing as it should", the portrait painter devotes himself entirely to drawing portraits and achieves in this high skill.

They do not teach to be a portrait painter, but study, everyone masters this art by trial and error.

Cartoonist, animator- a specialist responsible for the creation of animated films and cartoons. An animator is the general name for the activity of a specialist in creating cartoons, while the animators themselves are divided into:

  • Phase artist (storyboard artist) - draws phases between different states of scenes and cartoon characters.
  • Character Artist - Creates unique image cartoon character and accompanies the further development and use of this character in animation.
  • Production designer - main artist in production animated film, defines general style future work and supervises its production.
  • Rendering Artist - creates clean shots for final use in the film based on existing developments.

There is also: a contour painter, a background painter.

  1. Again, useful detailed material

colorist One of the two artist professions required to create comics. The colorist is responsible for adding color to black and white picture. Before the advent of software graphics packages, colorists used to color comics, cartoons, films, advertisements by hand, using traditional means. visual arts. With the advent of powerful computers and programs, this profession gradually began to be associated with computer image processing.

Separately, the colorist is not taught, this knowledge is either taught as a standard discipline in most specialties or studied independently in the process of using various tools, of which there are now many.

  1. Useful wikipedia article

Comicist- a specialist who creates comics. I have already mentioned two professions that are aimed at creating a comic book, a “comic artist” combines not only an inker and a colorist, but also a screenwriter, director, director and many other specialties that may be useful to him when creating a comic book.

As such, the profession of a comic artist in Russia has not yet been formed, yes, there are people who draw comics, earn money on it, and this becomes a matter of life, but no one has a special education as a comic artist. To be honest, I don’t know if there are such graduates in the West, but the fact that anyone can become a comic artist is an unambiguous fact. The main thing here is not to learn how to draw, but to learn how to present your story so that readers would like it.

Well, in general, this whole blog is built around mastering - these are professions, so don't forget to subscribe to updates and learn with me :)

game artist- This general concept unifying a large number of specialties related to the creation of digital graphics and its use in the production of games. Game industry V last years is rapidly gaining momentum in terms of the number of games produced per year, this includes all mobile games and games in in social networks.

Specialty "game artist" (character artists, concepts, game designers, artists environment, visual effects artists, etc.) are in high demand among younger generation worldwide.

You can train as a "game artist" in:

  • Center computer graphics Render.ru
  • Distance Learning Center Render.ru
  • Moscow State University of Design and Technology
  • School of computer graphics Scream school
  • RealTime game design course /school/

Phew! That's probably all that I would like to consecrate in this article. Of course, behind the scenes (in drafts) there are still about a dozen professions and specialties that are somehow connected with drawing and graphics production, but ... not this time, and it turned out to be a bit long.

By the way, if thanks to this list you have decided on your future profession and decided where you will go, then there is a service specially for students that does their work for the students. Check it out and use it for your health, "get educated" XD

Listen, if you think that I forgot something, well, maybe some cool specialty or profession, write about it in the comments so that I can add it to the article ... let's make a HUGE guide to professions together :)

That's all for today, all creative mood friends!

How do graduates of art universities live?

Publication date 31.10.2013

Member of the Union of Artists Vladimir MIKHAILOV, except that the artist is a master artistic word. For example, you ask him about how he worked part-time as a student at the Academy of Arts, and Vladimir answers something like this:

- The only year of constant income was 2004, when in the second year my friend and I rented a workshop on Repin Street. We lived there, worked there, and met friends. Then one of my comrades recruited several people who wanted to learn to draw from me. As already with a sort of professional, albeit a beginner. And so the students came to me - they liked it very much. I only taught them to draw with a pencil. During the year they went twice a week. Each paid 50 rubles per lesson. When five people came, I accordingly received 250 rubles. All these were adults who studied just for themselves. Lenya, for example, was older than me. One student was even from Taiwan. She commissioned a portrait for me. Which I never wrote to her...

If Vladimir is not stopped, then he will continue to make a sketch on a given topic, supplementing it with new touches - branches, digressions, clarifications. Ask new question You can only interrupt the artist. But then the same story will repeat itself. Because Vladimir is a person, not to mention the fact that he is very erudite and eloquent, very addicted. Actually, he became an artist because he once became interested in drawing. Here is how it was…

Suddenly, the eleventh grade came. And with him the question: what to do after school? In addition to good academic performance, Volodya has various hobbies in his luggage: history, theater, sports, drawing, literature ... The choice of a further path, as usually happens in such a situation, was decided by chance. The family remembered that there is such an institute named after Herzen (in which my mother once studied). And it has an art-graphic faculty. And why not go there?

Thoughts about being an artist, Volodya, as he claims, was not in sight. But since he was then carried away by the idea of becoming an artist-teacher, he prepared himself for several months of serious studies with teachers. And he did. Well, I studied. As usual, with enthusiasm.

But in the fourth year, it suddenly deafened: “What will I do after graduation?! I don't want to be an art teacher! And the university is pedagogical. A great variety of artistic and arts and crafts subjects were taught there. At a level that is more than sufficient for a school teacher. And yet falls short of the level of the artist.

“Everything was fine with me,” Vladimir recalls. - I even went to the red diploma. But suddenly there was a crisis. What did I spend four years on?! What will I do next?.. I could not become an artist yet. Yes, and still did not want ... I fell into a real depression. Friends, seeing my condition, dragged me to preparatory courses at the Academy of Arts. Repin. And in three months of hard work they brought me back to life.

Vladimir left the institute. Herzen and entered the department of restoration at the Academy of Arts. True, the points were only enough for a paid place. Money troubles began.

- Education cost then 17 thousand rubles a year - a lot of money for our family, - Vladimir recalls. – And then a family friend said: “I will help, I will buy your work!” And he bought my copy of the painting "The Thrush Family". In fact, it was, of course, patronage. I also went to work as a salesman for music discs and cassettes. He took another job to the sellers on Nevsky. And thanks to all this together, we managed to pay for the education. But it was not possible to study further for a fee ...

Therefore, a year later, Vladimir again handed over entrance exams. Passed successfully. And again began to study in the first year - now for free. And after the second year, that is, after seven years of study at higher art educational institutions, Mikhailov felt the need to move to the department easel painting i.e. become an artist. And only four years later (the course of higher education at the Academy of Arts is not 5, but 6 years) he finally became one - having brilliantly defended his diploma.

How do graduates of higher art educational institutions live?

According to my interlocutor, they can be divided into several conditional categories.

Category one. These are people who burn out professionally or cannot compete. They go to related professions- such as design. In very rare cases, they change the scope of activity altogether.

The second category is graduates who remain to teach: either at their own university or at another. They teach for ridiculous money - it can be only a few thousand rubles. But at the same time they get into a structure where they have connections, status, the opportunity to exhibit their works and, accordingly, sell them.

... It is difficult to talk about the earnings of artists, but you can

- My first serious earnings occurred under the following circumstances, - Vladimir recalls. – As a student at the Academy, I painted a copy of one of Rubens' paintings in the Hermitage. A Belgian tourist came up to me and offered money. I say, "This is an educational copy, it is not for sale." But the Belgian was persistent. As a result, already at home, from my educational copy, I also wrote a copy for the customer. And he bought it from me for 1500 euros. And now my most expensive work, which I wrote in a month, was bought for 187 thousand rubles.

One of the most important and exciting moments in the life of every person is the choice of his future favorite profession. Therefore, many schoolchildren think about where to go further to study after graduation long before the last school bell, exams and prom. No less than the children themselves, the issue of obtaining a higher or secondary specialized education worries their parents, because they probably know from their own experience how important right choice. It has long been proven that in the case of an incorrect choice of the direction of study and the educational institution itself, the child may lose interest in learning as such, and subsequently any desire to further master the profession may disappear altogether.

Many children from the very early childhood make plans and dream of growing up as soon as possible, becoming self-reliant and independent, starting a family and finding a job they love. The first independent decision is the choice of your future specialty. Where can you go to study after high school, what points to pay attention to when choosing a university?

Where to go to study after graduating from high school

Before making a final decision on where to go to study after graduating from high school, you need to think carefully and weigh the pros and cons, especially if there are several options and there are doubts about which university to choose. It is important to understand that a lot depends on this very first independent decision in life.

For one person, making the right decision is easy and quick, while for another, it will take a lot of time to finally choose something specific. Experts recommend listening to yourself, to your "I", to analyze your interests, inclinations and preferences. Of course, it's best to favorite hobby grew into permanent activity, because only in this case the work will bring real pleasure, inspire to achieve new heights. At work, a person spends most of his free time, and if this work is a burden and does not bring any satisfaction, then sooner or later it will become hated.

If you choose your own future profession well, it doesn’t work, you can pass special tests for professional suitability. In addition, a psychologist can help to clarify the “situation” significantly, who will competently lead you to accept right decision. The most important thing is to approach the decision thoughtfully and not be led by the opinions of friends.

Where to go to study after secondary school for girls and boys

Every modern man today understands that without education it is difficult to achieve anything significant in life. That is why many girls and boys begin to worry in advance about where they will go to study after graduation. For each person, the process of choosing a profession is strictly individual and occurs at different times.

Some decide to leave the walls of the school immediately after the end of the 9th grade and continue to acquire knowledge in vocational schools, technical schools and colleges. In these educational institutions, boys can learn a lot useful professions, for example, the profession of a locksmith or a painter-plasterer. Do not know where to go to study after school for a girl? In vocational schools, you can get the profession of a pastry chef, hairdresser, manicurist, etc. Such a specialized secondary education will be an excellent initial base, having which you can confidently plan your later life. If you wish, you can continue your studies at the university.

Most of the children leave school after the end of the 9th grade, but there are those who continue their education in high school 2 more years and only then face the problem of choosing a profession. Former 11th graders no longer choose vocational schools, but only universities, occasionally technical schools and colleges, if these educational institutions have programs for teaching children after 11 grades.

Everything here is purely individual and the choice will depend on the personal preferences of the student and the availability of educational institutions in the city (or on the willingness to study in another city). Which university to enter - medical, pedagogical, economic and agricultural, depends on the desire and personal preferences of the graduate, as well as on the financial capabilities of the parents, since, unfortunately, to get a free higher education nowadays it is not so easy.

Where to go to study for a girl after art and music school

Many children, in addition to studying in general education schools, are simultaneously involved in various sections and circles, for example, they want to go to art school. Many parents encourage the desire of their child to be creative, while they do not understand at all where to go to study after graduating from art school and how to turn such a child's hobby into a favorite profession. The ability to draw and love for this process is given to the child from above, and if there is a "God's spark" in him, then nothing can calm it down and put it out.

Where should a girl go to study after art school? In fact, there are many options. Entering the modern creative "alma-mater", applicants-artists can receive several specialties directly related to "arts" in various manifestations. The most popular are the following directions:

  • art;
  • arts and crafts;
  • restoration of works of art;
  • design;
  • photography art.

As in any technical, pedagogical and economic universities, when entering the Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture or the Institute of Decorative and Applied Arts, applicants will have to pass entrance exams.

Children not only love to draw and create, very often they sing and dance with great pleasure, study at a music school and dream of making these talents their favorite profession. Where to go to study after music school to continue the development of these abilities of the child and turn a hobby into a favorite thing? For those who love to sing and dance the best option continue their education in this area will become higher School of Music or the University of Culture and Arts, where you can get a variety of creative specialties.

Where can you go to study after remedial school

Unfortunately, some children develop differently than most of their peers - they are a little behind in development. Therefore, they simply cannot receive knowledge on an equal basis with everyone else. There may be several reasons for such a lag in development, for example, existing diseases are often to blame nervous system child, various mental disorders, congenital developmental anomalies or living in poor living and social conditions.

To educate such children on a par with ordinary educational institutions for healthy children without any deviations, special correctional general education boarding schools have been created. In such institutions, children are taught by specialists who take into account the developmental characteristics of such children and their diagnoses.

The question of where to go to study after remedial school more worried about parents who understand that in modern society they are often biased towards such special graduates. However, do not think that there is no way out of that situation. After graduating from a correctional school, a graduate has two main options for further education:

  • Studying at night school for the purpose of obtaining a certificate of secondary education, after which examinations are taken by an independent commission. After receiving a certificate, you can continue your education in almost any vocational school or technical school;
  • Education in a college or technical school in which there is a correctional training group (KRO). In this group, special children receive quality primary vocational education. The thing is that after the child graduates from a special correctional school, he receives a Certificate of Education, but not the usual certificate of secondary education as in ordinary schools. Therefore, they will not be able to enter the regular college group. At the end of the education, the child is issued a certificate of acquisition of a certain profession, and not of secondary education.

It is recommended to decide where exactly to go to study after graduating from a special correctional school together with teachers and a psychologist who will be able to assess the child’s abilities more adequately than a parent.
