Somnambulism, sleepwalking or sleepwalking is a disorder in which a person performs unconscious actions. He can just sit on the bed, or he can do something complicated and very strange: for example, go outside and invite a passerby to have sex. At the same time, the sleepwalker's eyes are open, and he can even answer questions. But when he wakes up, he doesn't remember anything.

Why is this happening?


Why the brain gives the sleeper such commands is not exactly known. Previously, scientists believed that sleepwalkers do what they are dreaming of at that moment. But then Italian researchers found that somnambulism occurs, the brain falls into a paradoxical state: some parts of it are awake, while others are deep. At this time, the muscles are in good shape, and the person does not see dreams. The imbalance lasts for about 90 minutes. He probably causes bouts of sleepwalking.

Why do some people get this condition and others don't?

Somnambulism is inherited. If both parents have it, there is a 45-60% chance that the child will also sleepwalk. And a lot depends on the character: excitable and emotional people are more likely to suffer from sleepwalking.

In children, somnambulism is associated with the characteristics of growing up: an overly active endocrine system strains the still not fully developed nervous system. It goes away with age.

Surely you have heard the statement that you should not wake up sleepwalkers who walk at night, since such an action can lead to dangerous consequences. But is it really so?

Why do superstitions forbid waking sleepwalkers?

In ancient times and in the Middle Ages, when medicine was very poorly developed, sleepwalking was explained:

  • and as a sign of madness,
  • and as a result of the presence of evil spirits,
  • and as a divine rebirth of man.

In this regard, people were afraid to approach sleepwalkers, fearing that they would suffer the same fate. Also, sleepwalking was associated with the influence of the full moon (hence the name), but later scientists refuted this theory.

To limit their communication with a person suffering from sleepwalking, he was tied to a bed, a basin of cold water was placed near it, or a wet rug was placed. All these actions were aimed at waking up the person and preventing him from walking around at night in a strange state.

The ban on waking such people was explained by a number of negative consequences. It was believed that during awakening, a lunatic might even die or, being under the influence of evil forces, attack others.

Does modern medicine recognize sleepwalking?

According to science, sleepwalking is correctly called somnambulism, and it should be understood as only one type of sleep disorder. It occurs in the deep stage of non-REM sleep and can last for 30 seconds or even 30 minutes. But it happens that people walk at night in a state of somnambulism for several hours in a row.

From the point of view of physiology, somnambulism is an incomplete awakening, when one part of the brain wakes up, while the other continues to be in a sleeping state. Therefore, all the actions that sleepwalkers carry out are usually unconscious and not always rational (for example, sometimes they crawl out onto the roofs of houses, exposing themselves to mortal danger).

What do sleepwalkers do in their sleep?

In a state of somnambulism, a person usually calmly moves around the premises with open eyes and an eerie, frozen look.

Contrary to popular belief, sleepwalkers do not walk around with their arms outstretched in front of them like zombies, but they can perform different actions:

  • dress;
  • visit the toilet;
  • cook and eat;
  • to shift or carry things;
  • to go out;
  • get behind the wheel of a car and drive.

However, people who sleepwalk usually do not enter into social contacts, they may not even notice that someone else is in the room. Only in rare cases, they can respond to the appeal with unintelligible mutterings or simple short phrases.

The next morning after awakening, the lunatic usually does not remember that he took night walks, although he may feel tired and wonder why he is in different clothes or where the mud came from on his shoes.

What can cause somnambulism?

It is worth noting that sleepwalking is not common. It affects only 2% of the population, most of which are children. With age, episodes of manifestation of somnambulism become less frequent or disappear altogether. In the elderly, they practically do not appear.

Among the reasons why people walk in their sleep, doctors call heredity, as well as:

  • immaturity of the nervous system (relevant for childhood);
  • nervous excitement;
  • excessive physical and mental fatigue;
  • the presence of external stimuli that do not allow you to fall into a deep sleep;
  • diseases (Parkinson's disease, breathing problems, restless leg syndrome, insomnia, migraines, arrhythmias, flu or colds accompanied by fever);
  • cyclical changes in women (period of menstruation, pregnancy);
  • alcohol or drug intoxication;
  • individual reaction of the nervous system to taking certain drugs (antidepressants, tranquilizers);
  • mental disorders (more often observed in adults).

But since even the presence of all of these factors does not necessarily provoke somnambulism, there is still no exact answer why it occurs.

How to wake up a sleepwalker?

Doctors advise waking people in a sleepwalking state as gently and calmly as possible, since part of their brain is in a deep sleep stage at this time, and after waking up they may experience fright or a temporary cognitive impairment (sleep inertia).

If you wake up a sleepwalker suddenly or abruptly, he will be discouraged and will not immediately come to his senses (his state will resemble awakening from an alarm clock set at an unusual time, when there is no awareness of what is happening). Therefore, if there is such an opportunity, it is better to try to take him back to the room as calmly as possible and put him to bed.

But if you still need to wake up a sleepwalker walking at night, follow 3 rules:

  1. Speak to the person in a state of somnambulism in the most quiet and calm voice. Harsh sounds can frighten him or even lead to a heart attack.
  2. Try to touch the sleepwalker as carefully as possible, do not shake him and do not be on the cheeks. If he wakes up, he can evaluate this as aggression and rush to the attack.
  3. If you can't wake him up, try to put him to bed or any other convenient place. When the person goes back to normal sleep, try waking up again.

Trying to help the sleepwalker wake up, in no case do not use basins of water and other folk methods. All this can scare the sleepwalker to death and lead to injuries.

Why can't the "journeys" of lunatics be ignored?

Do not ignore the manifestations of sleepwalking in yourself and your loved ones, as night walks can cause falls and serious injuries. People who sleepwalk may even leave the house and go in an unknown direction, after which they have to be searched for a long time.

To protect a person suffering from sleepwalking, it is recommended:

  • remove all sharp and potentially dangerous objects from the room where he sleeps, including pens, knives and guns, carpets and randomly lying wires;
  • every evening, lock the room in which the lunatic sleeps, or install a special alarm on the door that will wake him up;
  • allocate a bedroom on the ground floor for the sleepwalker to eliminate the possibility of using the stairs;
  • turn off water and gas at night so that the lunatic does not open the taps and turn on the gas stove;
  • turn off all household appliances so that the sleepwalker cannot use them (microwave, toaster);
  • install bars on the windows of the house so that the sleepwalker does not jump out of the window.

If somnambulism torments you every night and does not allow you to sleep, you should contact a therapist or neurologist. Currently, there is no single effective treatment for this sleep disorder, but doctors will be able to prescribe an additional examination for the patient and find out the possible causes of this problem.

If there is a suspicion that psychological problems are the cause of somnambulism, visit a psychologist or psychiatrist.

Prevention of somnambulism

If you want to prevent someone close to you from sleeping, monitor them for a week. You need to find out as accurately as possible when he starts walking, and on subsequent nights wake him up 15 minutes before this moment (on your own or with the help of an alarm clock).

But keep in mind that due to nighttime awakenings, a person can feel extremely tired and irritated. This method also does not exclude the manifestations of sleepwalking in other periods of the night.

You can also try to reduce the likelihood of sleepwalking with an integrated approach, which requires:

  1. Organize a comfortable place to sleep.
  2. Organize a stable regime of day and night, go to bed at the same time.
  3. Ventilate your bedroom regularly.
  4. Before going to bed, conduct soothing rituals: taking a warm bath, reading a book, using aromatic lamps.
  5. Eliminate the influence of external stimuli (light, sounds, cold, heat, thirst, hunger, desire to visit the toilet).
  6. Use all available methods of dealing with stress (change of activity, sports, massage).

But how effective these methods will be depends only on the individual characteristics of the person.
