"Poem A. A

The poem was created under the impression of one musical evening with friends, the singing of T.A. Kuzminskaya-Bers (Tanya Bers, the main prototype of Natasha Rostova in War and Peace, was a wonderful musician and singer; in any case, readers “hear” echoes of her singing in some episodes of Tolstoy’s novel and in Fet’s poems).

The poem is written in iambic six-foot, quatrains, with alternating feminine and masculine rhymes. Long lines, with an abundance of vocalisms (“You sang until dawn, exhausted from tears ...”), sound drawn out, as if they were being sung. The beginning is very expressive: “The night shone” is an oxymoron (after all, the night is dark, black), and it is emphasized by inversion (the predicate is ahead of the subject). This is an extraordinary night, festive, bright - not from artificial lights, but from the moon. Living room - continuation of the garden:

The night shone. The garden was full of moonlight. lay
Beams at our feet in a living room with no lights.
The piano was all open, and the strings in it were trembling,
Like our hearts for your song.

An open piano, trembling strings, open hearts - the metaphorical meaning of words clearly replaces the nominative one, the piano also has a soul, a heart.

The lyrical "you" of the poem is, to use the expression H.H. Strakhova, “transformed personality” (like the lyrical “I”). The life situation is translated into a lofty, conditional, lyrical plan (the difference between the real situation and the artistic world is well conveyed by Tolstoy's playful remark, who read the text aloud: “Having reached the last line:“ Love you, hug and cry over you, ”he made us all laugh: "These verses are beautiful," he said, "but why does he want to hug Tanya? A married man..."). The lyrical heroine is the earthly embodiment of the Beauty of life, its high “sound”. The “sound” here is symbolic: it is important not just to live, but to live as on this night, to live “without dropping a sound”, and this already applies to the lyrical “I”. And the motive of suffering, tears, crying, sobbing sharpens the sense of life and beauty:

You sang until dawn, exhausted from tears,
That you are alone - love, that there is no other love,
And so I wanted to live, so that, without dropping a sound,
Love you, hug and cry over you.

There is another theme in the poem that is very dear to the late Fet - time and its overcoming (the original title is “Again”):

And many years have passed, languid and boring,
And in the silence of the night I hear your voice again,
And blows, as then, in these sonorous sighs,
That you are alone - all life, that you are alone - love.

Time is psychologized: the moments of true being are highlighted, there are few of them, in contrast to the “tedious and boring” years. The connection of these moments is shaded by anaphora, epiphora and other types of repetitions.

Literature, and even its lyrical kind, cannot directly convey singing, music, it has a different “language”. But it is precisely literature that can convey how music and singing affect the listener.

Composition

The poetry of Afanasy Afanasyevich Fet (Shenshin) is one of the recognized pinnacles of Russian lyrics. Fet is one of the most widely read poets. In the personality of the poet, two completely different people miraculously came together: a coarsened practitioner who lived a hard life and an inspired, tireless singer of love and beauty. Fet's poetry is musical. Many of his poems are written in the tradition of romance. And the poem that will be discussed in this work is no exception. “The night shone. The garden was full of moonlight. They lay ... ”- a romance popular in the time of the poet, set to music. Thematically, Fet's lyrics are limited by the beauty of nature and female love, but the themes in his works do not play a significant role. Fet's poems are collections of incredibly expressive images.
The poem “The night shone, the garden was full of the moon. They lay...” is written about Tatyana Bers (married Kuzminskaya), sister of Sofya Andreevna Tolstaya. Fet heard Tatyana Bers singing one evening and told her: "When you sing, words fly on wings." Fascinated by inspired singing, the poet created his own poem, very lyrical, expressive and tender:
The night was shining, the garden was full of moonlight. Rays lay at our feet in a living room without lights. The piano was all open, and the strings in it were trembling, Like our hearts for your song.
This poem is remarkable for its surprisingly gentle rhythm and inspirational, subtle and precise images. Fet's accuracy and attention to detail is his undoubted talent. This poem, like all of Fet's poetry, is characterized by sound writing. Let's look at the first stanza. Soft, iridescent and as if flowing “l” prevail here: “the night was shining”, “the garden was full of the moon”, “beams lay ...”, after which there is a transition to the rolls of “r”: “the piano ... is open” , "strings..., trembled". There is a transition from smoothness to an increase in emotional tension. The amazing ability to write with sounds gives Fet's poems such a musical sound.
The poem is based on images of the night, the moon and the piano. Darkness, light and music - this is the basis of this work. The image of the singer, her voice comes to the background. In this poem, one feels the unity of man with the world around him.
A moonlit night, a garden are inconceivable without a piano and the singer's voice. Just as in other conditions, that Tatyana Bers, whom the poet admired, would no longer exist. Fet's amazingly figurative poems fascinate with their game, their colors and precisely chosen words.
In Fet, in this poem, nature coexists with feelings: “Love you, hug and cry over you.” The quiet picture of the night garden is replaced by a contrasting image - a storm in the poet's soul: "The piano was all open ...". The poem is built on opposition. "Tedious and boring" life is opposed to "burning flour of the heart." The purpose of life for the poet is in a single impulse of the soul. In this work, the impetus for a spiritual storm was the singing of Tatyana Bers. In this poem, as in all lyrics, Fet creates his own world - a world of love, beauty and contrast - a quiet, clear nature with mental anguish.
I would like to say that the poem “The night shone. The garden was full of moonlight, They lay...” strikes with its purity and penetration. His lines are permeated with admiration, admiration and the poet's passion for his world, the world of creativity, and everything that contributes to the fusion of creativity with reality, the birth of new poems. It seems to me that this poem will not leave anyone indifferent, it is able to penetrate the heart and touch the most hidden strings in the soul.

The poet Afanasy Fet is an unsurpassed lyricist, whose works surprisingly accurately convey the feelings experienced by the author and create an unusually romantic atmosphere. True, the poet's youthful poems are devoid of secret sadness inspired by the tragic death of Maria Lazich. Fet was in love with this girl from an impoverished noble family, but refused to marry her due to financial difficulties. Subsequently, having regained his title and family estate, and also successfully married the rich merchant daughter of Maria Botkina, the poet reproached himself for having lost love, having acquired wealth.

The poem “The night shone. The garden was full of moon ... ”, written in 1877, when the poet was already in his sixties, is a work of remembrance dedicated to one of the brightest and happiest periods in Fet’s life. He was young and in love, enjoying life in the company of a girl who shared his feelings. And the memory of these romantic dates formed the basis of a poem filled with joy and peace, which, nevertheless, are seasoned with a sharp sense of bitterness and the realization that it is already impossible to return anything.

The first lines of the poem take readers to an old mansion, immersed in darkness. Only moonlight lies at the feet of two people who are in the living room. From it come the sounds of the piano and a gentle female voice that sings about love. “You sang until dawn, exhausted in tears,” the poet notes. Apparently, this was the last night he spent with Maria Lazich, saying goodbye to his beloved, but not suspecting that in less than a month she would leave his life forever, remaining only in his memory. However, at the moment of parting, the poet “so wanted to live, so that, without dropping a sound, to love you, hug and cry over you.”

Fet did not yet realize that by abandoning his beloved, he would forever change his life, which from now on would be deprived of ordinary human happiness. Therefore, the poet admits that "many years have passed, tedious and boring." But the memories of the lost love are becoming sharper and more painful every year, the author is no longer happy with the financial well-being, to which he so aspired, and for which he betrayed the one that, as it turned out, was dearer to him than all earthly blessings. And now, after a quarter of a century, it seems to the poet that he again hears the singing of his beloved, and the enchanting sounds of her voice seem to return the author to the past, where "there are no insults to fate and a heart of burning torment."

Afanasy Fet, embarking on a journey through the waves of his memory, does not want to return to a reality that frightens him, cold and gloomy. In his family, he feels infinitely lonely and doomed to a joyless old age. Therefore, he really wants to have no other goal in life, “as soon as believing in sobbing sounds, love you, hug and cry over you!”. But these dreams are not destined to come true, since Maria Lazich has been resting in a non-village cemetery for almost 30 years. The poet never dared to visit her grave even once in his entire life, believing that he was indirectly involved in the death of his beloved. And it is precisely this feeling of guilt that explains the repeated repetition of the word “cry” in the poem. This is the only thing that remains for the poet, who has realized what exactly he has lost in his life, and who understands that even all the treasures of the world are not able to return him to the past and allow him to correct the mistake made, which played a fatal role in the life of the poet. His destiny is to indulge in memories that give joy and, at the same time, cause unbearable mental pain, which fills the poem “The night shone. The garden was full of moon.”

Analysis of Fet's poem “The night shone. The garden was full of moon

One of the best works created by the great lyricist Afanasy Fet is “The night was shining, the garden was full of moon”. This poem was written already at the end of the poet's life and was dedicated to the happiest period in his life.

One of the refined lyric poets of the 19th century is Fet. “The night shone” is a poem that refers to the late stage of the creative path of this author. It should be said that, despite the large number of touching and sad works that the great Russian romantic created, he was a rather businesslike and tenacious person in life. Poetic creativity for Fet was a saving means to escape from the hustle and bustle of life. But whose image is present in the work "The Night Shone"? Fet verse, according to critics and biographers, dedicated to the early deceased Maria Lazich.

Maria Lazic

She was the daughter of a small landowner. He is an officer, not devoid of romance. Perhaps fate brought them together at the wrong time. This acquaintance would have happened a little later, the girl's life would not have ended tragically. And in Russian culture there would be no great lyricist. For the rest of his life, the lieutenant remembered the last meeting with Maria, when they were in the spacious living room, she played the piano, and the night shone outside the window. Fet wrote this verse many years after the memorable evening.

The young officer fell in love with the girl at first sight, but was not going to marry. Financial difficulties and the desire to return the title of nobility were stronger than love. Some critics believe that the poet later dedicated most of the works to Maria Lazich. The pinnacle of his lyrics is "The night shone". Fet, whose analysis of his work became the subject of a large number of literary articles, reproached himself all his life for the weakness he showed in his youth. Repentance formed the basis of the poem.

"Beams at our feet..."

In the first quatrain, Fet speaks of the last evening with Mary. “The night shone…” - in these lines he is transferred to the atmosphere of the mansion. Maria Lazich was a musically gifted girl. Personally, Fet himself wrote music for her, repeatedly asking her to play something from the works of this composer.

At the first meeting, Maria told Fet that her heart was given to another. But in reality, she had long been in love with the poet and his poems. In one of the letters, Fet told his friend that he had met a girl who was perhaps the only one with whom he could live happily all his life.

"To love you and cry over you"

There were many quiet romantic evenings. The house of Mary's father was distinguished by hospitality. It was not uncommon to meet young officers here. But Fet and Lazich behaved somehow apart, quite rarely participating in the general fun. He never told her about his feelings. Fet expressed his love only in verse. “The night shone” is a poem in the second stanza of which the author mentally confesses his love to his interlocutor. In these lines, he conveys the desire not to stop that happy moment: "to live without dropping sounds."

The languid years

Mary was a dowry. To marry her meant dooming yourself and your future family to eternal poverty. Bury your future, vegetate in the middle of nowhere and have a wife who has withered prematurely from poverty. In addition, their regiment was supposed to go into martial law and act towards the Austrian border. This is what Fet told Maria Lazic on the last evening. But the girl reacted with restraint to the officer's explanations. Maria stated that she did not intend to encroach on the freedom of the poet, but only dreamed of listening to him, talking with him.

When the situation escalated to such an extent that there was a threat to tarnish the girl's reputation, Fet stopped all communication with her.

The life of the poet's beloved ended tragically. Her father did not allow smoking in the house, but she still did not deny herself this pleasure. Once, while reading a book, Maria lit a cigarette and took a nap. When I woke up, the flames engulfed a significant part of the dress. Frightened, the girl only aggravated the situation: she began to run around the mansion and ran out to the balcony. Flames from the rush of air engulfed her entire body.

Maria Lazich died from severe burns and, according to witnesses, before her death she asked to keep Fet's letters. The poet never visited her grave. Until the end of his life, he considered himself guilty of her death.

“That you are alone - all your life, that you are love”

In the last lines, the author conveys regret about the past life. He managed to regain the title of nobility. He married well and lived a prosperous life. But he could not forget about Maria Lazich. After more than a quarter of a century, he again fancied the enchanting sounds of the piano and the singing of his beloved. The work uses a repetition: "Love you, hug and cry in front of you." This phrase occurs twice in the poem. With the help of this artistic technique, the author enhances the emotional effect.

Fet's poem "The Night Shone" is a masterpiece of Russian lyrics, once again confirming that a poet cannot become a true master of words without knowing true love and without experiencing a sense of loss.

One of the main features of A.A. Fet's poems is musicality. Therefore, the works of the poet fit so easily to music, and many romances have been created for their text.

A. Fet created a whole cycle of poems dedicated to music and singing - the cycle "Melodies", to which the poem "The night was shining. The garden was full of the moon. They lay ...".

And many years have passed, languid and boring,

Thus the song of the beloved becomes the music of love.

Fet's poem can be compared with the work of A.S. Pushkin "K ***". Here the motive of recollection, which is not subject to time, also becomes central. Like Pushkin, in Fet the voice of his beloved again awakens the hero to life, to feelings, to love.

In Fet's poem, love and music are invariably accompanied by tears and suffering: "You sang until dawn, exhausted in tears ..." Thus, with the help of the antithesis of suffering and happiness, the sense of life and beauty is aggravated.

The idea of the poem is that the meaning of human life is love.

Nature, art and love merge into one and together express the true essence and beauty of life:

And life has no end, and there is no other goal,

As soon as you believe in sobbing sounds,

You need to love, hug and cry for you.
