THE ADVENTURES OF FANDORIN

Detective based on the novel by B. Akunin

On February 2, the premiere of the play “The Adventures of Fandorin” will take place on the stage of the Opera and Ballet Theater. This a joint project Sergei Bezrukov Foundation and the Moscow Provincial Theater, artistic director of the production - Sergei Bezrukov, director - Tatyana Vdovichenko. The performance is based on Boris Akunin’s novel “Leviathan,” the third book in the famous series of historical detective stories about Erast Fandorin.

After the events experienced in the Russian-Turkish War, Erast Petrovich sails on the ship "Leviathan" to Japan, where he is sent to serve as embassy secretary Russian Empire. During a sea voyage, Fandorins again becomes a participant in a detective story. Recently, the murder of Lord Littleby and his family was committed in Paris. A badge in the form of a golden whale was found in the hand of the murdered man, most likely torn from the killer. This is the emblem of the Leviathan ship, which was given along with the ticket to all first class passengers. But which of them could commit such a terrible crime? An investigation begins and suspicion falls on five people who are missing a golden whale. Among them is Erast Fandorin...

In the role of Fandorin - MGT actor Alexander Sokolovsky, popular among young audiences for his work in the TV series “Molodezhka”, “Sklifosofsky”, etc. An actor was invited to play the role of detective Gosh Leonid Gromov. The role of Renata Kleber is played by Anna Snatkina. In the role of Clarissa Stump - Ekaterina Melnik.

Sergey Bezrukov , artistic director of the production:

“Our theater tries the most different genres and directions. Our repertoire includes musical performances, for example, “Vysotsky. The Birth of a Legend”, there is the phantasmagoria “The Dream of Reason” based on Gogol’s “Notes of a Madman”, there is the plastic performance of Sergei Zemlyansky “Caligula”. We had never tried to work in the genre of plastic drama before, and it was an interesting, wonderful experiment. Now we are trying ourselves in a new genre - the detective genre. How successful it will be is for the viewer to judge, but the interest in this production is already very great. Of course, this is, first of all, interest in the material: Boris Akunin is very much loved as an author, and the image of Fandorin he created is loved and does not need advertising. Time will tell how far it is possible to translate Akunin's detective story into stage language. We took the novel Leviathan as a basis, but it was important for us to connect it with the story described in the novel Azazel. Because the tragedy that happened to the hero at the end of that story, the death of his bride, is the very imprint with which he lives later long years. He can't forget Lisa. Therefore, the image of a girl, a dead bride, is present in our performance. And the fight against evil, which began in Azazel, continues for Fandorin.”

new ones first

Saturday evening. B. Akunin's novel "Leviathan" on the stage of the Moscow Provincial Theater.

I'm not a fan or even a fan detective genre, I’m not interested in guessing who(?) the killer is. But (!) detective stories are popular among teenagers and I simply could not help but go to this performance with my son (I try to be in touch with the younger generation).
There are really a lot of teenagers in the hall and hurray(!) there are no kids.

The performance was done very well. The images were chosen wonderfully. Special effects, costumes, decorations help you to immerse yourself completely in the plot. Light and...added humor brightens up and even adds charm. The new-fangled bicycle charmed everyone, my son actually... wanted to ride one!

The presence of the image of Fandorin’s dead bride and the movement of the murdered passengers to another world (on the other side of life) adds a deeper meaning.

In a word, all we saw was the style of a good English detective in its best traditions! The intensity is increasing and (in our opinion) the very same thing happens in the second act. The plot unfolds so quickly and so unpredictably that you begin to feel this thrill for which you came! Even I liked it.

The bow of the artists is a separate topic, which was a family affair.

Our evening turned out to be wonderful! My son was especially impressed that he saw familiar artists on stage (the ones he sees on the screen). This not only made him happy, but he finally tasted all the charm of theaters and said that he now wants to go to performances with the actors he knows and loves, because “the theater is cooler than cinema, IT’S alive!”

Bravo! (I thought)
- My son fell in love with the theater!
- Curtain!...until the next meeting on stage.
- And we wish everyone who has not yet been to this theater and to this performance... to go and appreciate it.

The age range is set on the basis that children at this age (12 years old) begin to become interested in detective stories. If this is the case for you, then you can safely go; if not, then it is better to postpone the trip until you are older. Then you will have fun even without being interested in detective stories.

We looked at big stage. The hall has a lift in each row, but (!) I would like to draw your attention to the fact that apparently there are deep chairs, because... my son, who is 165 cm tall, was not very comfortable (the heads of those sitting in front were in the way).

We had the 6th row of the stalls, right middle. If you take the middle ground, it is better (I assume) to consider left side midpoint for this performance. At the same time, I noticed that from places a little further from the middle, it should also be clearly visible.
And probably the closest rows the better who really want to take a closer look at the actors. But for those who want to enjoy the special effects, I think it’s better to watch from the rows further away. The coverage will be more impressive.

The absolutely light, elegant premiere of "The Adventures of Fandorin" took place at the Moscow Provincial Theater. This is a play based on Boris Akunin's novel "Leviathan", which is performed absolutely according to the book. Before us is a classic English detective story in a confined space, where anyone can be a killer. And, as in the book, this atmosphere is well conveyed on stage, flavored with gentle humor

The Adventures of Fandorin at the Provincial Theater

“Last Saturday we suddenly found ourselves among those lucky ones who were lucky enough to be among the first class passengers of the Leviathan. How? Because in addition to the tickets we received gold badges with the image of a whale.

I read the detective story itself about 15 years ago, I forgot the plot, so Detective story on board, staged at the Moscow Provincial Theater, captivated me completely. A closed space, a limited set of characters and the right amount of irony. The style of a good English detective in its best traditions. Sheer pleasure.

Of course, the first question that arises is whether the image of Fandorin was a success? Will the already familiar Fandorin-Menshikov interfere with perception? So, here you can immediately calm down. Fandorin is impeccable. The right appearance, the right slimness. A calm, intelligent, ironic and at the same time deeply lonely person..."

“I’ll say right away - the performance is simply excellent. It captivated me from the very beginning, as the action progressed, the tension rapidly increased. I had a seat in the stalls, a little to the side - everything was perfectly visible, including the actors’ facial expressions - it was a great pleasure to watch. The sound was simply magnificent "I clearly heard every line, every word... A change of scenery in a play is a separate little action that fits into the plot. Pictures of the play still flash in my head..."

"The Adventures of Fandorin" at the Moscow Provincial Theater

"The powerful ending with the revelation of Kleber and the handkerchief shows the hidden inclination towards wealth in the characters' characters. The war for the handkerchief, which is the key to the Maharaja's treasures, is serious. Well, actually, what would you do if you had the opportunity to get the key to countless treasures? Probably, each of us would behave the same way... And here Fandorin does something that none of us would do. He burns a handkerchief with the words that the hidden treasures there are enough for the entire budget of Russia, but nothing, We will hold on. Which causes sad laughter in the hall."

On September 23, we watched the premiere play "The Adventures of Fandorin." MHT has set itself a difficult task: firstly, it seems to me, theater stage It’s quite difficult to stage a detective story so that it’s not only exciting, but truly scary and realistic, and the second difficulty is the very appeal to the image of a famous detective, because readers and viewers of film adaptations know for sure what he should be like) and “keep in front of eyes" original author's text.
Some time in the first act of the performance was required for a unique presentation of all the numerous characters"Leviathan" (the novel on which the play is based) and a certain introduction to the audience "up to date." This, in my opinion, slowed down the action somewhat and event series“adventures” and it was not Fandorin who came to the fore, but Commissar Gosh, who was played brightly and, as they say, “in broad strokes”, addressing not only his partners, but also appealing to the audience, played by Leonid Gromov. Fandorin, in my opinion, was few and far between. Although, on the other hand, in the novel Erast Petrovich also for the time being acts as an observer and listener. Finally, in the second act, Fandorin ceased to be an observer and turned into the main participant in terrible, romantic and mystical events. Alexander Sokolovsky definitely plays a hero who has not yet become the “emotional invalid” (c) that he will appear to others later. Noble, insightful and courageous, he is perceived in this story as to a greater extent a romantic hero in contrast to the “old bloodhound” (as he calls himself) Gosha.
The hero's romanticism, his personal tragedy and chivalry on the side of the forces of light in the eternal struggle between good and evil are reflected in the image of a ghost girl (the ghost of his tragically deceased young wife) who accompanies Fandorin and the floating "Leviathan" throughout the entire story. The ghost is either a bright vision-memory, or an ominous harbinger of upcoming murders, or Death itself, taking away its new subjects... In the finale, after a seemingly triumphantly won victory, Fandorin, in hopeless despair, will fall at the head of his dead beloved and, not in unable to hold back tears, he will kiss her hair...
The unfolding chain of events makes you tensely follow the plot twists of the play and the “tearing of masks” from the characters, many of whom, as it should be in a real detective story, turn out to be not at all who they seemed at first. At the same time, the production also has funny moments, “untranslatable puns”), witty jokes on financial and political topics).
Traditionally, performances at the Provincial Theater delight with their scenography. So this time, the costumes of the characters made a great impression; unusual decorations: huge portholes, a pendulum steering wheel with spotlights, fluttering sails; sounding music and special effects that recreate thunderstorms and storms. On the stage there was even a working phonograph and a two-wheeled penny-farthing bicycle, on which Fandorin rode along the promenade deck, and in the finale rode out to bow!
Of the characters we saw, I would also like to note the Indologist-archaeologist Sweetchild, performed by Andrei Misilin: his waving arms and sparkling eyes of a scientist, whose hair even seemed to stand on end when he excitedly began to talk about the treasures of the Indian Rajah, captivated the entire audience. An interesting character- Baronet Milford-Stokes, played by Sergei Medvedev, turned out to be both arrogant and hunted at the same time (the owner of expressive facial expressions and a charming smile appeared in a new and very unexpected image).
And of course, bows! They are wonderful at the Provincial Theater. The bows to "The Adventures of Fandorin" became a real parade of characters and a separate little performance!
Many thanks to all the actors, director Tatyana Vdovichenko, artistic director production to Sergei Bezrukov and all the creators of the play! Thank you for the performance, thanks to which fans of the detective Fandorin were able to plunge into the authentic atmosphere of Akunin’s books, fans of the detective genre became witnesses and participants in fascinating action-packed collisions, viewers who had not read the original source were able to test their deductive and analytical abilities, and all together - just to get pleasure and food for thought from everything he saw. Congratulations to the Moscow Provincial Theater and wish a happy journey to “The Adventures of Fandorin” on the “Leviathan”, which left the Provincial Shipyard! Happy Premiere!
