Sayings about the Slavs. Statements of foreigners about the Slavs at different times

I give below a few sayings about the Slavs left by various chroniclers and travelers.

From the "Acts of the Danes" by Saxo Grammar
The city of Arkona lies on top of a high cliff; from the north, east and south it is fenced with natural protection ... on the western side it is protected by a high mound of 50 cubits ... In the middle of the city lies an open square on which rises a wooden temple, of excellent work, but revered not so much for the magnificence of architecture, but for the majesty of God, to whom an idol is erected here. All outer side the building shone with skillfully made bas-reliefs of various figures, but ugly and crudely painted. Only one entrance was into the interior of the temple, surrounded by a double fence. The outer fence consisted of a thick wall with a red roof; the inner one was made up of four strong columns, which, not connected by a solid wall, were hung with carpets that reached to the ground, and adjoined the outer fence with only a few arches and a roof. In the temple itself stood a large idol, exceeding human height, with four heads, on the same number of necks, of which two came out of the chest and two to the ridge, but in such a way that from both front and both hind heads one looked to the right and the other to the left. Hair and beard were cut short, and in this, it seemed, the artist conformed to the habit of ruddy. In his right hand, the idol held a horn made of various metals, which was usually filled every year with wine from the hands of a priest for divination about fertility. next year; left hand, which the idol leaned on its side, was likened to a bow. Outerwear went down to the berets, which were made up of various types of trees and were so skillfully connected to the knees that only a close examination could distinguish the fugues. The legs were level with the ground, their foundation was made under the floor. In a small distance, the bridle and saddle of the idol with other accessories were visible. The viewer was most struck by a huge sword, the scabbard and shank of which, in addition to beautiful carved forms, were distinguished by silver trim. ... To keep the idol, each inhabitant of the island of both sexes contributed a coin. He was also given a third of the booty and theft, believing that his protection would grant success. In addition, he had at his disposal three hundred horses and the same number of riders, who handed everything, obtained either by violence or cunning, to the high priest; prepared from here various decorations temple. The rest was kept in chests under locks; in them, except huge amount gold, many purple clothes lay, but rotten and thin because of dilapidation.
One could also see many public and private gifts, donated with pious vows, asking for help, because the whole Slavic land gave tribute to this idol. Even the neighboring sovereigns sent him gifts with reverence: by the way, the Danish king Svenon, to propitiate him, brought a bowl of the most elaborate decoration as a gift. ...
This god also had temples in very many other places, ruled by priests of lesser importance. In addition, with him was a horse, completely white, from which it was considered impiety to pull out the hair from the mane or tail. Only the high priest could feed him and ride him, so that an ordinary bridle would not humiliate the divine animal. They believed that on this horse Svyatovit waged war against the enemies of his sanctuary. This followed from the fact that a horse standing in a stall at night was often covered in foam and mud in the morning, as if he had returned from long journey
Svyatovit symbolized different signs, in particular, carved eagles and banners, the main of which was called Stanitsa. It was excellent in size and color and was revered by the Ruyan people almost as much as the greatness of all the gods. Carrying it in front of them, they considered themselves entitled to plunder everything human and divine, and considered everything to be allowed to them. With it, they could devastate cities, destroy altars, make the wrong right, destroy and burn all the penates of Ruyansk - and the power of this small piece of canvas was stronger than the power of the prince.

"Of all the Baltic tribes, the Vagrs, the foremost fighters on land against the Germans, were the first daring people at sea. They themselves accustomed themselves to marine life, so that contemporaries called their country the maritime region of the Slavs. On the other hand, their position is ahead of all Slavic peoples, among the enemies, Saxons and Danes, took away the possibility of peaceful, merchant shipping. Thus, the war at sea with the Danes became the main occupation of the Wagris, as on land with the Germans, and their main occupation was piracy.”

(A. Hilferding. History of the Baltic Slavs.)

“Not far from the region of the Claves are, as far as we know, three remarkable islands. Another island [Rügen] is located opposite the country of the Wilts. It is inhabited by the mighty Sklavian tribe of the Rans, [or Runes]. According to the law, no decision on public affairs is made without taking into account their opinion. They are so feared for the reason that gods, or rather demons, are close friends with this tribe, to whose worship they are more devoted than others. Both islands are filled with pirates and ruthless robbers who do not spare anyone passing by. For everyone that other pirates usually sell, they kill.”
(Adam of Bremen ACTS OF THE ARCHBISHOPS OF THE CHURCH OF HAMBURG)

"Idolaters lived on that island - wounds or rutens, called lyuts, were cruel in battle, such were noble, strong, brave warriors, they fought cruelly against Christians, stood up for their idols, and were terrible and disgusting to all the neighboring states. The language of They were Slovenian and Vandal. They did not look for competent teaching, but they also made a commandment among themselves, so that diligent hunters would be literate, and not only military affairs.
(Gerard Mercator "Cosmography")

“I have not seen people with more perfect bodies than they are. They are like palm trees, blond, beautiful in face, clean in body. They do not wear jackets or caftans, but their man wears a kitty, with which he covers one side, hands come out of it. And with each of them there is an ax, a sword and a knife. And he never partes with all this. And from the edge of the nails of another of them to his neck there is a collection of trees, images of pictures and the like. "
(Ibn - Fadlan)

"They never intermarried with foreign women and, thanks to this unmixed offspring, preserved in their midst the true purity of the family."
(Procopius of Caesarea "War with the Goths")

“Honesty and camaraderie among them are such that they, completely unaware of theft or deceit, do not lock their chests and boxes. We did not see a lock or a key there, and the inhabitants themselves were very surprised, noticing that the packed boxes and the bishop's chests were locked."
(Biography of Otto Bambersky)

Humanity, responsiveness and that sympathy for joys and sufferings are generally inherent in the soul of a Slav. This soul is least of all subject to outbursts of crude egoism, so characteristic of the Germanic race, or puffed-up affectation, so characteristic of the Romanesque. Responsiveness and sympathy of a Slav for someone else comes to self-forgetfulness, to complete disregard for one's "I". This can be clearly established by general character cultural development in Russia, as well as to a large extent other nationalities of the Slavic tribe.

Slaveykov Pencho - Bulgarian poet, XIX-XX centuries.

The attitude of Commodore Perry towards the Japanese and the tactics of the Russian ambassador Putyatin were diametrically opposed. Our artillery was taken prisoner in the battle of Tarutino, the artillerymen were disarmed and taken away. On the same evening, the Cossacks who captured them, celebrating their victory, decided to end the day, joyful for them and bitter for us, with national dances, and, of course, the drink was not forgotten. Their hearts softened, they wanted to make everyone a participant in fun, joy, they remembered their captives and invited them to take part in the fun. Our poor gunners at first took advantage of this offer as a rest from their mortal fatigue, but then little by little, under the impression of friendly treatment, they joined the dances and took a sincere part in them. The Cossacks liked it so much that they completely loosened up, and when mutual friendship reached its highest point, our French dressed in full form, took weapons and after the most cordial handshakes, hugs and kisses parted with the Cossacks, they were allowed to go home.

And here is how the French treated our prisoners:

“In Mozhaisk, there were more than 10,000 wounded Russians placed in houses and churches, all of them were ruthlessly expelled, wounded Frenchmen were placed on their beds. This measure cost the lives of the unfortunate Russians, they all died in terrible agony.

Everywhere the French prisoners were treated very good-naturedly and even well. For each prisoner, with a free apartment and heating, 50 kopecks were released. for an officer and 15 kopecks. on a soldier. Those of the prisoners who knew any skill or possessed any talent were highly valued and earned good money.

In Ungen, I noticed a sentry guarding two Turkish prisoners. I had beef pies and offered to the sentry. Thinking that I only had one pie, he refused and suggested that I give it to the Turk, who, in his opinion, was hungrier than him. When the Turk, having received the cake, began to pray, the sentry, turning to his other comrades, said in a whisper: "Hush, be silent, the Turk is praying." Everyone fell silent.

The visit of the ship, as they said in the prefecture of the city, caused two feelings: delight and annoyance. Delight from the fact that Tulonians did not know such correct, well-mannered and delicate military sailors as the Soviet ones. And the annoyance for wasted francs. The fact is that the prefecture, before similar visits by other fleets, pays for additional forces to restore order in the city. Especially the city "shudders" during the entry of English warships. This time the prefect grieved for the waste of money thrown out of the city treasury. It would be better, he remarked, they would go to give gifts to Soviet sailors.

“The Slavs earned this glorious name for themselves thanks to weapons, and the hereditary right to bear arms belongs to the Slavs in more than all other nations in the world."

Bernard Justinian

“However, leaving aside the above interpretations of the name of the Slavs, I dare say that it came from nothing more than glory, since Slav means “glorious”. After such frequent triumphs over their enemies, as evidenced by the vast number of conquered kingdoms and countries, this most valiant people appropriated the name of glory itself. On "glory", they end with the names of many noble and eminent men: Stanislav, Wenceslas, Ladislav, Dobroslav, Radoslav, Boleslav.

Mauro Orbini

“Then the proud Slavic people invaded Istria and reached the borders of Venetia. In those days, many tribes attacked the Roman Empire, but the Slavs, a people of Scythian origin, acquired a glorious name for themselves by military prowess. Thus, this valiant people should have been called nothing other than the Slavs, and that is exactly what many pundits called them ... If the name of the Slavs is new, then the glory won by weapons and blood is inherent in them by nature and inherited from ancestors who won glorious victories in Asia, Europe and Africa. They were called Vandals, Goths, Alans, Dacians, Normans. They were all Slavs and had one language.

Bernard Justinian, Venetian historian, writer

“The Maya priests received all the necessary information from a highly developed civilization - they were Slavs, the ancestors of the Russian people living today on the territory of Russia.”

Timothy Snyder professor of history at Yale University

“The Russian people is the most ancient people on earth, from which all other peoples descended. The Russians, with the courage of their warriors and the best weapons in the world, have kept the entire universe in obedience and obedience for thousands of years. The Russians have always owned all of Asia, Africa, Persia, Egypt, Greece, Macedonia, Illyria, Moravia, Shlonsky land, the Czech Republic, Poland, all the shores of the Baltic Sea, Italy and many other countries and lands ... "

Mauro Orbini, Italian historian (1601)

“No matter how many thousands of May years they observed the stars, even if 10 thousand years, they would not be able to compile a calendar of such accuracy. The only origin of the May calendar, and this is beyond doubt, is from the Slavic people.

David Grunver, Ph.D. from Columbia University

“The Slavic people embittered with their weapons almost all peoples in the universe; ruined Persis: owned Asia and Africa, fought with the Egyptians and with the great Alexander; conquered Greece, Macedonia, the Illyrian land; took possession of Moravia, Shlensky land, Czech, Polish, and the shores of the Baltic Sea, went to Italy, where he fought against the Romans for a long time. Sometimes he was defeated, sometimes he fought in battle, he took revenge on the Romans with a great death; sometimes battling in battle, he was equal. Finally, having subjugated the power of Rome, he took possession of many of their provinces, ruined Rome, doing tributaries of the Caesars of Rome, which no other people in the whole world did. He owned France, England, and established a state in Spain; mastered the best provinces in Europe."

Mauro Orbini, Italian historian (1601)

“In 480 before the founding of Rome, the king of Egypt, Vesoz, wishing to mix the south and north, separated by almost the whole sky and sea belts, and join them to his kingdom, was the first to declare war on the Scythians, sending envoys in advance to announce conditions of submission to the enemies. To this, the Scythians answer that the stupidly richest king undertook a war against the poor, because, on the contrary, he should be afraid of staying, in view of the unknown outcome of the war, without any benefits and with obvious losses. Then they do not have to wait until they come to them, and they themselves will go towards the prey. They do not hesitate, and action follows the word. First of all, they force Vesoz himself to flee in fright to his kingdom, while the army left behind is attacked and all military supplies are taken away. Returning immediately back, they conquered all of Asia and made it their tributary ... "

Pavel Orosius, ancient Roman historian

“Egypt is an ancient Russian, Old Slavonic word. Some argue that the term "Egypt" (Aigyptos) comes from the Phoenician "Hikupta" - a distorted Egyptian "Hatkapt" (lit. Hatka Pta, "Temple of Ptah"). Russian hut and literally means "house, mansions, temple". The second part - pta, - Russian. bird, bird, bird. Thus, the "Egyptian" "hatkapta" in Russian means "house of the bird", "temple of the bird".

Max Vasmer, German linguist (1886 - 1962)

“This people is courageous to the point of madness, brave and strong ... The Russians, who gained the glory of winners from neighboring peoples, considered it a terrible disaster to lose it, fought desperately ... They say that the defeated Scythians never surrender to enemies alive, but, sticking swords into the womb, themselves kill. They do this because of their opinion that those killed in the battle after their death or separation of the soul from the body serve their murderers in hell, therefore, fearing this slavery, afraid to serve their enemies, they slaughter themselves.

Leo the Deacon, Byzantine historian (971)

“For a long time, we Greeks have been calling these heroes Russians, or Russ. Russian men are valiant warriors. During the raids, they manage to take a few slaves from these Slavs, and they all prefer death to captivity.

Zachary, orator (5th century AD)

“They (Scythians, Alans) had no concept of slavery, being all of equally noble birth, and as judges they still choose persons for a long time distinguished by military exploits.

Ammianus Marcellinus, ancient Roman historian

“The tribes of the Sklavs and Antes (Slavs) are the same both in their way of life and in their customs; free, they are in no way inclined either to become slaves or to obey, especially in their own land. They are numerous and hardy, easily enduring heat, and cold, and rain, and nakedness of the body, and lack of food. They are kind and friendly to the foreigners who come to them, they escort them in turn from place to place, wherever they need it; so that if the guest, through the carelessness of the host, is harmed, the one who brought the guest begins enmity against him, considering vengeance for him a sacred duty. They do not keep those who are in their captivity indefinitely, like other tribes, but, having determined the exact period for them, they leave them at their discretion: either they wish to return home for a ransom, or remain there as free people and friends. They have a variety of livestock and cereals stacked in stacks, especially millet and spelt. Their wives are chaste beyond all human nature so that many of them honor the death of their husbands own death and voluntarily suffocate themselves, not considering life in widowhood. They live among forests, rivers, swamps and insurmountable lakes, arranging a lot, with different sides, exits from their dwellings because of the dangers that usually overtake them ... "

Mauritius, Byzantine emperor (VI c.)

“The Slavs are excellent warriors, because military affairs become a harsh science for them in every detail. The highest happiness in their eyes is to die in battle. To die of old age or of any accident is a disgrace, nothing more humiliating than which can be. They are generally beautiful and tall; their hair is cast in light brown color. Their gaze is more militant than ferocious... Often they make raids, unexpected attacks and various tricks day and night and, so to speak, play war... Their greatest art is that they know how to hide in rivers under water. Often, caught by the enemy, they lie at the bottom for a very long time and breathe with the help of long reed tubes, the end of which is taken into the mouth, and the other sticks out to the surface of the water and thus hides in the depths.

antique sources

“Among all the peoples known to us, only the Scythians possess one, but the most important art. It consists in the fact that they do not allow a single enemy who attacked their country to be saved.

Herodotus, ancient Greek historian

“Rus is snow, fields, amazing musical instruments, joy at a funeral, linen shirts, boots, wine, honey. And they are also the sadness of kings - since it is difficult to defeat them.

Al Garnati, Arabic geographer

“Russia extends to the north “as far as it will go”. This is a vast country and extremely richly endowed by nature with everything that is necessary for life. Its inhabitants have bad temper- recalcitrant, defiant, like to argue, belligerent. They fight with all the infidels who live around their country and win victories. The Russians respect their Magi."

Arab-Persian sources

“These people are powerful, their physique is large, their courage is great, they do not know how to escape, not one of them runs away until he kills or is killed. It is their custom for everyone to carry a weapon ... I heard from people who were witnesses of these Russ, amazing stories about their bravery and their scornful attitude towards the Muslims gathered against them. Once five people of Russ gathered in one of the gardens of Berdaa; among them was a beardless young man, clean in face, the son of one of their chiefs, and with them several female captives. Upon learning of their presence, the Muslims surrounded the garden. A large number of Daylemites and others gathered to fight these five people. They tried to get at least one of them captured, but there was no approach to this, because not one of them surrendered. And until then they could not be killed until they were killed several times more Muslims. The beardless youth was the last survivor. When he noticed that he would be taken prisoner, he climbed a tree that was close to him, and stabbed himself with his dagger in deadly places until he fell dead.

Ibn Miskawayh, Arab historian (944)

“The ancient custom of the Slavs was not to live permanently in one place ... They always lived in tents, fought, were free and indomitable. During August Caesar and after him, the Slavs conquered almost all of Europe, and most of Asia and Africa ... This brave Slavic people never rested in peace ... Intended to leave the Sarmatian deserts, divided into 2 parts, one went to the North and settled the coast Baltic Sea for 250 German miles across Germany, Prussia, Livonia and the shores opposite Denmark and Finland, up to Vyborg, and this country was called Veneda, in German Wenden, in Italian Glory, and other peoples called them Vandals ... Another part of the Sarmatian Slavs went south, settled on the banks of the Danube and from there made attempts to seize the Roman state, whose lands and provinces were so weakened that finally many of them were conquered ... The Slavic people did not have an autocratic system, but from ancient times enjoyed universal freedom. All actions, useful or harmful, were discussed in their general council. The elders among the Slavs recognized only Perun (that is, the Thunderer) as God, the Lord of a single universe, to whom bulls and other animals were to be sacrificed.

Mauro Orbini, Italian historian (1601)

“The concept of justice was inspired by the Scythians by their own mind, and not by laws. Theft is considered the heaviest crime. They do not have passions for gold and silver, like other mortals ... "

Pompey Trog, ancient Roman historian

“These peoples, Slavs and Antes, are not subject to sovereign power, but since ancient times they live under the rule of the people. Benefits and harms are universally accepted. Likewise, other things have been kept by both peoples since ancient times. One god, the creator of thunder and the whole world, the gentlemen profess. Oxen and other sacrifices are offered to him. Fates do not recognize and do not attribute to her any actions in the human race. Having fallen into an illness or preparing for war and seeing death close at hand, they make a promise to God that if they are freed from it, they will immediately make a sacrifice. Having received what they want, they fulfill their promise soon and believe that their life has been saved by this sacrifice. Moreover, rivers and other waters are revered, as well as some other gods, whom everyone is served and, in offering sacrifices, they guess about the future. They live in huts, scattered separately and often move from one place to another ... The shields of the warriors are made of bull skin, light, and all weapons are light. Swords a cubit long and short knives. The iron is sonorous and such that our sword can cut, but it will not notch itself. When they go out to fight, many go on foot with shields and with spears; do not wear lat. Others, without clothes on their shoulders, fight with the enemy in the same pants. Both languages are the same - strange. All are tall in stature and members are immensely strong, with blondish hair. By themselves attacking others in order to take possession of their property and people, the laws forbid them in the same way as trafficking in people. Therefore, they do not have slaves, but they all work without distinction of position and position ... Captives, if they want to stay with them and marry, enjoy the same equality, while others are released and provide everything for the road ... They are not evil and not cunning, but frank and good-natured ... "

Procopius of Caesarea, Byzantine historian

“This people professes the religion of magicians (as the Arabs called the supporters of the Aryan religion). Among the tribes of these places there is no people of more refined appearance, with purer faces, no more handsome men and more beautiful women. Slimmer, thinner at the waist, with a clearer line of hips and buttocks, and in general there is no people better looking than this. They dress in white, in Rum brocade, in bright scarlet fabric ... "

Masudi, Arab traveler

“When I arrived in the country of the Slavs, I saw that this country is vast, abundant in honey and wheat, and barley and big apples, which is better than nothing. They settle among themselves with old squirrel skins, which can never be used for anything. And for each of these skins they give excellent round bread, which is enough for a strong man.

Abu Hamid al Garnati Arabic writer, traveler

“I saw the Ruses when they arrived on their trading business and settled down near the Atyl River. I have not seen people with more perfect bodies than them. They are like palm trees, blond, beautiful in face and white in body. They do not wear jackets or hawtans, but their man wears a kitty that covers one side, with one of the arms coming out of it. And with each of them there is an ax, a sword and a knife, and with all this he never parted.

Ibn Fadlan, Arab merchant (922)

“None of the peoples was as great as the Vandals, who brought their colonies to Asia, Africa and Europe. In Europe, they settled all the way from north to south, from the German Sea to the Mediterranean. Therefore, Muscovites, Russians, Poles, Bohemians, Cherkasy, Bulgarians and many other peoples, although they differ in name, nevertheless, are all one vandal nation. This also proves their mutual language and adverb."

Mauro Orbini, Italian historian (1601)

“In former times, there were many Gothic tribes, and there are many of them now, but the largest and most powerful of them were the Goths, the Vandals, formerly called the Sarmatians. They all differed in name, but converged in everything else. All of them had light skin, shoulder-length blond hair, a large build and a pleasant appearance. They had the same laws, they all professed Arianism, had one language, and, it seems to me, they came from the same tribe, subsequently adopting various titles named after their commanders.

Procopius of Caesarea, Byzantine historian

“They, leaving Scandinavia, the common fatherland of all Slavs, were divided into two parts. One part went to Asia and settled near the mountains of the North; now they are called Tatars. Others, uniting with the Vandals and Burgundians, expelled the French and called themselves Scythians, but some writers call them Dacians. But it would be better to call them Goths, since both of them spoke the same language. The Alans, the Slavs, were neighbors to the Amazons... they even spread to the Ganges River, which divides India into two parts and flows into the South Sea... They didn't build any wagons or houses, didn't plow the land, but ate meat and big amount milk. They constantly lived on carts covered with tree bark and drove these carts with them across the vast steppes ... Every country they visited seemed to be their own ... Young people learned to ride horses, because walking on foot was considered humiliating for them. Almost all of them were skilled warriors, they were tall, they were very beautiful in face, their hair was medium blond, their eyes were beautiful and formidable. They were very fast... hunting animals, they reached the Meotian (Azov) Sea, the Throat of the Cimmerian (Kerch Strait), Armenia and Media... Those who died of old age were considered fools and loafers. Glorious among them was the one who was killed in the war. They did not take prisoners, but cut off the head of the defeated enemy, skinned him and put it on their horses, and with such decorations they led the horses into battle. They had no Church, no Temple, no Priests, no special Gods, but taking the sabers out of their scabbards and sticking them into the ground, they worshiped them as God Mars, whom they believed in as the patron of all those places where they fought. They had wondrous knowledge about the future, which they guessed about by collecting some straight twigs and dismantling them at a certain time, accompanying this with some spells. Slavery was not in their use, since they believed that everyone belonged to a noble family. They had elected rulers and judges, choosing them from the most skillful and knowledgeable in military affairs. They attacked Palestine, Egypt and Judea, which suffered a terrible devastation during the time of Vespasian the King. They devastated Media, Armenia, in the time of Decius they took Byzantium ... Alans, having joined other Slavic peoples - the Vandals, the Burgundians, under the leadership of their common prince Simgiban, took possession of Gaul (France). From there they went to Spain and captured part of Spain, calling it Alanya, which is now distortedly pronounced as Catalonia. Not satisfied with this, they attacked Portugal, where they established their Kingdom for a while ... "

Mauro Orbini, Italian historian (1601)

“Glories from the same Scandinavia broke into Pannonia during the time of Justinian; then this people flooded all of Europe, bringing their own language and names. I heard that the Bohemians, Poles, Lithuanians, Dalmatians, Muscovites, Bosnians, Bulgarians, Serbs and Vandals spoke this language of Slavs, brought by them from Scandinavia and differing only in dialects. No one sought to settle in Scythia, although the Scythians themselves conquered Spain, Italy and Greece.

Despite the fact that the history of the Slavic peoples is rooted in antiquity, official science is in no hurry to popularize this fact. Until now, some publications refer to the German historians Miller and Schlozer, thanks to whom an extremely unscrupulous and one-sided version of the history of Rus' has spread, it is not without reason that the great Lomonosov considered their writings a collection of absurdities and fabrications:

“Miller’s Russians are beaten on almost every page, they are robbed safely ... This is so wonderful that if Miller knew how to portray it with a lively calm, then he would have made Russia such a poor people as no other (...) people from any writer presented…”.

Schlozer stated without a shadow of a doubt: “In Rus' before Rurik there were, of course, people, but people without a state; they lived like forest animals, did not stand out in any way, without any communication with the world, and therefore were not noted or described by any of the cultured Europeans ... The wild, rude Slavs began to become public people only thanks to the mediation of the Germans, who were destined by fate to disperse in the northwestern and the northeastern worlds the first seeds of civilization".

And this is written by a man who not only did not read the ancient chronicles, but also failed to learn the Russian language, despite the fact that he lived in Russia until the end of his days!

August Schlozer and Gerhard Miller

It is difficult to argue with the fact that the antiquity of Slavic roots has been deliberately hidden for centuries. But are there really no sources confirming the true age of the history of the Slavs-Aryans, which, of course, is not limited to one and a half millennia, released to her by millers and shletsers?

Of course, we should not forget that many ancient sources have disappeared or been destroyed. The famous Alexandrian, Constantinople, and Athenian libraries burned down. Lost traces of the book depositories of Ivan the Terrible and Yaroslav the Wise. And how many more valuable chronicle materials were destroyed in Rus'!

But, nevertheless, even today we can find in ancient and later authors whole line evidence of antiquity and the great past of the Slavic peoples. Many of the famous historians, writers, rulers or commanders have not ignored this topic.

One of the first to do this was Homer and Herodotus. True, in their writings the Slavic-Aryan peoples are mentioned under the names Wends, Venets, Wends, Antes, Enets, Rugs, Scythians and Serbs.

Nicknamed the father of history, Herodotus gave one of the first descriptions of the ancient inhabitants of the Black Sea region: “Among all the peoples known to us, only the Scythians possess one, but the most important art. It consists in the fact that they do not allow a single enemy who attacked their country to be saved..

Almost two and a half millennia later, the King of Prussia, Frederick II, who became famous for his militancy, practically repeated these words: “Avoid confrontation with a cruel and invincible people. The Russians are descended from the Scythians who destroyed the Roman Empire…”

Friedrich II

As you can see, Friedrich has no doubt about the Scythian roots of the Russians. But in order to clarify the theme of the alleged "cruelty" of the Slavic warriors, we will quote the words of another author - Mauritius the Strategist (6-7 centuries AD, Byzantium), who wrote the famous treatise on the art of war "Strategikon". In the treatise, a rather impressive part is devoted to the Slavic peoples, from this document we learn that “The tribes of the Slavs and Antes ... are numerous and hardy, they easily endure heat, and cold, and rain, and nakedness of the body, and lack of food. Foreigners who come to them are kind and friendly. They do not keep those who are in their captivity indefinitely, like other tribes, but, having determined the exact period for them, they leave them at their discretion: either they wish to return home for a ransom, or they will remain there as free people and friends ... "

A little earlier, the Byzantine historian and writer Procopius of Caesarea (507-565) stated almost the same thing: “Themselves to attack others in order to take possession of their property and people, the laws forbid them in the same way as trafficking in people. Therefore, they do not have slaves, but they all work without distinction of position and position ... "

Procopius notes not only fearlessness and peacefulness, but also the high spirituality of the Slavic peoples.

Many ancient Roman, Gothic, Italian, Arabic, German, as well as Russian and other famous historians, travelers, geographers, writers and other prominent people of their time wrote about their power, lifestyle, territory.

But, perhaps, the Italian priest Mauro Orbini spoke most clearly about 400 years ago in his book "Slavic kingdom" (published in 1601): " Slavic genus older than the pyramids and so numerous that it inhabited half the world".

Under the heading "Great about the Slavs" there should undoubtedly be later names of the first magnitude - Catherine the Great and Mikhail Vasilyevich Lomonosov.

The Russian Empress wrote: “The Slavs in the east, west and north possessed so many areas that there was hardly any land left in Europe that they did not touch”.

M.V. Lomonosov, a Russian genius and universal scientist, in his historical research had the opportunity to work with now disappeared chronicles and ancient sources, in particular, he relied on the works of Pliny, Ptolemy, Strabo. He presented his findings in an extensive historical work from which has come down to our days small part, but the information that has survived is enough to seriously revise many postulates of modern historical science.

Scientists of subsequent centuries spoke about the antiquity and greatness of the Slavs - Chertkov, Klassen, Volansky and many others.

The topic "Great about the Slavs", of course, is not limited to the authors cited and their citations. Contrary to the notion that too little information about the antiquity of the Slavic peoples has survived to this day, there are many such materials. For example, quite a few Serbian and Bulgarian sources have been preserved, from which rich information about the distant past can be gleaned. Slavic Ancestors. That is why the scientists of these countries almost immediately recognized the authenticity of the Book of Veles - they found in it direct confirmation of the information set forth in their annals and legends.

Today, scientists are discovering more and more new materials. The first version of Orbini's writings was found and translated into Russian, which made it possible to read this work in its original form, without abbreviations. archaeological finds The current decades have caused a new surge of interest in the history of the Slavic peoples, hundreds of books have been published exploring this topic. Thanks to these studies, it is safe to say that the roots of the Slavs-Aryans go back to the deep past, which has no less than 4-5 tens of millennia, and, according to a number of experts, this age is an order of magnitude older. In our next articles, we will talk in more detail about the prominent people who touched on this topic in different countries, V different times and epochs.
