Joker in films

  • Batman (film, 1966) (film and TV series) - Cesar Romero
  • Batman: Dead End (2003 film) - Andrew Koenig

The Joker's first appearance in a movie was the TV series of the 60s, where he was slightly changed in terms of appearance: now he has light green hair, combed into a ball, and instead of a frozen smile, the corners of his mouth were lengthened with lipstick. His suit was made dark pink, and his gloves were purple. In the series, the Joker is more of a clown than a villain. In addition, he acts very weakly here, just following the Penguin's instructions.

After that, the Joker was only in cartoons and comics for a long time.

In 1989, the Joker returned in Tim Burton's Batman, played by Jack Nicholson. Here he gets a name - Jack Napier, the former right hand of crime boss Carl Grissom. Jack fell into a toxic waste tank at a chemical plant, and as a result of unsuccessful plastic surgery, his face was disfigured: a smile was permanently frozen on it. There is no Robin in this film, and Batman remembers that the Joker killed Bruce Wayne's parents when Bruce was just a little boy. The traditional appearance was preserved: green hair, white face, red lips, expensive purple suit, purple gloves and a constant smile. They did their best with a smile: Jack Nicholson had artificial make-up applied to the corners of his lips and cheeks, “frozen in a smile.” At the end of the film, he was killed by Batman, although the Joker was given much more time than Batman.

In the 21st century, the Joker appeared in a new animated series, and in the cartoon “Batman vs. Dracula” the Joker became a vampire (like other supervillains).

Main article: Batman: Dead End

The portrayal of the Joker (Andrew Koenig) in this low-budget fan film impressed many and is considered a cross between Ledger and Nicholson. The Joker's appearance is reminiscent of the Nolan film, but the Joker here has brown hair instead of green. The character of the Joker in this film is a little crazy and was arrested at the end.

In The Dark Knight, the Joker (Heath Ledger) again has no name (he also leaves no clues, and his past cannot be known). The appearance is traditional, but distorted: the Joker has light green curly hair, black outlines around his eyes (taken from the comics), a dirty purple suit, dark purple gloves and a white face. The permanent smile became 2 scars carved in the mouth. Throughout the film, the Joker gives two versions of their appearance: their father's bullying and their unhappy family life, but the real reason never revealed. The stories are accompanied by the phrase “Why are you so serious?” (in the original “Why so serious?”), which became the tagline for the film. Falling into waste is abandoned here - the Joker's white face here is sloppily applied makeup, which is wiped off several times during the course of the film. The knife is the new Joker's favorite weapon: in his opinion, knives provide the closest contact with the victim. Also distinguishing features of this villain are dynamite and gasoline. The Joker does not die at the end, making the film a prequel.

Hit himself, having locked himself in the living room for a month, came up with the image of the Joker. He didn't want his Joker to be like Jack Nicholson's Joker. Heath's Joker is selfish, with his unsurpassed facial expressions, with an eternal smile in the form of scars, with the wonderful intonations of a psychopath. In this film, Joker shows all the morality of society. Not Batman, who protects the citizens of the city, but the Joker. Heath Ledger's Joker provides us with the meaning and philosophy of people like Harvey Dent as well as society. The Joker plunges the city into chaos and plays his subtle game.

Unfortunately, the world will never see the Joker as he appeared in The Dark Knight. Heath Ledger, the actor who brilliantly played this role, died shortly after filming ended.

The tragic death of Heath Ledger raised two pressing questions during the film's release: whether to show the recently deceased Heath Ledger as a disfigured Joker speaking his catchphrase, and whether to cut the scene where the Joker plays dead from the final cut. This situation was resolved on the basis that Heath Ledger worked very hard on this role and in any case would have been proud and happy about it.

Description of the Joker

The Joker is a homicidal maniac, Batman's sworn enemy. On this moment The Joker's real name and date of birth remain unknown. However, it is known that he got his white skin and green hair by falling into chemicals. Because of this incident, he had a permanent smile on his face.

The Joker enjoys killing and maiming. The phrase “die of laughter” became his calling card. He committed many crimes, and the number of his victims is in the thousands. The Joker's lack of principles and unpredictability make him a dangerous opponent for any living creature. Anyone can become a target for his crimes. He trusts no one and treats enemies and temporary allies with equal cruelty. The Clown also has a favorite victim - Batman. In him he sees not only a quenching thirst for revenge, but also a worthy opponent with whom he can compete in cunning and play deadly games.

The Joker first appeared in March 1940 in Batman #1. Created by Finger and Robinson, the character was distinguished by great skill in hand-to-hand combat, agility, dexterity and a sophisticated genius-level intellect. Most of the Joker's equipment is stylized as clown props, emphasizing the Joker's image as a clown of the underworld.

Biography of the Joker

At the moment, there are many options for the origin of the Joker. He himself told several stories about his past, each of which was new and contradicted other stories. It is known for certain that the Joker had a wife, Ginny, who is presumably already dead. Otherwise, his past is vague.

The character of the Joker originates in one of the nights in Gotham City, when a group of criminals led by a man in a red hood enters the Ace Chemical Processing Inc. factory to commit a robbery. The gang's plan failed and they encountered police officers and a mysterious man in a bat suit. A firefight began, as a result of which all members of the group were incapacitated, with the exception of Red Hood. The gang leader decided to escape and jumped into a vat of chemical waste. There he swam through sewers and ended up in a river where chemicals were being dumped. The red cap on the fugitive's head helped him survive and escape persecution. Having reached a safe place, the unknown leader removed the red cap and saw the consequences of swimming in chemicals. His face was disfigured. The skin faded and became chalk white, the hair turned green, and the lips took on a ruby tint and stretched into an eerie smile. From that moment on, the already weak mind of the criminal was shaken, and the old personality ceased to exist. A mad maniac-killer was born in the night, christening himself the name Joker.

The Joker considers the tragedy that happened to him to be an accident of fate. In a similar way, he strikes back, choosing random victims for his crimes. He has no principles, his actions are often unpredictable. It is useless to cooperate with him, since at any moment an ally can suffer death at his hand. The Joker recognizes the power in madness, and this makes him one of the most feared villains in the DC Comics universe.
The Joker doesn't have superpowers, he doesn't have millions of dollars. However, his insanity sometimes gives him an inhuman burst of physical energy, allowing him to fight evenly with Batman in hand-to-hand combat. Madness also gives the Clown the ability to resist the effects of various psychotropic substances, which he constantly uses in the comics. The Joker's main weapon is a mixture of brilliant intellect and madness. Thanks to these qualities, he is able to shock his opponent with his actions at any time. In addition, he has leadership qualities and excellent knowledge in the field of explosives, bladed weapons and firearms.

Joker's abilities

Thanks to immersion in chemical waste, the Joker acquired a unique physiology, different from all people. He has various advantages over an ordinary person.

Pain Resistance

It is speculated that after being exposed to the chemicals, the Joker increased his resistance to pain. It is also implied that he is a masochist by nature. All this makes applying pain to him ineffective.

Poison Immunity

The Joker is immune to various poisons, toxins and psychotropic substances. It is also known that his blood is poisoned and can cause harm to another living organism.

Cheating Death

The clown has cheated death many times. Even in a seemingly inevitable, deadly situation, the Joker survives. Throughout the character's existence, he was shot at many times, blown up, electrocuted, and fell from great heights, but always returned to wreak havoc again.

Character Awareness

From time to time the Joker communicates with readers and he seems to be aware that he is a comic book character. However, most characters ignore this as they consider him to be a mentally ill criminal.

Genius level of intelligence

The Joker is portrayed as a very intelligent expert in the fields of chemistry, mechanical engineering, and he is also an expert in explosives, bladed weapons, and firearms.

Master of hand-to-hand combat

Joker has some knowledge of hand-to-hand combat techniques. Over the years of character development, the Joker has become more dexterous and faster, his attacks are chaotic and difficult to predict. It is worth noting that the Clown's level of skill in close combat varied. In various reincarnations, the Joker was either defeated by one blow from Batman, or competed with him, and sometimes defeated him. There is a version that the Joker's strength depends on the degree of his madness. Sometimes he is so crazy that he receives an inhuman surge of physical energy and can fight in hand-to-hand combat with Batman on equal terms.

Joker Equipment

Joker Venom

One of the Joker's calling cards from the first issue is a deadly poison, the victim of which begins to laugh uncontrollably until he dies with a smile on his face. Death is believed to be due to suffocation. There is also a non-lethal version of the poison or a lethal one with a slower effect. The Joker prefers to use such “safe” versions in rare cases. The Clown himself is immune to poison and actively uses it in various forms(liquid, gaseous).

Joker teeth

One of the Joker's favorite gadgets is wind-up teeth. Used for bullying and as a calling card. The Joker often leaves them at crime scenes for Batman. At first, the teeth were not hostile and were an element of the image of a clown. Later, the teeth became explosive and often detonated at the most unexpected moment.

Various Joker gadgets

Razor sharp playing cards, acid flower and other terrifying clown gadgets are the Joker's constant weapons. Such devices amuse him and make him unpredictable.

Joker's electric buzzer

The Joker often uses a modified non-palm buzzer. The device sends a lethal dose of electricity to anyone who comes into contact with it.

Place of residence: Gotham city. He spends most of his time in the Arkham psychiatric hospital for criminals.

Occupation: Professional criminal.

Weight: 86 kg.

Height: 189 cm.

Eyes: Green.

Hair: Green.

All versions of the Joker

External signs: White skin; ruby lips, forever stretched into a wide smile; a long nose, elongated chin.

Sexual orientation: Hetero. Claims that he was married and that his wife died in an accident. He sincerely rejoices when he has to deal with female opponents (which does not prevent him from treating them with no less cruelty than everyone else). He is partial to some of the inhabitants of “Arkham”, which, as a rule, terrifies them. Since the 90s, his constant girlfriend is Harley Quinn, a former Arkham psychiatrist who sacrificed her career and sanity for the Joker and became his obedient slave. He periodically throws her out of the window, but otherwise they have an almost perfect relationship.

Favorite clothes: Purple suit and hat, yellow vest, yellow or green shirt, white gloves.

Favorite food: Fish.

Favorite animal: Hyena.

Story: One terrible night, a gang of criminals, led by a man in a red cap, entered the Ace Chemical Processing Inc. factory to rob a card company that was located in the same building. Within minutes they were discovered and confronted by the police and a mysterious vigilante in a bat suit. All the bandits, except Red Hood, died from police bullets. The leader was able to find a way out of the hopeless situation: jumping over the railing, he jumped into a vat of chemicals, flew through the sewers and found himself in the river where Ace Chemical dumped its toxic waste. The criminal successfully escaped from pursuit and, having climbed ashore, took off his cap. It turned out that swimming in the poisoned liquid had left its traces: from the reflection in the river, a nightmarish clown face stared at the unfortunate man. Chalk white skin, hair the color of artificial grass and ruby lips stretched into a creepy toothy smile - that's what the unlucky robber saw. And from that moment he disappeared... his personality dissolved into madness.

NO ONE knows who this man was before this day. NOBODY, not even himself - in his inflamed brain the true and the imaginary, truth and lies, reality and fantasy were mixed. Was he a cold-blooded thug or an ordinary loser who risked breaking the law to get money for his family? One thing is certain: something bad happened before his visit to Ace Chemical, and the physical transformation was only the last straw for him. (This in no way justifies what that person THEN did.)

The silence of the night was broken by insane laughter: the disfigured criminal appreciated the joke that fate played on him. And I decided to joke back. “I look like an evil clown... Clown? Not a clown, but... JOKER!!!” And the reborn got down to business.

Very soon the newspapers called him nothing less than the Clown Prince of Crime. Operating with stunning ingenuity and ruthlessness, the madman has gained a reputation as the most dangerous creature in Gotham City. Robberies, mass murder, nuclear terrorism, alliances with other supervillains, as well as (brief) world domination and a near-end of the world are just some of the Joker's deeds. He even managed (I'm not kidding) to serve as the UN ambassador for Iran and serve time in a Soviet concentration camp.

The Joker commits his crimes in a special style. Bringing to life the phrase “die of laughter” became his life’s goal. He loves to turn his atrocities into sinister performances, accompanying absurdly cruel actions with buffoonery and clowning. His criminal plans are carefully thought out, but at the same time leave room for improvisation and include many different escape options.

Batman: What do you want from the city?

Joker: I want a new bike... I want to go to Florida... I want...

A scene from Tim Burton's Batman script that was not included in the film itself.

1989 film version: Jack Napier, the mafia's right-hand man, always carries his lucky deck and his favorite purple suit with him. But suddenly the mafia decides to get rid of him (Jack liked the leader’s girlfriend), and sets the police on him. Location of Axis Chemicals. Then, of course, Batman appears. And it's his fault that Jack falls into acid. his face becomes disfigured, his skin takes on a shade of blue. Even plastic surgery doesn't help. They tried to do everything in their power, but alas, now our Jack is doomed to wear a malicious smile on his face. When Jack looked at himself in the mirror after the operation, he lost all sanity. Now he has nothing to lose. Essentially, Jack died and, like a phoenix, was reborn from the ashes as a psychopathic killer. Oh yes… New life– new “business cards” (we need to maintain our image =)), and this is, of course, the Joker card. The weapon certainly looked like a clown prop. And before us appears the same Joker we know today.

Target of crimes: Potentially anyone and everyone. The Joker trusts no one and treats victims, enemies, allies, helpers and those who simply “passed by” with equal cruelty. He is a “wild card” in any human deck, an outcast in any company, not controlled by anyone and not subject to any influence. Those who consider him an ally tend to die first. Those who hire him for “dirty work” must be prepared for unpredictable results. His assistants better keep their mouths shut (“Learn not to ask stupid questions,” says the Joker, throwing one of his subordinates under the wheels of a passing car to the rest of the gang in one of the comics). Decent people...

Decent people have no place in this city. They are better off living somewhere else.

The Joker in Tim Burton's Batman.

The maniacal jester also has a circle of favorite victims. First of all, of course, Batman is the superhero of Gotham, a mysterious night avenger, protector of the innocent. It was from him that the Red Hood ran away, jumping into chemical waste. But we're talking about not about trivial revenge. In most of his comic and screen “incarnations,” the evil harlequin does not consider Batman to be the culprit of his misfortunes; he thinks that fate struck him by chance, and strikes back in exactly the same way - at random. But competing in wits with the Man-Bat quickly became the very essence of the criminal clown's existence. He needs a worthy opponent on whom he can play deadly tricks, and constant defeats only stimulate him. The Joker always says that he will kill the Bat, that he hates the Knight of the Night, etc., but in reality everything is much more complicated - without an opponent his life will lose meaning, because there will be no one to “play” with him.

Joker: Haven't you figured out why I haven't killed you yet?

Batman: No.

Joker: I've been meaning to tell you for a long time... eh-he-he-he-he... I LET you win. This is the game, you know? I make a mess, you catch me... If you win, I go back to Arkham, run away, and it all starts again. But if I win... BOOM! KAPUTT! Game over! And who needs it?

That is why the Joker, although he had many opportunities to put an end to the Black Avenger forever, always delayed the execution until the last moment or gave his enemy a chance to save himself. And he never took the chance to find out true personality mysterious opponent. However, according to many fans, he recognized her a long time ago - it just doesn’t matter to him.

One of the inhabitants of “Arkham”: I say, let’s take off his mask. I want to see his real face.

Joker: Oh, don't be so predictable, for God's sake! THIS is his true face.

From the comic book “Asylum “Arkham”.

Next on the list are the Bat's allies. They are just being exposed greatest danger“The Joker only needs them as a way to hurt Batman.” Then - policemen, lawyers, politicians - everyone who personifies law and order so hated by him (the more famous, the better - the mayor or the police commissioner, for example). Finally, the doctors treating the Joker in the Gotham psychiatric hospital “Arkham” - after another escape, he sometimes visits his doctors to communicate at home (of course, with a fatal outcome).

Causes and purposes of crimes: There is no reason as such. Everything the Joker does is for his own pleasure, experiencing psychotic ecstasy from his sociopathic deeds. His main goal is to prove to everyone that he is both the greatest comedian and the greatest criminal of all time. The Clown Prince of the Underworld is sure that he can achieve this in only one way - by defeating the Bat, and always with the help of some witty trick (a banal shot in the heart is not suitable in any case!). Of course, in many stories the villain pursues mercantile goals, but still money is not the main thing for him. He can rob a bank, and the next day buy 20 thousand “jacks in a box” for, to put it mildly, an obscure reason.

Strengths: The Joker has no superhuman abilities, no international criminal empire, no millions in a Swiss bank, not even very developed muscles. And yet, in the DCU (DC Universe - a universe that exists in the imagination of thousands of authors and artists working for the DC comics company), he is the most terrible and dangerous psychopath, striking fear into the hearts of much more powerful and physically strong villains. The Joker likes to say that his strength is madness, and this is true. He is ready to do anything in order to achieve his goals and realize his plans; dangers and even death do not frighten him (at least in many stories), although the instinct of self-preservation always kicks in at the right moment, saving the psycho from imminent death. His madness manifests itself in an uncontrollably frivolous attitude towards life and reality: he ridicules everything in his path and, having ridiculed it, destroys it. Therefore, he is ready to laugh at both mortal danger and a formidable opponent. Some comics directly state that the Joker is not very aware of what is going on both around him and in his own head (in films, this point is usually not emphasized).

Dr. Ruth Adams, psychiatrist in Arkham: Joker - a special case. Some of us feel that he is beyond treatment. In fact, we're not even sure if he can be called insane... We're starting to think it's some kind of neurological disorder like Torett's syndrome. It's quite possible that what we're actually seeing here is some kind of super sanity, a shiny new modification human thinking, more suitable for urban life at the end of the twentieth century. Unlike you and me, the Joker seems to have no control over the information he receives from his senses from the world around him. He can deal with this chaotic clutter at the entrance only by going with the flow. So on some days he is a mischievous clown, on others he is a psychopathic killer... He reinvents himself every day. He considers himself the ruler of chaos, and the world around him as a theater of the absurd.

Batman: Tell that to his victims.

From the comic book “Asylum “Arkham”.

However, without really delving into the essence of what is happening, the sinister jester navigates a dangerous situation much better than healthy people and knows how to turn the tide of a fight with a seemingly predetermined outcome: his sick brain always suggests unexpected and witty solutions. He has no equal in his ability to find the weak points of his opponents and use their own weapons against them. Finally, the Clown Prince of Crime never cared about such nonsense as the fairness of the fight.

Madness gives him a number of other abilities. As is known, physical strength crazy increases due to the body's adrenaline reaction. Joker never studied martial arts and hand-to-hand combat and in a fight he has nothing special to boast about, but sometimes insane rage gives him the strength to rush at the enemy like an animal and fight on equal terms even with Batman, an expert in all possible martial arts. In addition, the permanent phase shift gave the killer jester unusually agile nervous system: he is not affected by any psychotropic, intoxicating, etc. drugs (although they often later affect the doctors who give them), as well as the “fear gas” invented by a mad scientist nicknamed Scarecrow, and the botanical charms of the villainess Poison Ivy .

Over the years of his criminal life, the Joker has acquired a number of practical skills: he is a good shooter (his favorite tactic is to shoot at every living thing indiscriminately), has a good command of bladed weapons, is well versed in explosives and toxic substances, not to mention various cunning tricks and dastardly tricks, often demonstrates undoubted acting talent and mastery of disguise, and is an expert in all kinds of torture and sadistic methods of brainwashing. But still, his main weapon is ingenuity, unprincipledness and... madness.

Survival: Almost superhuman. He was shot, drowned, blown up, burned, electric current was passed through him, and still he survived.

Relationships with the underworld: As already said, complex. He has no friends or permanent accomplices, because he denies any laws and rules - including those of the criminal world. The Joker has repeatedly joined forces with other supervillains (Penguin, Scarecrow, Lex Luthor, Carnage); every time it all ended in mutual betrayal and fight. However, his eerie aura and nightmarish reputation inspire respectful fear and almost reverence among most criminals, and his power within the walls of Arkham is limitless. The Joker has never lacked help, as he pays well and his plans always work (until the Bat interferes). As a rule, a maniac clown takes into his team two or three strong and stupid thugs who do not ask unnecessary questions and do not think about what they are doing. But, unlike most crime bosses, he loves to do all the dirty work himself.

The Joker is a member of the Unjust Gang, a secret society of supervillains led by Lex Luthor. He is also a member of the Council of Nero (that is the name of the Devil in the DCU), was one of his five lieutenants; however, he later teamed up with Luthor to steal the power of the ruler of hell.

Current status: Healthy, cheerful, crazy, energetic and ready for action.

Joe also appeared in the film industry:

Batman (film, 1966) (film and TV series) - Cesar Romero

Batman (1989) - Jack Nicholson

Batman: Dead End (2003 film) - Andrew Koenig

The Dark Knight (2008) - Heath Ledger

Heath Ledger was the ultimate Joker. It was he who revealed his entire character. But the Joker played a cruel joke on him. On January 22, 2008, Heath Ledger was found dead in his Manhattan apartment. Probable causes of death are suicide or drug overdose. Many believe his death is the Joker's fault. What exactly the role of the Joker influenced the psyche of Heath himself. Even Jack Nicholson believes it. Before filming The Dark Knight, Heath met with Nicholson to share his experience. The first thing Jack said was: “Don’t mess with the Joker, he won’t bring you any good.” Who knows, maybe the Joker tried this...

Well, let's start from the beginning.

Jack falls into acid... I already wrote further) There is no Robin in this film, and Batman remembers that the Joker killed Bruce Wayne's parents when Bruce was still a little boy (by the way, this is interesting... imagine: little Bruce... well, approximately how old was he when they killed him parents? And approximately how old was Joe in those years? Well, let’s say about 25 years old. Now Bruce is 25-30, then Joe’s approximate age is 45-50... but that’s if you look at the ’89 film). In the story, Harley Quinn was killed by the Joker himself (although she was denied a jester costume and a nickname, but let's hope that Harley will show herself in the next Batman).

In 2003, another film appeared, this time an amateur low-budget one, BUT Andrew Koenig (who plays the Joker) impressed many and is considered something between the images of Ledger and Nicholson. The Joker's appearance is reminiscent of the Nolan film, but the Joker here has brown hair instead of green. The character of the Joker in this film is a little crazy and dies at the end.

And finally " The Dark Knight" Here the Joker has no name (in addition, he leaves no evidence, and his past cannot be found out). The appearance is traditional, but distorted: the Joker has light green curly hair, black outlines around his eyes (taken from the comics), a dirty purple suit, dark purple gloves and a white face. The permanent smile became 2 scars carved in the mouth. Throughout the film, the Joker gives two versions of their appearance: his father's bullying and an unhappy family life, but the true reason is never revealed. The stories are accompanied by the phrase “Why are you so serious?” (originally “Why so serious?”), which became the signature to the film. Falling into waste is abandoned here - the Joker's white face here is sloppily applied makeup, which is wiped off several times during the course of the film. The knife is the favorite weapon of the new Joker: in his opinion: “knives provide the closest contact with the victim.” Also distinguishing features of this villain are dynamite and gasoline.

The character of the Joker in this version was greatly influenced by the Batman comic book episodes entitled "The Long Halloween", "The Killing Joke", and "The Man Who Laughs". The character's 1940s co-creator, Jerry Robinson, was hired as a consultant, as was his colleague Bob Kane for Batman (1989).

Grim Joe

Spoiler The tragic death of Heath Ledger raised two pressing questions during the film's release: whether to show the recently deceased Heath Ledger as a disfigured Joker speaking his catchphrase, and whether to cut the scene where the Joker plays dead from the final cut. This situation was resolved on the basis that Heath Ledger worked very hard on this role and in any case would have been proud and happy about it.

Well, we're done with the films.

The following image of the Joker is shown in the recently released game Batman: Arkham Asylum. The Joker is one of Batman's opponents and the game's bosses. Delivered by Batman to Arkham. As it turned out, it was a carefully planned plan to try to kill Batman, but as it turned out, it was not ideal. He starts a riot and seizes power in the hospital. He constantly appears, leaving both audio messages and video messages. He is Batman's main opponent. In one of the meetings, he turns two of his assistants into monsters using a mutagen called "Titan" (in last meeting and himself). The PlayStation 3 version of the game has the ability to play as the Joker (I hope to appear on PC). The appearance of the Joker in the game was most influenced by the Batman movie, comic books and the animated series. The Joker was voiced by actor Mark Hamill (everyone's favorite Jedi also voices the warden in the game Darksiders), who managed to become familiar with this character while working on the animated series about Batman.

Batman appeared back in 1939 in issue 27 of Detective Comics magazine, but he received a series named in his honor only a year later. In the first issue of the new Batman comic series, Batman and Robin fought against a new maniac enemy named the Joker.

Bob Kane's famous clown design was inspired by Conrad Veidt, and more specifically his role as Guyplain in The Man Who Laughs (1928).

The character's co-creator and co-creator Bill Finger planned for the Joker to die immediately at the end of his first appearance. The Joker was stabbed through the heart, but the editor decided to add a scene of the Joker surviving in the last panel of the issue.

The villain became a recurring character and soon earned the title of Batman and Robin's greatest enemy. IN early years he was a ruthless killer - almost all of his crimes were serious and especially serious. Jack Schiff then became Batman's editor, and the Joker mellows out, committing more violent crimes to non-murder so the comics can be marketed to children. But the Joker finally changed in the mid-50s after the introduction of the Comics Code, which prohibited cruelty and violence in comics. From a homicidal maniac to a trickster thief, the Joker became a much funnier and less dangerous enemy for Batman.

The Joker in 1960s comics. The villain's disappearance threat

This bland image of the Joker lasted until the mid-60s, until the character virtually disappeared from the pages of comics after the arrival of editor Julius Schwartz in 1964, who hated the character. The Joker became a much less prominent figure, appearing only occasionally in comics during that half of the decade.

The first full-length film and cartoon of the 60s with the Joker

In the mid-60s, the Joker as a character was on the verge of extinction. However, he was saved by the fact that the image of the campy trickster criminal became popular thanks to his appearance in the Batman series (1966) and the full-length spin-off Batman The Movie. The honor of embodying the Joker outside of comics for the first time went to actor Cesar Romero, in the role of the main enemy bat He appeared in 19 episodes of the series, becoming the series' most frequently used villain (along with the Penguin), and with his role he defined how the character would be perceived outside of the comics for decades to come.

The character also made his first animated appearance in the late 1960s in The Adventures of Batman, voiced by Larry Storch.

1970s - the return of the insane killer and psychopath Joker to the pages of comics

Following the cancellation of the Batman series, in an attempt to sell more Batman comics, the decision was made to return it to a more mature narrative in order to remove the humorous image that the series had made popular.
The Joker, who returned to comics after a four-year hiatus in 1973, returned to his roots as a brutal serial killer, once again becoming a worthy foe for Batman.

It was under the pen of Neal Adams and Denis O'Neill that the Joker began to be portrayed not only as a murderer, but also as a madman. Now, unlike the earlier era, the villain has become less used in stories as a standard opponent of Batman, in order to maintain the status of the main and most dangerous enemy of the Caped Crusader.

The Joker even received his own comic book series in 1975, the first time DC Comics introduced the villain as a main character, but the absence of Batman (and the fact that the Joker was arrested at the end of each issue) led to the series' cancellation after 9 issues.

In the mid-70s, Jenette Kahn took over as DC's editor, and under her leadership, the Joker's popularity only grew.

Famous stories of the time, such as "Joker Fish", fully reveal his mental instability and his penchant for murder. The Joker becomes a character who is truly scary, he is no longer an easy target, defeating him becomes truly meaningful. This period in comics history had the biggest impact on the character we know.

Cartoon series of the 70s - Joker trickster

All the darkness and cruelty of the Joker from the comics did not change the perception of the character in other media at all. For most people, he remained a trickster, and his appearances in animated series only reinforced the image created by Cesar Romero. So the Joker appeared in several episodes of the animated series “The New Cases of Scooby Doo” (1972-1973), in which “Mystery Inc.” crossed paths with Batman and Robin.

The Joker also had cameos in the children's animated series “Super Friends” and in the animated series “The New Adventures of Batman,” a kind of continuation of the main series.

Joker in 80s comics. Reboot of the DC Comics universe

Although readers saw the birth of the dark and crazy Joker in the 70s, it was in the 80s that he reached the peak of his villainy. It was time big changes- In 1985, DC Comics rebooted their universe during the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths, and subsequent Batman stories became darker and grimmer, as we are used to seeing the legends of the Dark Knight now.

Together with Batman, he also took the path of darkness. main enemy, who took his conflict with Man-Bat to a more violent level in the late '80s. Released in 1988, The Killing Joke not only revealed the origin story (one of many) of the Joker, but also showed his cruelty towards Batman's loved ones, which left Barbara Gordon, aka Batgirl, paralyzed.

That same year, in A Death in the Family, the Joker captured Jason Todd, the second Robin, and beat him to death with a crowbar. The Joker was no longer just Batman's main villain, he became a personal threat to his loved ones.

The 80s are the first serious film. Jack Nicholson as the Joker

In 1989, the world finally saw a big-budget adaptation of Batman from director Tim Burton. In it, the Joker became the robber Jack Napier, who killed Bruce Wayne's parents. Jack fell into a vat of chemicals while running away from Batman. Jack Nicholson's Joker combined two versions of the character - visually inspired by the robber design that Adams and O'Neal created in the early 70s, but combined with comic tricks and gadgets from Romero's Joker and the image of a violent maniac that he had character in the 70s and 80s. But even this version was initially received with hostility; such a dark incarnation of the character was unusual for the viewer; in the end, the previous live incarnation of the character in the Batman series was a huge success and established what the character should look like.

Also in 1989, the character made his first appearance in a video game, as the Joker appeared in the second Batman game, Batman: The Caped Crusader, for various gaming systems such as the ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64.

90s - Joker is Batman's main enemy

Gothic Batman from Tim Burton rendered big influence In the comics, throughout the 90s, the character of the Joker did not change and was based on the incarnation from the now cult film, he was an insane trickster killer.

Also during this period, he again began to appear more often as an adversary of Batman, of course, not as often as in the early years.

Perhaps this decade's most iconic moment for the comic book character will be “Images” (Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #50), which retells Batman's first encounter with the Joker for the first time since the universe was rebooted following Crisis on Infinite Earths. Another important plot of “Going Sane” is about what would happen to the Joker if Batman were to die—returning to a normal, non-criminal life.

Cartoons from the 90s. New Joker

The '90s saw one of the best incarnations of the character outside of comics. Conceived as a spin-off and inspired by the films “Batman” and “Batman Vol. returns,” the animated series was released in 1992 and in the second episode, “Christmas with the Joker,” introduced a new incarnation of the character - the Clown King of Crime. The hero was voiced by actor Mark Hamill.

Hamill portrayed the character as both sinister and wildly comedic, and despite being heavily inspired by Nicholson, the character was adopted by mainstream audiences, with Mark Hamill still voicing the Joker in various DC animated projects.

The animated series 'Batman: The Animated Series' was a real breakthrough, it brought a hitherto unprecedented level of violence and darkness to Western animation, while remaining for children's ratings, and at the same time created its own animated universe. In addition to all of the above, the cartoon significantly expanded the Joker's mythology by adding a new partner to him - Harley Quinn. The former Arkham Asylum psychiatrist who fell in love with the Joker and turned to crime first appeared in the 1992 episode "The Joker's Servitude," but the character became so popular that she was introduced into the comics in 1999 in the "No Man's Land" story arc, allowing her to become Joker's regular accomplice.

Comics of the 2000s - The Joker is Batman's personal enemy

As the popularity of the Batman films faded away (thanks to 'Batman and Robin and Batman Forever'), the character of the Joker ceased to resemble Nicholson's image, moving away from the criminal image towards Batman's personal enemy - he became obsessed with the idea of proving that he and They are similar to Batman, trying to break the mind and will of Bruce Wayne. Released in 2001, the plot of “Emperor Joker” had big success, in which the Joker gained Mr. Mixy's power to manipulate reality and used it to torture and kill Batman (before he realized he couldn't live without confronting the Dark Knight).

The 2000s were rich in non-comic book incarnations of the character that left their mark on popular culture. Hamill's Joker has made it into the 21st century, appearing in Justice League and its sequel Justice League. Without Borders,” but a completely different Joker was presented in the new animated series “Batman” (2004-2008).

He was portrayed by Kevin Michael Richardson, and while this Joker was still based on Hamill's version, the design was heavily redesigned to highlight his madness, complete with a jester's hat hairstyle.

Mark Hamill returned to voice the Joker in 2009 in the video game Batman: Arkham Asylum, basing his performance on the cartoon. The game was a huge success, and Hamill agreed to voice the game's sequels, Arkham City and Arkham Knight. And the Joker from the Arkham series of games is definitely a great example of this character.

Despite all these memorable images of the Joker, the character's most important incarnation in the 2000s will be his reappearance on the big screen. The success of the first part of the Batman reboot did not make us wait long for a sequel, and in 2008 a sequel called “The Dark Knight” was released. In the new film by Christopher Nolan, the Joker became the antagonist of Batman; this role went to Heath Ledger. The darkness and realism of Nolan's trilogy made the Joker a true psychopathic killer with corresponding jokes and obsessive attempts to destroy Batman morally. In some places, Ledger's Joker carries madness in his appearance, but at the same time promotes philosophical thoughts. And somewhere he simply behaves like a terrorist, one thing is clear that Nolan showed a very deep and interesting villain, whose actions and deeds you can think about. The actor himself said that this role was very difficult for him and exhausted him mentally and physically. It's no surprise that Heath Ledger won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, unfortunately posthumously. On January 22, 2008, Heath Ledger was found dead, the official cause of death was an accident - an unintentional overdose of prescribed medications.

Comics 2010 - Joker's attack on the Bat-family

After the new reboot of the DC Universe in 2011, the Joker disappeared from Batman comics for a whole year before returning in a new Bat-line crossover in 2012. The “Death of the Family” crossover united all the upcoming Bat-family series when the Joker began to attack the Dark One's loved ones Knight, believing that his family and allies had weakened Batman as a hero. The character seemed to die at the end of the story, but this turned out not to be the case, and the Joker returned again in 2014 in the "Endgame" storyline, which theorized that the Joker could be immortal with newfound regeneration. At the end of the plot, both main rivals die, but after some time it turns out that Batman survived, but the fate of the Joker was unknown until he recently returned in the “War of Jokes and Riddles” plot in DC Rebirth. Also, one of the mysteries of Rebirth was the possibility that there are as many as three Jokers. But we still have to find out.

Joker in games and cartoons of the 2010s

In the tens, we received a considerable number of incarnations of the character. There was also his appearance in the prequel game to the Arkham series, “ Arkham Origins”, where Troy Baker became the voice actor. The Joker made his debut in the “Lego Batman” series of games, where he was voiced by Christopher Corey Smith, who was also inspired by Hamill’s Joker, but without violence (the game is still 6+).

Also, the Joker, or rather a character very similar to him and who uses his character, antics, etc., but who was never called by a canonical name, appeared in the Gotham series, where he was played by Cameron Monaghan, who demonstrated an ordinary psychopath. There is a lot of controversy surrounding the next big screen actor to play the Joker, namely Jared Leto. The character appeared in the film “Suicide Squad”, playing far from the most important minor role. Therefore, it is still difficult to judge how poorly or well Leto did. His Joker combines the past habits of film incarnations - he is mad, he is a modern gangster, but added to all this is his kind of love for Harley Quinn. Also in 2016, Mark Hamill returned to the role of the Joker in the animated film adaptation of the comic book “The Killing Joke.” And the latest incarnation at the moment can be considered Zach Galifianakis as a voice actor in the cartoon “The LEGO Movie: Batman”.

He first appeared in a comic called Batman#1 (April 25, 1940) and was created by Jerry Robinson, Bob Kane and Bill Finger. Credit for creating the Joker is debatable; Kane and Robinson took credit for creating the Joker's design, acknowledging Finger's writing contributions. Although the Joker was intended to be a one-time character and was supposed to die during his first appearance, he was retained and eventually became Batman's nemesis.

The Joker's facial nerves are paralyzed, creating the appearance of a permanent smile. His green hair and nails, rosy red lips, and chalky white skin are directly due to exposure to chemicals. The Joker's face in the mouth area is “decorated” by large scars in the form of a terrible smile. Joker is 198 cm tall and weighs 73 kilograms.

Biography

The Joker's past remains shrouded in mystery to this day, despite the character's seventy-year history. DC continues to adhere to Alan Moore's theory about the sinister clown's multi-variant past. Perhaps even the Joker himself no longer remembers who he was before the night he put on the Red Hood. According to the accepted canonical version, the man who became the Joker (perhaps he was an unsuccessful comedian, and perhaps a gangster) fell into acid, frightened by Batman, when he took part in a robbery of a card factory in the Red Hood costume. As a result, he went crazy, got white skin, black circles around his eyes and green hair, and a smile was forever frozen on his face.

Some time later, after the Hood incident, a warehouse full of smiling corpses was discovered in Gotham. And on the TV screens a strange character appeared in a purple suit, who announced in advance who and when he was going to kill. Batman and Commissioner Gordon had to make a lot of efforts to stop the Joker, who dealt with the owners of the ill-fated plant and intended to poison the Gotham reservoir. As a result, the villain ended up in the Arkham mental hospital, whose patients he had recently released onto the city streets.
Later, the Joker got a partner, Harley Quinn, dressed in a harlequin costume and madly in love with the maniac. Also, according to some versions, he had a pregnant wife, Jenny, who died in an accident, and the Joker sometimes worried about her.

Easy targets

The Joker begins shooting with a high-powered sniper rifle, killing Mayor Dickerson and the Superintendent, all in an effort to force the city's residents to stay home during the Christmas holiday. He then causes major crimes in Gotham, before revealing himself that he planted bombs throughout the city as a "Christmas gift" for Batman, causing him to rush to save a large number of Christmas shoppers from death. The Joker then begins shooting in a number of large locations, where he kills several detectives, only to be shot by Sawyer's Maggie, after which his bomb explodes, but people have already been evacuated from the toy store, ultimately the Joker comes to his senses already in the hospital and laughs at the bloody the massacre he caused.

Renaissance

In the comic Batman#655, The Joker is shot in the face by a mentally ill police officer, leaving him disabled for a period of time. After completing the intensive plastic surgery and some physical therapy, the Joker appeared in a comic book Batman No. 663 with a completely new look. While he was in the ICU, he developed an even more dangerous form of his Venom, giving it to Harley Quinn to kill her former partners to signal spiritual rebirth. Later, he went berserk, attempting to kill Harley Quinn, which would climax in his revival, but Batman stopped him, and through these events, the Joker joins the Black Glove.

Faces of Death

After the events Flashpoint, Joker story moments may have changed, but the Joker's personality has not changed in New 52.

In the comic Detective Comics #1, it appears as main suspect in a number of murders in Gotham, he used a black shirt, and at the end of this comic, we see that his face was cut off by the Puppeteer.

Capabilities

Due to his mental state, the Joker is immune to fear as he takes everything as a joke. He also has immunity to poison, as a result of prolonged exposure to chemicals. The fear gas that Scarecrow is famous for has no effect on him, and the Visionary was unable to hypnotize him in the comic. Birds of Prey#121. The Joker and Poison Ivy have been shown to be immune to chemicals each other. He also has a very high pain tolerance. In the comic Birds of Prey#16, The Joker had a cast on his leg, but he walked as if it wasn't even there. He laughed after getting shot in the comic Batman: Dark Victory. He shows no signs of pain after several batarangs cut his mouth in the comic Batman Confidential. It seems that in most cases he simply enjoys the pain, provoking others to hit him; thus, to some extent, he can be described as a sadomasachist. He was known to survive explosions and accidents on several occasions. His bones heal quickly, and it has been hinted in a couple of comics that he does not physically age.

Joker is a brilliant inventor and chemist. Using a seemingly ridiculous but actually very dangerous arsenal of comedy-themed weapons, examples include his patented laughing gas, a flag pistol, exploding fart pillows, an acid-spraying flower (which is usually found on his jacket), a hand-held stun gun, sharp as razor cards, poison pies and exploding cigars. The Joker is immune to his own poison, as well as other types of similar toxins. Joker is an excellent shooter; he almost never misses. His accuracy was also proven when he shot the ropes of suspended hostages to distract Batman. The Joker has sometimes demonstrated above-average hand-to-hand combat skills, sometimes even taking Batman by surprise with his punch.

The Joker does not possess any direct superhuman abilities. However, he does display several superhuman abilities. Arc of History Arkham Asylum indicates that that he is "supernormal"; this means that he sees the reality of the universe without any personal illusions, and that his personality can change everything to suit the circumstances, allowing him to be excellent at pretending and passing off lies as truth, since he truly believes what he says. Also, the Joker very often manages to cheat his death. People have repeatedly assumed that he is dead, but he came back again and again to wreak havoc. Superpower is controversial issue towards the Joker, but the Joker's insanity, or his mood, leaves him immune to the Specter's judgments, although Batman at one point explains this by saying that the Joker doesn't actually know what is right and wrong.

The Joker also has a tendency to break the fourth wall and seems to have a sense of heightened awareness of being a comic book character. He is the only character who directly addresses the reader. The Joker also knows that he is the perfect opposite of Batman. In the comic Legends of the Dark Knight#65-68, Joker, thinks he killed Batman and there is no point in being the Joker anymore, he resorts to plastic surgery and tries to lead a normal, sane life. However, upon discovering that Batman is still alive, he returns to madness and continues his criminal career.
