In 1902, the tsarist government refused to allow Maxim Gorky to be elected an honorary academician. As a sign of protest, Korolenko and Chekhov refused the title of academicians. For Chekhov, this was not only a social act, but also a personal one. He wrote in a statement that when Gorky was elected, he saw him and was the first to congratulate him. And now, when the Academy of Sciences announced that the elections were invalid, it turns out that he, Chekhov, as an academician, admits this. “I congratulated him heartily, and I recognize the elections as invalid - such a contradiction does not fit in my mind, I could not reconcile my conscience with it,” he wrote to the Academy of Sciences. “And after much thought, I could only come to one decision... to relinquish my title of honorary academician.” This is what a man of honor does. He will not attribute the blame to circumstances beyond his control, but will act in accordance with his demonstrated personality quality - honor.

This quality began to manifest itself in people with the separation of privileged groups from the community - a princely squad was formed, a collective code of unwritten rules was created, which implied the observance of honor. Honor meant following a system of rules that distinguished this group from others and emphasizing her high status. The rules of knightly honor were excessively complex. This is how historian A.Ya. writes about it. Gurevich: “The knight plays his role, not for a minute forgetting about the audience in front of whom he is “playing”, be it the king or his direct lord, the lady or a knight like himself.” Knightly etiquette regulated every gesture, even on the battlefield, where the knight was shackled by many regulations: you cannot fight with a less armed enemy, you cannot stab in the back, you cannot be the first to make a military report to the king, and so on.

Disagreements can arise between honor and conscience. In Pushkin’s “little tragedy” Stingy Knight“The father-knight, in his greed, betrays the rules of knighthood. AND I. Gurevich writes: “Wealth is a sign testifying to the valor, generosity, and breadth of the lord’s nature. This sign can be realized only if it demonstrates the specified qualities. Thus, supreme moment in the enjoyment of wealth is its squandering in the presence of the maximum number of people participating in its absorption, receiving a share of the lord’s bounty.” The son (Albert), due to his father's greed, cannot follow the code of knightly honor. It is honor that pushes the latter to criminal thoughts, to thoughts against conscience. Disagreements of conscience and honor make the Duke exclaim: “On what days did I put on the chain of dukes!” - “ Terrible century, terrible hearts!”

In our time of heyday of selfishness, ignorance and self-interest, when many elite groups have disappeared, it has become more difficult to be a “slave of honor.” Samurai X says: “There are few people left in this world who are capable of giving their lives for the honor and right to be called a man. To do this you need to have considerable courage... You are just trying to survive like animals, and for this you need neither honor nor dignity.” V. Vysotsky also sang: “I’m annoyed that the word “honor” is forgotten and that in honor there are slander behind one’s back.” Yuri Bondarev sadly echoes him: “The flower of the people died in the war. Few of the best survived. And the children have not become better than their fathers, although one cannot condemn any generation as a whole. That may be why now few people risk throwing themselves into an embrasure, defending their own and others’ honor...”

But this does not mean the abolition of honor - people in goodness, who are pretty tired of “pornography and horror films” modern life, is getting bigger and bigger. The loss of such concepts as “honor” is fraught with numerous troubles for society. People become superficial, indifferent and dishonest. “Shame and honor are like a dress: the more shabby they are, the more careless you treat them,” said Lucius Apuleius. The eye rejoices when the honor of an athlete is shown in stadiums. In football, when a player from the other team is injured, the opposing team in possession of the ball will voluntarily kick the ball out of the field or pass it to an opponent to allow the injured person to recover and receive medical attention. After putting the ball into play, the opponent, like a gentleman, returns the ball back to the opposite side.

A man of honor cannot be called a conformist who betrays himself under the influence of the group . A conformist tries to be pliable, compliant, he changes his psychological attitudes, beliefs, opinions, perceptions and behavior in accordance with those that have taken root in society or a given group. At the same time, conformity can be personally adopted and exaggerated, for show. It happens that a person, wanting to avoid conflict or trouble, demonstratively agrees with the group (company management, party), but in reality, deep down, he remains unconvinced. This is ostentatious conformism. A man of honor is a principled person who follows only the unwritten rules of any group or structure when they fully correspond to his views and principles. He is not able to “betray his soul” and adapt to rules that are unfavorable to him, just to get to the “trough” of the elite group. True honor is the decision to do in all circumstances what will not cripple the lives of others.

Matters of honor do not know trifles. For whom honor is a trifle, everything else in life is also not important. For a man of honor, any little thing that affects his honor becomes no small thing. After all, honor is an exaggerated morality, devoid of tolerance for the slightest insults. Honor does not recognize illusions, being a public, not a personal assessment; if others have discovered the fact of an encroachment on it, it will unconditionally recognize this and will strive to restore its previous state. Being demonstrative, she has nothing to hide, honor is always ready to stand up for herself. Eduard Asadov wrote: “But my honor is stubborn, like armor. And no one ever, either openly or accidentally, dares to offend me, either with a secret gesture or with a secret deed.”

A man of honor understands and realizes that behind his personal honor is the honor of his peers, and, therefore, he must behave uncompromisingly and militantly. By defending your officer's honor, you are defending the officer's honor in general. Thus, an officer who refused a duel could not be tolerated in his regiment. The individual is sacrificed to the general, and a man of honor, without hesitation and without hesitation, rushes to defend his honor. He says to himself: “The whole world is mired in lies and flattery. I accept this fight. I put on a mask of honor, waging war with myself."

The concept of moral consciousness and the category of ethics, in their content and the nature of the moral attitude reflected in it, are similar to the concept of dignity. Like dignity, the concept of honor reveals a person’s attitude towards himself (!) and the attitude towards him from society (?). However, unlike the concept of dignity, moral value personality in the concept of honor is associated with a person’s specific social position, the type of his activity and the moral merits recognized for him. If the idea of personal dignity is based on the principle of moral equality of all people, then the concept of honor, on the contrary, evaluates people differently, which is reflected in their reputation. Accordingly, honor requires a person to maintain (justify) the reputation that he himself or the team to which he belongs has. Historically, the concept of honor arose in the moral consciousness of society in the form of the idea of ancestral and class honor (a moral requirement that prescribes a person a way of life and action that does not humiliate the dignity of a certain class or family).... According to “... but in contrast to dignity, the concept honor is based not on the principle of moral equality of all people, but on their differential assessment (depending on social status personality, class, national, professional and collective affiliation or reputation). The criterion for this assessment and the requirements for a person associated with his honor have changed historically. Feudal honor was class-based and required compliance with the norms of behavior of the “noble” class. Bourgeois honor is somehow associated with private property. In a socialist society, only national, professional, partly class, as well as collective and individual honor are preserved. The latter is associated with personal merits, which are based on a person’s real merits to other people and society.” Usually, the concept of honor is associated, for some unknown reason, with privileges, snobbery, conceit, arrogance, vanity... Objectively, the concept of honor is inextricably linked with the concept of integrity, but for some reason there is not a word about this connection in the dictionary on ethics. Associative block. "I have!" - they say, breaking off relations with a scoundrel.
