From February 24 to March 31, the State Tretyakov Gallery will host the lecture and art program “Biblical Stories in the Fine Arts” (subscription No. 39, 14+).

The five topics of this lecture series consistently talk about the structure of the Bible, about the plots of the Old and New Testaments, read and creatively reinterpreted by artists different countries and eras. This makes it possible not only to remember and learn the basic biblical themes, but also to immerse yourself in the experience of great stories, to make the events of Sacred history close and understandable to any person - after all, this is exactly how a variety of masters approached these topics, for many of whom the reflection of the biblical text became the work of their whole lives.

Lecturer: Vera Vsevolodovna Donets - senior researcher at the Tretyakov Gallery, art critic, lecturer, author of a number of monographs and articles on the history of Russian fine art.

The first topic of the lecture series introduces the centuries-old tradition of reflection biblical stories in the fine arts - from the early Christian era to the present day. It will briefly examine the structure and order of biblical texts, and explain the content and theological significance of the books of the Old and New Testaments. Listeners will see works by outstanding masters telling about the mysterious greatness of the first days of the creation of the world, about the creation of man and his fall, about subsequent events of Old Testament history.

The lecture will feature works by famous painters - Michelangelo Buonarroti, Masaccio, Lucas Cranach, Pieter Bruegel, as well as icon painters - Andrei Rublev and others.

The second lecture of the series is devoted to one of the most striking and sublime topics in the history of art - images Holy Virgin, Our Lady, Queen of Heaven. The New Testament does not tell much about the events of the life of the Virgin Mary, although we see Her image in the most important stories dedicated to the earthly life of Christ, right up to the Crucifixion, Resurrection and Ascension. What was not included in the Gospel texts - the story of the Nativity and childhood of the Virgin Mary, the Dormition of the Virgin Mary and subsequent miracles - turned out to be in the world artistic tradition thanks to additional sources recognized by the Church (apocrypha). This, as well as such concepts as canon and iconography, will be discussed at the lecture, where iconographic images, frescoes by Giotto, paintings by Raphael, Robert Campin and other artists will be shown.

The theme of the lecture reflects the basis of the Gospel stories - this is the earthly journey of the Savior from His Nativity in the Bethlehem cave to the Crucifixion, Resurrection and Ascension. The four canonical books of Matthew, Mark, John and Luke have inspired artists for centuries to create masterpieces full of a living sense of faith and deep reflection. Works of art not only illustrated gospel events, they carried the spirit of the time in which they were created. It is no coincidence that the heroes of biblical tales are so similar to the contemporaries of this or that artist. Great Events Christian history remained relevant throughout the history of art. This will be shown by the works of Duccio, P. Bruegel, Rembrandt, A. Ivanov, I. Repin, V. Polenov and many others.

The theme of the sacrificial suffering of the Savior in a series of biblical stories is the only one where events can be traced literally by day and hour. Each day of Holy Week, the last before Easter, receives its own name and its own iconography.

Many artists turned to the theme of the Passion (suffering) of the Lord as the most important in their work. It was in these events that they found ideas and feelings close to the soul of every person - readiness for sacrificial love, humility and fortitude, the height of faith and opposition to evil. One of those masters for whom the Passion Cycle became central to his work was N.N. Ge; His works are given special attention in the lecture. In addition, works by Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Pieter Bruegel, Byzantine and Russian icons will be shown.

The greatest event in biblical history - the salvation of the human race - will begin for listeners of the lecture series from the same moment as described by the evangelists: at dawn Sunday The myrrh-bearing women go to the cave where the body of Christ was left. There they see a stone rolled away from the entrance and an angel proclaiming the news of the Resurrection. The tradition of depicting the greatest subject in Christianity in Western and Eastern (Byzantine-Russian) iconography differs markedly, which will be discussed in the lecture.

In addition, paintings will be shown telling about further events- meetings of the risen Christ with his disciples, the famous “Assurance of Thomas”, the Ascension of the Lord on the Mount of Olives. In addition to icon paintings, medieval miniatures, engravings by A. Durer, paintings by H. Memling, A. Ivanov, N. Ge, V. Polenov will be presented.

The New Testament includes not only the four Gospels, but also the apostolic books - the Acts and Epistles of the Apostles. They talk about further events, preaching works and miracles of the disciples of Christ that followed the day of Pentecost, the Descent of the Holy Spirit. On that day they became apostles - messengers of Christ, carrying His teachings throughout the world.

Vivid and exciting events from the acts of the apostles will be presented by works by Masaccio, Caravaggio, Raphael, and icon paintings. The end of the lecture series will be the mysterious images of the Apocalypse - prophetic visions Apostle John the Theologian, who, by the will of God, saw menacing and solemn pictures of the end of earthly times, Last Judgment and the greatness of the Kingdom of Heaven, which “will have no end.”
