Ban of the Genghis Khan group in the USSR. "Genghis Khan": the group and its creative path

Dschinghis Khan (Genghis Khan) is a German musical group created in 1979 specifically to perform at Eurovision. At the Eurovision Song Contest in 1979 he took 4th place, after which he became very popular not only in Germany, but also in Eastern Europe, including the USSR, as well as in Australia and Japan.
Many of the group's songs are dedicated to exoticism and stereotypes about different countries: Latin America, Russia, Mongolia, the Middle East.
The group was created literally 6 weeks before the German national selection for Eurovision (late January-early February 1979), where at the end of 1978 composer Ralf Siegel presented the song of the same name (Ralph Siegel himself sang on the demo version). After winning the national selection, the group was entrusted with representing Germany at the Eurovision Song Contest, where it took 4th place with the song “Dschinghis Khan”.
In 1988, former Dschinghis Khan vocalist Leslie Mandoki and Hungarian pop group Neoton Familia vocalist Eva Csepregi collaborated on the official song "Korea" at the opening of the Olympic Games in Seoul.

In 1999, four songs from the disc “Dschinghis Khan: The History of Dschinghis Khan” were remixed and produced by the famous German producer David Brandes.
In 2005, the group got back together (with the exception of Mandoka and Potgieter) and on December 17 gave a big concert at the Olimpiysky sports and concert complex in Moscow as part of the Legends of Retro FM festival. About 30 thousand spectators attended the concert; it was broadcast by Channel One through the Orbita and Orbita-2 systems.
In 2006, the group undertook a tour dedicated to the memory of Steve Bender - he died of cancer. As part of the tour, the musicians performed concerts in Ulaanbaatar and Kyiv.
In 2007, the group released the album 7 Leben (Russian: “7 Lives”). It included both new compositions and adaptations of the first hits (Dschinghis khan, Moskau, Rocking son of Dschinghis Khan).
In 2009, the group attended the opening of Eurovision.

At the end of 2010, the group toured in Khabarovsk and participated in the “New Year’s Disco” in Kyiv at the invitation of the 1+1 TV channel, replenished with the young vocalist Igei.
In June 2011, the group performed in Gelendzhik at a carnival in honor of the opening of the holiday season.
Interesting Facts:
The paradox of the group's popularity in the Soviet Union was that the Soviet public did not have the opportunity to become familiar with the visual image of the group, thanks to which it became famous in no small part in the West.
In an interview with TVC TV presenter Alexandra Glotova, the group’s producer Heinz Gross said that in the 80s the group “Dschinghis Khan” was banned in the USSR and was accused of anti-communism and nationalism.

The world has been waiting for their return for a long time, Dschinghis Khan is back on stage!

In the 13th century, the Mongol leader Genghis Khan (Dschinghis Khan in German) and his horde of horsemen conquered numerous lands around the world known to people at that time. Many centuries later, a colorful, historical and costumed music group from Munich made a similarly stunning land grab in the music world. Dschinghis Khan collected all the most significant awards, their records went gold and platinum in 20 countries, and each of them sold at least 20 million copies. They attended more than 240 television programs, and their smiles shone on the covers of the world's leading magazines. Dschinghis Khan is rightfully considered the most successful German group. And now the sensational news: Dschinghis Khan is back and will perform on stages all over the world once again!

A young journalist described the Dschinghis Khan phenomenon in a youth magazine published in April 1980:

“Some people practice their playing day and night for years. They want to get on television or at least in a recording studio. As a result, all their efforts end with performances at the city sports club and at the ball of the local fire department. Few people succeed in unraveling the mystery of pop music. However, real geniuses appear in this genre too. Such as the “super group” Dschinghis Khan. This team released a hit before they even existed. Their self-titled single "Dschinghis Khan" is rhythmic and perfect for dancing. But despite all this, he went gold. In fact, the secret of their success is not only in music. The main role in this was played by: a talented producer, a talented lyricist, a talented choreographer, a talented costume designer, a talented and witty group of performers and a crowd of talented teenagers with a lot of pocket money. All of this together created a hit.”

The band's producer and composer, Ralph Siegel, didn't expect anything else. In the early days of Dschinghis Khan, he was a generator of amazing ideas. Ralph had his sights set on winning the Eurovision Song Contest, the most famous and significant trophy in pop music, which was broadcast throughout Europe. His composition about the Mongol leader Genghis Khan was ideal for the competition - it was a mixture of a jackhammer rhythm with a simple but at the same time brilliant text:

Chin, Chin, Genghis Khan...

Hey, horseman - hey, people - hey, horseman, rush forward!

Chin, Chin, Genghis Khan...

Come on, brothers - drink, brothers - fight, brothers, again and again!

(Oddly enough, this text was not composed by Goethe, but by the producer’s friend, Dr. Bernd Meininger, an agricultural ecologist.)

It is obvious that listeners cannot be retained by music and lyrics alone. Ideally, singers should be dressed in colorful costumes and perform crazy dances with lots of sparkling effects during their performances. Siegel quickly found a similar group of performers. He was in a hurry for a reason - it was February, and already on March 31, 1979, the Eurovision Song Contest was supposed to begin in Jerusalem. He looked for faces with striking features, similar to Genghis Khan or at least reminiscent of him. Siegel managed to find the following: Wolfgang (former dental student turned art teacher, studio performer, composer and producer) and Henriette Heichel (dental assistant, model and figure skater), Leslie Mandoki (Hungarian jazz performer with a mustache and a thick mane of hair), Louis Potgieter (professional dancer from South Africa), Edina Pop (singer from Hungary) and Steve Bender (the one with the bald head). The group began its existence. This is not the time to hesitate. Everything went exactly according to plan. Choreographer Hanns Winkler planned to create a grandiose production. Every movement was worked out and memorized. At the same time, designer Marc Mano in Munich worked on creating incomparable costumes, which are considered iconic to this day. Four weeks after their formation, Dschinghis Khan wins the selection of the German entry for the Eurovision Song Contest by a huge margin. Two weeks later the group is already in Jerusalem. Fourth place at the Eurovision Song Contest was their first breakthrough on the international stage. A few weeks later, their single "Dschinghis Khan" was certified gold, selling over 500,000 copies. At the time, this would have been considered an amazing achievement. The compositions following the single repeated the success of the first song: “Moskau”, “Rocking Son Of Dschinghis Khan”, “Hadschi Halef Omar”, “Rom”. Song records have been certified gold and platinum across the globe, from Germany to 20 other countries, including Japan, Australia, Korea, the Netherlands, Belgium, Israel, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, Norway and Finland. . The music of Dschinghis Khan captured the hearts and minds of his fans even in the republics of the USSR. In the “red” territory, Dschinghis Khan's records sold even more than in all other places combined!

In Israel and Japan, the group constantly held the leading position in the rating of performers. Surprisingly, the Japanese rankings were dominated by a composition in German, something that no other performer has managed to do to this day. Dschinghis Khan won the German “Bambi” award, received the “Golden Lion” from the Luxembourg radio, and the “Golden Europe” from the German radio station Europawelle Saar. They so incredibly easily gained fabulous fame around the world. Dschinghis Khan became a symbol of popular music "Made in Munich".

After the release of two albums and shortly before the start of sales of the third album, "Wir sitzen alle im selben Boot" ("We're all in the same boat"), Steve Bender left the band in 1981 for a number of personal reasons. Despite this heavy blow, Dschinghis Khan released two more hits: "Pistolero" and "Loreley".

Dancer and band leader, Louis Hendrik Potgieter died due to AIDS in his hometown, Cape Town in 1993. After this, the group released many remixes and medleys of their hits, entitled "Huh Hah Dschinghis Khan" (1993) and "History of Dschinghis Khan" (1999).

South Africa, 1993.

“Louis, we will remember you, you will forever remain in our hearts.”

Heinz Gross, a music manager from Augsburg, tried to reunite Dschinghis Khan. In the fall of 2005, the slightly aged performers united. Together with his new and old friends from Russia, Heinz Gross organized a “Reunion Concert” in Moscow on December 17, 2005, at which Dschinghis Khan performed. To create the stage at the Olimpiysky sports complex, 26 trucks filled with the necessary equipment were needed, weighing in total more than 300 tons. Core members Steve Bender, Edina Pop, Henriette Strobel (formerly Heichel) and Wolfgang Heichel, along with 72 additional singers, performed all their hits from the 1979 album Dschinghis Khan and were rewarded with thunderous applause from the nearly 30,000 spectators. Channel One broadcast their performance all over the world. The performance received the status of the best music show of the year. On May 7, 2006, Steve Bender left the band after dying of cancer. This was a heavy blow for the remaining three members of the group. Should the group cease to exist? After thinking for a long time, the members of the team decided to continue their performance in memory of Steve Bender and Louis Hendrik Potgieter.

Germany, May 2006.

“Steve, you are no longer with us, but you will always be there, no matter where we are now!”

On July 15, 2006, the group performed at the Ulaanbaatar Stadium in Mongolia along with a group of dancers, "The Legacy of Genghis Khan". As the main group of the event, Genghis Khan "celebrated" the 800th birthday of Genghis Khan along with his great-great-great-grandson. It was an extraordinary show with horses, camels and dancers against a stunning backdrop with lots of special effects.

Clear and intelligent use of imagery and a variety of choreographic techniques have always been the hallmarks of Dschinghis Khan's performances. And they remain so to this day! The dancers of the group “The Legacy of Genghis Khan” continue to perform on stage together with Edina Pop, Henriette Strobel and Wolfgang Heichel. This world-class group takes their performance back to the time of the greatness of the Mongols, performing various acrobatic stunts and beautiful dances. Clos Caprate, a young and talented dancer, became the group’s choreographer, joining the group “The Legacy Of Genghis Khan” to their performances. One look at them will be enough to realize all the mastery of the dramaturgy of their performances. The first will be Eltuya, a formidable warrior. She is a mad warrior and the daughter of a khan. He wanted a son, but his wife gave birth to a daughter. Eltuya rides a black stallion and holds a golden Mongolian battle ax in her hands. Take a look at Furst Ogudei, the Khan’s son. He is a great dancer and moves like a dervish on stage. Aigai is another son of the khan. He is a handsome Mongolian dandy and looks more like a pop star than a warrior. The Khan likes Princess Okhla the most; she is constantly carried in a palanquin next to the stage. Here is Yassa, the chaotic gladiator. Not a single head has yet been safe from his mad sword. His battle friend Cash is a dangerous dark warrior who was captured along with Genghis Khan. Another standout character is the adroit swordswoman Yesugan. She was kidnapped from her home when she was still a small child, and now this girl is fighting on the side of Genghis Khan. A rare expert in saber dancing.

And finally, Dschinghis Khan's new album is eager to be completed with new songs. The concept remains the same, but the sound from Alfons Weindorf is unlike anything else. Let us not forget about the famous lyricist, Bernd Meininger, who again invites us into the world of myths and history of the Mongolian nation. A new chapter in the history of the group will undoubtedly confirm its “cult” status, earned over the 28 years of its existence. Hot dancing with captivating music in a show on a giant stage - “This is Dschinghis Khan 2007”. An extraordinary show with horses, camels and a huge volley of fireworks will make spectators jump out of their seats. 28 years after the group's founding, Dschinghis Khan have lost none of their charm. The world has been waiting for their return for a long time, but stop waiting already.

Excerpt characterizing Dschinghis Khan

“I got up at eight o’clock, read the Holy Scriptures, then went to office (Pierre, on the advice of a benefactor, entered the service of one of the committees), returned to dinner, dined alone (the Countess has many guests, unpleasant to me), ate and drank in moderation and After lunch I copied plays for my brothers. In the evening I went to the countess and told a funny story about B., and only then did I remember that I shouldn’t have done this when everyone was already laughing loudly.
“I go to bed with a happy and calm spirit. Great Lord, help me to walk in Your paths, 1) to overcome some of the anger - with quietness, slowness, 2) lust - with abstinence and aversion, 3) to move away from vanity, but not to separate myself from a) public affairs, b) from family concerns , c) from friendly relations and d) economic pursuits.”
“November 27th.
“I got up late and woke up and lay on my bed for a long time, indulging in laziness. My God! help me and strengthen me, that I may walk in Your ways. I read Holy Scripture, but without the proper feeling. Brother Urusov came and talked about the vanities of the world. He talked about the new plans of the sovereign. I began to condemn, but I remembered my rules and the words of our benefactor that a true Freemason must be a diligent worker in the state when his participation is required, and a calm contemplator of what he is not called to. My tongue is my enemy. Brothers G.V. and O. visited me, there was a preparatory conversation for the acceptance of a new brother. They entrust me with the duty of a rhetorician. I feel weak and unworthy. Then they started talking about explaining the seven pillars and steps of the temple. 7 sciences, 7 virtues, 7 vices, 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit. Brother O. was very eloquent. In the evening the acceptance took place. The new arrangement of the premises contributed greatly to the splendor of the spectacle. Boris Drubetskoy was accepted. I proposed it, I was the rhetorician. A strange feeling worried me throughout my stay with him in the dark temple. I found in myself a feeling of hatred towards him, which I strive in vain to overcome. And therefore, I would truly like to save him from evil and lead him onto the path of truth, but bad thoughts about him did not leave me. I thought that his purpose in joining the brotherhood was only the desire to get closer to people, to be in favor with those in our lodge. Apart from the grounds that he asked several times whether N. and S. were in our box (to which I could not answer him), except that, according to my observations, he is incapable of feeling respect for our holy Order and is too busy and satisfied with the outer man, so as to desire spiritual improvement, I had no reason to doubt him; but he seemed insincere to me, and all the time when I stood with him eye to eye in the dark temple, it seemed to me that he was smiling contemptuously at my words, and I really wanted to prick his naked chest with the sword that I was holding, pointed at it. . I could not be eloquent and could not sincerely communicate my doubts to the brothers and the great master. Great Architect of nature, help me find the true paths that lead out of the labyrinth of lies.”
After this, three pages were missing from the diary, and then the following was written:
“I had an instructive and long conversation alone with brother V., who advised me to stick to brother A. Much, although unworthy, was revealed to me. Adonai is the name of the Creator of the world. Elohim is the name of the ruler of all. The third name, the spoken name, has the meaning of the Whole. Conversations with Brother V. strengthen, refresh and confirm me on the path of virtue. With him there is no room for doubt. The difference between the poor teaching of the social sciences and our holy, all-embracing teaching is clear to me. Human sciences subdivide everything - in order to understand, kill everything - in order to examine it. In the holy science of the Order, everything is one, everything is known in its totality and life. Trinity - the three principles of things - sulfur, mercury and salt. Sulfur of unctuous and fiery properties; in combination with salt, its fiery arouses hunger in it, through which it attracts mercury, seizes it, holds it and collectively produces separate bodies. Mercury is a liquid and volatile spiritual essence - Christ, the Holy Spirit, He."
“December 3rd.
“I woke up late, read the Holy Scripture, but was insensitive. Then he went out and walked around the hall. I wanted to think, but instead my imagination imagined an incident that happened four years ago. Mister Dolokhov, after my duel, meeting me in Moscow, told me that he hopes that I now enjoy complete peace of mind, despite the absence of my wife. I didn’t answer anything then. Now I remembered all the details of this meeting and in my soul I spoke to him the most vicious words and caustic answers. I came to my senses and gave up this thought only when I saw myself in the heat of anger; but he didn’t repent enough of it. Then Boris Drubetskoy came and began to tell various adventures; From the very moment he arrived, I became dissatisfied with his visit and told him something disgusting. He objected. I flared up and told him a lot of unpleasant and even rude things. He fell silent and I only realized it when it was already too late. My God, I don’t know how to deal with him at all. The reason for this is my pride. I put myself above him and therefore become much worse than him, for he is condescending to my rudeness, and on the contrary, I have contempt for him. My God, grant me in his presence to see more of my abomination and act in such a way that it would be useful to him too. After lunch I fell asleep and while falling asleep, I clearly heard a voice saying in my left ear: “Your day.”

"Genghis Khan" - a group from West Germany
The group from Germany "Dschinghis Khan" ("Genghis Khan") began its stellar activity in 1978. It was created by producer Ralph Siegel. At that time, he was the director of the recording studio "Jupiter Records", which was founded by Ralph himself in 1974. Musicians such as Dee Dee Jackson and "Silver Convention".

The group consisted of only six members: vocalists from Hungary Edina Pop (born 1941) and Leslie Mandoki (born 1953), Germans Henriette Heichel (born 1953) and Wolfgang Heichel (born 1950), and British vocalist Steve Bender (born 1942). born) and South African dancer Lewis Hendrik Podgeiter (born 1951). By the way, Edina Pop received a prize as the best Hungarian vocalist in 1969.

At that time, the Eurovision Award was considered very prestigious and Ralph decided to win it at all costs. It was decided to record a super dance hit in the form of a parody of an already well-known composition, dress the performers in bright, memorable costumes and fly to Israel for Eurovision 1979 with this number. As a basis for the parody, the group took the famous composition "Rasputin" ("Rasputin", 1978) from Boney M, making an arrangement and writing the original text about the Mongolian ruler Genghis Khan, the new group puts it on the Eurovision qualifying round from Germany, in which with a deafening they win with success. With this number they fly to Jerusalem, but at the competition they only win fourth place, but they forever win the hearts of the audience, which is undoubtedly much more valuable. The composition was on the first line of the charts in Germany, second in Sweden, third in Norway and Switzerland. And we still remember these lines: “Chin-chin-Genghis Khan, ah-ha-ha-ha.”

With “Eurovision 1979” the finest hour of the supergroup “of all times and peoples” began. In just one year, the group releases a whole series of real dance superhits. Among which we can note "Hadji Halef Omar", "Kazachok", "Samurai", "Moscau". These famous compositions were included in the group’s first album, which is called “Dschinghis Khan” (“Genghis Khan”).

The group's already established fans were eagerly awaiting the second album. The album was released in 1980. Two rather long compositions deserve attention - “Machu Picchu” (“Machu Picchu”) and “Rom” (“Rum”).

Soon, feeling that the peak of the group's success was behind him, Steve Bender left the group, starting a solo career. The group's last attempt to stay at the peak of fame was the musical "Corrida" ("Corrida", 1983), which was released in Latin style. However, it went quite unnoticed.

Edina Pop, Leslie Mandoki and Wolfgang Heichel have pursued solo projects with varying degrees of success. In 1988, Leslie performed the song "Korea" in a duet with Cepreji Eva at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Seoul.

The history of this mega-popular team is no secret. Just like their songs. If you wish, you can always search the Internet and read, rummage through music sites and listen. I would like to present a somewhat unexpected view of the work of “Genghis Khans”, which largely coincides with my feelings of those years. So...

"Dschinghis Khan" was born in 1979 - and immediately broke all popularity records. The entire USSR sang an aggressively disc-like version of “Chin-Chin-Genghis Khan, soar like a falcon...” (I don’t remember the rest) and a masterpiece simply: “Moskau, Moskau, let’s throw bombs, you’ll have the Olympics, oh -ho-ho-ho..."

Let's remember the situation at that time. 1979 Detente has ended in the world. The idea of an impending world war was simply in the air. Relations between the West and the USSR were very cool. Remember how the United States and others like them refused to take part in the progressive Moscow Olympics-80? In general, it smelled like kerosene. And then, in 1979, a German group appeared on the horizon of the world charts, which in its super-hit “Genghis Khan” simply predicted the events of the Afghan war. The allegories and parallels are simple: the Mongols and their Golden Horde are the USSR, and the fear of their invasion of the West simply permeates the entire text of the hit: “...let's drink some more vodka, ha-ha-ha, because we are Mongols, ha-ha- Ha..."

Yes, it’s not in vain, it’s not in vain that “Genghis Khan” was banned for performance in the USSR! “Moskau” was also banned - although the lyrics of this song were quite harmless, and Russia was presented in the best possible way from the point of view of a Westerner (the usual stereotypes: caviar, vodka, Natasha, comrade...)

In general, the group’s ascent began with its performance at the Eurovision Song Contest in ’79. Then “Chinggis Khans” never received first place (only 4th), but nevertheless, there was a certain promotion. The producer of the group, Ralph Siegel, decided to exploit the historical theme, which the guys from Boney M had already “fucked” with their “Rasputin” before him. For this purpose, Siegel wrote the first composition “Dschinghis Khan”, recruiting young performers specially “for Eurovision”.

The song became the musical emblem of the group, and on the wave of success, in the same 1979, the group recorded its first and most successful album, “Dschinghis Khan,” where themes that were not entirely usual for popular music of that time were raised. After all, what did the then disco idols of the late 70s sing about? About love, about sex, or just nothing. On the contrary, in “Genghis Khan” each composition was a whole small historical study: “Moskau” - a story about Moscow; "Samurai" - a journey to medieval Japan; “Hadschi Halef Omar” - a breakthrough to the Arab East; "Sahara" - Africa; "China Boy" - China...

What especially impressed the listeners of that time with “Genghis Khans” was its unusual form of performance. Colorful historical costumes, all sorts of special effects, in addition, each performer had his own stage image. Although, of course, the group did not become the pioneer of such “visualization”. But it is not important. The group became super-popular in Europe, and in the USSR the level of fame of “Genghis Khan” simply went off scale. Despite the strict ban on the part of the party and the government from listening to this fascist-Nazi, anti-Soviet group and “exposing” articles regularly appearing in the press about the low moral character of the team and the ideological degradation of their listeners...

"Dschinghis Khan" disappeared into oblivion as suddenly as they rose to the pedestal of fame. Their subsequent albums did not achieve the same success as their 1979 release. Although the group still existed until 1983, releasing an album a year. What is the reason for the failure? Probably, historical topics simply dried up, and it was no longer possible to sing on other topics as successfully and brightly. The group's successful hits after 1979 are simply overwhelming: "Pistolero", made in the Latin American style; "Rom" and "Machu Picchu" - two grandiose historical "operatic" productions, made in the style of Nazi aesthetics of the 30s, and "Wir sitzen alle im selben Boot", which became the last successful hit of the group.

In 1999, "Dschinghis Khan" experienced a rebirth associated with the release of an album of remixes of the best compositions "The History Of Dschinghis Khan" and, in the wake of renewed interest, released several new albums. Does the story continue?

And now I suggest everyone read the translations of the group’s two most “odious” songs. What is anti-Soviet and ideologically incorrect is up to you to decide, citizens!)) Personally, it reminded me of Alexander Filippenko’s famous monologue about a jazz song, the translation of which turned out to be as simple as 3 rubles: “This train is going to Chattanooga”...

Red as blood
Moscow - who will look into your soul
He will see that love is burning there
Like hot coals
Cossacks - hehehehe - raise your glasses
Natasha - ha ha ha - you are beautiful
To your health, girls

Moscow, Moscow
Hit glasses against the wall
Russia is a wonderful country
Moscow, Moscow
Your wide soul
Walks at night without restraint
Moscow
Moscow, Moscow
Moscow! Moscow!
Moscow, Moscow

Drink vodka cold without diluting
Then you will live to be a hundred years old
Moscow, Moscow
Dad, your glass is empty
But we have more in the cellar

Moscow, Moscow
Cossacks - hehehehe - raise your glasses
Natasha - ha ha ha - you are beautiful
Comrade - hehehehe - for love
To your health, brothers!

Chorus

Dschinghis Khan

Dschinghis Khan

- Immer wieder!
Lasst noch Vodka holen
Denn wir sind Mongolen
Und der Teufel kriegt uns fr
u h genug!

Dsching, Dsching, Dschingis Khan
He Reiter - Ho Reiter - He Reiter - Immer weiter!
Dsching, Dsching, Dschingis Khan
He M a nner - Ho M a nner - Tanzt M a nner - So wie immer!
Und man h
u rt ihn lachen
Immer lauter lachen

Denn seiner Kraft kont keiner widerstehen

Genghis Khan

Henkerin (unknown internet character)

They galloped in a race with the wind, a thousand (thousand) people
Everyone blindly followed the guy in front - it was Genghis Khan
The hooves of their horses beat on the sand,
They brought fear and horror to all countries,
And neither thunder nor lightning could stop them.

Chin, Chin, Genghis Khan

Chin, Chin, Genghis Khan,
On your horses, brothers! Drink, brothers! Fight, brothers, again and again!
Let them bring more vodka,
Because we are Mongols
And the devil himself won’t outdrink us.

Chin, Chin, Genghis Khan
Hey, riders, Ho, riders, Hey, riders, on, on!
Chin, Chin, Genghis Khan,
Hey guys! Ho, guys! Dance, guys! Just like always!
And they will hear his laughter,
Louder and louder!
He drains the jug in one sitting.

And he took every woman he liked to his tent.
After all, there was no woman in the world who did not love him.
He made 7 babies in 1 night.
And he only laughed at his enemies,
After all, no one could resist his strength.

Chorus
