Speaking of Ellipsis, the word that best suits the entire history of the group and its leader Rustaveli is “in spite of”. Without doing anything according to the laws of the music market, Eldotoche received all-Russian honest love from listeners. Understanding very well which songs are especially dear to fans, Rustaveli temporarily removed them from concert program- simply believing that they are misunderstood. And after almost twenty years of creative activity, he stubbornly forges his own path, not even paying attention to the fleeting change of trends. Stupid, you say? It commands respect, we answer.

Ellipsis originated in the mid-nineties in one of the not most pleasant areas of Moscow - Kuzminki. It is characteristic that ten years later this region was also praised by Krovostok. "I grew up, as they say, in a dysfunctional family. My character was formed on the street: Kuzminki and all that. Ultimately, all this was reflected in our songs. My principle is to write and read only about what I myself have experienced or seen , the only way".

Back then, hip-hop was listened to either by the most advanced schoolchildren or by the most out-of-touch. Rustaveli, Kuzmitch, King Kong, Gena Grom and their friends belonged to the latter. To those who valued the same things in rap as in a criminal song, the same things as in rock: sincerity, irreconcilability with the existing state of affairs, challenge. And, importantly, melody - it is to this that the group owes its success to a large extent. The songs “It Happens Like This in Life” and the later “The Longing Aches in the Soul” attracted not the most sophisticated, but very numerous listeners to them.

This is not to say that Ellipsis avoided the hip-hop crowd, at least at first. They won at one notable festival of those times, Micro, and took part in the cult Rap Music, perhaps the strongest in its history. But they had little in common: you won’t find a single song between Ellipsis and others. famous rappers. And they didn’t look at all in the spirit of the genre: shaved heads, trousers, shoes, leather jackets, coats. This could be taken as a pose, but no: “We still live in Russia,” said Rustaveli. The group did not film videos on principle and avoided photo sessions: the first was prohibitively expensive at that time and had no prospects on TV, the second, rather, out of a reluctance to attract attention to themselves. On rare photos of those times, not very attractive young men in black are looking at the camera. There were quite a few of these in Kuzminki back then.

At first the group was unable to take advantage of its enormous popularity - their first album was given to the cunning impresario of those years, Vladimir Ferapontov, for six years. “Imagine, we really sounded like “from every iron” back then, but in life we ​​were unemployed vagabonds, without any money or clear prospects,” Rustaveli later said.

Their second release, “Atoms of Consciousness,” brought both money (including thanks to the then booming ringtone market) and constant tours (being quite unpretentious guys, the band members demanded a bottle of vodka and tomato juice). According to the original logic of the albums, there should have been three in total, like dots in an ellipsis, but the third had to wait. The "Unnumbered" album was released, the group began to acquire side projects, like-minded people, its own label with releases, and a line of collections. And then its participants began to leave Ellipsis: Kuzmitch stopped feeling in his place, Gena Grom went to work, King Kong died. In 2007, Rustaveli closed the history of the group with the third album “For the Infinity of Time,” essentially a solo one, and began a new one - the Dotsfam project.

Another decade has passed since then, which included many releases under different banners, but united by the DFR label and the personality of Rustaveli. A book of his poems was published, the first videos were released, which seemed to be unnecessary, and a numerous “live” project Dotsband appeared. The desire to do everything only in one’s own way, as the heart orders, and the sharp social message of the songs remained in place.

A strictly defended independent opinion, ideas and principles in creativity, on the one hand, and an absolute reluctance to “unwind” and become part of the “show business” system, on the other, should have created the preconditions for a collapse in the development of the team. However, oddly enough, Eldotoche became one of the few who managed to acquire the status of “cult” underground performers and at the same time so widely disseminate the results of their creativity in Russia and the CIS that this very status began to be questioned by some people.

Well, really: how can an underground band that deliberately rejects all moves for its own promotion, including taking photos and videos (even at concerts), and firmly defends its views in creativity, achieve such success when their records are distributed through a distribution network with instant speed? almost unlimited circulation (which not only rappers, but also some representatives of pop music would envy), when the very name of the group becomes a successful “brand”, ensuring almost one hundred percent sales?

As it turns out, it can. And the main factor in such nonsense is “people's love.” Yep, that one!

What happened: without any charts, flickering on the “box,” award presentations, and so on, in 2006 alone, the group Eldotoche gave about 20-plus outdoor concerts. And this is with one of the toughest riders among all rap groups in Russia and with one of the highest fees for performances along with Bad Balance and Casta.

The most interesting thing is that the concerts took place mostly not in major cities, and in the deep provinces: from Surgut, Ivanovo and Beloretsk to Almetyevsk, Cherepovets and Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. This is one of the factors " people's love"and recognition when the group is invited to perform thousands of kilometers from home.

This is all the more surprising if you know about the general “deplorable” state of Russian rap, and not only its “concert” sphere. In order to better understand how this could happen, we must go back to the historical beginning.

The date of formation of the team should be considered November 15, 1998. Since then, the composition of the team has changed several times, but at the core were Rustaveli, King Kong, Kuzmitch, Tyukha, MC L.E. and dj Hassan. Over time, the group also “recorded” L. BeeeATCH, the Thunder Gena a.k.a. Bolshoi and Dimona. It is difficult to find out the real names of all the characters, because they try to carefully hide them.

It was then that the Ellipsis participants built their own policy of behavior and the development of team creativity, and at the very beginning they were one of the “of”. That is, one of thousands of other rap groups and performers who tried to make themselves known.

One of these applications for victory was an invitation to participate in the program of the “Rap-Music 99” festival. Again, it was later that they entered into a confrontation with Bad B. Alliance and their representatives, and then they were in their 20s small years old, and some were not yet 20, and the situation itself was not yet ripe for such a development of relations, so the group accepted this invitation.

They performed in competitive program at number 9 (that is, the penultimate, before the Blanzh group) three: Rustaveli, Kuzmitch and King Kong. They began their performance with a rather provocative track “Boshki”, in which even then they slightly “pricked” Legalize and Sheff "a. In general, they were the only ones among all the teams who decided to do such an act; even then they awakened their own views on many things , and he did not always coincide with the opinion of the majority.

Despite the fact that their repertoire already included the future hit “It Happens in Life,” they “flew by.” No, they performed well, it’s just that Blange performed after them and eliminated everyone. And since three teams from Moscow were represented at the festival (there was also a group called Ekipazh), it was Blanzh and Casta who fought in the super-final battle.

But already in the next 2000, at the Micro 2000 festival, an alternative to Rap Music, the group Eldotoche took the Grand Prix. For comparison: at the last festival the same prize was won by the group Yu.G.

In the same 2000, one of the first singles of the group “In Life It Happens” was released on the collection “Voice of the Streets 2” (publishers: “Hip-Hop Info” and studio “Monolith”). And in the same year, the team’s work intensified to record material for debut album. The disc itself was released in 2001 and was called “Life and Freedom.”

With the release of their debut album, Eldotoche truly emerged as a collective with an established personality and a special view of creativity. This feature was manifested in the fact that the group members seemed to be “breathing poison” in response to all the negativity that surrounded them: this society, corrupted by the virus of consumption, these governments and authorities engaged in substituting concepts and “duping” the people, these corrupt media , ready to depict and ruin anything for a coin, these laws, frameworks and processes that allow all this to exist.

The texts were constructed and woven from such dictionary forms and phrases that most fully and clearly emphasized the clear position of the authors on pressing issues. At the same time, they were not devoid of poetic imagery and beauty of style, but most importantly: they had a certain zest that firmly entered the consciousness of most teenagers, like a knife through butter, subduing them and attuning them to the ideas of the group. As it turned out later, these ideas were not alien to older and mature people.

Along with “social” themes, the album also contained lyrical notes, which was only beneficial, because you won’t be satisfied with “chernukha” alone for a long time. The musical part of the album “Life and Freedom” matched each theme and, in principle, was in sufficient harmony with the text part. But again, such “strings” were touched upon that allowed some tracks to become almost hits, such as, for example, “It Happens in Life.”

In 2002, Ellipsis released his second album, “Atoms of Consciousness.” In it they consolidate their signature style, when the album contains the main track, and then the so-called “inter-theme” - and so on throughout the entire disc.

The album itself turned out to be simply a masterpiece. The fans' responses were in the most admiring tones. The musical component became better in sound, the album turned out to be more diverse, and guitars appeared. The lyrics in some tracks have become even tougher and more insightful than in the first album.

“Tosca Aches in the Soul” instantly becomes a hit. And the song “Distance” simply amazes with its unusualness and deep penetration into consciousness. I would also like to highlight the track “The Last Meeting”.

In 2003, Eldotoche released his third team album, “Non-Numbered,” demonstrating an enviable consistency in creativity and work, unlike most domestic rap artists.

Despite the fact that this disc contained songs that had already been heard on the second album, almost every track had its own unique personality and coloring. The song “With the Winds” gave a slight touch of romanticism to the entire album. Along with the traditional social tracks, there was also the composition “YOP-T”, which stood out from the rest in that the vast majority of groups and performers gathered around the Eldotoche group took part in it.

The entire album turned out to be so diverse in terms of ideas, lyrics, music, performance, implementation, as well as integral and competent.

It should be noted that starting from the second album, the group released its releases at the Monolit studio and the total amount of sales broke all Russian rap records, which gave the team a “credit of trust” from the studio management.

Partly due to this circumstance, as well as the fact that the group members thought not only about themselves, but also had a desire to help promising groups and performers close to them, they decided to create the Dots Family Records label with subsequent promotional activities.

The result of such activities was that in 2003, even before the release of “Unnumbered” D.F.R. released 4 collections “Hip-Hop Quarter” (each issue included a kind of “report” for three months of the year). The collections included both groups and performers close to Eldotoche, as well as young, unknown and promising teams who sent their demo recordings by mail or gave them away during concerts.

In addition to these collections, Dots Family Records in 2003 released: “A Piece of Life for Five Years Equal” from the formation of groups under the brand name Eldotochiya - Third Way (it also included White Hot Ice, M. Squad and Les Misérables), albums of the group “Game-Bullshit” M. Squad and “13 Warriors” by the group Les Misérables. This together with his solo album in just one year. Not bad, right?

Later on D.F.R. The collections “Hip-Hop Quarter”, “Dots Family Fuckt”, “Rap Experiences”, as well as the “Third Way” project continued to be published. In addition, albums were released the following groups and performers: Ezekiel 25:17, Jeep, Windows, Negative Influence, Change of Opinion, Mahogany, MC L. E. All this along with active concert activity and assistance in posting material from little-known rappers.

It should also be noted such a fact as the relationship between the family of the Eldotoche group and the rest of the domestic rap community, including artists. To put it mildly, the attitude was antagonistic. We will still look at the reasons for this attitude of the Ellipsis group, but now we will try to understand why they were treated this way.

One of the main problems in domestic rap is belonging to one or another party. This is when performers unite into a conglomerate under a common idea or according to creative principles. IN Lately It was on this principle that our rap labels were formed. As a result, around such creative associations loyal fans also gather and wage an irreconcilable “war” against other similar associations, mainly on specialized Internet forums.

This is actually nonsense when representatives and bearers of the same culture “drive” each other instead of uniting and “moving” the culture together. And it just so happened that the formation around the group Eldotoche, due to their conceptual position both in life and in creativity, came under attack from almost all supporters of other rap parties and conglomerates.

Whether it was ordinary envy, or other factors, the main reasons and motives for such dislike for the group and their work were accusations of allegedly “pop” sound, “primitiveness” of performance, “tongue-tiedness” in the lyrics, “substitution of concepts” of the underground idea when everyone should be “down” and not stick out.

The same accusations were poured out (and, by the way, continue to be poured in) from “smart people, experts and connoisseurs of real rap” against fans of the group’s work. As soon as someone announced that he was listening to Ellipsis, they immediately began to “press” the unfortunate person from all sides, accusing him of “rogue” taste and the fact that he does not “fumble around.” And in general: “Ellipses suck for youngsters!”

To understand all this, you need to carefully study the conceptual component of the ideas and creativity of the Ellipsis group. Based on the few interviews and the minimum information that can be found about them (read below about the reasons for the lack of extensive information and such “asceticism” and “reclusion” in general), it is possible to summarize the information and draw the following conclusions.

The very name of the group, Ellipsis, means controlling the power of thought. Designation of a certain understatement and significance, which leads to the search for answers to questions by the listener himself. The second meaning is the search for an answer to what remains after death, what is hidden behind the depths of consciousness, behind the weight of understanding, behind the lies and system of the world in which we live... Already in the very name of the group, well-thought-out fundamental principles and foundations for future creativity were laid down. But any creativity is impossible without ideas and the people who form and implement these ideas.

If we consider the ideological position of Rustaveli, the informal leader of the Eldotochenie association, we get the following picture. Rustavelli himself and the rest of the group have higher education. The community of views and ideas was formed from the work of Jim Morrison and the Doors group, Pyotr Mamonov, Vladimir Vysotsky, the Kino group, the King and the Clown group, Anatoly Krupnov, etc. In addition, the works of the following writers had a significant influence: John Coleman, Ken Kesey, Anthony Burgess, the Strugatsky brothers, Sergei Dovlatov, as well as Klimov and Pelevin. I don’t know about you, but I think this “set” is quite solid for the formation of a holistic personality.

How could such a person (Rustavelli) be under the influence of hard drugs? The answer to this question is unknown. But there is an answer to another question: how did you overcome this terrible addiction? And it was possible precisely because the personality was spiritually reborn, went through the “hell” of consciousness filtering and, as a result, gained willpower and spiritual independence.

In his last interview Rustavelli acknowledges the fact that former drug addicts does not happen, and offers his own way to escape from life and moral problems through sports. It is the absence of propaganda healthy image life, he calls it a strategic omission of the state and society and warns the younger generation against making mistakes in by example: It’s better to never start!

This position deserves deep respect. Not everyone is ready to admit their own mistakes, begin to improve, achieve results and campaign for it.

Returning to the analysis of the conceptual component of the work of the group Eldotoche, I would like to cite an excerpt from an interview that appeared shortly after the release of the album “Atoms of Consciousness”. The question concerned the creativity of the group.

“We write our songs first of all for ourselves... Well, and for people close to us. This is self-expression and subsequently self-knowledge... We concentrate our thoughts about the world around us, give it all verbal form, we write music to the words with the appropriate mood and depend on the moment of creation that is happening... We believe that real poetry of the 21st century should be tough (according to the time) and as truthful as possible... Everyone who has heard us finds something of their own in our themes , and we are quite happy with it!”

Now it becomes clear why in the process creative development The group members determined precisely this direction of their efforts. Creativity as a form of protest against established norms and morals of society finds a deep response in the hearts of fans of the group’s talent.

One of the fundamental factors in the negative attitude of some rap artists towards the Ellipsis group was statements that the group did not at all strive to conquer show business. The group members deliberately ignored all PR campaigns. There was absolutely no promotional work carried out: photo shoots, video shooting and their further placement. In general, Ellipsis fundamentally did not recognize any other ways of popularizing the team, except through creativity, which was created primarily for self-expression.

Obviously, such a principled position was most likely caused by the fact that the team members clearly decided both in creativity and in the method of its implementation to adhere to the strict rules of the chosen line of behavior.

They also denied any attempts to “make money from the left” on the name of the collective.

The team's rider included a non-negotiable clause in which the organizers of the group's performance pledged to prevent unauthorized photo and video filming. IN otherwise the concert was stopped, and the blame for the disruption fell on the tour organizers. How this point was managed to be met when every second phone viewers have a built-in video camera remains a mystery.

In general, many were annoyed by such integrity of the team members. Well, of course: “We’re tearing our own ass here, sparing no effort, but they don’t do a damn thing and sell more albums than anyone else, they tour a lot, and people know and love them!”

As a result of this principled position, the group Mnotochetie did not have extensive and close contacts with representatives of other rap labels in Russia, and they themselves did not strive for this - there was enough other work. Who they creatively overlapped with was White Hot Ice (their longtime idol) and D.O.B. represented by Sir J and Jeep.

It was in this situation that the group Eldotoche and their label Dots Family Records existed fruitfully almost until 2007. If we track the dynamics of the team's work based on their releases, we will see that starting from 2005, at first imperceptibly, and by 2006, the team began to slow down more and more noticeably. Fewer collections are being released, fewer full-fledged albums are appearing from satellite teams working under the wing of Eldotoche. Perhaps this was partly due to the band’s active touring activities...

Be that as it may, in mid-December 2006, information spread that Ellipsis as a collective was ceasing to exist. Soon, an extensive interview with Rustavelli appeared on the official website of Dots Family Records, confirming the collapse of the group.

No detailed answers were received about the reasons that led to the breakup. It was only stated at length that Kuzmitch was tired of being Kuzmitch (what exactly this means is unknown), and Gena Grom decided to go into jurisprudence and stop creative activity. MC L.E., due to recent changes in relations between Russia and Georgia, was forced to leave Moscow and return to his homeland, becoming a hostage to the next political situation. L. BeeeATCH has not been in touch at all for two years now and does not participate in the affairs of the team...

In addition, in 2006, Rustavelli’s closest friend and ally, who was at the origins of the creation of the team, King Kong, passed away. Naturally, this also affected the decision to close the Ellipsis group.

At the same time, Rustavelli announced that at the end of February 2007 the last fourth album (which does not yet have a name) should be released, which, in fact, is more of Rustavelli’s solo work than a team one. The ellipsis as a group will complete its creative journey with the release of this album.

Dots Family Records is transforming into an independent label operating only for internal projects. Most likely, this means curtailing a wide range of work.

In general, from Rustavel’s interview it is clear that the man is mentally tired and last year was stressful and difficult for him. He does not exclude the possibility of creative self-realization in the future, but there are no clear answers, and it is unknown when they will be.

I would like to hope that this waiting period will not drag on. In any case, numerous fans of Ellipsis were suddenly “orphaned,” and this was a big blow for them. Of course, the fourth album, with its “swan song,” will to some extent appease their “appetites,” but what next?

Yes, there are still groups and performers who were part of the Eldotocheta family, such as MC L.E., Red Derevo, Fat Complex, Okna, Pili Grima. But will they be able to “pick up the banner”? Who will replace the Ellipsis and will it come at all? This is where you need to put an ellipsis, forgive the pun, but somehow I don’t want to.

In conclusion, I can say that the Ellipsis group, even at the end of its creative path in spite of all the slanderers (pun again!) she remained true to her principles and traditions. Others could use a suitable opportunity: to make more money from a well-promoted brand. Stamp out heaps of “latest” albums and obscure collections, or don’t kill the goose that lays the golden eggs at all and push the name as hard as possible.

But the guys actually confirmed their life principles and foundations. For which special respect goes to them! They wouldn't have been able to do it any other way. Yes, in a different way, “It would be stupid”!

As if preparing and anticipating their speedy departure, they managed to prepare and release two MP3 complete editions“All Albums” (and throughout their career they have prepared and released about 30 album releases) - for all connoisseurs, fans and those who will get to know them for the first time.

Already now one can feel a slight sadness and nostalgia for the fact that a whole layer of culture, a whole era is passing away... The participants of Ellipsis were and remain a model of independence from various stereotypes. Moreover, they managed to “infect” many by their own example - and this is worth a lot, it is not forgotten and worthy of respect!

The album itself turned out to be simply a masterpiece. The fans' responses were in the most admiring tones. The musical component became better in sound, the album turned out to be more diverse, and guitars appeared. The lyrics in some tracks have become even tougher and more insightful than in the first album.

“The longing aches in my soul” instantly becomes a hit.

In 2003, "Ellipsis" released its third team album, "Unnumbered", demonstrating an enviable consistency in creativity and work, unlike most domestic rap artists.

Despite the fact that this disc contained songs that had already been heard on the second album, almost every track had its own unique personality and coloring. The song “With the Winds” gave a slight touch of romanticism to the entire album. Along with traditional social tracks, there was also the composition “YOP-T”, which stood out from the rest in that the vast majority of groups and performers gathered around the group “Mnogotoche” took part in it.

The entire album turned out to be so diverse in terms of ideas, lyrics, music, performance, implementation, as well as integral and competent.

It should be noted that starting from the second album, the group released its releases at the Monolit studio and the total amount of sales broke all Russian rap records, which gave the team a “credit of trust” from the studio management.

Partly due to this circumstance, as well as the fact that the group members thought not only about themselves, but also had a desire to help promising groups and performers close to them, they decided to create the Dots Family Records label with subsequent promotional activities.

The result of such activities was that in 2003, even before the release of “Unnumbered” D.F.R. released 4 collections “Hip-Hop Quarter” (each issue included a kind of “report” for three months of the year). The collections included both groups and performers close to "Ellipsis", as well as young, unknown and promising teams who sent their demo recordings by mail or gave them away during concerts.

In addition to these collections, Dots Family Records in 2003 released: “A piece of life is equal to five years” from the formation of groups under the brand name “Ellipses” - “The Third Way” (which also included White Hot Ice, M. Squad and “Les Miserables”), albums “Game-Bullshit” by the group M. Squad and “13 Warriors” by the group “Les Miserables”. This together with his solo album in just one year.

Later on D.F.R. The collections “Hip-Hop Quarter”, “Dots Family Fuckt”, “Rap Experiences”, as well as the “Third Way” project continued to be published. In addition, albums by the following groups and artists were released: “Ezekiel 25:17”, “Jeep”, “Windows”, “Negative Influence”, “Change of Opinions”, “Mahogany”, MC L.E. All this together with active concert activity and assistance in posting material from little-known rappers.

It should also be noted such a fact as the relationship between the family of the "Ellipsis" group and the rest of the domestic rap community, including artists. To put it mildly, the attitude was antagonistic.

One of the main problems in domestic rap is belonging to one or another party. This is when performers unite into a conglomerate under a common idea or according to creative principles. Recently, our rap labels have been formed on this principle. As a result, loyal fans gather around such creative associations and wage an irreconcilable “war” against other similar associations, mainly on specialized Internet forums.

This is actually nonsense when representatives and bearers of the same culture “drive” each other instead of uniting and “moving” the culture together. And it just so happened that the formation around the group “Ellipsis”, due to their conceptual position both in life and in creativity, came under attack from almost all supporters of other rap parties and conglomerates.

Whether it was ordinary envy, or other factors, the main reasons and motives for such dislike for the group and their work were accusations of allegedly “pop” sound, “primitiveness” of performance, “tongue-tiedness” in the lyrics, “substitution of concepts” of the underground idea when everyone should be “down” and not stick out.

The same accusations were poured out (and, by the way, continue to be poured in) from “smart people, experts and connoisseurs of real rap” against fans of the group’s work. As soon as someone announced that he was listening to Ellipsis, they immediately began to “press” the unfortunate person from all sides, accusing him of “rogue” taste and the fact that he does not “fumble around.” And in general: “Ellipses suck for youngsters!”

To understand all this, you need to carefully study the conceptual component of the ideas and creativity of the Ellipsis group. Based on the few interviews and the minimum information that can be found about them (read below about the reasons for the lack of extensive information and such “asceticism” and “reclusion” in general), it is possible to summarize the information and draw the following conclusions.

The very name of the group “Ellipsis” means control by the power of thought. Designation of a certain understatement and significance, which leads to the search for answers to questions by the listener himself. The second meaning is the search for an answer to what remains after death, what is hidden behind the depths of consciousness, behind the weight of understanding, behind the lies and system of the world in which we live... Already in the very name of the group, well-thought-out fundamental principles and foundations for future creativity were laid . But any creativity is impossible without ideas and the people who form and implement these ideas.

If we consider the ideological position of Rustaveli, the informal leader of the Dots association, we get the following picture. Rustavelli himself and the rest of the group have higher education. The community of views and ideas was formed from the work of Jim Morrison and the Doors group, Pyotr Mamonov, Vladimir Vysotsky, the Kino group, the King and the Clown group, Anatoly Krupnov, etc. In addition, the works of the following writers had a significant influence: John Coleman, Ken Kesey, Anthony Burgess, the Strugatsky brothers, Sergei Dovlatov, as well as Klimov and Pelevin.

How could such a person (Rustavelli) be under the influence of hard drugs? The answer to this question is unknown. But there is an answer to another question: how did you overcome this terrible addiction? And it was possible precisely because the personality was spiritually reborn, went through the “hell” of consciousness filtering and, as a result, gained willpower and spiritual independence.

In his latest interview, Rustavelli acknowledges the fact that there are no former drug addicts, and offers his own way of escaping life and moral problems through sports. It is the lack of promotion of a healthy lifestyle that he calls a strategic omission of the state and society and warns the younger generation against making mistakes by example: it is better to never start!

This position deserves deep respect. Not everyone is ready to admit their own mistakes, begin to improve, achieve results and campaign for it.

Returning to the analysis of the conceptual component of the work of the group "Ellipsis", below is an excerpt from an interview that appeared shortly after the release of the album "Atoms of Consciousness". The question concerned the creativity of the group.

“We write our songs first of all for ourselves... Well, and for people close to us. This is self-expression and subsequently self-knowledge... We concentrate our thoughts about the world around us, give it all a verbal form, write music to the words with the appropriate mood and depend on the moment of creation... We believe that real poetry of the 21st century should to be tough (according to the time) and as truthful as possible... Everyone who heard us finds something of their own in our topics, and we are quite happy with that!”

Now it becomes clear why, in the process of creative development, the group members determined precisely this direction of their efforts. Creativity as a form of protest against established norms and morals of society finds a deep response in the hearts of fans of the group’s talent.

One of the fundamental factors in the negative attitude of some rap artists towards the group "Ellipsis" were statements that the group did not at all strive to conquer show business. The group members deliberately ignored all PR campaigns. No promotional work was carried out at all: photo shoots, video shooting and their further posting. In general, "Ellipsis" fundamentally did not recognize any other ways of popularizing the group, except through creativity, which was created primarily for self-expression.

Obviously, such a principled position was most likely caused by the fact that the team members clearly decided both in creativity and in the method of its implementation to adhere to the strict rules of the chosen line of behavior.

They also denied any attempts to “make money from the left” on the name of the collective.

The team's rider included a non-negotiable clause in which the organizers of the group's performance pledged to prevent unauthorized photo and video filming. Otherwise, the concert was stopped, and the blame for the disruption fell on the tour organizers. How this point was managed to be met when every second phone viewers have a built-in video camera remains a mystery.

In general, many were annoyed by such integrity of the team members. Well, of course: “We’re tearing our own ass here, sparing no effort, but they don’t do a damn thing and sell more albums than anyone else, they tour a lot, and people know and love them!”

As a result of such a principled position, the group “Ellipsis” did not have extensive and close contacts with representatives of other rap labels in Russia, and they themselves did not strive for this - there was enough other work. Who they creatively overlapped with was White Hot Ice (their longtime idol) and D.O.B. represented by Sir J and Jeep.

It was approximately in this situation that the group "Mnogotoche" and their label Dots Family Records existed fruitfully almost until 2007. If we track the dynamics of the team's work based on their releases, we will see that starting from 2005, at first imperceptibly, and by 2006, the team began to slow down more and more noticeably. Fewer collections are being released, fewer full-fledged albums are appearing from satellite teams working under the wing of "Ellipsis". Perhaps this was partly due to the band’s active touring activities...

Be that as it may, in mid-December 2006, information spread that “Ellipsis” as a collective was ceasing to exist. Soon, an extensive interview with Rustavelli appeared on the official website of Dots Family Records, confirming the collapse of the group.

No detailed answers were received about the reasons that led to the breakup. It was only stated at length that Kuzmitch was tired of being Kuzmitch (what exactly this means is unknown), and Gena Grom decided to go into jurisprudence and stop creative activity. M.C.L.E. due to recent changes in relations between Russia and Georgia, he was forced to leave Moscow and return to his homeland, becoming a hostage to the latest political alignments. L. BeeeATCH has not been in touch at all for two years now and does not participate in the affairs of the team...

In addition, in 2006, Rustavelli’s closest friend and ally, who was at the origins of the creation of the team, King Kong, passed away. Naturally, this also affected the decision to close the Ellipsis group.

At the same time, Rustavelli announced that at the end of February 2007 the last fourth album was to be released, which, in fact, would be more of a solo work by Rustavelli than a team. "Ellipsis" as a group will complete its creative journey with the release of this album. And it came out. Under the title "...For the infinity of time...", with traditional themes for the group, with big amount rappers participating in the recording, with lyrical tracks and a kind of “evil” sound. It can be fully called the work of Ellipsis.

Dots Family Records is transforming into an independent label operating only for internal projects. Most likely, this means curtailing a wide range of work.

In general, from Rustavelli’s interview it is clear that the man is mentally tired and the past year has been stressful and difficult for him. He does not exclude the possibility of creative self-realization in the future, but there are no clear answers, and it is unknown when they will be.

I would like to hope that this waiting period will not drag on. In any case, numerous fans of “Ellipsis” somehow suddenly became “orphaned,” and for them this was a big blow. Of course, the fourth album, with its “swan song,” will to some extent appease their “appetites,” but what next?

Yes, there are still groups and performers who were part of the “Ellipsis” family, such as MC L.E., “Mahogany”, Fat Complex, “Okna”, “Pili Grima”. But will they be able to “pick up the banner”? Who will replace "Ellipsis" and will it come at all?

The group "Ellipsis", even at the end of its creative journey, in spite of all the slanderers (pun again!), remained true to its principles and traditions. Others could use a suitable opportunity: to make more money from a well-promoted brand. Stamp out heaps of “latest” albums and obscure collections, or don’t kill the goose that lays the golden eggs at all and push the name as hard as possible.

But the guys actually confirmed their life principles and foundations. For which special respect goes to them! They wouldn't have been able to do it any other way. Yes, it would be stupid to say otherwise!

P.S. We all still have to understand and understand the legacy they left us. As if preparing and anticipating their imminent departure, they managed to prepare and release two complete editions of “All Albums” in MP3 (and in total during their career they prepared and released about 30 album releases) - for all connoisseurs, fans and those who will become acquainted with them for the first time.

Already now one can feel a slight sadness and nostalgia for the fact that a whole layer of culture, a whole era is passing away... The participants of "Ellipsis" were and remain a model of independence from various stereotypes. Moreover, they managed to “infect” many by their own example - and this is worth a lot, it is not forgotten and worthy of respect!

Ellipsis, a self-sufficient project of the Russian underground hip-hop scene, which in terms of CD sales can easily compete with many media-promoted pop projects. The group's latest album, "For the Infinity of Time..." was no exception. An explosive mixture of hip-hop, yard songs, psychedelia of the 60s and industrial rigidity of the 90s organically turns into a unique product that has no analogues on the domestic scene

Billboard magazine met with the founder of the group Rustaveli and his faithful comrade Tyukha to ask a number of questions.

you stated that the history of the Ellipsis group has been completed, the group no longer exists. This is true? Rustaveli: In 1998, when we created the group Eldotoche, it was decided that only three albums would be released under this name. Three dots - three albums. And we did as we planned. If someone thinks that our third record is “Unnumbered”, and “For the Infinity of Time...” is already the fourth, then they are mistaken. "Unnumbered" is just that, unnumbered, and it cannot be considered a full-fledged album by the group. This is just a collection of mixes, outtakes and joint work. There will be no more albums under the name Ellipsis. However, the Dots Family remains, and we will continue to work with other projects.

Who invented the Ellipsis? Rustaveli: Ya.

Back in 1994, I started writing lyrics without any specific goal. And some time later, a friend introduced me to DJ Hassan. We began to communicate with him, and somehow imperceptibly this communication resulted in writing. And in 1998, other characters began to appear: first Kuzmitch, then other guys. Gena Thunder appeared later, towards the end of recording the second album. By this time, Hassan left us, and we remained with Kuzmitch and Tyukha. Tyukha: I met the guys when I was working at the studio. It was the end of 1998. They came to us to record their first tracks. But my friend worked with them, because of whom there was one unpleasant problem during recording: the guy wrote rock all his life, and it was in his head that no one needed the “minus”, so after mixing he deleted them all with one click of a button . For rappers, the “minus” is often more important than the album itself; it is their concert bread. I restored everything for them in two nights. That's how the press of one button brought us together.

Your works stand apart from the general hip-hop background. They have no analogues in our country, and they are completely different from Western products. Sometimes the question even arises: is this hip-hop? Is that what you originally intended? R: We didn’t come up with anything on purpose. As it turned out, that’s what they did. Even the idea of ​​three albums came about by chance. In our country, many things were born spontaneously, the same “Third Way”, for example. And Russian rap or Western... I divide music differently: there is one that sticks out, there is one that doesn’t stick out. That's all. In 1994 I listened to Oak Gaai and White Hot Ice. I didn’t even know about the existence of Bad Balance at that time, I was more into Cypress Hill, as well as Kino, DDT, Vysotsky... This is what I grew up on and what became the subconscious basis of our music. I've always written for myself. For yourself and for your friends. I didn't think about how it would be received by a large audience.

How did you get on the Monolith label?

R: We had a man who called himself our producer. It was he who gave Eldotochi's first album to the Kvadrodisk label in 2001. As a result of this “successful” operation, we did not receive a penny, although the disc sold well for more than a year. And only in mid-2002, after sitting down at the negotiating table with people from the company and reviewing the agreement, we saw at least some money. True, due to our youth and stupidity, we gave them the rights to distribute the album for six years. What they sold there and how much they received will forever remain a mystery. So, and then we were told that there is a person on the Monolit label, Anton Pronin, who is actively interested in new names. We arrived, met and almost immediately agreed on everything. Our second album was almost ready.

But “Monolith” didn’t immediately buy up the rights to the first album? R: No, it was sold by Kvadrodisk for six years. And only then we gave it to Monolith.

Do you keep track of how many copies your albums sell?

R: If everything that the pirates sold were classified as legal sales, then we would already have two islands in our possession. Now somehow everything is steering in the right direction. Can you imagine, in 2003 we come to Ukraine, and out of 15 discs that are given to us for signature, only two turn out to be licensed. Of course, I'm curious about how and what is being sold, but it doesn't bother me every minute.

Ellipsis's third album is noticeably different from the group's previous works. Was there any temptation to tailor it according to the patterns of the first two albums, which are still selling quite successfully? R: The song “Blue Smoke” was written in 1996, “In my city” - in 1997... These things lay for a long time and waited in the wings. The disc turned out the way I saw the album initially, that is, in 1998. We did it with Tyukha, and I consciously, or maybe subconsciously, returned to my roots. And Tyukha understood me perfectly and supported me. We didn't design anything special. T: We did everything from the heart. We weren't going to cut it for anything...

Tyukha, in your guitar work you can clearly feel the influence of Rage Against The Machine and Nine Inch Nails. Is this not a coincidence? T: Of course not. This is the music that we constantly listened to and listen to, and it is reflected in such forms. Although we didn’t pull anything on purpose. The same “In My City” turned out to be similar to the Kino group - it just happened that way, and we didn’t change anything. R: The principle is simple: like it means you like it.

Rustam, there is every reason to believe that you really love the work of Jim Morrison and The group Doors... R: Yes, without a doubt. I have never hidden this. Morrison - greatest poet modernity. I use his formula: poetry should open doors.

What and who else influences your work? R: All those people who made the brilliant film “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”, as well as Pyotr Mamonov, White Hot Ice, Dolphin.

You're turning out to be some kind of non-hip-hop character... Do you actually listen to rap? R: I'm listening. Now I’m generally into the “white” hip-hop underground. Or I like La Coka Nostra, JediMindTracks, Everlast, Slaine, Immortal Technique.

But what about the obligatory attributes: cars, chicks, diamonds?.. R: This was enough before: they wore wide trousers, and attached all sorts of trinkets to themselves. But understand, then it was a challenge! And now the challenge is to be normal! Now everyone is crazy, but I want to be normal. And it’s not even about clothes, but about an attack on souls. The more soulless you are, the more normal you are. And this is not normal...

When I talked to the YUG group, Meth told me that he periodically “hits his head on some doorframe” in order to truly feel life... R: And my whole life is exactly like this. She constantly hits me on doorposts. In the last two years I have suffered the cruelest blows of fate. I lost friends... But this makes me stronger and better. I'm afraid of callousness.

Aren't you afraid that at some point they will stop listening to you? R: I felt happy when only 15 people listened to me. I won't adjust, I won't lie. I will not read fiction, as long as the listener likes it... I will only read what I feel myself, and I will be glad if someone finds it useful.

Does music feed you?

R: Yes, music feeds me.

Many concerts? R: Not very much now. Recently there was a presentation for which we had been preparing for a long time, and therefore we refused most of the proposals. But before that there was more than enough.

Why did you so stubbornly release compilations from the DFR label, because it was obvious that this was far from a profitable business? R: We thought so important point in the activities of the DFR label. We supported our friends and those we simply liked. Each group received 600 rubles for recording, regardless of their rank in the popularity chart - that was the principle. Although yes, more than one thousand copies of each collection were not sold, there was no benefit.

What other projects of the DFR label, besides Ellipsis, can boast successful sales? R: Mahogany is now actively gaining momentum.

Who do you like among modern Russian rappers? R: Nobody. I listen, of course, a lot, I listen to the end, but I don’t want to press “replay”. Everyone is chasing form, everyone is trying to come up with cool beats, they are fussing with production, but there is no soul. Doesn't stick out.

Tyukha, who is most significant to you in music? T: For me the number one album is “OK Computer” by Radiohead. I listen to it all the time, especially in the summer for some reason. I also like Rage Against The Machine, Massive Attack, Nine Inch Nails. Yes, a lot of things, in fact... I grew up by Led Zeppelin, For example. And it's all inside me. I take advantage of this legacy.

Have you ever had any misunderstandings with Rustaveli? Still, his music is completely different... T: At first it was. I stuck to my line, the guys didn’t understand. But then I got into what they were doing, and everything immediately fell into place. Well, besides, I listened to a lot of trip-hop, so I didn’t have to break myself too much.

There is an established image of the group Eldotoche - these guys from the street who, if anything happens, will smash the fucking... R: Well, if it’s the case, then we’ll smash the fucking without a market. I grew up, as they say, in a dysfunctional family. My character was formed on the street: Kuzminki and all that. Ultimately, all this was reflected in our songs. In general, all my topics are from life. My principle is to write and read only about what I myself have experienced or seen. The only way.

Do you read books? R: Of course, I read. The same Morrison, or “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion” I recently read...

Are you interested in politics? R: Well, what would we do without it? There is me, there are my loved ones, there is my brother, who lives in Georgia, and I cannot meet him... How can I not be interested in politics if me and my friends suffer because of it? More and more often I have a question: why is this so? We must be slaves, we cannot think freely? I'm thinking about it. I'm reading about it.

Do you feel comfortable living in modern world? R: In general, probably yes. It seems to me that a “golden age” will soon come in Russia. And realizing this gives me the strength to live on, I like it. The main thing is that no one interferes. It’s also important not to suddenly be left alone in this world.

The traditional question: what happens next? R: When MC L.E. returns from Georgia, and this will probably happen closer to the fall, we will begin recording the Dots Family album.
