Under the concept of "Danish" throughout the Viking Age and for several centuries after its end, all Scandinavian languages. On the origin of runic writing
Despite the differences in languages, any Scandinavian can still understand most of the words from runic inscriptions on his own, without a dictionary and translator. Initially, this writing arose among the Germanic peoples several centuries after the birth of Christ. It included 24 signs made up of vertical and oblique lines. It was they who were most conveniently carved on a surface made of wood. Since the horizontal lines looked blurry due to the fact that they seemed to be lost in the fibers of the wood, they were not used.
With the beginning of the Viking Age, the number of runes decreased to 16 characters. In parallel, the spelling of some of them has also changed. The runes have been simplified to make them easier to apply to various surfaces. At the same time, reading the signs became more difficult, as many of them acquired additional meanings. In addition, one rune can represent several sounds. So, the rune "k" can be read in four versions: "k", "g", "ng" and "pc". At the same time, many signs were created to separate words and phrases.
The reasons for the appearance of the 16-digit runic alphabet are not known for certain. According to one assumption, these changes did not occur due to natural causes, but because of a "command from above." This version confirms the fact that in those days the central government produced many global change in society.
The new alphabet was called "fupark" - it was these 6 characters that were at its beginning. It existed in 2 forms: Danish and Swedish-Norwegian. The first option included ordinary runes, and the second - "short knots", characterized by a smaller number of branches and their insignificant length. Both types of runes have found their application. So, solemn and commemorative inscriptions were more often cut with the help of ordinary ones, and simpler “short knots” were widely used by merchants and ordinary people.
Runic signs were written not from left to right, but from top to bottom. They were not suitable for writing letters on parchment. For this, the Latin alphabet was used, known at that time mainly to the clergy.
Application of runic inscriptions and artifacts
The majority of representatives of the nobility owned the reading of new signs. After all, runic inscriptions were applied to memorial stones in order to be read. The Scandinavians carved runes on the sides of ships, horse harness, crests, leather and bone products, etc. In some cases it was the name of the owner of the thing, in others it was a wise saying, in others it was magical writing. Removal of runic characters in Latin letters
After the Christianization of Scandinavia, which fell on last century the first millennium, the Latin alphabet began to be introduced on these lands. This is confirmed by inscriptions on coins dating back to the 10th century, as well as by a letter from a high-ranking person, which dates back to the 11th century. But for laconic everyday notes, runes were considered more convenient, and they continued to be used until the late Middle Ages. After all, it is much easier to write a message with a knife and a bone left over from lunch than with an inkwell and parchment, which in those days were not available to everyone.
Scandinavian names
The inscriptions on the runic stones contain a lot of information, including the names common in Scandinavia. Many names were used throughout its territory (for example, Ulf and Thorstein), but there were also those that were found only in specific regions. So, Oddketil and Eyulf belong to the West Scandinavian, and Toke, Manne and Asved are common from the East Scandinavian. Thanks to "regional" names, historians are able to determine the origin of the representatives of a particular colony. For example, by geographical names in Normandy, it can be concluded that the bulk of the Scandinavian settlers were Danes. So, the name of the city of Oqueville comes from Danish name Oge.
The Viking times are notable for the fact that it was during this era that many names appeared, including the name of the pagan deity Thor (Torkil, Thorstein, Toke, etc.). Many of them did not cease to be used after the Christianization of Scandinavia. The Vikings did not forget about the "smaller brothers", giving people names that included the names of animals (Gunulf, Stigbjorn) and even assigning them full names one or another type of living creature (Urm is a snake, Bjorn is a bear).
The tradition of some noble families was to name their offspring only a certain minimum of names. For example, the Norwegian kings most often gave their descendants the names Olav and Harold. Some Scandinavians were assigned additional names. With their help, belonging to a particular genus or region was emphasized. So, a migrant from Denmark who settled in Norway could be called Ulf-Dane. 1. RUNIC ALPHABET
Runic alphabet(futhark) is a set of 24 characters, each of which has a strictly certain meaning, i.e. to a certain extent, each character of this alphabet is a hieroglyph. But unlike the hieroglyph, which reflects the static relationship of symbols, the letters of the runic alphabet also have dynamics, because they also have a functional meaning.

The runes of each column have another important property. They are grouped in columns into two triads that have complementary meanings. This symmetry is characterized by the mirroring of relations by numbers.

In other words, Futhark runes can be identified with archetypes, introduced for the first time by psychologist K. Jung, as part of the collective unconscious. For everyday perception, the concept of an archetype is identical to the concept of instinct in biology. Each rune is a convolution of an archetype that has its own inner meaning(homeland, mother, witch, etc.). But as soon as we activate this generalized image, it, unfolding in a multidimensional space, restores its structure (Hierarchy Theory, Gene Memory).
The runes perfectly reflect the structural and functional aspect of the archetypes. In a folded state, it is a structureless “particle” - a symbol. In the unfolded state, it is an image that has a multidimensional structure that fully corresponds to its original form.
The amazing symmetry of the runes is not the fruit of the fabrications of their interpreters. It has common roots with the law of the Cube. In favor of the "cubic" origin of the runes, the following figure can directly serve.

Information about the mystical meaning of the runes can be found in Julius Caesar and Tacitus. Caesar in the middle of the 1st century. The direction of writing is from left to right, but boustrophedon is found in early inscriptions. Words were separated by periods, colons, or crosses.
Various symbols are found on runic stones: swastika shapes, four-segment symbols, triquetras, triskelions, pentagrams, spirals. The symbols on bracteates were much more diverse: they also had ornaments of three or more dots, triangles, circles, T-shaped, S-shaped, I-shaped symbols, and zigzags.
Slavic runes and runic alphabet
Describing the temple of Retra, the German chronicler Titmar pointed to the strange inscriptions that were inscribed on the idols of this temple. He was familiar with many letters, so he could not help but recognize the existing runes, so it can be assumed that this one was unfamiliar new form writing.
Archaeological excavations and research have proven the existence of runic writing among the ancient Slavs. The most ancient finds are considered to be various fragments of ceramics, on which fragments of inscriptions can be found.
The discovered ceramics does not give a clear picture of the writing of the ancient Slavs. Excavations near the village of Voiskovoe made it possible to discover in 1967 a clay vessel, on the surface of which an inscription was found, out of 12 positions in which 6 signs were used. Despite existing rune knowledge and similarities to Scandinavian runes (Futhark runes), the records have not been deciphered.
The Baltic Slavs own numerous monuments where ancient writings were discovered. In 1771, Mikorzhinsky stones were discovered in Poland, which are more a prime example runic writing.
The Temple of Radegast, which is located in Rome, was destroyed back in the 9th century during the German conquest, but inscriptions have been preserved on the cult remains that confirm the existence of writing among the Baltic Slavs.
The existence of Old Slavic runic writing is closely connected with the Old Slavic culture. In the X-XVI centuries. in Rus' there were two faiths at the same time, it was in those days that the Slavs mastered the runic culture.
Slavic runic alphabet

At the beginning of your work with rune magic, you should write your name in this way. First, practice a few times on paper, and when you get it right, then write it down on a solid medium (for example, on wood, stone, etc.). You can also use one rune or sign, although they usually make up a more or less complex pattern. The talisman can be "general", that is suitable for different situations, and "address", that is, containing the name specific person or, for example, firms.
If the "task" entrusted to the talisman is multifaceted or simply confusing, several inscriptions or series of symbols can be performed. One of them (the most important) is placed on the front side of the talisman (obverse), and the other (others) on its reverse side(reverse).
In field conditions, a talisman can be made from what is at hand. You can even write with a pencil on a piece of paper. However, a real talisman must be made on a sufficiently durable carrier and consecrated with an appropriate ritual.
One of the advantages of a durable material carrier is that it has two sides, which means that a lot of information can be placed on it.
As a carrier material, it is recommended to use natural substances (“five media”): stone, wood, bone - we cut signs on them with any sharp tool. You can also cast them from metal or burn them out, or write with a thin felt-tip pen that does not wash off with water.
Runes can also be painted and even turned into an elegant "abstract" drawing by coloring different colors and surrounded by an arbitrarily chosen pattern or ornament.
Such a talisman, executed, say, on a page of Bristol paper, can be framed and hung anywhere in the house or any other room as decorative item thus avoiding unnecessary questions.

Although usually the signal that the talisman has completed its task is some kind of event associated with it, it either breaks, or cracks, or is lost. And then the issue of returning to its nature is resolved by itself. If the need for protection or its other functions has not yet ended, the talisman must be made again.
Before you start making a talisman, you, the reader, must accurately formulate your needs and wishes associated with it. First you need to accurately check the meaning of all the runes on the list given in this book in order to select the ones that you need.
If you want to make a “targeted” talisman, then you should, first of all, practice making a bindruna, or a witch's sign, since it will be necessary to indicate the name of the person for whom the talisman will be made.
Then you need to combine all the found formulas into one. It can be an inscription or a pattern.
As a rule, even an experienced runologist needs from three to five options or samples for this. When the necessary signs are found, the most important criterion the "final product" becomes its aesthetic appearance. The sign of the mascot should look beautiful, catch the eye, and all its constituent elements should be easily and harmoniously combined with each other.
After finding the most elegant and aesthetic form for a sign or magical inscription, it should be strengthened by writing on a piece of paper, and only after that you can start making the talisman itself.

After we have prepared the carrier (cleaned it with energy), we should put a drawing or an inscription on an object (a stone, a wooden tablet, and even on a piece of paper), which we place in the center of the magic tablecloth. We draw the necessary runes above it in the air, at the same time pronouncing the words of that request or spell, which the talisman should influence, what we address to it.
When all the rituals are over and the space is closed, we can assume that the talisman is ready and working.
